The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2014 - Day 1 - Arrow vs. Agents of SHIELD & One Tree Hill vs. Battlestar Galactica

6 Sept 2014

Hey all,

After a short nomination period that saw over 1300 submissions, we've narrowed it down to the top 64 shows as voted by you. 32 of these shows are current (have aired/will air episodes after June 1st 2014); the other 32 are finished shows (no new episodes after June 1st 2014). The draw has been made, and was done so with the following regulations:

1) The top 8 current shows were split up so that the earliest they could meet is the Quarter Finals.
2) The top 8 finished shows were split up so that the earliest they could meet is also the Quarter Finals.
3) The earliest one of the top 8 current shows can face one of the top 8 finished shows is Round Three.
3) The other 48 shows were randomly selected a position in the draw.

The draw can be seen below (Note: the top 8 current shows are bolded; the top 8 finished shows are in bolded italics.)

There are a lot of big contests here, including the very first poll of the competition, which I will come onto in a minute. One thing I will say is that if your show was dealt a tough draw in the first round, don't be disheartened. Strange things have happened before in competitions on this site, and the underdog does sometimes come out as winner. If that doesn't cheer you up, maybe this will: I have 14 shows in the competition, and I expect 10 of them to go out in the first round. Sucks for me.

Anyway, without further ado, let's begin the competition...

We do have some simple rules for those of you new to this competition (or that need a brief refresher):

1) Two shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round.
2) Vote for your favourite, spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
4) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

Our competition begins with a contest that is sure to have comic book fans very excited. DC's Arrow takes on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Arrow has a big fan following on the site, while Agents of SHIELD's fanbase seemed to grow after the release of Captain America 2, a movie which had a huge impact on the show's final few episodes. This is a seriously good poll to get us started.

Our second poll of the day features another of (The WB/) The CW's popular shows, with One Tree Hill. It faces Battlestar Galactica in its first battle.

  2. Let the games begin!

EDIT: I'm only seeing 1 poll? Should there be 2?

  3. That´s just cruel, putting TVD against Buffy, TVD is gonna get crushed :(

damn is arrow vs AOS........this is not fair

    ReplyDelete
  5. Like Agents of Shield but right now i Love Arrow so...

    ReplyDelete
  6. These choices were easy for me ! --> ARROW AND BATTLESTAR GALACTICA !

    ReplyDelete
  7. Arrow and Agents of Shield is a hard one; Arrow is better over all, but that last run of episodes for AoS was just so good.

Second is easy. I loved you back in the day, OTH, but Battlestar smashes you.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Voted for Agents of SHIELD and One Tree Hill.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I can see it now !

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hmm. That was bizarre. When I first loaded the page as soon as I posted, it was there. I came back to read your comment and it wasn't. I have it working now, glad you do too. That was a weird start.

  11. ha silly computers!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yep. Glad it worked out quickly too because it's gone midnight and I'm not sure I have the capacity to be dealing with technical issues without breaking something :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Best way to do something - not because you let the coin decide for you, but because you decide which you want it to come down on while it's in the air.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The first time I had both polls, I voted. And then I refreshed to check "view results" to see where it was at but The first poll arrow versus AoS has disappeared. So same problem now I can only see the second poll :/ Weird !

this competition could take a while to finish if it is 2 per day

    ReplyDelete
  16. Arrow and Battlestar Galactica

    ReplyDelete
  17. I can see both polls, on two different browsers. Are you still having this problem? Try refreshing the page.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Arrow and One Tree Hill.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I refreshed at least 10 times now it's working ! ;D as they say 10th time's the charm right !?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lol, something like that. Damn technical problems.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Let the games begin. Today I went with Arrow and BSG!

    ReplyDelete
  22. The second one is ridiculously easy since I consider BSG one of my favorite shows of all time, likely only second to Lost.

The first one is horrible though. I adore both shows to death and they are two of the shows whose returns I am anticipating the most. It was hard but I ended up voting for Arrow at the end, if only because it has had already more time to develop and prove itself. I adore Shield as well though!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Arrow, even though I really enjoy SHIELD too.
One Tree Hill, one of my all time favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Urgh, that was a hard one. It was so hard to choose between Arrow and Agents of SHIELD, because I'm such a big fan of both, but ultimately I had to go with Arrow. I fully admit that SHIELD's first season wasn't all that strong in the beginning, and Arrow has just been so strong from the get-go.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Damn. From the first round and it's already hard for me to choose. I went with Arrow, though i really wanted to vote for AoS too. Battlestar Galactica was an easy choice for me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. First one was hard but I went with Arrow because the first half of AoS S1 really was a bit rough. Alternately, BSG was probably one of the the easiest choices I will have during this competition!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agents of SHIELD. Arrow will do fine without my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You're probably right about that one.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I prefer DC over Marvel, couldn't care less about OTH and I intend to watch BSG at some point. Guess how I voted.

    ReplyDelete
  30. SHIELD and One Tree Hill? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Frak! Just BSG for me today! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Actually, I chose Agents of Arrow and One Tree Galactica.

Agents of SHIELD by default. I always feel a bit guilty
about voting for one show when I haven’t seen the other. I totally blame Person
of Interest for that; last year I voted for some other show in the episode
competition and then, few weeks later, I finally gave POI a go and realised
that, have I seen the episode before voting, I would have never voted against
    it. Aghh... XD

    ReplyDelete
  35. Arrow for now, but Agents of SHIELD has gotten better in the second half, maybe next year. And Battlestar Galactica, it was a great show.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Arrow vs. AoS? That's a tough start :( I guess I'll have to go with Arrow, I prefer DC to Marvel.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The first one, no contest - Arrow

The second one…as much as I'm a fan of One Tree Hill, I gotta go with Battlestar.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Arrow and OTH

    ReplyDelete
  39. Easy vote for me today! Arrow and Battlestar

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you Bradley. This is going to be so much fun!

So, Arrow for me and I'm so torn about OTH and BG. OTH holds an early years nostalgic factor for me and the character development of Brooke Davis is still some of the best I've seen. But BG. Mary McDonnell gave me this:

President Laura Roslin: No. Not now. Not ever. Do you hear me? I will use every cannon, every bomb, every bullet, every weapon I have down to my own eyeteeth to end you. I swear it! I'm coming for all of you!

Oh the pain of great television.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have no idea how The Tomorrow People made it but I'm so happy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Would've gone with BSG, but that ridiculously stupid ending prevented it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Arrow vs AoS??? I went with Arrow. Second one BSG for me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Uff having to choose between Arrow and AoS this early is tough. Considering I check for more spoilers on Arrow than AoS, my vote goes to Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Day 1 and already two shows I love pitted against each other. Was a really tough choice between arrow and shield as I adore both. However the last half of shield this season was simply phenomenal and I love those characters more than the ones on arrow so had to go with shield.
Don't watch either of the other shows so no vote there

    ReplyDelete
  46. The first poll really is hard.I haven't watched all the episodes from either show, but I enjoy both.I think I'm gonna go with Agents of SHIELD for the really impressive improvement after The Winter Soldier.

Battlestar Galactica for the second poll.I watched a few seasons of One Tree Hill a long time ago, when it used to air here and it was fun,but there's simply no contest for me.BSG is one of my favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh BSG and Laura Roslin!! I miss those. I remember her saying that so well! I miss that show!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Shield never appealed to me, don't know why? Maybe cause I'm not nto the Marvel movies. And Arrow is just awesome.
    Can't believe OTH is loosing!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Arrow and One Tree Hill

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow Arrow and AoS are neck to neck. Its a tough competition.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Don't watch Arrow so that one is easy for me and One Tree Hill was my guilty pleasure show while it was on I guess I'll vote for that.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My votes go to SHIELD and One Tree Hill.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I can't make the Google Sheet any wider, or else it'll go off the page. I've added a link to the full sheet.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Arrow was pitched as more grounded (in the sense of not being a comic book tv show - it had its own style and uses the comics as a basis rather than the full material). SHIELD (similarly to the upcoming The Flash) doesn't do that - it was far more comic booky.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Arrow and BG, although I love all of them, not good when a contest starts out this way. Not supposed to be hard until the end. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thank you. It sucks that only 2 of my shows that I submitted didn't make it though.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The not so great episodes of Arrow last season, were better than the not so great episodes of Agents of SHIELD. But the really good episodes of Agents of SHIELD, blew away the really good episodes of Arrow last season. So i went with SHIELD, hard choice. Battlestar Galactica is a no-brainer. It's my second favorite ended series.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Arrow and One Tree Hill

    ReplyDelete
  59. Arrow & OTH. Easy way to start off the competition, although they're both tight contests.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It depends on what fails6 September 2014 at 14:21

    BSG

    ReplyDelete
  61. Arrow and BG, no doubt in my mind today! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yeeeesss! :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Arrow and One Tree Hill

    ReplyDelete
  64. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. & Battlestar Galactica

I've never watched One Tree Hill and I stopped watching Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Only SHIELD today. Arrow was a disappointment this year and I haven't seen either show in the other poll.

    ReplyDelete
  66. So glad my top 4 all made it to the competition! Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who :)

Voting Arrow this round. LOVE that show!

Voted BSG over One Tree Hill because I would love to see it someday (been on my to-watch list for a long time now). One Tree Hill...ugh, I detest preppy airhead shows like that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love both (though the last season of TVD was weak) but gotta go with BTVS. Grew up watching that show. I do wish they hadn't been put against each other so early on.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Simple message from me, I'm not going to vote, mostly because I CANNOT choose between Arrow and AoS, considering I LOVE both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Love Arrow! Arrow has the best fast paced action scenes/stunts, best villains and Olicity (best chemistry/romance)! Plus Arrow has great dialogue/banter.

AoS was disappointing (I stopped watching after a few episodes) until after Winter Soldier. Hydra made it better but then they killed off their best villain in the finale! Ugh! And I was just starting to like skyeward too...

and of course voted for BSG!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I LOVE that Arrow and Agents of SHIELD are so close to each other! Especcially for SHIELD, for I know how much Arrow has such a big fanbase! Truly, I believe this is good news for both shows. Don't care which one wins (althought I prefer Agents of SHIELD), I'm pretty sure there's room for both shows in the world!

You can only like Arrow, or only like Agents of SHIELD, or like both (or, heck, dislike both! lol). But I believe we should respect the strenghts of both from this point on. Just because of how close they both are in this poll; showing that they fight on equal grounds and all.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If we were in the first half of last season, I'd have voted for Arrow in a heartbeat. It improved tremendously compared to S1, whereas AoS had a rough start with boring Scooby Doo-ish missions-of-the-week and weak characters. Going into the second half of the season, however, the scales tipped completely in the other direction. Arrow became a mess with far too many characters and storylines going on at once, too many ridiculous plot points and the main hero once again becoming a jackass, while AoS found its footing with the various mysteries and plot threads being tied together into a compelling plot and the team/characters becoming much more likable. I honestly think people are selling the show short, saying it only improved with the CA: TWS crossover (episode 17). The season was already stepping up its game around episode 10/11 and it just kept getting better afterwards. One of the best episodes yet, T.R.A.C.K.S., was pre-crossover.

So anyway: AoS got my vote based on where the shows were at season's end. However, it has to prove it can keep the mometum going in S2, whereas Arrow S3 seems promising and like they'll do a better job giving each main character a decent arc, so we'll see. I have to admit, I thought Arrow would win easily - I'm pleasantly surprised that this is such a nail-biter.

For the other one, I haven't watched BSG and only saw a handful of OTH episodes, but given all the praise BSG gets, I have to pick it over a teen drama.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The irony is that the AoS naysayers everywhere keep going on about the lack of superheroes and supervillains compared to Arrow - a complaint I've never understood, when the very title of the show should be enough to tell you it's not superhero-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I hope Arrows wins this round. The first 11 episodes of AoS were absolutely terrible, and it only found its pace and became enjoyable from episode 12 and onwards, whereas Arrow got to be enjoyable from the start and only became better as the show progressed

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think we have to realize, too, that many of the Scooby Doo-ish of the first few episodes found some at least some kind of relevance in the second half of the show, too. The Pilot introduced us to Mike Peterson, who'd later become Deathlok and play a major role in the serie. ''The Asset'' introduced us to Ian Quinn, who we discover later is working for the Clairvoyant. ''Eye Spy'' introduced us to the concept of the mechanical eye camera/bomb, that the Clairvoyant later uses to control his supersoldiers. etc. Just saying: Every show often starts with cases-of-the-week as to introduce the viewers smoothly into it. Even Arrow was mostly about striking a bunch of people off this ''list'' of his. I believe Agents of SHIELD did their cases of the week very well: FZZT, despite being only the 6th episode of the season, a case-of-the-week, and bringing nothing to the overall plot point like the ones I mentionned above, remain one of my favorite episode of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't know if it's gonna get ''crushed''. Yes, Buffy is better of course! lol But it's a relatively old show, the newer generation of viewers don't know about it. TVD is fresher in the viewer's mind. Also, Buffy fans may not very well follow polls anymore, going around praising the show and all.

What I mean is, Buffy starts with an handicap over TVD because of how long it's been since it's off the air. But it is better, true. So it might be a hard battle.

    ReplyDelete
  76. God I hope Arrow wins!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. That's true as well. In retrospect, the early episodes did drop some nice breadcrumbs for later down the line. I'm rewatching S1 now and picking up on them. I also realize they had to spend some time on the characters in those early episodes.

Arrow was really nothing more than an ok show for me in its first season, really. The first half of S2 was WAY better but the second half not as good. We'll see what S3 is like.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Good luck Bradley! Sad to be missing out on the fun this year! You'll knock it out the park I'm sure!

My votes would be for Shield and Battlestar...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hear, hear! They are different types of shows and each one should be judged on its own merits, rather than against the other. These DC vs. Marvel wars are tiresome. We should simply rejoice in the fact that it's such a great time to be a comic book fan! (Or a fan of shows and movies based on comics, in my case)

    ReplyDelete
  80. I want to go slightly off-topic, but only slightly, because it's still about superhero movies, and we're having this intense poll about the two current superhero shows already!

So, yeah, you guys think it's about time we have a Black Widow movie? Seems like everyone is talking about it happening, most people want a Black Widow movie, but we NEVER get news of it! At best we get some teaser that ''yeah, maybe we'll do a Black Widow movie''.

Stop with the teasing, give us the Black Widow movie already! :p

Rant off! Again, have fun with the polls, both to Arrow and Agents of SHIELD fans! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  81. My vote go for Arrow and BSG.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow. AoS fans came out to win. Everything I read about this show says I walked away from it too soon. I may have to give it another try.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Cheers mate. Fancy letting real life stop you from running this competition!

Just pass it off as an experimental year - you're experimenting to see what it's like to be a fan of this comp rather than the person who runs it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Starting out slow and improving as the season goes is common for new shows, but AoS is a drastic case. I too was ready to walk away from it 3 or 4 episodes in, but I'm so glad I didn't. The payoff in the second half of the season is brilliant. Also, if you watch the Marvel films, it's incredibly cool to see how Captain America: The Winter Soldier ties into episodes 16-17 of the season. The events in that movie change the landscape of the series completely and set up an awesome final stretch of episodes. I hope Season 2 continues in the same vein.

    ReplyDelete
  85. My vote went to Arrow and Battlestar Galactica!! Good luck to all the Fandoms, this is going to be a fun competition!!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Wow I really can't believe Shield is winning.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Really glad Agents of SHIELD won! A little surprised, seeing as how big and loyal the Arrow fanbase is, but to me it just means that Agents of SHIELD can stand its own against it! And, like I said before, both show can coexist in this world anyway! You can be fan of both shows, or only one of them, or even none, but both shows are really good in the end! :)

Congratulations to Agents of SHIELD! I have a feeling it's gonna beat Battlestar Galactica, too, when the time comes! It might go relatively far in this contest, but I doubt it'll win against the big names that are already a few seasons ahead. Oh well, we'll see! :) Maybe if we get the Arrow fan on our side? It's still a superhero show, guys! ;) lol

    ReplyDelete
  88. Agents of SHIELD won? Already this contest is even more interesting than I hoped. If Arrow can be knocked out in the first round, who knows what other giants will fall quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  89. It has its issues but the story has gotten more focused and the characters more interesting. It's never going to be my favorite show but it was a decent addition to my fall viewing, so much so that I never missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Darn, too late. First match I was happy with either, 2nd one great to see BSG advance.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I definitely expected Arrow to take this one home given its popularity around here. Every Arrow article gets tons of comments. Looks like AoS has quietly been cultivating a sizable online fandom. I'm happy about that given how much the show has improved and hope it keeps that up this season.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I am sad Arrow didn't win because I am more attached to Arrow's characters than AoS's characters. But I can understand why Arrow didn't win. Compared to the strongest episodes AoS had in the latter half of season 2 Arrow's best episodes fall short. AoS is the most improved show with great character development for the ensemble cast. This contest just became very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I hear ya. It was a tough choice, since both shows went through ups and downs last year. I based my vote for AoS on where they were at the end of the year. Arrow S3 is very promising and might be the best yet, and I hope AoS keeps on the same trajectory from the last third of S1.

    ReplyDelete
  94. AoS latter half was really good but I liked Arrow finale better that's why my vote went for Arrow. I was disappointed by the way the death of Garrett was made into a comedy and the confrontation between Nick Fury and Coulson was meh for me. I was expecting fireworks between them. Then again Arrow had the weird send off of Sara.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I loved Garrett's death scene but I guess it comes down to taste. Some feel that a Big Bad going down has to be treated seriously or it makes a mockery of the whole arc. I personally adored the send-up of A) the good guys leaving and not bothering to make sure the bad guy is dead and B) the bad guy doing an uninterrupted evil monologue for half an hour. It was had a great Whedon-ish flavor. But yeah, different strokes for different folks.

About Coulson and Fury, I agree. I loved the part where Fury says that Coulson is an Avenger and appoints him SHIELD director... but before that, everything became water under the bridge too quickly. Considering how much of the season was spent on Coulson trying to figure out what happened to him and then being horrified by the answer, it makes no sense that Fury would placate him so easily. Coulson should've really ripped him a new one. Even the doctor who operated on Coulson admitted that what had been done to him was wrong, but in the finale it was treated like Fury was awesome for doing it with May and eventually Coulson being on board.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I would have cheered for the Garrett 's death scene had they treated Nick Fury and Coulson's confrontation a little bit more serious. I was looking forward to that the most. The intensity and importance that they gave with the whole TAHITI project just went poof by the easy acceptance of Coulson. So in comparison I liked Arrow's finale more. But boy did they have a disjointed and dragging second half.

I am not still attached to any SHIELD character yet where as I am too much attached to all the Arrow characters. I hope it changes in season 2.
