How To Get Away With Murder - Pilot - Review: "Stunning"

26 Sept 2014

At SpoilerTV, we see a lot of series pilots from many networks. There's often some great discussion between the team that you readers never see surrounding those pilots.

SpoilerTV's Babar Suhail was the only team member to get an early look at the pilot for How To Get Away With Murder. Cue the jealousy from myself and others, who, like almost everyone else, saw the pilot for the first time last night on ABC.

But boy, was the wait worth it or what? Last night's stunning premiere episode ranks among the top series premieres I've ever seen, and that seems to be the consensus among you readers who shared their thoughts on the episode's opinion poll.

Right from the start, ABC leveraged the reputation of Academy Award nominee Viola Davis in selling the series to audiences. ABC even altered their flagship Thursday night lineup to give How To Get Away With Murder the best possible start. But, as many other series have proven in the past, all the promotion and scheduling in the world will not retain and add viewers unless the series itself is up to scratch.

I think it's safe to say that the initial signs are very much in the green. The pilot had everything and more I require to hook me, line and sinker included. The casting was excellent, as was the writing, directing, acting and storyline. We got a surprisingly revealing glimpse into the characters and the backstory - something you rarely see until the first few episodes, or, in many cases, not until a season finale.

But things get even better. It's becoming increasingly prevalent in the serialized drama genre to integrate a deep backstory and/or timeshifing into a storyline. How To Get Away With Murder absolutely nailed both aspects. The flash forwards and flashbacks were executed with a degree of precision I haven't seen before. Moreover, revealing so much so early using timeshifing leaves the viewer with a plentiful supply of intriguing unanswered questions to carry them over the following 167 hours. At least, that's what it's like in my case.

Back to the cast and characters. Viola Davis leads the series playing Annalise Keating. Her performance in the pilot has cemented her among television's best female actors, but on top of that is her sheer presence on screen. The only other actor that meets that level of presence on screen is The Blacklist's James Spader. Davis did a stellar job portraying the emotions and vulnerabilities required of the character, but called on a completely different skill set in the classroom and courtroom scenes.

There is plenty of youth among the other lead roles. Alfred Enoch leads the students as Wes Gibbins in a very promising performance. The fellow student cast members, Karla Souza, Matt McGorry, and Aja Naomi King also bought their A game, and combined with Enoch, are a young cast who work really well together. Given last night's episode was just a series premiere, you'd be silly not to expect this group to improve further. The characters are very different, but share the resolve to do what's needed alongside some sort of moral compass. That's an enticing pair of traits.

As much as I'd love to, speculating on the direction of the storyline is very difficult. We do have two dead bodies, we know who they are, where they were hidden, and we know who disposed of one of them. I don't know about you, but that's plenty to ponder for now!

But one thing is for certain. A pilot of this caliber cannot be ignored. How To Get Away With Murder has lived up to the hype ABC gave it, and all the signs look very promising. Sit down, buckle up, and hold on tight!

  5. It was amazing. I love the fact that they revealed the body in the rug by the first episode. Will be tuning in for more and can not wait to see where it goes.

  6. Yea that was a ballsy move by the showrunners. I guess the way they've structured it is that we have a "conclusion" so now we have to get there. I'm already thinking about what happens after we reach the time 3 months into the future. Do we get another 3 month jump?

  7. So far this was my favorite pilot this season. It was high paced, great plotline and some very interesting characters. I was happy that we soor who was under the rug in the first episode. I wonder if he killed Lila (wasn´t that the name of the girl on the news?)

  8. Thanks for the review. It doesn't happen very often, but the moment I finished watching this pilot, I suddenly wanted to watch it again.

I'm normally not a huge fan of small flashbacks to remind the viewer of something that happend during the episode, but they worked in this particular case - for istance when the detective was called to the stand I didn't recognise him as the guy having an affair with Annalise, maybe if he was walking in shirtless I would have ;)
And I think these small "flashes" will be very useful in future episodes, when storylines get more complicated.

Writing and acting were top notch. Viola Davis was amazing. In your review you forgot Jack Falahee (Connor) who did a fantastic job, especially in the scene in the car outside of the store.

  9. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing!
    I LOVE this show already.

  10. I got that feeling too. This pilot was one of the ones where I missed a lot more than I initially thought after I watched it the second time. I agree, the mini flashbacks worked really well. I haven't seen it before but the creative team nailed it every time they were used. I go on faces, not names when watching a series so seeing the faces in those flashbacks made things so much easier to follow.

Agreed on Jack Falahee, I didn't mention him because he didn't seem to be a character on the same level as the other four so I'm not sure how much we will see of him. He played his part very well though

  13. I plan to check it out when it premieres , it sounds like something I would watch. If you think the Odyssey pilot is better than this pilot It makes me even more excited to see it!

  19. Great review Jimmy! This was absolutely an outstanding pilot, I think the best one of the fall. Can't wait to see what happens next and uncover who was behind both murders.

  20. AWE-SOME!
At first I thought "Yeah, catchy, I'll watch it when I have time on weekends" then when I saw the end, thinking that it would be the body of the girl who was found in the water tank earlier and then seeing that it was Annnalise's husband............ oh shit I need to watch it the second it's downloadable in my country.

  21. So, I watched it again and noticed a few details I missed the first time. Most importantly... What's the deal with Wesley's room's previous owner? I need to know more...

Regarding Connor, the show's creator mentioned that he'll get more screentime and his own love interest starting next week so I think we'll see a lot more of him. Jack Falahee stole every scene on Twisted, I'm expecting great things from him in this ;)

  22. Shonda Rhimes definitely has another hit on her hands. I think HTGAWM surpassed everyone's expectation. I, for one, knew it was going to be good but I didn't know it was going to be an outstanding premiere. Viola Davis!!! Viola Davis!!! I can't say anything other than PERFECTION. Everything she put into this character is on point. She killed it. The entire cast was amazing and I can't wait to see the progression of this story.

  23. Who was the girl on the water tank? I thought the missing girl was going to be Wes neighbor. And, does anyone else think the husband was going out with the girl on the tank? Viola said "I'm sure it was the boyfriend" (or something like that), and then gave a weird look to the camera.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Amazing review, I agree this show is great, can't wait to see the all season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was a little skeptical but all of that went way as soon i started watching it.The narrative & the editing is just outstanding. On top of that, viola davis nailed this role!As a viewer who couldn't continue watching coz of all the over-the-top melodrama, this show is the perfect fit me! Definitely tuning in next week!

  26. Thanks a lot, I'll be reviewing the series each week here on SpoilerTV, looking forward to seeing you back here!

  27. On the room, I did notice, and I'm wondering whether it's the crime scene where that girl could have been killed. Rebecca, Wes's neighbor said the previous students had moved out so wouldn't surprise me if the murder and that room were tied together somehow

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks for that! Glad you liked the review :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I made the connection between the girl in the water tank, and Wes's room, but I didn't make the connection between Annalise's husband and the girl. Nothing's concrete but that would be an awesome twist!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cheers Daniel, agree on all counts!

    ReplyDelete
  31. So you think the girl in the tank isn't the missing girl, who is actually alive living next to Wes? That's what I'm thinking. But if she's hiding why would she go out so much and show her face to Wes when there are posters all over the University...

    ReplyDelete
  32. No, Rebecca the neighbor was there the whole time. But she would have also been neighbors to the girl who was killed, who lived in, and was possibly murdered in, the apartment Wes now lives in, and was found in the tank. So she's not hiding either

    ReplyDelete
  33. OHHH. It all makes so much sence now lol. Thanks for explaining it me! It's just that for some reason she looked like the girl from the pictures to me. So if Viola's husband was her "boyfriend", he probably killed her and those marks Wes found in the walls and bed where made by her while she was with him (I'm theorizing! Maybe when he was trying to kill her or simple they where having some wild sex lol). The only problem with that is that in the promo we saw Viola asking her husband if he dated the girl, and that secret of "who killed ..." can't be revealed so early on.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good question. Well cause its like a 15ep season I'm guessing around the finale is when the murder occurs making it end resolved maybe. Then maybe ends with a glimpse of the next seasons murder or whatever they chose to do
