Couch Detective - ABC Gives Put Pilot Commitment

9 Sept 2014

A project, which represents a departure for both Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, has landed at ABC with a put pilot commitment. Couch Detective, from Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV, is described as an irreverent hour-long comedic mystery.

In the tradition of great mysteries dramas about amateur sleuths such as Murder, She Wrote, Couch Detective follows the exploits of a thirty-something female “couch detective” who solves crimes based on her encyclopedic knowledge of every true-crime TV special, police procedural and made-for-TV movie.

Iungerich will write the script and will executive produce with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman, while KristieAnne Reed co-executive produces.

  1. Anyone else thinking this is Castle's replacement?

  2. They keep trying don't they?! XD

I wondered if Forever may be Castle's replacement as I watched the pilot. A lot of different elements than Castle, but something about the tone of it made me think of Castle.

  3. Forever seemed a little like Sherlock to me.

  4. Why not. Awkward is actually funny (especially the earliest seasons!)

  5. I can see that too.
All those gimmicky eccentric "non-police" feel the same to me for the most part.

I think I thought of Castle first since in Forever we have a female detective and a male non-cop eccentric that solves all the cases, Oh and they are setting up the romantic chemistry between the two leads as well.

  7. Agreed.
I went in expecting to watch the pilot and dismiss the series, but the pilot made me want to watch at least a few more episodes.

What's wrong with your titles ABC?

  9. I've always enjoyed ABC's weird titles for shows. Maybe a turnoff for some people but even if I didn't keep up with TV news and saw the name "Don't Trust the B in Apt 23", "Selfie" "Happy Endings", "Fresh off the Boat", hell even "Cougar Town" I'm probably about 200% more likely going to see what it is and give it a chance.
