Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 - Press Release + Nick Blood promoted to Regular

4 Sept 2014

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns for a dynamic, action-packed second season, with newly appointed Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) - now the keeper of the secrets -- charged with rebuilding and restoring government and public trust in S.H.I.E.L.D. in the wake of the events of "Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier," where it was revealed evil Hydra agents had infiltrated the organization.

Ever since the existence of super heroes and aliens became public knowledge after the Battle of New York, the world has been trying to come to grips with this new reality. Agent Phil Coulson, who had died at the hands of Loki during the battle, was resuscitated and brought back into action, assembling a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division). S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mission: to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive.

But the biggest threat was growing from within, as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s old enemy, Hydra - a dangerous extremist group Captain America fought against in World War II - had secretly infiltrated and infected the organization at the highest levels. Once revealed to the public, S.H.I.E.L.D., including Coulson and his team, was discredited and made to look like the enemy. The world now views S.H.I.E.L.D. as untrustworthy, and it's Coulson's job to change that opinion.

After helping to thwart Hydra, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. This won't be an easy job to accomplish with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents either killed, secretly working for Hydra or free agents. Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of the mysterious etchings he's been carving into walls. What do these etchings mean, and can Coulson be trusted? Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. and locked up away from the world and his former teammates. But this isn't the last we've seen of him... After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by Ward, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist, found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions; a devastating blow to Simmons. And computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as a 0-8-4 -- an object of unknown origin - and that her parents were considered "monsters." Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her? Also joining Coulson's core team is Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit. Since he didn't rise up through the ranks, does he have an ulterior motive for helping out the team?

Who can Coulson trust?

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, and is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound.

  1. Wait, is Nick Blood a regular now? I thought he was just recurring. He seems to get along pretty well with the cast, though, so that's great.

Still need BJ to be a regular but he has his other show (which is on Netflix and only has eight episodes so I need to watch).

Poor Fitz. God, we're actually getting concrete stuff now!

  2. Seems like he is, wish it was BJ but at least he has been seen on set and backstage a lot so far.

  3. all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions

Oh no Fitz! That is like the worse thing that can happen to a 'genius', this is the man whose device helped save Fury, Captain America, Black Widow and Falcon, to see him like this is going to be heartbreaking.

  4. Exactly! They at least could have mentioned Trip since he's part of the team. And I need my OT7 back.

  5. Finally, we are getting more and more stuff to hype us up for S2, which sounds like it's going to be all sorts of awesome. Is it September 23 yet???

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh no, Fitz.

Making Nick Blood regular seems pretty random.

  7. Wish we had BJ as a regular! I'm betting that Fitz won't be impaired for long - what with an 0-8-4 and Simmons on the case - not to mention all the Alien technology (AND ETCHINGS!!!!) available to the team....

  8. If its the Mary Jane show his role isnt that big anyway at leasty since the last time l watched the show could get by without him. He plays the main characters brother and the show has alot going on.
He should totally go AOS, do you guys know he is going to be in the Age of Ultron movie.

  9. This sounds so awesome. I am hyped! Great job ABC doing this one! Please come already!

  10. Maybe Trip gets killed off. Who knows.

  11. He's not in Avenger 2. Neither is any of the other AoS cast, save Coulson, I think.

  12. Looking forward to the start of Season 2. Wish it would start right now...I'm getting really excited :)

  13. I don't think I've been this excited for a new season of a show since LOST's final season a couple years back. It's insane how much I am obsessed with this show. September 23rd can't come fast enough!

  14. I think Fitz will conveniently wake up just in time for the season premiere. From the sound of it in the producers' comments, S2 picks up a few months later, with about the same passage of time since the end of S1 as in real life.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I doubt it. I think he will remain in coma for a few episodes and will see Simmons tying to get him to wake up.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I hope we get new cast photos soon, BTW.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, I would also love to see some cast photos soon :)

  18. The thing is, I'm pretty sure we see a new clip of Fitz with Simmons at 0:13 in the promo, since it's in between clips that are definitely new. I don't know how long they've been filming, but that clip has to be from a pretty early episode if it's already in a promo.

  19. yay! Can't wait.

  20. Actual press releases now with concrete facts!! So happy now.

  21. I have good faith though that Iain can pull this storyline off really well with his acting. Its a sad situation but I want to see him overcome it and I'm so glad they aren't just sweeping this under the rug like some shows do and then never mention the injuries ever again. I'm glad they are actually going to address this on the show and have it play out hopefully in a well done manner. But still poor Fitz :( To have a brain injury that affects your cognitive and likely physical function to especially when your that smart. Sad.

I read some really interesting theories from tumblr and a few other sites based on the short promo released that think the reason he is not wearing a tie in the promo (and he pretty much always wore one) is because the damage might make it hard for him to use his hands. Again just speculation from some many fans who analysed the promo to death but I suspect in this case they may be on to something with that theory. Its not uncommon for brain injuries like that to cause ones hands to shake and hard to control sometimes. Poor Fitz.

  22. I agree I think the episode may end on a note of a phone call or someone in person seeing him wake up. Or some hints of him coming back home to the base by the end of the episode or the next episode.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree, I would love to see a disability storyline played realistically. It could be heartbreaking but powerful TV. I appreciate it when shows depict the consequences of being part of a war rather than always having everyone be okay in the end of the day. Even when someone gets shot or stabbed, they're usually in a hospital bed for an episode or two and then everything is dandy. Having long-term consequences for what happened to Fitz in the form of brain damage would be a lot more interesting. (Of course, I'd like him to recover eventually, but it's the journey towards that point that is compelling.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sounds awasome! Anyone know when S1 will be up on Netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  25. For someone like Fitz, who's self-worth seemed to be almost completely tied to his intellect, this is about the worst thing that could happen to him. This could be a pretty heartbreaking storyline. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a suicidal Fitz in season 2 as he tries to work through this.

I'm sure there will be a way to fix him though. We've already had a dead Coulson come back to life and Skye recover from 2 bullet wounds in the stomach after 3 episodes. Once you've done that, how hard can a little brain damage be to fix? This is Marvel; there are ways. I imagine Fitz will be okay eventually, but he'll have to go through some difficult stuff first.

  26. Some people are speculating that that clip could be some kind of dream sequence or hallucination, noting that Simmons is dressed just like she was in FZZT and also has her hair done the same way even though Elizabeth's hair is supposedly shorter now. Could be people just over-analyzing this way too much, but it's not inconceivable.

  27. Iain was so good in the Fades and showed how great he could be as Fitz in the season finale so yes it could be a really interesting storyline for him. Even its heartbreaking!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree. I was totally thinking of The Fades to when I wrote the original response on here. If he can pull of coming back from the dead on that and seeing dead people cannibal creatures he can pull off recovering from a brain injury. Especially when said brain injury happens to someone who defines themselves and their job by their genius status. It's not like some Joe Schmo who's got athletics and other many skills on his side as part of their job/life skills. Fitz's whole life up till now has pretty much been that he is super smart and very handy with technology and science.

Yeah as really did not like May at first as thought she was so cold as a fish. But now getting to warm up to her a bit. As really despite all she has been through, really no excuse for the way at times, she treated her "friend" in particular Skye!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree. May is kick ass and usually pretty awesome at her job but it did take quite a long time into the first season to come to sort of like her as a person outside of her job. She does have a very serious, matter of fact approach to how she deals with people including her own team/friends. That's why it so weird at times when I see pictures the actress posts on her instagram and twitter behind the scenes because she is soo smiley and happy in real life. She's always doing fun poses and looks relaxed in the behind the scenes shots. So it's funny to see her on screen as May being all dead serious down to business.

  31. If they go with what people are saying Peggy Carter would be his grandma and shes most likely in it , if his mixed mom married a black guy easy explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Coulson isnt in the movie definitely the avengers think hes dead and lm sure its going to stay that way for a while , BJ's name was on the cast list on the marvel cinematic universe wikia - source might not be reliable but thats were l saw it on the Age of Ultron page in cast and also on his character page.

  33. god no leo fitz will be back to his old self before we know it he has to be and i don't think he could ever hate jemma, i really hope grant offers help to coulson and the team and nick blood a regular really why

    ReplyDelete
  34. granted shes mixed.
We really dont have anything official on Trip.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting news, but why this Blood is made regular? I mean what about Triplet?
    O and thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If there's one thing Fitz might be able to take comfort in it's that he probably doesn't have to worry about Trip as a romantic rival now. After his confession to her in the pod and given his current condition, Simmons hooking up with Trip (at least any time in the near future) would be just about the biggest dick move in the history of dick moves.

  37. BJ Britt and his character suck horribly. What they 'need' is to never appear again.

    ReplyDelete
  38. God, that would be awful. That sounds like the kind of PC appeasement crap the comics division would pull, not like something Feige would allow in his universe. Peggy Carter is already carrying the feminist flag, must she carry every single PC flag there is? Hey, maybe her kid with the black guy can be gay, and she can be really supportive of him!

Her character is already highly socially implausible just by being a young female high-ranking secret agent in the 40/50s. Having her marry a black guy would jut pile on the history-ignoring absurdity.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Where did this idea of Peggy being Trip's grandmother come from?

    ReplyDelete
  40. B.J. Britt who plays Trip is still around (the cast has posted several behind-the-scenes pictures with him lately), but he's on another show simultaneously, which I guess is why he couldn't be promoted to series regular. Lance Hunter, the character played by Nick Blood, sounds like an "action guy" as well so maybe they added him to give the team some muscle besides May, since Ward is out and Trip can't be around full-time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hope they forget about this whole Trip/Simmons nonsense, it never made sense to me to begin with, and some love triangle BS is the last thing we need in a season that promises to be full of awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you. I thought I was the only one who was turned off by the Trip/Simmons thing. It's bad enough that they start teasing this flirtation while Skye is 5 feet away and minutes from death (inappropriate much?), but the whole thing always felt weird and forced to me. Of course, I'm in the minority in that Trip as a character in general kind of bugs me. It's nothing to do with BJ Brit really, but it just got under my skin how they seemed to be writing him like he's the ultimate perfect guy or something. That works in the short term if the purpose is to have him interest Simmons and make Fitz jealous, but I kept looking for a character flaw or two to round the guy out a bit, and the writers didn't seem to give him any.

Put me down for not making this a love triangle too. They're overdone IMO. Adding some character tension is fine, but I really hope they don't spend a lot of time having Fitz suffer in silence while Simmons makes googly eyes at Trip's muscles. No, thank you. I mean, if we're going that route, at least give Fitz a love interest too. He's pretty much the only character who hasn't had one yet. That hardly seems fair.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Frankly, I always thought that Trip/Simmons scene would make more sense if it was setting up a Skye/Simmons romance, instead. I mean, what did they actually say? That Simmons can't imagine her life without Skye. Hello?
