Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 - Henry Simmons interview

22 Sept 2014

Marvel.com: We haven’t really learned much about Mack aside from the fact that he’s a mechanic and he’s joined up with S.H.I.E.L.D. at this point. I was curious if you could give us a little info on the character and what drew you to him?

Henry Simmons
: I can just say the character is described as a big guy. That is, he has a big heart, but when it comes down to it and business has to get done, there’s another side of him that gets it done. That kind of guy.

Marvel.com: One other thing I was wondering about--since you are the mechanic on the show, does Coulson let you touch Lola?

Henry Simmons:
[laughs] Oh boy, I think there’s the beginning of a running gag about that. I’m serious. I’m glad you asked, I think just the other day we filmed something where I mentioned to him about my mechanic skills and he was just like, “Not going to happen.” [laughs] I didn’t even say anything about it, he just shot me down.

  1. I love how much taller he is than Jemma. It's the best. And LOL, I would love if it becomes a thing that he can't touch Lola.

  2. I really love the idea of seeing SHIELD people other than scientists, techies and field Agents. Look forward to meeting the Big Guy Mac.

  3. I'm looking forward to him. In the few pictures of him with Jemma from the episode promo pictures he seemed nice and confident. Plus good looking too ;) Nice to see some more technical characters who aren't necessarily agents out in the field doing the ass kicking but doing the behind the scene's work. Although it makes me sad the might be doing of Fitz's work because Fitz is not up to full capacity and might not be for a while. :(

  4. They are literally doing interviews with everyone and their mother now, aren't they?

Poor guy, not being allowed to touch Lola.

  5. Everyone except Iain apparently.

  6. There better be some serious payoff for all of this secrecy surrounding Fitzy, yeah. Maybe they'll make it up to us with an Iain interview after the season premiere has aired, and the cat (whatever it happens to be) is out of the bag.

  7. They'd better. At this point, nothing short of a mind-blowing reveal is going to account for all the infuriating secrecy surrounding Fitz's condition. If this isn't a huge plot point in season 2, I'm going to be mighty pissed.

Personally, I think there may be something to the Fitz-is-hallucinating theory -- that his damaged brain conjures up a mental avatar of Simmons as some kind of twisted coping mechanism. Visual clues in the photos released do seem to hint at that. But whatever it ends up being, there better be some kind of huge twist or it's just going to feel like they were yanking our chains all summer.

  8. "Read on to hear more about the latest agent, from where he fits into the team to his bond with Fitz and more"

Am I completely missing something obvious, or does the actual interview not talk about that anywhere?

  9. Could the obvious thing you're missing be that Marvel is apparently allergic to information that might reveal anything that might have to do with Fitz for some reason? Yeah, I got nothing.

  10. Okay, glad I'm not just overlooking it somehow. I was excited when I read that intro paragraph because I'm curious how the new people will interact with the established characters, but then it was never actually mentioned in the interview.

I wonder if the interview originally had comments on that but they cut them out per whatever unspoken agreement they seem to have to avoid specifics on Fitz wherever possible, and the person who wrote the intro forgot to update it to reflect that change.

  11. Good grief... They've locked up nearly all Fitz-related info tighter than Fort Knox. The reveal of his condition better be something really special if it's going to justify all this hush hush business.

  12. Yeah, the thing that makes me suspicious is what you pointed out a while back about how Simmons has her hair in a ponytail in that scene with Fitz, even though it's shorter this season. Although maybe not too short to tie it back. Point is, she looks more like she did last season which could give credence to the theory that he's hallucinating or imagining that scene. However, Mack is also there and Fitz doesn't know him unless he woke up from his coma, so... go figure.
I just need to see the damn episode already. Just one more day to hang in there!!!

  13. I guess only people with Level 10 clearance are allowed to know anything about Fitz's current condition, or overall role in this season.

  14. More than that, she's dressed exactly like she was in FZZT, which was a day that holds special significance for Fitz for obvious reasons. If he's interacting with Mack, I think he most likely woke up from his coma before the new season started, but I'm wondering if he could be doing a thing not unlike how Dexter Morgan would talk to an imaginary avatar of his dad.
