Witches of East End - Art of Darkness - Review

27 Aug 2014

This week's Witches of East End was another potent witch's brew of romance, adventure, mystery, suspense, and big trouble.  Killian finally started to catch on to Eva's true nature, while Dash continued to show his charm and villainy, and Frederick showed his hand as we learned more about his orders from Asgard.  Meanwhile, Freya fumed over the increasing closeness between Ingrid and Dash, and Wendy encountered a surprise face from her past.

Eva's tricky sorcery has had Killian in a frustrating haze for the last bunch of episodes, but it began to dawn upon him that something was wrong when he saw his wife momentarily transform into an old woman while they were in bed.  Eep!  Killian soon discovered an ominous "Don't trust Eva" message on the bathroom mirror, followed by a video message from himself, warning him that Eva was up to no good, controlling him and making him forget that...he loves Freya!  Even though we knew all of this was true, boy, was it nice to have it confirmed.  Now, once Eva left the house, my first instinct would have been to run far, far away from home.  I know she could have easily tracked Killian down, but at least that would have earned him a respite to plan retaliation and seek help.  But no, Killian opted to spend the time sifting through Eva's things until she inevitably returned home and respelled him.  Ugh!  Still, we had some progress in this plotline, and answers are satisfying.  I'm looking forward to learning the details of Eva's scheme.
Elsewhere, Joanna walked in on Frederick while he was having a seizure...right in the middle of a steamy encounter with his Sudden!Girlfriend Caroline, who was topless and later felt embarrassed, though true-to-form Joanna was not bothered by the embarrassing situation.  So, as Joanna confronted Wendy about how the latter knew all about Freddie's seizures, it turned out that Wendy knew all kinds of other facts about his recent activities, too.  Like how Frederick met Caroline because she's teaching a course he's auditing.  I guess this answers the questions some of us have had about whether Frederick has a life of his own outside being torn between his grandfather and the rest of his family.  Poor Joanna felt like nobody ever tells her anything, which is ironic, as Wendy pointed out, given that Joanna is quite the secretive one herself by nature.

During a dinner with Joanna, Freddie, and Caroline, an old "friend" from Asgard showed up at the door. Joanna knows Tarkoff (James Marsters!) as a dear pal from back in the day who helped her and Victor acclimate to life away from Asgard.  Unfortunately, Frederick ran into Tarkoff earlier and knows all too well that his true intention is to weaken Joanna so that Grandfather will have an easier time "dealing" with her (ruh-roh).  Freddie had been ordered to dose Joanna with a potion ASAP.  Because, as we now know, Frederick houses his grandfather's spirit and has been sent to find an earthly host for it.

One pleasant aspect of this otherwise excessively awkward and deceitful gathering was hearing Victor's name come up and seeing some evidence of Joanna's continued grief.  I know Joanna is very conditioned to tragedy and can be introverted, and I liked the flirtation with Alex, but I also didn't like seeing the aftermath of Victor's demise being fast-forwarded through recently.  Anyway, while Tarkoff tried to goad Freddie into letting Joanna drink poisoned wine, he ultimately refused to comply after his mother gave a lovely speech about how much she loves her son.  An angry Tarkoff threatened to cut Grandfather's essence right out of that brand on Freddie's chest, but that wasn't happening, so the most he could do was suggest other violences.  Frederick seems to have begun this mission under the impression that he should do this to get his sisters back with him in Asgard, but now that he's newly bonded with Joanna, it will be intriguing to see how he can fight against his grandfather's plans.  I'm happy to see confirmation that Frederick's better nature can effectively combat his grandfather's manipulations and evil agendas.

Of Tarkoff, I must also observe that he still doesn't seem immune to Joanna's charms, which is interesting.  He doesn't seem entirely evil, but we shall see.

Wendy, Freya, Ingrid, and Dash attended a fancy art gala, wherein they all looked fantastic, and Wendy looked especially fierce and gorgeous in her midriff-baring number.  It turned out that the mysterious painter was Wendy's three-time-ex-husband Ronan, a totally enticing and irresistible con artist.  Even though I've enjoyed Wendy's relationship with Tommy, and she feels so contentedly in love with him, I have to admit that the scenes between Wendy and Ronan had me shipping them pretty much immediately due to the sizzling chemistry and sparky banter.

While Freya shot irritated glances at the flirty Ingrid and Dash, the two seemed oblivious, just as Ingrid had earlier when shaking off Freya's totally logical warnings about how Dash is going off the deep end lately.  No matter how sincere Dash's affections for Ingrid are (and they do seem to be very real), he was hella creepy throughout this episode.  Dash took things way too far in this episode, shamelessly!  He happened to run into the father of his blackmailer (who Dash killed a few episodes ago) and after learning that the man suspected him of doing what he had indeed done, Dash smoothly took Hutton outside and killed him with his warlock lightning.  As if that weren't horrific enough, Dash made things even worse by lying to Ingrid, again, about his actions.  The scariest part is that with each new wrong action, Dash is getting more cool and confident about doing "shudder"-worthy things, and he's now more out of control than ever.  It's awful that Ingrid and Dash's first kiss had to take place in circumstances like this, especially after the sweet interactions they had throughout the episode before Dash seized the opportunity to play God - or the devil - once again.

Don't forget to catch an all new Witches of East End, in two weeks on Sunday at 9/8c, Lifetime!  I'd also love to hear what you thought of this episode in the comments.

  2. Ingrid and Dash have great chemistry but l cant get behind them because it will end badly because of who Dash is , Ingrids relationship with Dash mirrors her past with Archibald she wasn't evil but fell for an evil man and chose his life over her family
Dash is really not that great of a person and his powers are revealing who he truly is, he was a goody two shoes with his mother but now that l think of it maybe Penelope liked him more because he was more like her.
Freya is pretty over Dash and is not jealous like some poster was saying , shes seen evil Dash in the past and it made her wonder how much she ever knew about him. They only knew each other for a short amount of time and quickly got engaged.
Wendy always awesome , my favourite.
Frederick loves his family regardless of some dubious action. I hope he doesnt die.
LOL at Eva as a granny l wasnt expecting that , shes an old powerful with. Killian should have called Freya for backup and explained everything to her.
Im waiting for the inevitable Freya vs Eva showdown l hope its epic.
Im suspecting Eva will escape but already be pregnant.
    I love this show.

Loving the show too! I agree on Freya not being jealous of Dash, she's so over him. And I concur on your points regarding Ingrid. She has a track record on this kind of relationship that is foreboding. However, I keep wishing things could be different because the chemistry between her and Dash is indeed awesome.

  6. I was really hoping against hope that were bringing in Bianca Lawson as a perm. member of the cast.. but should have known they'd end up eventually going to kill her off.... its bad enough they killed off the dad.. and Freya is getting on my nerves..

Good point about Bianca Lawson...she does tend to be the guest star a lot and it would be nice to see her as a main cast member of a show. I do miss Victor as well!

He's definitely on the dark side, and it's saddening. Great episode though!

  9. Pretty decent episode!!I have a feeling dash would get killed off by the season end as they are setting him up as a really bad person,he is really getting on my nerves!!

  10. Wasn't my favouritest episode this season yet but still a good one, some good developments. Frederick's girlfriend was very sudden, we haven't really seen him socialising at all with the whole Mandragora stuff happening so how did he find the time? Haha. Also, Eva's true face was very creepy, I hope Killian can break away from her spell soon, but she's definitely an interesting character and I wished she was more permanent as I love Bianca Lawson. There's something wrong with Dash. I thought it was just Freya's paranoia as we saw the circumstances before but now he's turning into a cold-blooded killer. I was shipping Team Dashing but now I'm not so sure. He's going crazy! Great review though.

Thanks! "Team Dashing"! I've never heard it before, I love it. I'm going to hang in there with that ship because I go for the crazy, dark ships anyway, but I really, really wish Dash wasn't becoming so evil.

Aw, I don't wanna see Dash go, but I completely understand why a lot of viewers would. There's no question he fully became bad in this episode and it was really creepy!

  13. Nice review! I really loved Frederick when he was around his girlfriend being embarrassed by his mother goofing off with Caroline."Between me, you and your boobs, maybe we could convince him to stay in East End a little longer" or something like that has cracked me up. Frederick was really adorable until Tarkoff came along. I really hate him!! He's so slimey. If he played in a calm, calculated and demeaning manner, he would be more convincing. He just went through with his spells. Blegh. He's like 400 years old or something like that, right? Surely he could do it better.

Killian could have at least called Dash or Freya? That's what I would do if I hadn't learned how to hone my powers. Run to others who had slightly or more experience. But then we would have Frillian reunion too soon and that can't be for the storyline's sake. Eva being old when Killian saw her, I think she's a parasite. Someone who steals the life-force from others in order to stay young. With her trying to become pregnant, I think she's using the baby to bind him forever to her. Soon Freya will sense that Killian is not really himself discover the truth and have a full out battle with Eva for Killian *I hope*.

As for Ingrid and Dash *I'm still holding off making up a couple name because of this*: I really liked them together at the party until Dash offed the briber's father with no hesitation. Dash has gone to the deep end. But I believe that's there a possibility for redemption for him. The redemption we're speaking of, is there in the form of Ingrid. But with the foreshadowing of Ingrid's past lives, I hope it won't cost Ingrid her life.

I didn't feel the chemistry with Wendy and the paramedic. Am I sorry for the chemistry between Wendy and Rowan? No. I could see why she was married to him THREE times! Hope he's staying around a little longer. Let him fight for Wendy with the other paramedic. Then Wendy can lay back for once and watch the sights of those men...

    What do you think, Virginia?

Thanks for the kind words and great comments. I loved Wendy and Ronan and hope we get to see these two together again! If I were Killian, I totally would have gone running to the Beauchamps for help instead of hanging out at home. Obviously, he knew from his own past recording she was up to no good, so why stick around? Agree about Dash - I hope he can find redemption, and I love him with Ingrid, but she needs to watch her back with him, too. Plenty going on in this show, that's for sure!

  15. Who are you rooting for? Wendy and Ronan or Wendy and the paramedic?

  16. Great review!I liked a lot this episode. I love Dash and Ingrid together but I'm worried because Dash is becoming. a cold-blooded murderer.Fredderick housing his father's spirit is an interesting fact. I prefer Tommy and Wendy together. Ronan seems a bad guy. I hope Eva storyline will finish soon because it's desesperating and I want to see Killian and Freya together.Killian could've run away instead of staying in the house! He's hot but he doesn't think a lot about things.

Thanks! LOL, I love your comment that Killian is "hot but he doesn't think a lot about things." Exactly! I can't wait to see him back with Freya. Eva is a fun villain, but I'm also getting tired of Killian being trapped under her thumb.

  18. This was a great episode. A bit slow-paced in parts but lots of great character building. Was thrilled to get confirmation of my suspicion that Freddie is not a willing villain and I really, really hope he finds a way to seek help from Joanna or warm her without getting killed himself. And I was screaming NOOOOO!!!! at Wendy when she kissed Ronan (especially with that sexy Latin beast coming home to her in a few days!) but was so happy when she let him go. I could relate to that scene ha.

And I am loving Dark!Dash. Very interesting that Ingrid is yet again being tempted by someone so dark and very much not good for her. I am reallllly hoping that as we get more into Dash and Killian's story that they'll explore Fair Haven's history a bit more and go back into that cult. And that would give them a reason to bring back Virginia Madsen for an ep which would be ahmahzing.

Oh and almost forgot to mention Killian and Ava...WTF! Biana Lawson is always up to trouble. Wonder if Killian will remember anything in the next episode.

Definitely Wendy and Ronan. :) But I do like Tommy.

Awesome idea about hearing more of the backstory of the Gardiners. Also, your comment, "Bianca Lawson is always up to trouble," lol - it almost *always* seems that way! :)

  21. Great review but it looks like we have to wait another week until we get to watch the next episode. I guess Eva is going to make him forget what happened in this episode I wonder if her goal is just to have a baby or to also steal his powers like I said before. I'm not sure if you've seen the trailer for next weeks episode but it looks like Frederick might also be into his sister at least that's kind of the vibe I got out of it. Am I the only one who thought that Killian was the one who would become the King's host? I mean I thought that back in episode two when the Mandragora was trying to find the right person and was just picking the wrong people.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We don't really know if that was an act to fool people because he could've been like his mother since he was a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just because he's bad doesn't mean he's going to get killed off he might even join The King's side for all we know.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This episode was weeks after killing the Mandragora so I'ad assume since then he's found the time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. True but like i said i went from loving this guy to completely hating his guts in one season. So,i would like to see him off this show-that's my personal preference, nothing more.It can happen or it can't,i really don't care.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I never liked him so nothing has changed for me except probably hate him even more what is he going to do kill everyone who catches on to his secret including Ingrid?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ingrid would most probably catch him red-handed or more likely-freya will show her somewhat oblivious sister his true nature in the finale.

Thanks! Imdb has the next episode's date as Sunday, but maybe that's wrong? I didn't get to see the trailer for the next ep thanks to Lifetime's annoying habit of making us watch ads for their "Lottery" show right after WOEE every week...lol. I'll check it out online. Interesting idea about Killian being the king's host, I never thought of that!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I saw it on Witches of East End's official twitter account because they didn't show it during Lottery I checked during both airings but tell me what you think after you watch it.

  30. Yeah, that's wrong the next episode is in two weeks I guess it's because of Labor Day. They did show the trailer during The Lottery I checked during both airings of Witches of East End and The Lottery you don't watch that show do you? Yeah, I thought at first that the Mandragora was doing something for the King in episode 2 because why else would you carve that symbol in them? And then they would say he's looking for a specific person so that's what got me thinking. The trailer to the next episode is at the Witches of East End's official Twitter account tell me what you think after you watch it. https://twitter.com/WitchesEastEnd/status/504648139744092162

  31. That's wrong the new episode airs in two weeks. I didn't see the trailer on Lifetime either because it didn't come on I checking during both airings of both shows even though I don't even watch The Lottery I usually do just to watch the trailer. I thought that about Killian since episode two because you know how the Mandragora was carving the King's symbol on everyone trying to find a suitable host for The King or for some other reason. Here's the trailer to the episode what do you think of it? https://twitter.com/WitchesEastEnd/status/504648139744092162

  33. No problem and so did I but am I the only one who thinks Frederick might have a thing for Freya as well?

I thought maybe Freddie was just being protective of Freya, but we'll see!

  35. This episode had a few 'sudden appearances'- Frederick's girlfriend Caroline, Wendy's three-time-ex-husband Ronan, and then Tarkoff. Storywise, it sort of seemed all over the place but I like WOEE way to much to get picky about it. I personally think this was one of the weakest episodes of this great season, but still, better than some episode back in season 1. So far, season 2 is fantastic and if the show keeps going like this, it will gain much, much more audience! I mean I remember back in Season 1 the WOEE postings had only a few comments and now look! It just shows how the show keeps getting better and better. I really enjoyed your review, and agree with you on virtually every point! I thought I wrote this lol. Great review.

Thanks :) Agree with your points, and the growing popularity of the show is wonderful to see!

  37. Do you think Eva retains her youth by eating a little more than just the placenta of her newborn?!?

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's because Bianca Lawson cannot carry a show by herself. The way she over enunciates the final "s" of certain words has always irked me to no end.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dash was a dull milquetoast in season one with no real plot of his own other than being Freya's fiance. At least this season Eric Winter has some interesting material to work with.
