The Strain - It's Not For Everyone - Review: "They're Hunting Us"

One thing that is interesting to me about The Strain is how quickly the episodes fly by, feeling as if only minutes have passed. Episode four, which aired Sunday, was no different. However, that is where the similarities to other episodes end. The gore and action scenes are plentiful in this episode of The Strain, almost doubling the amount we've seen in either episode two or three, which felt a little slow and lacking to me. Episode four, "It's Not For Everyone", is just what The Strain needed after the last two episodes and I think everyone will enjoy the direction the show is taking moving forward.

We learn a lot about our characters and where they stand in this episode. Alliances are forged between unlikely people and we have a better perspective of the virus and what it does. We have yet to learn the 'Why's", but that is understandable given it is only the fourth episode of a 13 episode first season. I love how faithful the creators and writers are to the source material, including the comics of which I am a huge fan. Nora is clearly having a difficult time adjusting to what is going on around her as Eph seamlessly aligns himself with Setrakian over how to handle the Viral creatures. After the way he dispatched Captain Redfern last week and his subsequent autopsy, we can think of Eph as someone who will stop at nothing to save humanity from The Master and it's clutches. However, Eph still is in the dark about The Master's involvement with the pandemic and with The Master's very existence as well. Lets hope that his new friendship and partnering with Setrakian will enlighten him to what is really going on and how he can assist with eradicating the virus and the predatory species.
This episode definitely upped the creepiness factor from previous ones. The autopsy of Captain Redfern was gruesome to say the least, which, of course, to horror fans makes it awesome. I am still astounded at the level of detail the creators have given to the creatures. Ansel Barbour's story line equally creepy now that we see him at the cusp of his transformation. One of the original four survivors, he valiantly recognized his own murderous and destructive inclinations, chaining himself inside the shed, but not before killing the family dog. I thought it was funny when Mrs. Barbour led the neighbor into the shed to be consumed by her husband after she found out the neighbor abused her dog.

Eph tries desperately to get Nora to join his newly discovered cause. She tells him pleadingly that they are not hunting human beings. Eph replies "They're hunting us". Eph explains that, as CDC epidemiologists, they have a duty to the people of New York (and everyone else I imagine) to eliminate any threat to their health. Now that it finally means something they have no choice but to help Setrakian after what they have seen. I admit that Eph has definitely gulped down the Kool-Aid, but it is making the series exponentially better now that there are more vampire creatures turning and at least Eph and Setrakian are hunting them. Now to just get Nora on their team and whoever else will come join them.

I imagine it is going to be difficult for Setrakian to bring people to his side against the terror that is now in the initial stages of demolishing and overwhelming New York City. He obviously knows more about what is transpiring than most people involved, but convincing Eph and Nora and anyone else will be a struggle in itself. He seem to have convinced Eph for the time being, but showing Nora what needs to be done and getting her on board appears arduous and time consuming.

Thoughts and Discussion

- Did you notice...Some of the creatures seem to transform quicker than others. Is there a reason for this that makes it an important aspect of the virus?

- Did you notice...Setrakian says this before decapitating the Arnot patriarch - "Sabia mea fredoneaza de argint" - Translated means, "My sword sings of silver." (how cool is that?!)

- Was the selection of the people on the Regis Air flight random or purposeful?

- How much does Jim Kent know and how much info has he given Herr Eichorst?

- Will it be easy for Setrakian and Eph to convince Nora, A Doctor and Scientist, what needs to be done about the epidemic? Maybe now that Eph is on board, Nora will find it easier to help and join Setrakian's cause.

I hope everyone enjoyed the episode and is enjoying the series so far! I think the episodes are going to keep getting better and better from here on out, especially now that Setrakian and Eph are working as a team.

  1. Excellent Episode and Review. Loved the autopsy scene, and thanks for the translation, very cool.

The wife leading the angry neighbor to the shed was great :)

  2. Thanks Sharon!

The autopsy was great. I really the Ansel Barbour plot line too. I bet it will get more interesting as she tries to deal with her husbands needs in that shed.

  3. This episode was really great. Things are really going to pick up fast now that they know the truth.

Can wait for the rat catcher to join their team as I suspect.
Love reading your reviews George. Thank you.

  4. The best episode to date yet. It's finally starting to speed up and get more crazy. The writing is also getting better, but there's definitely room for improvement.

  6. Thank you!

The Rat Cathcher - Vasily Fet - would be great on their hunting team! I can't wait to see if that happens. Maybe Gus too?

  7. I agree that it was the best episode so far. The pacing was much better and it felt like everything was moving towards a specific goal, which I think the other episodes lacked a little.

  8. It's interesting that Nora is reluctant about doing what needs to be done. I just hope the show doesn't go the predictable road and that she changes her mind because of something other than an infected loved one.

  9. Yeah, loved your review and most of the episode, although Gus' story seemed to stall the whole thing a bit. Anyways, great autopsy and final moments! I have to agree that Ansel's dog-hating neighbor really had it coming he he... Will the wife start feeding her husband though?

I would assume that the change period is probably based on the person themselves. Like all ailments, some can appear as minor complaints whereas some can actually die from it. So it's cool that it's affecting everyone differently at different times but they all end up the same way none the less. It's just great than Ansel had the brains to understand that what was happening to himself was not good for those around him. Probably confirmed by the fact that he ate the family dog.

  11. Thank you!

Lol, that was funny about the neighbor. I laughed when he took off his belt like he was going to hit the dog and then his surprise when she locks him in their. Lol, serves him right for wanting to hurt an animal. I was wondering also if she is going to start feeding her husband like a pet. I suppose it's on,y a matter of time though before Setrakian and the gang get to him when they go down the list of passengers from the manifest.

  12. I think you are right, it probably is dependent upon the individual how long the change or transformation happens.

  13. Hahahaha it's cool I wasn't the only one pissed at that neighbor! But yeah.. I don't think they can keep up that story either.

  14. Great episode and review! The autopsy scene was creepy and interesting. It helps you to understand how the body of vampires work. I always thought Eph would be the one who would refuse to kill the vampires.I think he will convince Nora at some point. I'm also intrigued about why some people of the plane stayed "alive" while others like the little girl were dead. I think is purposeful.
I feel sorry for the neighbor although he was a bad person and I wonder how the story of the latin guy will be connected with the vampires.

  15. that Nora chick is really working my last nerve...she's been going on and on about the old man (Abraham).. and what he said... she's as clueless as a box of rocks.. I would have thought that she would have been the one along with the old man and Ephraim would have been the one in denial....and clueless....

  16. I hope I don't sound like one of those snobby book people but for those who are complaining/questioning the time spent on Eph's family and on Gus and his family. They really do have a real importance to the story. They aren't just filler. I only say this because I don't want people to give up on the show.

  17. I agree, great episode!

Gus, the latino, did cross paths with Setrakian when he returned the clock Crispin stole, and I imagine their paths will cross again.

  18. Thank you!

Gus, the latino guy, is someone I was wondering how will come into the fold. He crossed paths with Setrakian in the pawn shop and I'm sure we have not seen the last of him. He appears to be someone you would want on your side in a fight, right, lol?

  19. Lol, that's funny. I thought the same thing that Eph would be the one unwilling to cooperate and 'release' the creatures the way Setrakian so easily dispatched them. I 'm sure it is only a matter of time before they convince Nora to join them.

  20. Very good point Jane! I hope no one is giving up on the show either because of that. I have read the books too and love them. It is difficult to write the Reviews sometimes because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, I love the story so much. They did a really good job with the books and glad they made a TV Series. Really excited to see how they show the ending of book 2 and all of book 3 on the TV Series, lol, I think it will be interesting, don't you think? Especially certain characters.

  21. Oh yeah, I remember now.
What I meant is that they don't have any connection with the virus itself.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, I understand. Yeah you're right they don't. After Gus transported the Box to where it needed to be there really is nothing connecting him now. Possibly in the future since they are keeping him around?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes maybe they will need him again for another task.
Only the future will tell us.

  24. I go to first stage now. Have not seen it.
