Teen Wolf - Time of Death - Review/Recap

18 Aug 2014

This week’s Teen Wolf, ‘Time of Death’ was a fantastic episode that dealt with the repercussions of the previous episode and brought us closer to answers about who the benefactor is. This episode was written by Angela L. Harvey and was directed by Jann Turner. In the U.S Teen Wolf brought 1.68 million viewers watching MTV, which wasn’t as big as last week’s 1.75 million but still very high.

This week’s episode starts off with Stiles in his bed with Malia trying to get comfortable with sleeping next to her, Malia ends up spooning Stiles which they are both comfortable with. This scene is quite confusing considering the last episode Malia walked off on Stiles because he was lying to her about her real father. We quacking learn that Stiles is by himself in his bed not being able to sleep because Malia is not with him.

We jump to the Sheriff Station where Scott is waiting on his dad, while he is giving a report on what happened at the school and how he had to shoot and kill the chemist to save Stiles’ life. Scott’s dad tells him he has to go up to San Francisco to file the full report and won’t be here for his first game of the season. Scott and he end up having a discussion about killing people and how his father deals with doing that, he says he used to deal with it by drinking but now he looks at it logically and compartmentalises it. Papa McCall ends the conversation telling Scott he knows there is something going on with him and his friends, and when he comes back he wants to be in the loop of things.

It’s funny when we first got introduced to Papa McCall, probably should start calling him by Raf McCall because he looks like he isn’t going anywhere, a lot of fans didn’t like him and wanted him to leave and mind his own business because he hasn’t been there for Scott for most of his life, but now I think he is growing as a character and especially a father. He is trying real hard to keep his promises to Scott and is truly trying to keep his son safe. I think with most characters at first glance you see only one layer to them and you either like them or don’t but the writers dig deeper into a character you see both their flaws and highlights and you learn more about them.

Kira, Scott and Stiles have now brought Liam into one of their crazy and extreme plans that usually involve a lot of danger and some results to their questions. Liam asks if they have done something dangerous and idiotic before in their plans and Kira answers for them that they have done both. When we are first introduced to their plan its jumps between all of them and doesn’t give the full plan to the audience, which is an excellent way to keep the audience guessing to what their plan is. So basically the gist of the plan is to make it appear that Scott is dead and they want the benefactor to come into the hospital to have visual confirmation of Scott’s “death” so they can try to find out the identity of the benefactor. The people that are involved with this plan is obviously Scott, Stiles, Liam, Kira, Kira’s mum (Noshiko) , Scott’s mum (Melissa) and Chris Argent.

We jump to Braeden and Derek in his loft, with Braeden curious as to why Derek still hasn’t healed. Derek being the gentleman is sleeping on the couch while Braeden is asleep in his bed. While Braeden lifts his top to look at his wound Derek wakes up and starts to flirt with her. Braeden being serious asks to see Derek’s wolf eyes expect when he tries to change nothing happens and it appears he is fully human. (hmm just putting it out there Braeden and Derek have been giving each other google eyes since they first saw each other and I’m not buying this stuff that they are just protecting their ‘investment’, something’s going on around here!)

One of the most heart wrenching scenes was seeing Melissa get the news that Scott had “died”, even though she was in on the plan we didn’t know she was when we saw her reaction to the news. That scene seeing Melissa fall to the floor and grabbing hold of the doctor while yelling was very well played and in my eyes difficult to watch. No mother should feel the pain of losing their son or hearing that their son is never going to come home and never hear their voice again. I was extremely happy that Melissa was in on the plan because if they made her go through that and didn’t tell her the truth that would be just plain cruel. However they did tell her last minute that if he Scott doesn’t get woken up within 45 minutes he will die for real.

Back to the flirting couple, Derek and Braeden, she patching him up and he is telling her that he has lost all of his supernatural werewolf senses, smell, hearing and speed. Braeden tells Derek that when you’re a human facing the supernatural you need to bend the rules a bit and she will teach him.

Throughout this episode we jump to Scott in his death/dream state a number of time each slightly different to the previous time but it usually starts off in the same way, him in the morgue trying to get out and ends up falling out of a locker in the school. In his dream state he sees Liam a number of times and each time he gets killed by the Assassin the Mute (which was killed by Peter in a previous episode) in each mini episode Scott has the Mute keeps telling him that he should kill Liam and this is what he needs to do, by the end of it he actually grabs the Mute’s weapon and stabs Liam with it continuously.

I think the main reason Scott had these dreams because he can’t bring himself to kill others, even if it means saving his friends. Scott needs to understand if he can’t gain the strength to kill one of the assassins he is basically making it easier for his friends to die. Scott always believes there is a way for people to be redeemed and saved. I think if they can get to the benefactor and stop the dead pool list the assassins would stop coming out of nowhere and trying to kill them, but it’s easier said than done.

We then jump to Malia looking through the Hale vault; well I guess her family vault, she goes to open the safe when it’s locked, so she uses her strength to pull it open and she finds a manila folder with the words Malia Tate – Adoption records. Just as she is about to open it Peter shows up behind her and says, “I gotta buy a better safe!”.

We jump back to the hospital parking lots with Melissa McCall and Noshiko Yukimura, they are waiting and watching to see if the benefactor comes in the hospital. This is an interesting scene between Melissa and Noshiko because it shows one worried mother and another one that believes that making their children face this makes them stronger. Melissa asks Noshiko, “Why are we doing this? Why are we asking them to fight these kinds of fights?” and Noshiko answers back very quickly, “Because otherwise we would be asking them to run and hide”.

We then see Stiles, Liam and Kira looking at the hospital footage to see if the catch the benefactor on screen. Liam points out the camera on the roof just lost its signal so Kira and Liam go and check it out.

Back to Malia and Peter, they have a stand-off and Malia challenges him and tells him that she thinks she can take him. Peter shows his strength by punching and nearby stone column and punches a hole through it, that’s when Malia backs down and goes to hand the manila folder back to Peter, however, he says that she can read it but not leave with it. I found this screen quite cute even though Peter is a psycho at the best of times he still believes in family and being there for them. Even when he wanted to became Alpha he never thought to kill Derek for it because it was still his nephew.

We see Lydia for the first time this episode, in her family’s holiday house, searching for something to connect with why Meredith had a picture of her inside this house. Lydia hearing footsteps in the house and grabs a boat paddle to hit the person but luckily stops just in time because it’s her mother that has walked it and scared the crap out of each other.

This scene between mother and daughter is really cute because we don’t see too much time between Lydia and her mother. Lydia questions why her mother knew she was at the holiday house and she says that she was getting things getting for the open house but Lydia catches her in the lie and her mother tells her the truth that she followed her down here because she has noticed that Lydia comes down there every weekend and sometimes during the week and she is worried about her. Lydia caves and shows the image of Meredith in the house and asks her mother if she knows her, her mother looks at the photo and says in confusion, “Meredith Walker?”.

On the roof Kira and Liam go to see what happened to the camera and when they get up there they are face to face with one of Kate’s berserkers, look who has arrived at the party, KATE! Inside the hospital all the lights have gone off and Chris Agent tells Stiles to stay with Scott and to text him if he sees or hears anything, while looking at his timer, its looks like Scott only has 18 more minutes left for them the walk him up or he dies.

Back to Derek and Braeden, Braeden is teaching Derek how to use a gun and how to pull one on someone before they can take it off him. After a few fail attempts of Derek trying to pull the gun on Braeden he pulls her in a kissing her, distracting her while putting the gun to her stomach. Looks like Braeden enjoyed the first kiss and pulls him to her again and they continue to kiss and he picks her up and puts her on the bench. See! I knew they were going to get together soon enough, all that flirting!

Kira and Liam try and fight the berserker by they aren’t strong enough, both Liam and Kira get knocked down and while Kira gets knocked out she dreams/remembers a time with Scott and her on his bed talking about going on a real date and maybe going to the movies, her dream time gets cut short when she gets pulled back in reality by Liam screaming for her to wake up because the berserker to coming towards them.

Stiles is freaking out in the morgue with Scott’s body trying to call Chris with no answer, when Kate comes in the room throwing Chris in. Kate wants Scott’s body to try to lure the benefactor herself, however, Chris and Stiles stand in her way.

Malia and Peter, out of all the hospital drama talk about Malia’s real mother. Peter is trying to find out who she is because he got those memories taken from him but so far he doesn’t have name yet just an alias which is ‘dessert wolf’ which also means the coyote. Peter starts to talk about the fire that that burnt him and put him in a coma for six years (ohh look it’s a peter pity party! hehe)

Jumping back to Lydia and her mother, they start to talk about Lydia’s grandmother which was her father’s mother. We find out that she died in Eichen House and she got cremated and Lydia’s father thought she was crazy because she used to hear things. Hmm kind of sounds like what Lydia does, maybe she was a banshee? Lydia asks why would she wanted her ashes in the holiday house and her mother tells her she didn’t, her grandmother wanted her ashes thrown over the lake by Lydia when she turned 18. And since there is a few weeks till Lydia turns 18 her mother thinks now is as good as a time than any. When Lydia opens the urn she realises it isn’t her grandmother’s ashes but mountain ash and when she throws the ashes to the lake she realises that the whole building is made of mountain ash.

Back at the hospital Kate and Chris are standing off, Chris with a gun to Kate’s head, they are both testing each other. I think even though Kate is meant to be the ‘bad’ one I think she just wants control over what she has become, and I honestly think she would not kill her own brother and nor Chris kill Kate.

In this intense moment between the two siblings, Stiles being Stiles interrupts saying, “well obviously you guys have a lot to talk about, I saw some coffee and a vending machine outside.” Got to love Stiles and his random ways to try and make the situation better. However Chris gets through to Kate and tells her they have a plan, at that moment she looks at his watch and sees the timer counting down and listens to Chris and commands her berserkers to leave.

In Scott’s dream state his last vision he sees is him over Liam’s body with blood all over his face having just killed and stabbed him, then his dream fades and he sees the faces of Kira, Stiles and Chris standing over him and he is brought back to life. YAY happy little dance, but I kind of figured they weren’t going to kill him, however, there is bad news for Kira. Her mother was badly hurt in the battle against the berserker and they have to transfer to a hospital in Palo Alto and Kira needs to go away to be with for mum for a bit.

Kate is shown going back to Peter, telling him he was right and Scott isn’t dead and Peter replies, “Thank-god!”. No idea what he is planning but with Peter it’s never good and always about power. Scott has a conversation with Kira about their plan failing but he thinks that it worked a little bit because the benefactor wanted evidence that Scott was dead but maybe the benefactor could sense what happened to Scott, maybe the benefactor is a banshee.

The final scene we see Lydia and her mother looking at different things from her grandmother and her mother pulls out a paper and says, “this is the last thing your grandmother wrote before she died, I don’t even know why I kept it because it’s basically nonsense”. But when Lydia looks at the paper she asks her mother if she is absolutely sure her grandma is dead because the paper isn’t nonsense it’s code. Lydia’s grandmother is/was a banshee!!!!

Another great episode of Teen Wolf, as we get closer and closer to the end of the season we are getting even closer to finding out who the benefactor is. I’ve heard through chatter that we will be finding out who the benefactor is next episode and the last couple of episodes explain something we didn’t know about the Hale fire.
