Great episode. The case of the week was emotionally powerful as was Rusty's confrontation with his mother. I was so proud of Rusty this episode. Standing up to his mother like that takes a lot of guts. It only shows how far he has come. And I find it interesting that he didn't deny being gay when her mother accused him of that. It looks like it may be explored in future episodes.

I've always loved Ever Carradine, she can play such great characters. She played a very true character caught in the cycle of addiction, blaming everyone except themselves and saying whatever they think will hurt the most. The scene in the halfway house with her and Rusty was truly powerful.

I don't think it's black and white on whether Rusty is gay or whatever. The guy is damaged in a way that he can't really figure himself out. Emotionally abused by an alcoholic parent, physically abused by the men in her life, and sexually abused when forced to fend for himself.

  5. This episode was too predictable. I find myself being bored way too often. I knew who did, again! I keep trying to hang in hoping for some glimmer of the spark that was The Closer but just hasn't matched the level of The Closer. I don't find the Rusty and his mother story arc interesting at all. The actors Graham Martin and Ever Carradine are excellent but what a surprise Rusty's mother used him and didn't make it to the half way house! If they then pursue Rusty being gay story arc then they are just taking the easy route, it's been done to death already.

I think for the past two seasons, like you say he couldn't really figure himself out because of the abuses he went through in the past. But it seems like this season, due to therapy and how much he has grown since the beginning of the series, Rusty is on the verge of dealing with the particular issue of whether he is gay.
