Brandon Routh, who played Superman on the big screen in Bryan Singer’s 2006 tentpole Superman Returns, has joined the cast of the CW’s superhero drama Arrow as this season’s main recurring guest star. He will play Ray Palmer, a scientist and inventor who will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak as the new owner of Queen Consolidated.In the DC Comics mythology, Palmer is known as The Atom, making Routh a two-time DC superhero.

I suppose that he won't start out with his powers....or hopefully won't obtain them at all untill his final Arrow episode. I'm sort of hoping that this 14 episode deal actually means Arrow/Flash appearances.

ReplyDeleteGreat news! I always thought that he was a brilliant Superman, and he was great on Chuck and Enlisted so I'm very happy about this. I've got no idea who the character is but hey, I'm still looking forward to it.

ReplyDeleteHe didn't write the creepy-stalker-deadbeat-dad aspect of the movie, plus he had to channel Chris Reeve, so he really didn't get to make it his own.

ReplyDeleteYup. Superman returns was actually successful at the time. Well received by critics and successful at the box office. For some reason (let's call it the nickleback effect), society just decided it was the worst film ever a couple of years later.

ReplyDeleteHonestly I can't really remember it, I just remember thinking that I liked him as Supes. But he was great in Chuck! As far as plot and other cast members go I can't really remember what happened in Returns haha. Tom Welling will always be my favourite Clark I think though.

ReplyDeleteI will forever see him as the jerkface "Daniel" on Chuck...but it's nice to see Felicity have a love interest since Barry kinda just up and left...(yeah he was in a coma, but he had a thing for Iris while he was kinda interested in Felicity)
ReplyDeleteI have an irrational hate for only one fictional character and that is Daniel Shaw on 'Chuck' played by Brandon Routh. Routh's terrible performance and acting pretty much made a majority of S3 episodes unwatchable (for me)

I applaud the idea of using superpowers, as long as there's some plausibility to said superpowers. We also know that Ray Palmer, on Arrow, is mostly interested in Queen Consolidated because of its Applied Sciences Division. I'm sure during the latter half of the season, Palmer will have the abilities to become The Atom.
I remember him from last season "partners" i liked that show.

ReplyDeleteThey always insisted on Arrow being 'grounded' and 'real' thus that show couldn't be tied to Smallville (and various other stuff they now made redundant)
As much as I respect these writers they went back on their original premise to keep this show superpower free and it kind of feels like they lied to our faces
I'm still the first one to say that Justin Hartley is a better actor than Amell and fits the part better but with the excuse that the show would be power free I accepted the recast. Now? I'm torn. I like Amell, he seems like a really nice and dedicated guy but if I had to decide between these two I'd have to go with the better actor....who isn't Amell...
I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt with thinking that theCW pushed them to do 'The Flash' rather than being their decision.
The way they inserted the Flash did feel sort of 'off' to me (still not a fan, especially after seeing that lackluster pilot)
he was okay as Dylan Dog and sure was a bette Supes than Cavill (not saying much but he's acceptable)

ReplyDeleteNever watched Chuck but I heard from friends that he was good on the show. I saw him on Partners and was surprised at how much I liked him, he was really good as the sweet, innocent/dumb, pretty guy.
ReplyDeleteI just watched clips of him in Scott Pilgrim and I liked him in that as well. If the limit the character and play to his comedic timing I think it'll work.
I'd have to disagree Hartley was good but his character itself was kinda annoying all he did was get drunk and angry over and over. He was good as womanizer Oliver, but I never felt he could kick ass believably unlike Amell, and he could never convey that drive to better the world and do good that Amell does so well. In the beginning I'd have agreed with you but Amell for me has really grown into the role and does a great job portraying facets of Oliver's personality in the present and the island. But that's just me.

ReplyDeleteJustin Hartley, to me, is too clean-cut pretty boy to play a vigilante who beats the crap out of criminals every night, and is as damaged as Arrow's Oliver. For an arrogant, sexy playboy, he fit the bill. For the additional toughness and grit this show required, Amell is the better choice. (Not trying to knock Hartley as an actor, but this was not the right role for him in my opinion.)

ReplyDeleteI always have a problem with male actors with pretty and almost perfect face. That square jawed hero look. Stephen has it too but the facial hair helps him. I had the same aversion towards the guy who played Adam Donner last season.

But his character in the end was so evil and a horrible guy, so I can't see him as a hero or a good guy for sometime (I tried to watch his Superman movie recently but couldn't power through). Hopefully this role will prove me that he can play a more good character than Shaw! The actor seems very humble and fun in interviews :)
ReplyDeleteWell it's not like Hartley is Christian Bale, and that blonde too much green version of smallville was lame IMO... One focal point: now that there is Flash around we cant actually pretend that arrow keep being a superpower free show, that will be unplausible. In conclusion no, amell isn ot a good actor but hartley its not that much better.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I'm happy about this I mean I know he can handle fight scenes and all but his face is sooo wooden he is not good in emotional scenes and I can't see him as anyone but creepy Daniel Shaw, but then again aside from Laurel, ARROW's casting is usually spot on so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, guess we'll have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteKreisberg didn't need to listen, because it's absolutely fine to use superpowers on the series. The first season made sense because we're introduced to the world, but nothing wrong with bringing in superpowers, especially when it has some scientific plausibility(albeit with an heightened fantastical level to it). Yes, the writers and producers were inspired by Nolan's world when creating a grounded, "realistic" world albeit with the obvious "comic book-y" feel, but it doesn't have to be exactly what Nolan did. Arrow's writers can easily move into the realm of superpowers and it's been doing a fine job doing such, imo.

ReplyDeleteI heard that they said it was going to be grounded in reality but I believe it still can be with superpowers as long as they do it right and I believe with The Flash and Arrow they can.
ReplyDeleteThought he was great as Superman, and hopefully his role will be better written than "evil soap opera villain" Daniel Shaw. He was good in the show initially, but once he became the bad guy it went down hill. I would rather just anything after Chuck's proposal in the hospital, as Shaw's resurrection was terrible and sullied all that came before it.

ReplyDeleteThat was mostly from the first season, and it's as if people started to hate the "grounded" aspect as soon as The Avengers was released, but Arrow can still have be in some "grounded" reality and still use superpowers if it's not too far fetched. When magic and sorcery starts to show up, then that's when the "grounded" aspect has been thrown out of the figurative window.
ReplyDeleteJustin Hartley, to me, would seem like the perfect Hal Jordan if Green Lantern ever showed up on TV. As soon as Arrow was announced, I always thought it was cool to use Hartley on the series, but as Green Lantern…but, perhaps that is wishful thinking as we may not get anything alien-related on the series. Once you bring in Green Lantern, you bring in another world, really.
ReplyDeleteYeah, bringing Hartley to Arrow in a different role would be fine. A nice little nod to Smallville which obviously gave the character of Green Arrow the fame and notoriety needed to have his own show (he was a fairly anonymous character to mainstream audiences before that).
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'm okay with mild sci-fi like the Mirakuru or Barry getting powers after being struck by lightning. I just don't want them to make it pure fantasy, like Smallville - I don't think it would mesh well with the show's tone and style. The more outlandish stuff should be kept to The Flash.
ReplyDeleteEven the more "outlandish" stuff, I feel, should stay off The Flash too. Both Arrow and Flash should have this sci-fi element to it, but on a plausible front. Keep magic, keeps aliens, away from both shows.
