Arrow & The Flash - Not part of the DC Movie Universe

Thanks to Nirat for the heads up.
During the session, Johns stated definitively that “the film and television universes for DC Comics ‘are separate worlds.’”

“Arrow and The Flash create a huge DC universe for us. And it’s going to live and breathe and grow,” he continued. “We also want to let the creators tell the best stories they can with these characters without putting them in a box, so to speak. And so we want to do the best TV show, television series we can possibly do with the DC universe with these characters.”

Fans hoping for a narrative structure similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that happily includes both of the ABC series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming Marvel’s Agent Carter, as well as the forthcoming Netflix block of series, are sure to be disappointed. While the dark world of Arrow‘s Starling City would seem to slip easily into the tone of the nascent DC Movie Universe as established in the Henry Cavill-fronted Superman film, it appears it is not meant to be, at least for the time being.

I wonder if they'll be allowed to use Bat-Family characters now...
The Arrow creators have mentioned really wanting to bring Nightwing in (and Mark Pedowitz was open to another spinoff). Make it happen CW. Nightwing + Arsenal + Kid Flash + 2 others means we could get that rumored Young Justice summer show too...

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see more spinoffs in the DC comics tv world. But it really depends on the survival and popularity of both The Flash and Gotham. If both experience great popularity then both CW and FOX will try to expand within 2-3 years.

    It needs to happen already!

  7. I would love a Nightwing show.

  8. Of course they're not part of the DC movie universe, they're actually written competently. That rules them out of having anything to do with the DC movies right there.

  9. I am actually glad with this decision. The tv shows will have so much freedom to introduce characters otherwise unavailable and to even change comic canon.

  10. Great news. Shield is so limited because they're so many characters and stories they're not allowed to use/tell. This leaves DC T.v. wide open.

  11. Also I think Wally West will be Flash in the movies and they will have Barry on TV. I think they made the right choice to keep the TV universe and the Movies universe separated.

  12. I don't really think Marvel has a problem in this regard. They have between 5,000 and 7,000 characters, depending on which Disney executive you ask, and the concepts behind them are generally simpler than DC's are. The new Big Hero 6 movie is a good example of the deep field that SHIELD could work with in terms of stories and themes.

This! The latest Superman was such a snoozefest!

  15. I like it, but I don't think it necessarily means freedom. I reckon DC will still restrict them from introducing major characters like Batman, and possibly even Nightwing. I just don't see it happening for various issues.
