As you probably know, the Character Cup officially starts on Sunday but before we get to the official polls we need to clear up a few nominations and ranks. There were 2 instances when the top vote getters for a show ended up in a tie so you need to choose which character will represent the show. Please do not vote in nomination polls if you do NOT watch the show. The ranking polls are so that no one can be mad at me when the brackets come out. These would be characters that got the exact same number of nominations. Normally I would just do that alphabetically but since rankings do determine what characters are matched up for the first round, I decided that you should make that determination, not me. Polls will be open until noon Friday CST. You can only vote for one character per poll. I will post the completed brackets either tomorrow after the vote or Saturday. Don't forget to sound off about your picks in the comments section. Happy voting!
PS - Just because a show is not in these polls does NOT mean that they are out of the contest. The top 12 votes and a handful of others had unique numbers of nominations and therefore are already ranked.

ReplyDeleteJust a reminder - these are not the only characters in the contest. Many of them did not need a poll to rank them. Also, no matter how they do here, all of these shows WILL be in the contest. That said, here's my votes:
ReplyDeleteOriginals - none because I don't watch it
Graceland - definitely Briggs. Mike has been a douche all season and Paige is not as well developed as a character.
1. this was hard because both are great characters. I ended up going with Finch.
2. another toughie because again I love both, but I have more history with Buffy so she gets the nod
3. Barney, easy because I don't watch The Good Wife and Barney makes me laugh
4. Scully was my first TV role model so she gets it although I like Sarah too
5. Bellamy merely because I haven't marathoned the rest of Penny Dreadful yet
6. Veronica Mars hands down because she's the only character I like in this list
7. hardest one yet because none of the characters stick out more than the others for me. I went with Ziva because she's a kick butt female
8. Brennan because i haven't seen enough of Chuck and I don't like the others
9. I only know 2 of these characters and May is more action oriented than Watson
10. Going with the Doctor but I was really close to voting Annie
11. Going Graceland in the hopes that Briggs gets it, but Lagertha was a close second

ReplyDeleteHa! I expect that it will not get easier once the contest starts. I inevitably find that 2 of my most favorite characters go against each other in the first round, and at that point it actually counts.

#9: Melinda May - AOS. I would have voted for The Originals but Ming-Na (who plays May) was in SGU(Stargate Universe) which is my all-time favourite show! Plus May is pretty badass!
#10: Kiera Cameron - Continuum. I nominated Kiera and don't watch any of the other shows in this poll so this was an easy one too.
#11: Mary, Queen of Scots - Reign. I hesitated with this one because I still haven't decided if I still like Reign or not, but I do like the character so I voted for her. Also I don't watch any of the other shows in this poll either :/
Im looking forward to this, thanks for putting it together :) Until I saw Bellamy & Vanessa up there it never occured to me that I might have to choose between two of my favourites! And now that i've seen Julia from Helix there too im looking forward to any other surprise characters that made it through :)

ReplyDeleteAt least, personally I had no problem picking Finch. Especially since The Blacklist lost me in the second half of the season and I'm still not sure if I actually want to catch up.
Hmm. Disqus ate my first response so let's try that again. All of the characters in the ranking polls are guaranteed into the first round. It is just my hopefully more fun and definitely more convoluted approach to the draw. This way when people's favorite characters go up against each other in the first round, I can assume none of the blame. It will also hopefully keep any conspiracy theories abut rigging the draw at bay. :-) (Yeah probably not.)

These contests sometimes get very difficult becaus inevitably 2 of your favorites will go against each other before you're ready to let one go. The good thing is that is usually strikes up a great conversation and you get to relive your favorite memories of them. Small consolation I know.
ReplyDeleteI've found The Blacklist's pace to be far too slow at revealing the central mytharc and put it on hiatus twice myself. It's much better as a marathon show.

ReplyDeleteI think narrowing it to only one character per show is going to work well, despite the initial protests it will inevtiably get. At least in the beginning there will be some variety though it will likely end up typical in the end. What can you do?
ReplyDeleteMeh. One character per show means less likely that all the typical ones will be in the final (SPN, BATB, Mentalist etc). As much as I don't mind them being in the final because they have big fanbases and deserve it because of it, I cannot stand the constant bitching from people in the comments "oh the worst show wins" etc.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, deep sigh. The #2 rule of this contest is going to be...Leave your sour grapes on the vine. Anyone complaining will be referred to that rule plus be given tips on how to help their favorite show if they are willing to put in the effort. Hopefully that will silence the downers.

ReplyDeleteJust one last technical detail before I sleep. In the case that anything ends up in a tie, the tiebreaker will be alphabetical order of the show's name.
ReplyDeleteEverything in these polls is automatically in the contest. This just determines their ranking. Ichabod did surprisingly well in the nominations and will enter the contest at either the 17th or 18th position out of 64. That puts it 3 steps away from facing either The Mentalist or Beauty and the Beast, which of course are the big giants.
