True Blood – Jesus Gonna Be Here - Review: "The Beginning of the End"

23 Jun 2014

Finally, after waiting almost a year, the seventh and final season of True Blood has arrived. “Je
sus Gonna Be Here” just aired and I’m still under the shock. It was a terrific season opener, I’m really into this Apocalypse storyline, I think it’s the perfect storyline for a final season, it really raises the stakes.
Also, this storyline is great because it involves everyone in Bon Temps. Often, one of the flaws of True Blood has been the amount of different storylines not finding a common point, therefore some characters and storylines felt quite boring. I love it so much when all the cast shares scene together, and when there is no boring sub stories going on. Just like it did last year, True Blood really came back to its roots, and yet it has succeeded in renewing itself and finding new interesting stories for every characters. "Jesus Gonna Be Here" is exactly what I love about True Blood : funny lines, action, vampires, surprises, twits and nudity.
The only weak part was the absence of Eric Northman… Where are you handsome ? … And Tara’s death. Actually, for that part I just don’t believe it yet. We did not watch Tara die on screen. Of course, her mother was full of blood and why would she be lying about her daughter's death ? Well, she never has been the most trustworthy character on this show. (and denial is a part of grieving after all).

Poor little Sookie. Our heroin had a rough time in “Jesus Gonna Be Here”, just like in the first season. Sookie Stackhouse is the misunderstood girl in town. She is special, she is a fairy telepath and her attraction towards vampires caused all the mess in Bon Temps, including the attack in the first scene.
It was a perfect way to open the episode, right where it ended last year. Everyone was running, screaming, everyone was in danger and those infected vampires are quite scary…. And they killed Tara ! Anyways, after everybody found shelter at former Merlotte’s now Bellefleur’s, Sookie was overwhelmed with everybody’s thoughts, and especially how they felt she was responsible for everything. And even Alcide, her boyfriend shared the same thoughts. So, when they got home they had a flight. I loved it. Sookie was fun, I loved everything she said, it was so true. She is a telepath so Alcide has to accept it. She was better with Bill, at least she didn’t know his thoughts.
And at the end of the episode, at the church, during daylight, Sookie made her speech. It was powerful, nice written and well acted by Anna Paquin. It felt very sincere and I kinda took pity on Sookie. Okay, she made bad decisions but Bon Temps is her town, it’s where she has always lived, those are the people she knows since she was little so she loves everyone of them. I hope Bon Temps population will be nicer to Sookie, especially Tara’s mother. I get why she is upset with Tara’s death, I’m very upset myself (killing my favorite in the first episode of the final season… it’s harsh) but Sookie always has been there for Tara, and her mother always has been a terrible person to Tara. She definitely should be more comprehensive.

Tara’s death was a major event in the episode. Of course, it had affected Sookie because Tara was her best friend, and she was her only support in Bon Temps. She often told the people of Bon Temps the truth about themselves and defended Sookie. Jessica was also touched by Tara’s death, they were friends, sharing their new vampire conditions. They shared something last season and so it was normal Jessica was touched by the news of her death.
Jessica was at the Bellefleur’s when she got the news, offering her protection to Andy for his daughter. Jessica still feels guilty over killing the other four fairies. And I absolutely loved the scenes between Jessica and Adilyn. It was so sweet how they got to know each other, and how they developed a bond. Jessica was very protective, still attracted to Adilyn's blood but also feeling so guilty for killing her sisters. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I could clearly feel some attraction between them. They could form a wonderful couple. We’ll see that in the next episodes I guess. Jessica already got a boyfriend, James (now played by Nathan Parsons) but their relationship is not made to last I guess…

Because James made a confession to Lafayette. After the attack of the infected vampires, following Sam’s rules 'every human needs a vampire', Lafayette got back home safe with James. And we got to know more about James’s backstory. He was in Viet Nam, during the war, and when he was the only member of his team returning alive to the US. When he visited his boyfriend’s home, to say his goodbye, his boyfriend's dad dad beat him in the street, leaving him for dead. That was when a vampire took pity on him and turned him.
So James is gay. That was a surprise for me, ok he wasn’t very manly last season but that didn't mean anything. Clearly, there was something between Lafayette and him, I really want to see more of them. And now we can understand better why Luke Grimes left the show. He stated he wanting to do True Blood to be with Deborah Ann Woll, and that was last season was about but in this season, I doubt James and Jessica will spend much time together. I can see other couples forming.
Nathan Parsons did a wonderful job, I must say I was a bit surprised at first, in his first scene of the episode. But he really proved himself and showed his talent during James’ speech at Lafayette. So I'm fine with him being the new James. I really want to see him interact more with Lafayette.

Other parts of the episode focused on the Bon Temps sheriff department, Jason and Andy, and Sam the new Mayor trying to control their town.
Sam got seen by his former opponent turning into a dog, but he agreed to shut up for now. I’ve never really liked Sam’s stories. it was so bad with his brother. Now, he’s the Mayor, his pregnant girlfriend has been kidnapped by vampires and he will soon be outed as a shape shifter. That is way more interesting so I’m glad finally Sam becomes more important. I really want to see what will happen to him next.
As for Andy and Jason fighting off rednecks in Bon Temps, it was fun but not that interesting. I liked it when Bill showed up and defended Andy, it was nice and they could form a great team against those infected vampires.
I liked Jason’ story with Violet way better. At last, Jason finally took back the power in their relationship and fucked her. It was so funny at first to watch Jason being so submissive to her, but it was a bit weird, very different from him. It was nice to finally make Jason grow. And Violet really grew on me too. She is so fun and bad, she is exactly what Jason needs. I’ve never been a big fan of Jason, but with Violet, they are a great couple, it really put Jason on a new level and it's far more interesting. I hope they'll end up together.

“Jesus Gonna Be Here” was really a wonderful episode, because its plot involves every characters on the show, it was nice to see everyone -but Eric :( and I hope the season will continue in that direction.
Also, the episode showed us how much all the characters have grown and changed since the beginning of the show and in the same time, it was full of references to the show’s history. It even featured Fantasia ! I’ve never thought we would see that place again.
And speaking of Fantasia, Pam wasn’t included in the story about Bon Temps, because she was actually in Morocco.

She was in only two scenes but oh great she was (as usual). I love Pam, also known as Mrs Go Fuck Yourself. I loved every lines she said during her Russian roulette. I kinda shared her opinion of God. Luckily, she survived the game and asked where her maker is !
Of course, Pam is on a quest to find Eric, since he started to burn in Sweden last season. I don’t understand why she is in Morocco and not there in Sweden but I really hope we will see Eric in the next episode. I wish the last scene of the episode would have been Eric Northman, being locked up somewhere…

Vampires notes :
• What was the whistle that made all the infected vampires go away ??? Is someone controlling them ?
• Fantasia : Arlene, Holly or Nicole ? Who will die first ? My money is on Holly… :(
• How will Andy react when he finds Jessica in his home ? Luckily, it's quite easy to rescind an invitation.
•  Which side are you on ? Sookie or Alcide ? I’m definitely for Sookie ! (Leave Alcide and get back with Bill already)

What did you think of “Jesus Gonna Be Here” ? Are you excited about True final season ?

    A couple of editing points:
-You might want to refer to Sookie as a "heroine" not "heroin."
-The bar is "Fangtasia" not "Fantasia"

  7. To clarify: James was/ is not gay. James was referring to the death of his best childhood friend, not a romantic relationship.

  8. Also, while James did indeed lose all his childhood friends in the war, he himself did not serve in Vietnam due to his pacifist beliefs/ he was a draft dodger. This was the reason for the rage against him from father of his best friend, which ultimately led to James becoming a vampire. The father of his best friend, in a state of extreme grief over having just been informed news of his son's death in the war, beat James with a baseball bat and left him for dead in the street. A vampire took pity on him and turned him.

  9. I'd hoped we'd get some scenes in Sweden. Maybe we still will but Eric's Viking heritage is so important to him, I'd think Scandinavia would be the first place Pam would look for him. My take on the situation was Pam had already been searching for Eric for some time and was tracking him across the globe. I love Eric but Pam is my personal fav so more Pam screen time is the silver lining in this storyline for me.

I have to disagree about any kind of romantic connection between LaLa/ James or Adilyn/ Jessica. With James/ LaLa, we simply witnessed the one vamp for one uninflected human 'solution' (an utter failure of a 'solution' based on what we've seen so far).

With Adilyn/ Jessica, Jessica is trying to make amends while still dealing with an enormous amount of guilt over losing control and killing Adilyn's sisters. Also, Jessica was an inexperienced teen girl when she was turned so I think she still relates best to teen girls. She has also longed for a best friend/ sister type bond throughout the series and she has often lamented over having missed out on typical teenage girl things so I think this is the connection we are seeing with Adilyn. Plus, Adilyn is an underage, young teen girl (even younger if one factors in the rapid fae growth) so any kind of romantic connection would be pretty icky.

  10. Great Review Romain! Good Job!

I'm interested to see how the Pam/Eric Storyline plays out; I think it's very interesting. Also, Jason's relationship with Violet seems that it will be a lot better now that Jason is...ummmm....leveling the playing field.

Look forward to your future reviews of True Blood!

  11. Oh and I like your addition of "Vampires Notes".

I was also wondering what that whistle was that called out to the Hep-V Vamps and made them retreat (I guess 'retreat' is not the best word, but whatever it was it made them leave).

I would also say Holly is the first to go.

I don't think Andy will have a problem with Jessica. I think one way or another Andy will forgive Jessica for what she did and she will continue to protect his family. My guess is that she will end up saving his or Adilyn's life.

  12. That was my very first thought as well. It throws out the lore we have always been told.

  13. In an interview, Rutina Wesley said that Tara was indeed dead but maybe not gone. So maybe we will see her again in one form or another. And I agree that the staging of the death was done in an odd, incomplete manner for such major character.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Again - we did not see Tara die nor Eric die. As Tara's maker she would know and as Eric's progeny she would have known.
    A theory - Tara glam'd Momma - for what reason I'm not entirely sure. . . . But I wouldn't be surprised all if she isn't dead.

  15. Yeah, but if the showrunner is planning a surprise twist where she isn't dead, she would not admit that in an interview.
