The Musketeers - Geek Syndicate Interview with Adrian Hodges

17 Jun 2014

Here's the link to Geek Syndicate's follow up interview with Adrian, there's lots of chat about lessons learnt from the first season and teasers about what to expect in the second. What do you think of the slightly darker vibe and direction the show will be taking, are you looking forward to seeing Marc Warren's Rochefort, what do you make of any of the other hints about the characters? We love to hear your theories so please sound off below!

  1. I'm loving what Adrian is saying about Constance's character, a change of direction and a bit of a life away from the Musketeers is what I think most of us have been wanting her to have this season, so this is awesome news! Also it's very interesting that someone will still be on the case about it being Aramis who made Anne pregnant in S1, I'm glad that hasn't been dropped just because Capaldi left.

Another great interview tbh, a lovely relaxed style and some lovely teasers, couldn't ask for more :)

  2. Thanks Sandi for letting us know. :)

It was another good interview by the boys, they really put Adrian at ease and I hope they do a third interview just before series 2 actually airs.

It was good to hear that the next series will suit the 9pm slot more than the last series did, that Porthas will get a major storyline next year, that Constance will develop away from D'artagnan and the Musketeers ( as well as with them ) and has moved up in the world and finally that D'artagnan will have storylines away from Constance and continue to develop into a legendary Musketeer. Whilst I love D and C together, I don't want Constance to define D'artagnan.

  3. Oh and I was interested to hear him say that Athos probably meant what he said to Milady about killing her should she appear in Paris again and that the writers had to find a way of having her back in the show without Athos having to carry out his threat, at least at this point.

  4. Thanks v much Sandi for the link - the lovely Barry has kept his promise very quickly! Look forward to catching up with the interview after I've watched Brazil v. Mexico.

  5. Yes, I hope that we get a third one too, maybe just after the new year or something would be very cool. Like you say, it really feels like Adrian is very much at ease chatting away with Barry and it's a joy to listen to them talk about the show, both past and future.

I'm also pleased to hear that they have definitely got the 9pm slot too, the non-watershed material was one of the bigger issues for many people who turned away from the show last year I think. Having a darker feel and more room to explore adult issues will help no end, as will the over all arc continuing throughout the series as a whole hopefully.

It seems like they are going to be covering a lot of things that we have speculated on and/or have wished for ourselves the last few months, which is also very encouraging and great to hear from the horses mouth. I think we are going to be getting a fantastic season 2!

  6. We are indeed, so far this fandom has been great experience, which isn't always the case when it comes to fandom so we are very lucky! Great producers who are happy to share little hints and photos, and fans who happily chat and theorise together :)
Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the interview later on, enjoy the match hun!

Hey everyone, Barry here...hope you don't mind me stopping by but I just wanted to say I'm really glad that everyone so far has enjoyed the interview and to thank you for the lovely comments. As I said to Sandi I'm not a professional interviewer and we do Geek Syndicate well because we're geeks at heart and we love this stuff! As you could probably tell I'm a huge Musketeers fans so it was pleasure for me to get to bend Adrian's ear about the show again. All things being well my plan is to do another interview with Adrian maybe during series 2 or directly after.

  8. Hi Barry, pleasure to see you here! Thanks again for the fab interview and the heads up on when it would be posted, I know many were eager to hear it after how well the first one went down. Must been a dream interview as a huge fan of the show, I'm looking forward to the ext one already :)

  9. Thanks Sandi for posting the link and a huge thanks to Barry for a great interview. It answered so many questions that we've all been kicking around for a while. I know many if us will be delighted that we can expect a series much more tailored to post watershed scheduling next time around and I look forward to seeing what scope this gives the writers to delve deeper into the characters. Really excited about Constance's new role and what seems to be an elevation in society. I think we may be right with our predictions of a new role at Court for her and hopefully the potential that will bring for her character to generate, as Adrian suggests, stories that are not necessarily dependent on The Musketeers and her complicated relationship with D'Artagnan. I like that we'll explore the complexity if her dilemma much more but I would sound a note of caution that I really hope it doesn't become a case of "poor Constance." I also hope that they don't dilute what is a wonderful and highly charged chemistry between the two. Too much proximity runs the risk if being boring but equally if the characters become too isolated from each other, or the bond is compromised too much by additional parties, it runs the risk of being destroyed by neglect.

I genuinely can't wait for Rochefort. I'm delighted that they aren't following canon on this and have instead created their own nemesis who sounds deliciously complicated. We can only guess at his catastrophic grand plan.

  10. I've got no idea what's going to happen with Constance and Bonacieux - whether the producers will allow her to make that total break or not - but if she and D'artagnan become lovers again, I'd like it done properly - it lasts more than half an episode this time and it's done to better suit a 9pm slot, not in terms of sex scenes ( they can be a turn off ) but in terms of sensuality, if that makes sense.

I did like Adrian saying that they have to strike a balance between D'artagnan's love affair with Constance and him moving forward as a Musketeer to fulfil his "destiny" as Adrian put it. I'd hate either character to be tied to the other when it comes to storylines because the audience will get bored with them. When Barry said that Constance seems different in the filming pics that have been released, at least it got confirmation from Adrian that she has indeed moved up in the world. :) The producers might be more careful now about what images they release, lol.

On the same note, will Athos have truely moved on from Milady? Aramis being away from his son will no doubt play a significant role in series 2, as Adrian seemed to indicate.

  11. I completely agree. It's impossible to know if this version of Constance will ever make, or attempt to make, a break from her marriage. I just hope she isn't condemned to wallow in her misery. Writing for a post 9 pm slot does allow them the scope to explore the passion and intensity between Constance and D'Artagnan in a more adult and convincing way. I think it is likely that you will see more physically intimate scenes between them at some point, indeed my guess would be that any love scenes in general, between characters will now be more intimate. I don't think however that it's likely to be gratuitous and if it's done in the right way, it should reinforce the extent of the love, as well as the desire and passion that exists between Constance and D'Artagnan. It should allow the audience to see that this isn't merely a bored housewife having a fling with her former lodger but an rather an overwhelming love, attraction and compulsion which neither or them can withstand or deny. Which may even be dangerous in it's intensity and is certainly life changing for both of them. It ratchets up the stakes and that can only be good.

  12. Only just got round to listening to this and, as I expected, it was extremely interesting. It's fascinating to hear about the writing process for a show like The Musketeers and learn how they put the show together. For example, I would never have guessed how the various episodes were simultaneously at so many different stages of development while the show is actually being recorded, ie some are already in the can, whilst others, towards the end of the series, are still being written. I'm very pleased to hear about the continuing story lines and that the show will be back in the same slot starting in January 2015, rather than being moved around and possibly put back to later in the year due to scheduling / ratings considerations.

Thanks Barry and Adrian, you're both top blokes!

  13. Hmmm, listening to this bit again -

Constance is "trapped in a loveless marriage and in those days it wasn't easy to walk away from all that, so that's something we really explore in the second series, what the implications are if you're going to walk away from a marriage, whether you can, how hard it is. She loves a Musketeer who hasn't got a bean and she's married....... And because she's not posh, she's not upper class, she can't easily just take a lover, so we're really pushing that in the next series""
I think there's a 50/50 chance Constance will walk out on her marriage early in the series ( sort of ) or at least take D'artagnan as a lover again but she finds it's not as easy as she thought it would be. It would allow the writers to give D'artagnan romance in series 2 - like with the other 3 - without having him look at other women.
I could be wrong of course.

  14. I meant to put 'attempt to walk out' rather than actually succeed in doing so.

  15. Aahh reading this back Tigercheetah, I think you're right. Clearly they are still very much in love and Constance must be struggling with the remnants of her "marriage" to Bonacieux. Something tells me he'll keep making her pay in subtle and not so subtle ways, for her infidelity. D'Artagnan will no doubt torture himself that he can offer her little but himself and that his life as a Musketeer offers her little prospect of wealth and comfort and every prospect of poverty and uncertainty. This coupled with the certain disgrace that would follow her leaving her marriage and she's got a 22 carat dilemma on her hands. She's practical but she's not mercenary, this will give her even more of an agonising choice. I could see them becoming lovers once again as I just don't see them being able to continue to deny their intense feelings for one another. It also gives the writers a chance to do a better job of portraying the passion and devotion and the high stakes of this relationship, than they managed in series one, which was, at times, so fast that it lost the real sense that this was a life changing, once in a lifetime love. One that the protagonists would risk anything for. I just hope this is one aspect of the story that stays out of canon lol!

  16. The fact that D'artagnan could die at any moment as a Musketeer - as far as Constance is concerned - would certainly be part of her dilemma and I hope the producers bring that up at some point.

And yes, after the slight rush job that was D and C in series 1, I hope the writers are taking it more slowly in series 2, it sounds like they might.

  17. Hmmmm, the media seem to be mis-representing Adrain Hodges words regarding series 2's slightly more adult feel as 'SERIES 2 TO BE MORE RAUNCHY, WITH ADDED SEX SCENES AND GRAPHIC VIOLENCE' Er, no, that's not what he said....
Luckily, Jessica has responded by saying that the next series will simply be "more romantic, ambitious and exciting"
Mind you, Ryan Cage did tweet that series 2 is "quite juicy" bless him... :) Presumably, he meant in terms of storylines rather than sex or violence.

  18. It is incredible how easily comments can be spun and misrepresented. There is no indication that they'll turn this into a gore-fest or a soft core shag-a-thon. It's simply going to step up to it's time-slot. Which frankly, it needed to do. Personally, I welcome a more adult tone second time around and let's be honest, who's really going to complain if any of the Musketeers get their kit off and/or if Constance and D'Artagnan are allowed to occasionally get even more frisky that we saw in series one. They're beautiful people and at a time when the audience should be predominantly made up of adults and younger people of an appropriate age, there's no reason why romance and sexuality shouldn't be portrayed in a more intimate way. Indeed if depicted in the right way, it can actually add to the power and intensity of the story and the depiction if the romance. Similarly violence and it's consequences should be shown in a more realistic manner post-watershed. I've always had issues with the type of blood free stylised violence in which the consequences are seldom felt. Arguably it's much more irresponsible to young people to see sanitised killing.

I think the one problem they have with this, is that some parents have already allowed younger children to view the first series and indeed those adults who prefer not to see more graphic material have watched the series and engaged with it. That will make a transition difficult and uncomfortable for some. For those reasons, I would doubt that we'll see too dramatic a change

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, one parent tweeted that she was worried her 12 year old wouldn't be able to watch series 2 after enjoying series 1 but whilst the new series still won't be Game of Thrones, I hope the producers aren't sitting there thinking 'Would we get away with this if a 10 year old was watching?' because post-watershed shows aren't meant to cater to children.

A more deadly Milady, a strong villian in Rochefort and more passion between D'artagnan and Constance would be welcomed by me for sure.

  20. Typical newspaper journalism for you, it continues to amaze me why people believe *anything* they read in the papers, even direct quotes are generally misconstrued and mixed about to mean whatever they choose them to mean!
