Rookie Blue - Heart Breakers, Money Makers - Review

3 Jun 2014

Fight night is back! This week Sam goes back to work, Chloe is out of the hospital and drama ensues. New rookie Duncan was supposed to represent 15th but he chickened out right before the fight upon seeing his opponent. So the next appropriate contender is obviously Nick Collins. I thought it wasn’t a bad idea for him to channel all his feelings into the fight. Work out some tension. But about a minute into the fight I felt really bad for his face. Don’t hit his wonderful face!

Here's to new beginnings.

Sam and Andy shared a short exchange before parade. Something about change and new beginnings. It looks like Sam is genuinely trying to change for the better. The two work on a case together and it actually feels great to see them in a professional setting without all the drama going on because I need a break from all the “will they won’t they” drama these past two weeks. My heart goes out to Nick during the scene where Andy and Sam walked into the venue together while Nick was preparing for round 2. I felt bad for him. I thought seeing Andy with Sam would fuel up some rage in him and help him during the fight, but he lost anyway. It seems that Andy and Nick has closed the final chapter of the McCollins book. I can't help but think Nick used his fight’s loss as a metaphor of their relationship, to which I do not approve. This is not a game and Andy is not a prize! Andy doesn't seems to mind though. I can practically hear McSwarek fans rejoice throughout the episode. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers decided that they’re not done teasing us with the trio yet.

Happy Gail is Happy me

One of the main highlights of the episode was Gail and Dov. They got partnered up for case of the week and it was an absolute delight to see them work together. Not going to lie, they make my PeckStein heart beat a little tonight. Still think it is kind of a shame the writers did not go there with them. I find them well suited for each other. PeckStein was on point this week, they are hilarious together.

Gail Peck has turned into a pile of giggly gooey mess, at least for a while before things went south with Holly. Gail admits to Dov that she is really serious about Holly, which is nice because she’s never talked about Chris or Nick like that. Gail and Holly’s honeymoon period only lasts this long when they’re at the Penny after shift to meet Holly’s friends. Holly’s friend, Dr Boob Job (can’t remember her name) tells Holly that Gail is out of her league and that she is a beat cop. Gail overhears their conversation on her way back from the washroom, sadness washes over her face and walk out of the bar. Holly tries to stop her, but Gail’s walls are up and ready to fire back, throwing a bunch of hurtful words at Holly. To be honest I’ve quite expected Gail to react the way she did, but I think she overreacted. Holly also could have defended Gail more and I want them to work it out because I really like them together. Holly is good for Gail.

Can we just take a moment to talk about Gail handing the cup of drink she spit into to Officer Luck? I love Evil Gail.

I don't know anything about boxing

I enjoyed the continuation of Nick and Chloe’s friendship from last season. I just hope it doesn’t turn into something more because I wouldn’t be able to handle another love triangle on the show. One is enough. Chloe is slowly becoming one of my favourite character on the show. Wouldn’t mind cheerful Chloe being best friends with brooding Nick.

Honourable mention – Duncan did not screw up this week!

Oh and I almost forgot, Chris was the one to put together the whole fight night thing and lost his nerves a bit when things wasn’t going his way. Luckily Chloe was there to stop him before he hurts the delivery man. Maybe he should have been in the fight. Work out all that transgression.

So what did you guys think about Fight Night? Do you think Andy and Nick are done done? And what’s up with Wes? What a shady man. Will Gail and Holly make amends? Let me know your thoughts. See ya’ll next week!

  1. The relationship between Nick and Chloe reminds me of the start of McCollins and it just doesn't feel right. And the end of McCollins? Well, it isn't good. The writers have really disappointed me. They have had such a great story and they don't deserve closure like this. And after seeing the promo for the next episode I stop watching this a I will read only this review.

  2. I think Nick knew that when Andy went to Sams bedside that it was over. How could he stay with her knowing that she was in love with another person. That's why he told her to go. Andy has been straight with Nick about her feelings for Sam. When nick said see you around that was him closing the door to their relationship. I think Andy will still care for nick as she does Luke but Sam is in her heart. So happy to see they are taking the time to really get to know each other on a deeper level. I love them two together, the chemistry is amazing. Now we just have to watch and see where they go to from here.

  4. The writer have not sold me on the Andy/Nick/Sam storyline. The Nick and Andy of last season would have had an honest discussion long ago not these double meaning conversations. Part of what made them so good together was their openness and honesty - it doesn't feel right that they are ending their story so metaphorically instead of honestly.
As for Sam and Andy I thought we were going to see them start to be open and communicating with each other. Where was the conversation after Andy said she needed time at the end of last episode and you can bet there won't be a conversation about how they felt when Sam was looking at Andy while Andy was looking at Nick in the ring.

  5. Gail smiling like that in the car was so weird...lol. Usually she is serious or sarcastic (and I like her this way).
Nick was annoying playing this abandoned little puppy, but I would adopt him. lol
Nice episode, good to see Chloe out of that hospital.
Wes is a pain in the ass, but I think we are not going to have more problems with him...i hope so.
Oh! I cant forget the drink Gail gave to the other cop...lol...do not mess with Gail. lol

  8. Great episode! Loved all the pairings, but Peckstein FTW! Andy and Nick are done, and the metaphor of him getting physically pummeled to seal it seems apt, given that Nick often referred to romances as competitions. He lost, and he'll take his licks and try to heal on both counts. Maybe he'll even get more interesting in the process? Love all his scenes with Chloe, but I don't know what I think about where things seem to be going in the promo where he sticks his nose into things between her and Dov. Then again, I can't spare too much thought for anything other than McSwarek getting back on track. Yay!!!

  9. I agree completely. The Andy/Nick/Sam storyline is really irking me. I have always felt that Andy had depth to her character and this situation was dealt with so quickly - with almost zero feeling towards the people Andy and Sam have dropped. Andy tried to talk with Sam all last season, tried to get back with him... but he was happy with Marlo. Sam wanted NOTHING to do with Andy. And now, where is Marlo? And yes, she has major personal issues but Sam was in a committed relationship with her and now - she is just gone? Doesn't anyone else find that weird? And Andy and Nick had a wonderful relationship, great communication, great chemistry... and then Sam gets shot - and she rushes to his bedside? Actually I get the whole rushing to the bedside thing, because all of her feelings for Sam came flooding back, but that doesn't mean her feelings for Nick would just dissappear. So yea, I agree with you Jessica, the part of Andy and Nick's relationship that was so good, so solid was their openness and honesty - and now they are suppose to be over, and they never received an adequate or truthful ending. I am disappointed.
And, Just to throw it out there... I believe that if Nick would have been the one who got shot - Andy would have ran to him and proclaimed her love. It is a highly emotional situation... and I don't think Sam is Andy's only love.

  10. Andy and Sam aren't perfect, what couple is. Their biggest issue is communication. This season that seems to be changing.

Andy cares for Nick, but she doesn't love him and will never love him the way she does Sam. Sam has her heart, it's been that way from the very first episode. Andy and Nick were great friends, and at the time a distraction she needed.

Sam and Marlo? Please, they were with each other because they didn't have to feel anything. And when Marlo decided she wanted to, unfortunately it made her go off her rocker. A part she played brilliantly at that.

Even in season 4 you could tell Sam and Andy still love each other. They both needed to grow up and learn from past mistakes. Yes, Sam was shot and, as with anyone, it made him rethink his life and he realized he doesn't want to be who he was. Andy also realized that she still truly loves Sam, something she never lost. However, that doesn't mean that she can just go running back to Sam, season 4 would have meant nothing in that case. His sister made her pause which was good, she needed to figure out what she wants. But when you see Andy with Sam, he just makes her smile with very little effort, simply because he has her heart, and always has.

I really liked this episode it really showed us what a great team sam and andy r and I missed that, not like I haven't known all along but this episode with it being SAMs first day back solidifies that mcswareck is back! They had that flirtiness and back and forth banter and the way they smile at each other is contagious! They work so well together and I liked seeing andy take the lead and it really showed how much confidence she has gained as an officer and sam was impressed! I am so over the poor nick thing, he acted like a sore loser in this episode he walked away from andy at the hospital after she told him she still loved sam and didn't even look back and then at fite nite he had the chance to back out of fight and he chose to stay in only when he seen andy walking in with sam, did he want pity from her or to make a point in his speech saying you get in the game you might get hurt and he lost! I kinda see a metaphor in that cuz he knows he lost! Sam and andy have always been great and I'm glad they r taking there time this season with getting them back together it makes sense not to just jump right back in and be a bit cautious this time they wanna get it right and they will! I can't wait to see it unfold, it's been along time coming as they r only truly happy when they r together!

  15. Loved Gail and Epstein in this episode! Their dynamic is enjoyable to watch and quite comical.

I, for one liked the metaphor used between Nick and Andy about their relationship because it implies how Nick knew that getting involved with Andy he might get hurt because he knew she'd still have feelings for Sam, but tried anyway because she was worth it. Very cute of him, I think. Let's hope he can find someone else or Andy wakes up and realizes he's a good guy for her!

  16. I think Andy cares about nick a lot more than she has realized but like nick said season 4 episode 1 Andy doesn't like change I hope Andy realizes nick was the real thing !

  17. I completely agree the writers really let me down as well , they made it a struggle for Andy and nick and they fought and backed each other more than Andy and Sam ever did . Big mistake with the whole boring Sam thing again I was hoping she moved on

Sorry but I cannot agree your comment. Between Andy and Nick there were no chemistry, even while she was with Nick and Sam was with Marlo, the looks were telling us that there is an unfinished business between S and A. For communication yes in the past these two have some problems but in S5 I am watching a grown Sam who is trying to do his best at work and at his personal life and I am grateful to watch McSwarek again. For Nick. Andy was honest while she was talking with him. She told Nick that she ended her speech by telling Sam that she still loves him, Nick asked, ''Do you?'' Andy said (without any hesitation) ''Yes'' and it is over. Andy cares Nick but she did not love him.

  20. I know many of you feel this great love for "McSwarek". And the fact that I can't stand Andy and Sam together has probably clouded my judgement for her feelings for Nick (wishful thinking?)... because she sure dropped him fast and yes, without hesitation, and without feeling...
All I can say is that I will continue to be disappointed with the handling of the Andy and Nick breakup, and I will continue to thoroughly dislike the relationship of McSwarek. :( I am hoping the other characters will get bigger storylines so that I don't have to watch Andy and Sam at all hahahaha!

I guess this is the best way to finalize McCollins. The writers followed a clear way for the breakup. The reason is Andy does not love Nick so ending up the relationship is the best thing to do. Think about that Andy is continuing a relationship with Nick with loving Sam. Will this be fair for Nick?
