Rookie Blue - Going Under - Review

17 Jun 2014

This week we finally get to see Chris for more than 10 seconds. Andy and Sam worked on a case together again and retirement plans might have been brought up.

Yes Chris, you should take the night off.

Chris is heading down a really dark path and it looks like he isn’t going to stop anytime soon. It’s going to be a train wreck if he doesn’t get his shit together. He’s hooked on drugs and unaware that his irrational behaviour and actions are jeopardizing his career. Sometimes cops make the worst decisions. I hope Dov or the other rookies find out about Chris’s after hours activities before he hurt others or himself. I’m intrigued to see bad boy Chris making bad decisions but I would also like to have kind hearted and puppy loving Chris back. I’m torn.

Case of the week – The crew goes undercover to bust an illegal weapons dealer. I like undercover cases, they always keep on the edge of my seat. Chris’s drug dealer happened to be there and it put the whole operation at risk. I forgot how much I like Nick when he’s not caught up in love triangle dramas and catching bad guys. Luckily, they got to close the case even with Chris’s mishaps.

A foot rub during work sounds nice.

Traci and Steve was in charge of case of the week, observing the operation from 15th and the scenes where they were providing commentary when Nick was flirting with the bartender was entertaining. I like how laid back and comfortable they are around each other. I really like their dynamic and I want to see them together outside of work too.

Gail’s currently on an online shopping spree, maybe she thought retail therapy can help her get over what happened last episode. It doesn’t happen very often for Gail and Oliver to share a scene together. But when they do, it’s always great. Oliver sought Gail out to ask what was going on with her and they had a heart to heart at the precinct. It was lovely to see Gail open up to Oliver, because she doesn’t always do it but when she does it’s heart-warming. Oliver is someone Gail looks up to and Gail is like Oliver’s favourite child. It clearly shows when they’re around each other. And I need Holly to come back and make everything better.

Weapons and shoes, kiddo.

I would also like to mention how Chloe is the only that noticed the changes of their fellow officers. She told Dov about Chris’s outburst during fight night and that made Dov increase his awareness around Chris. Chloe also voiced her concerns for Gail to Oliver, which is nice since they never got along.

We only got a glimpse of Duncan this week, which I’m glad. He’s suing Andy and the division for he’s inability to do his job as a cop, so we’ll see how this plays out in the upcoming episodes. Right now he’s got nothing on Andy, but let’s not forget how she left some things out of her reports and that might hinder the investigation. Oliver reassured and told Andy to sit tight and all will blow over but Andy being Andy I have a feeling she’s going to try talking to Duncan, to resolve this face to face.

We're never going to agree on a place to retire.

Because of Duncan’s complaints, Andy couldn’t work on case of the week so Sam let her in on a missing person case he was working on. Unfortunately, missing person turned into dead person. Retirement plans together and buying of condos in Costa Rica was mentioned, McSwarek fans can all agree it was a delight to see the pair happy and making jokes (for now). However, I didn't like how Sam brushed it off with a joke when Andy told him she lied and left things out of the reports. He seemed ok with it and I realized that's just how he is. Sam bend and break rules, whether or not it is for a good cause.

Also, we’re already five episodes into the season, but every week I can’t help but wonder if Frank and Noelle are ever coming back? Is Noelle on a permanent maternity leave or what? I need answers, writers!

Overall I really enjoyed the episode and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen to Chris next. I just want Gail to be happy. Is that too much to ask? Let me know how you guys feel under the comments section!

  1. I agree this was a great episode, the only thing that bothers me is there was no real build up to the chris plot. I think they could of foreshadowed better in the past 4 eps that something was going on with him. It sort of felt like his drug adduction came out of nowhere, but now that it's started it's intresting and I can't wait to see where it goes...just the start up was weak in my opinon.

  2. I feel like the writers have finally found a decent storyline for Chris. Like you, I feel so confused about enjoying this dark side of him but wanting old fluffy Chris again. I do likw Holly as a character but I've always thought Chris and Gail made a great pair! She as the heartless badass and he as the loving, softer one. They complemented each other in so many ways.

Traci and Steve are super cute, but like you I wish we had some interaction outside work. Also would be great to see more of Steve dealing with Traci's possible custody battle over Leo. That was a storyline that went missing.

My McSwarek hearts melts when I watch scenes like this. I love the sexual tension between them, the glances, the banter, the flirting. Ben and Missy are so good at it. I can't wait to see whats in store for them.

  3. Great Review!! The whole downward spiral that Chris is on, crazy. I do realize that his spiratic behavior is caused from the drugs - but I am confused how a cop would allow himself to go there at all, I mean obviously he knows the risks. I was shocked at his duplicity...To trash the drugs and switch it to baking soda? Obviously he was just saving his own ass, but wow, I didn't think Chris had it in him. And trying to think back, wasn't Dov's brother involved in drugs? before he commit suicide? So I am thinking that Dov is going to clue-in to Chris' drug abuse very soon.
Gail and Oliver were both amazing, and always are. I have been really missing Oliver on the streets so it was great to see some personal interaction between him and Gail.
Chloe started off as this really annoying person (for me) - but seriously, the girl has really turned into a wonderful, insightful, clever and funny addition to the show. I love that she reads people so well and even though her and Gail haven't always gelled... she knew that Gail needed help.
Your review was a bit short on Nick, cause the guy is awesome!! So dang smooth and sexy - and single handedly breaks the case. I laughed when the girl that he was flirting with, turned into the gun dealer... and Nick just took it in stride. Still think Andy made a mistake letting Nick go.

I guess writers made a right choice by taking Nick outside the triangle. This is better to watch him other than someones (Gail, Andy) boyfriend. Finally (in his third season) he will have a story.

  5. About Chris: I still have the feeling, that there might be more going on. I don't get how the Season 4 finale, can make him do drugs. Being a manslut, I get it, but drugs?
Or it's more wishful thinking, I can't imagine a Cop replacing evidence, to get a drug dealer free and not getting fired.

I'm very sad, that one of Andy's best Storylines has dissapeard with Selfie. Maybe they can give her a new rookie? I really enjoyed Andy teaching.

What was the best about this episode for me, was Traci and Steve, I want to see more of them. And of course, Oliver and Gail. I hope Gail goes back to being happy with Holly. I really wanted to hug her in this episode. :(

She did the right thing letting nick go as she still loves sam and why bother to drag it out with nick and hurt him more, she would have went back to sam even if she tried to go o. With nick cuz sam and andy belong together!

I agree I love mcswareck! I not only missed them as a couple last season but missed them working together as well! And I like how sam is willing to let her lead now and help him and he doesn't try to push her to talk! Can't wait for next week

  8. I loved this episode but yes I agree about Chris, there was no proper build up to him turning to drugs. It does seem out of the blue but I am interested to see what direction this storyline is heading, I don't want Chris to lose his career over this but at the same time his addiction is starting to affect his work and colleagues.

I loved Oliver in this episode, first with the way he advised Andy to lay low and assured her Duncan had no case against her then his scenes with Gail. I feel so bad for Gail, it is rare to see her affected like this and I'm glad Oliver was there to talk and comfort her.

I still have a weakness for Andy and Sam, there is just something about them that just clicks but the promo for next week got me mad. Its like oh no here we go again but hopefully it is a wake up call for Sam, he seriously cannot keep making the same mistakes if he stands a chance with Andy. I don't doubt Sam's love for Andy at all but he needs to wise up.

  9. Yes, I always liked Chris and Gail too! It's a pity they didn't work out but I really love Holly. McSwarek did good this week, can't lie. Next week is gonna be intense

  10. Thank you :) Sorry about Nick, will try to include more of him when he's got a decent storyline. But I agree he was really cool during undercover which is nice because it reminds people how awesome he can be!

  11. Yes I agree about the build up. Maybe he'll explain why he's taking drugs when someone finds out. That's the only reason I can think of without making this about bad writing.

  12. I was so caught up with the whole love triangle thing I forgot how great of a character he is. I hope this season Nick will have an interesting storyline

  13. I really do not like Andy and Sam together... at all. It's like Andy enjoys banging her head against the wall repeatedly... because Sam hasn't changed. After how many seasons, and now he is just going to get over his commitment issues? The storyline is getting OLD. And in the slight chance he has changed, why would she go back to him, he can only have so many chances. And yea, if she doesn't love Nick - obviously she shouldn't be with him. What I don't get is why anyone in their right minds would pick a commitment-phobe who has tossed you aside repeatedly... over a warm, generous, sweet, commitment ready guy?? But whatever. I think I have said it before, I think you and I will have to agree to disagree regarding Nick-Andy-Sam.

  14. I too love the connection of McSwareck, and should the writers ever go in another direction, I might have to stop watching a show I love right now.

  15. I agree the relationship Sam and Andy is kind of the heart of the show for me, too. I wasn't so fond of season 3 and 4, I liked the lightness this show had in its first seasons..that was what made it different to other cop shows. Andy is a talker, Sam isn't, that does not mean he is not ready to commit. I always thought he was more committed to Andy than she was to him, but Andy needs to give him time to express himself.

Every scene with Oliver is just brilliant, he is the best. I liked Frank too, sad that he had to go just to promote Oliver. Nick needs his own story line .. and I have admit I still can not stand Chloe no matter how hard I try, even tough she was quite funny this episode.
