Reckless - Pilot - Advance Preview

Reckless is a sultry legal drama set in Charleston, SC starring Anna Wood and Cam Gigandet as attorneys with a strong sexual pull toward one another finding themselves on opposite sides of a sex scandal.

Jamie Sawyer (Anna Wood) is the defense attorney in the case of the week trial involving a man who has been accused of murder. She comes across as smart and sassy and more than capable of holding her own against any man. She’s not above bending the rules if it suits her purpose and helps her clients.

Roy Rayder (Cam Gigandet), is ADA and prosecuting attorney in the weekly case. He’s a soon-to-be divorced father of two with a strong moral code. He is approached by his father-in-law and his friends to consider becoming the next City Attorney. Roy has some misgivings considering his father held the same job and recalls that it doesn’t pay a lot. He agrees as long as his father-in-law will make him a full partner in his law firm.

Jaime and Roy share a mutual attraction for one another that comes out in by playful bantering and flirting. Underneath the sexual tension, they also share a mutual respect for one another even though they often find themselves at odds in the courtroom. Another complication is Jamie’s detective friend who is a little more than her friend with benefits.

The lead detective in the murder trial is Terry McCandless who is an arrogant “good old boy.” He has been carrying on a consensual affair with a fellow officer, Lee Anne Marcus. Terry often uses his position of authority as a police officer to his advantage. Lee Anne is let go from the police department when photos of her are sent around the department. Lee Anne sues the city of Charleston and the police department and retains Jamie as her attorney. This pits Jamie against the newly appointed city attorney, Roy.

The case against the police department is a set up to be a season long arc. At first it seems like it is a cut and dry case. Soon it is evident that there are some twists that uncover more secrets that are bound to shake things up and keep it interesting.

I really enjoyed the pilot for what it was which a soapy legal drama. Nothing is really original or fresh, but it was still enjoyable and fun. I especially enjoyed the flirty banter between Jamie and Roy. I found both of the extremely likable as individual characters. I appreciated that Jamie was smart and not just a ditzy female attorney who looks good in a suit. I especially liked Roy. He is a typical southern gentleman. He wants to do what is right which I’m sure is going to cause him some problems as the season goes on. He also is a devoted father who doesn’t get to see his daughters as much as he would like since his wife left him because she wanted someone with more money. There is the obvious triangle set up, which it seems no show can escape these days, between Roy, Jamie, and Jamie’s detective boyfriend. Although there is a twist which should keep this interesting as long as it doesn’t drag out too long. I found the “villains” to be sufficiently skeevy enough that I want to see them taken down a peg or two. Although I’m left with some questions regarding the actual facts of the sex scandal and am looking forward to seeing if there are more twists and turns coming.

In all, I found Reckless to be an enjoyable and fun hour spent. There was enough there that made me want to continue watching to see what will happen next. It is a great way to spend a summer evening. It isn’t a heavy drama, but it the weekly cases and the longer sex scandal case make things interesting enough that it isn’t too light and fluffy.

Thanks for the nice review, Tracie. I was curious to see if this show was going to just be all steam or actually have an interesting plot. I'm glad to know you liked it.
