    I thought the action was great and it had better action scenes then most movies today. Loved the giants and thought it was awesome how Jon took out that guy with the hammer.

    That was bare none the best battle I have seen on a TV series.... and it last half the episode!
    Amazing to think that this was only Mance testing defenses and not the bulk of his army....

    One thing did annoy me though...
    I loathe when TPTB go close up and silent for what they want to be an emotional scene in the middle of absolute chaos all around. It is cliche, unrealistic and just silly when looked at through the lens of the bigger picture. It should never be done. Period.
    *End rant*

    - It was really nice to see Jon Snow come of age...
    They have short-changed his story thus far in the series, but we finally got to see him show that he is a leader of men, destined for something bigger than just a grunt on the Wall.
    - I loved Jon having Sam let Ghost out to do damage!
    I loved the irony of the Thenns wanting to eat the Night's Watch brothers only to end up eaten by Ghost! XD
    - I loved Alliser Thorne giving what was basically an apology to Jon Snow and trying to make it a lesson at hte same time. IT was both dutiful and a bit smug. In otherwords absolutely in Character! XD
    - I have been wondering for months now if Grenn was going to take the place of Donal Noye from the books and sacrifice himself to hold the gate... Sadly he did. Seeing him pull together the handful of men certain to be killed was a nice moment though
    - I was uncertain what the fates of Thorne and Tormund would be, but I was happy to see them manage to live through the carnage.It sets up the possibility that certain future events will play out more like the books. Which is usually a good thing to me.
    - I loved the defenses on the Wall!

    Even if this was the best Wall material of the series and I liked most of the episode compared to previous "Episode 9's" it was just not as powerful to me..

    Ok, that said...
    It was a great action-filled episode in its own right and I know some of the more powerful moments were saved for the finale!

    Damn the Seven for malign me wait seven days!

    Great action and fight scenes...........some of the best of the season/series, if not the best on TV in as long as I can remember! RIP Ygritte, Pip, Grenn, and Styr "Magnar of Thenn" ( yes I know he was a cannibal, but I liked him anyway.................he had "swagger and attitude"! 4 THE NIGHTWATCH AND THE WATCHERS ON THE WALL, I am Nobody!!!

    I knew this episode was going to be different and boy, was it not? I did enjoy it however. The battle were epic. I wished it lasted 10 hours but there's also part 2.

    I am also glad, Janos Slynt survived. I was really afraid for a moment he would die. That coward deserves a proper ending. The Stark way..

    Two things (I can think of right now) I didn't like. Tormund being captured and Jon heading off murder Mance. That's a dishonorable thing to do, something he would never do. Sure he was sent to kill him as well in the books by Thorne and Slynt when they arrived after the battle, but he most likely wouldn't have gone through with it.

    Anyway, great episode. God I love almost everything that's happening in the North. Most exciting part of the story.

    I loved it and it was definitely the best battle scene in a TV series ever. However I think they should have had at least five minutes of another storyline. But whatever. Cannot freakin wait until the finale, although I'm super sad there aren't gonna be any more eps for a year.

    Love the actions scenes love Jon's friends chanting their oath while protecting the gate against the giant love seeing Jon Snow coming of age and showing he more than who he think he is love Alliser Throne apoglize to Jon Snow even though she was trying teach a lesson so in character over all good episode

    great ep with excellent battle scenes and sad to see some of John's core brothers pay the cost for holding the Wall (for now) nice to see Ghost unleashed to get some carnage of his own. I did like the belated apology/teaching moment between Thorne and John - you just know that Slynt will try to take over but will get what's coming to him... the only thing that took away from the ep for me was there was a bit too much Sam stuff as I would've liked to have gotten more of the wall defense preparation perhaps with the now fallen Grenn and Pip...

    I was surprised how much of it was saved for the finale though. The end of third book was so eventful and the one episode has to catch us upto that point. Tyrion, Jon, Arya and in for the show, Bran all have so much stuff left. No wonder the finale will be the longest GoT episode yet running 66 minutes!

    -I knew they'd devote most of the episode to the Nights Watch and I was thrilled they devoted the entire episode to it. A very LotR Two Towers feel to the episodes. -Well Jon Snow and Sam Tarley seem to officially reached places 1 and 2 as most honorable people in GoT.
    -I seem to have missed it, the current commander is dead and Jon Snow is de facto in charge, right?
    -The wuss on the wall is the guy Tyrion banished, right?
    -Prediction for next week: The synopsis says someone assists the Wall... the only army nearby seems to be Bolton, so I'm guessing Roose Bolton rides to the rescue as part of his efforts to destroy the last of the Starks.

    Jon did say something like there's nobody left to give order, even though Alliser Thorne is acting Lord Commander of the night's watch. There should be an election in the near future.

    Yes. The same guy who betrayed Ned Stark, and then banished by Tyrion. And you will be surprised as to come to assist the Wall. There were clues in the previous episodes. Even in the last episode of the last season IIRC.

    I mean we are accustomed to seeing giants with huge clubs/ tree trunks orsomething crude, but I don't think I have ever seen a giant with a bow!


    That was like a lance for an arrow being launched from a hand held ballista!

    I was happy Slynt and Thorne lived too!
    I still wonder if they will use them in the upcoming Lord Commander election in place of Bowen Marsh, Cotter Pyke and Denys Mallister. They did intro Othell Yarwick the other episode Iguess... Maybe we will get more elder Night's Watch next year....

    I guess I took Jon going to kill Mance as less a stealth assassination attempt (villainous) and more the only option he saw for saving the NW and everyone beyond the wall. An act of self-sacrifice (heroic) for the greater good (heroic), which I think is very much in Jon's character.

    Mostly though, I took it as a way to cut some story.... a time saver. So many of the arcs need to be trimmed back to fit in the 10-episode format. We usually end up at the same or similar place... sometimes by similar events taking place in different part of the story than the books. That diversion can lead to changes in characters, but I think it usually makes sense within the series as it's written


    It's frustrating though isn't it? XD
    It's odd too since the book characters who have longer arcs often get their stories on the TV series trimmed back so the characters with far less in the books can be expanded. It means we readers lose many parts of the books we like or wanted to see on screen. It's sad we lose so much of the nuance, detail and subplots, but it is just an inevitability honestly.

    That's an interesting view. Didn't think of it because I just, when it comes Jon, like some continuity and consistency (even though I kinda don't care about Tv Jon as much as his book counterpart. Actually, Tyrion is my favorite character from the show) for what I think are defining moments/character traits. A heroic self-sacrifice does work well for me as an explanation, as it is like you said, very much consistent with his character.

    Honestly, I thought Thorne was gonna replace Donal Noye, and I am glad that wasn't the case. Kinda hate the dude, much better to have him stick around, even though there aren't many stuff for him left to do. Haven't paid much attention to the people you mentioned. Almost everyone at the wall seems so generic with no purpose. The election should be interesting though with the bit they added about Janos though. He's also a known/proven coward in addition to the long list with his credentials.

    I would've liked to see more stuff from the NW (things are about to get particularly interesting and heated there, and it is anyway my favorite aspect of the story), but I am not sure if next season is going to be as balanced as this one, or they'll go exclusively with the story from the feast.

    It just depends on what everyone personally prefers to see, and what they won't miss from the stuff they decide to exclude/cut. Some bits I don't mind, others make me furious. Details and background information add more diversity and better understanding. It's not an easy task for the shows writers what they decide in the end, that's for sure. Frustrating and inevitable as it already is, now we're facing another possibility. The show surpassing the books and making a new course for for itself. Really differentiate itself and spoiling everything in the process.

    I loved this episode, I didn't see most of my favourite characters but this episode was like a movie. It had little touching scenes, a lot of battle, high body count, giants, bravery, fear and so on.

    Awesome episode!! I loved it! Even if it was only the wall's storyline I really enjoyed every minute of it, except Ygritte's death, as a book reader I knew it was coming and I was waiting for it. When she took that arrow, I yelled "That's for Pyp, you b*tch!!". But the last words and the slow-mo was too much and so immersion breaking in the middle of so much chaos!
    I loved seeing Jon give orders on the wall or fight in the courtyard! He was so badass!! GO JON GO!!
    All the episode was almost LOTR worthy, the fights were so well done and I loved the wall's defences (The Scythe was epic!!).
    And I cried when Grenn recited his vows to give himself and the others courage to held the gate, and the others started recite them too while the giant is charging!
    One of the first episode of Game of Thrones I know I will watch again!

    He is a fun character!

    One of the few who does not rush to violence.

    His interest in history and the origins of the Night's Watch connects with me also. I think in the books more so than in the TV series, we are seeing history plays such an important role in the larger narrative! At times it almost feels like it is repeating itself with the Great Bastards now being mirrored by the various figures. One true Targaryen and who knows how many Targ bastards! XD

    I knew Ygritte's death was coming, but the show did it justice. I just wish we would have seen a little bit more of Mance earlier in the season to flesh some of the wilding stuff out a bit more...


    Love Aemon's mentioning of the past to Sam (Oh, I wish we would get a Dunk and the Egg mini series)


    The Mammoth was pretty awesome too! Really neat cinematography going through Castle Black!


    Looking forward to the finale too, especially since the title may suggest getting into some of my favorite parts of the mythology so far!

    Oh, I always like those moments, even if they are unrealistic (because obviously there's no time in war), but I do think sometimes people do have those 'outside of time' experiences, where, for a split second (even though its longer on screen), nothing else matters but that moment. And I think if any series can get away with something like that, it's a fantasy series with a magical/metaphysical backbone! :P


    At least the fact that they were staring at each other did make for a realistic ending on Ygritte's behalf. If she would have been paying attention, she might have lived through it, became a prisoner instead...

    I think the look between the two as Ygritte nocked her arrow was awesome, but it went downhill from there very fast!


    Tthe silence so they could share their intimate moment was bad, but the worst bit was the slow-motion!! It ruined everything for me. Even D&D admit slow-motion is self-conscience and cheesy in this week's supplemental videos! XD

    Both scenes were heavy-handed and them trying to force the love story instead of letting it play out organically within the story. IMO

    I've never read the book but I know of some book event and Am I wrong that I was waiting for Stannis to show up with his army? What was the point of that scene in the previous season when he got the message from the wall that the enemy is coming? Did I remember somthing wrong or they made the story totally different?

    There is a difference between knowing Mance's army is coming and knowing exactly when they are coming. So when the assault begins I can understand some level of surprise no matter which direction the attack comes from.

    However I disagree they were not prepared...
    They already had placed the dummy brothers on the Wall holding torches. When the horns blew they lit those torches. A lot of what they did was prep work that needs to be done in the last minute. Placing arrows in oil etc... And of course 100 brothers simply cannot be everywhere at once.

    Honestly though, when the Wall is designed to be manned by thousands, 100 or so men just cannot do everything fast enough.

    Jon kept trying to tell them how imminent this threat was and I do think they did prepare, but just not the way Jon wanted to. I agree that Alliser Thorne/The Lord Commander appeared like he was a little bit surprised (and I think he's been rubbishing Jon Snow's claims/advice all along) and even gave a pseudo apology to Jon before he went down to fight!


    I think Gilly really didn't know enough, and considering that they were almost right behind her, she really didn't have a lot of time to spit it out!

    Kind of disappointed with the episode. The fight sequences were epic but some of the other scenes were slow and tedious. Not a fan of devoting the entire episode to the Wall either. I guess because all my favourite characters are elsewhere I resented the screen time that the Night's Watch got. Hope it's completely absent in the finale to make up for this.

    There appears to be some interaction between Mance's army and the NW in the promo so there will be something... Maybe not a full on assault though...


    I think they have to show the true size of Mance's army somehow.... Somehow they make sense of Stannis arriving. If the bulk of Mance's army does not attack I'm not sure there would be a true need for him to be at the Wall.


    They could do an end around and have Jon and Mance's meeting somehow end the war, but I think it would leave a hollow feeling in many people. It would in me.

    Ok, but I'm talking about the preperation to defend Castle Black from the South. In my opinion, there were too many men on the Wall, especially considering the height of the Wall and the fact that they had quite effective weapons. As a result, manpower didn't really play the essential role there in contrast to the battle in the castle. The threat from the South was simply much greater than from the North.

    There be giants knocking down our door!.... Fire arrows soaring,swords swinging and barrels crashing thousands of feet below made for one eventful 9th episode. That being said i didn't find it as good as some others did.

    If only they had listened to Jon Snow none of this would have happened,at least not to this extent.

    I felt for Jon but nothing for Ygritte when she died,i wonder why?

    Loved the scene between Sam and Jon,the Nights watch,sex, love,and really how sweet was it when he finally kissed Gilly! About time!

    It was a great episode. I love Jon´s POV in the books and the character has always felt a bit off to me on the show. But this season he feels more like "book Jon" and this episode was a good example of that.

    I was sad to see Ygritte die, even though I knew it was coming.

    A little more Ghost and a little more Mance would have been good. Hope to get some good Mance scenes next week.

    But most of all.....can´t wait to see Tyrions story next week!!!!!!

    Couldn't agree more. I liked Jon from the get go, but not as much as I did after I read the books. Still, I maintain my original view and that's why he comes second in the list of my favorite characters, as opposed to the books in which he is by far my favorite. There's something off about him on the show. Whether is his portrayal or the awesome bits about him from the books that are missing. This season have been a lot better, though still the show hasn't managed to capture his awesomeness. And now they took away the interactions he was going to have with Tormund as well.

    Mance should have more screen time. He is the King-Beyond-The-Wall, for god's sake. He should be a very intriguing and interesting character.

    Tyrion's story is what I am looking forward the most in next week's episode. Normally I would be worried, but with PD's acting I am sure it's going to be explosive. History will be made.

    I did not know you were worried about next season's material. D&D stated quite a while ago they would combine the books into one mass source of material. I agree though... much better idea than splitting it how GRRM did in his books!


    I do wonder about how much of the IRon Islands stuff will make it into the series. I was always more of a Dorne fan, but the Ironborn chapters do have some moments that would make great TV!


    Daario capturing 93 ships - the same number of ships Victarion had in his fleet in the books - makes me wonder if they will use Daario to replace the Greyjoys somehow. I do not but into the new bearded Daario looking like Euron's book description meaning anything, but to finish the TV series in possibly 7 years (8 maximum) they will need to cut a lot.


    The Ironborn chapters seem more likely to be cut to me than the Dornish chapters, but who knows! Here's hoping we get a Kingsmoot!

    I didn't catch it :D... I knew it would be crazy a whole season without any of the 3 main characters, but wasn't sure about it. As much I enjoyed the chapters in Riverlands and reading about Cersei screwing up, I thought it would be a mistake going that way. The merge will be interesting and there will be many changes, but there's no other way really.

    I wouldn't mind if the iron islands story is cut all together to be honest (doesn't really excite me what happens there ( kinda hate the damn pirates lol. though Euron must be an interesting character), but I reckon we'll see some of it, at least. It's been pushed back already with Balon and all. Dorne, on the other hand, that I want to see. Especially Doran even for just a couple episodes.

    8 seasons sound like a proper number to finish it properly. Like you said lots of stuff will need to be cut. And the two last books will be as big, if not bigger, as the dance. As long those cuts don't involve the North, I am good with it xD.

    If you do a re-read of the books some day, here is a nice article that combines the two books into a basic chronological order to be read as one huge book.


    If you read them together in this way there is a lot of fun thematic parallels between characters.


    Euron would be interesting!
    By far he is my favorite greyjoy. Honestly though, how important are the Greyjoys really? Vic brings ships to Dany (not needed on the series since Daario captured a fleet) and Euron maybe had the Drgaon Horn if that comes into play. Not much else.


    Dorne is so much more involved in things.
    They're involved in the very origin of the saga, two possible marriages to important characters, Sand Snakes involved in key plots across the Seven Kingdoms, and we cannot forget... Dorne was the only region never conquered by Targaryen dragons!


    Far more important than the Ironborn!

    I am aware they both happen simultaneously, even though sometimes I forget it because of how confusing that is..

    Lawless savages that think everyone is green and coward, while in truth they are the ones who will bend the knee when it suits them, rather than go down properly according to their ways. Balon's rebellion proved that, and them like some warlord decided to claim the North for himself when the North was fighting a war in the Riverlands/South. I like the idea of them being pirates, but their complete lack of honor and arrogance puts me off. I see them as a side-story to the side-story lol. I am quite intrigued by Euron however dark he is. Victarion, he is a dumb brute and if he thinks Dany as some wench to steal and carry away, there should be a nice surprise for him waiting.

    Dorne is awesome, now that Doran has started actually playing the game. He was too cautious and passive at first.. His original plan was no less than suicide (even considering the history of Dorne. The war would be fought elsewhere). Dorne and whatever army Viserys had managed to gather wouldn't be nearly enough against the 7 Kingdoms united. Might as well gone to war when Oberyn urged him. Now though, he's more involved and with a plan more complicated and potentially more rewarding.

    It´s hard to say exactly what it is that makes Jon in the series less interesting. Well, for me personally, I love Jon and Ghosts connection in the books. Ghost is sooo much a part of Jon story (for me just as much as Summer is a part of Bran), and the series never showed their connection. It always bothered me.
    A few nice scenes are also missing from his story and the portayal is maybe a little dull. Jon is amongst my top 4 in the books, but sadly not on the show.

    Agree on Mance.....we want more!! A lot more!!! He is a great character and the series have yet to show that.

    I´m guessing that we will get both the Dornish and the Ironborn chapters (Am I being naive?) . Theon is a big part of the show, therefor it would be easier for people to understand the Ironborn Chapters. I´m not a big fan of them, but it would be a shame if they were totally cut out. Also I think it is very possible to make a shorter version than the one in the books.

    We already know that we are getting some Sand Snakes. Dorne has a lot of fans, so they will not cut them out. It is also ok with me if they make their story a little shorter though. People who didn´t read the books quickly fell in love with Oberyn, I´m sure the rest of Dorne will get the same reaction. (not sure the Ironborn will meet the same kind of love)

    I would love to see both the Ironborn and Dorne (I WANT IT ALL!), but I agree with you - they can´t cut any more scenes from the North! I love these next many chapters in the North.

    Look forward to Cersei´s downfall aswell though. Joffrey got what he deserved, now let´s see Cersei suffer. :-)

    I agree. The scenes with Ghost aren't nearly enough. Their special bond, which comes from Jon being a warg, hasn't been underlined enough. That was supposed to happen with the halfhand beyond the wall. I am not even sure if it's been noted that Jon has those abilities, or that anyone cares/remembers about it. Ghost is huge part of Jon's character and personality with him later accepting being somewhat different than most people.

    I wanna say that maybe the character wasn't cast right. That might be a little harsh, so I'll just say the way they have the actor portray Jon Snow, isn't as it should be. They all add up together. Everything we both mentioned are important aspects of his character and what makes the character so awesome in the books.

    oh, and you better enjoy seeing Varys in the next episode, cause we both know this will be the last we see of him for a long time xD.

    From the rumors coming out of production Jaime and/ or Bronn will be going to Dorne...Other rumors are that one of them (someone who is a regular on the show at least) could be fighting Obarra as well.

    I'm guessing to deliver Oberyn's bones maybe? If that is the case, we will not get Arys Oakheart or his affair with Arriane. I wonder if we will get the "Queenmaker" plot as well since we have no news of Darkstar, Arianne or her friends...I still think Arianne may be cast though.

    Not that I prefer that over the book version.... but that would shorten it some.I likedboth arcs so I will miss them if they do not make the TV series.

    They cut Sarella (at least in name) so maybe we will not get as much time spent in Oldtown.

    No! Don't say that! The Oakheart bits are one of my favorite parts! We have seen so little of the Kingsgaurd characters. I need him! :P

    All the Dorne changes have thrown me honestly! A regular already on the series is rumored to fight Obarra. So Jaime or Bronn maybe? If so maybe Bronn will be killed by Obarra... or vice versa. Either way Ugh!


    Maybe Meryn Trant will go along and get killed, I could enjoy that! XD

    Well it could be interesting if they are saving the warg part to match another character's from Winds of Winter...I do wish though we would of seen more Jon, especially this season (and Mance too), but I think they can potentially make up for it with some of the other events ahead. I could see why the show may hold of on some things so not to take some things away from Bran's story. I still like Jon Snow and even KH's portrayal of him, just I think some of the material is cut (as you both have said) that makes his character a bit more interesting...

    I don't know man, I don't know. I get it that not everyone likes the same things. I still don't understand though how could anyone vote awful for such an awesome episode. Perhaps they'll come around next season. Things are about to get even more interesting. I mean, they are 3 Kings present at the wall, bunch of wildlings and the red priestess. Already loving it.
