Boardwalk Empire - Season 5 - Will Jump Ahead 7 Years

Thanks to Pascal219 for the heads up.
While talking to Michael K. Williams during a press day for The Purge: Anarchy (which we will have a full interview for closer to that movie’s release), the subject of the final season of Boardwalk Empire inevitably came up, and Williams told me something very, very interesting— Boardwalk Empire Season 5 is going to have a seven-year time jump to 1931.

“The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now,” Williams said when asked about what we can expect from Season 5. “The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.”

  1. WTF? I'm assuming that Eli's son will take care of the business once Lucky dies. This is purely speculation on my part.

  2. NUCKY, my brother. NOT Lucky. Is this going to be in the season premiere? I'm curious

  3. I'm a little surprised since that jumps right past Al Capone's Valentine's Day Massacre, but but both Capone and Enoch Jonson had big tac evasion issues and arrests in 1931 I think. So I'm thinking we will see a lot of the government against the gangsters next year!

  4. That means they will be killing Joe Masseria off early and having Lucky Luciano rise to power BUT what about Rothstein? He died in 1928, how are they going to address that? He is to big of a character in the show gloss over his death.

  6. Maybe is flashfoward I don't know, but I think this idea surprise me.

  7. Interesting decision but I guess at least we get to see what happens to these characters since they decided to only do 5 seasons (which still saddens me)

  8. Doesn't surprise me at all. Once I found out this season would be the last, I knew they'd have to time jump to not only finish out Nucky's story but set up many of the real life gangsters, such as Capone, Lucky, etc. I hope we get to see something of Murder Inc., though.

  9. "depression" I think is also a theme and it kind of brings Nucky's life more full circle, as I read there are to be childhood flashback(s) too! But it is interesting that shoot past some iconic historical points, but I'll be interested if we see a Hearst character, or if that was somewhat the retooling of season 3 plots??? It will also be interesting to see if we stay in 1931, since there is more and more to tell, bomething tells me though this is where we might see the most fictionalized aspects of the series yet...

  10. Ya, but 1931 is kind of a strange time, because Johnson really has things going on all into the 1930's (arrests and trials) up until he's sentenced for ten yrs in 1941...but of course this is a fictionalized version and so they could end things rather differently unless we will continue to jump through time through out the season...

  11. It will be weird considering they also had Margret start to get close to him too. I guess in theory she could be the window into his death, but in all honesty, I always thought the series was asking, "who is Enoch "Nucky" Thomson"?, more than it was about watching actual history unfold, so I think very few of those things really matter, except that they reflect and inform that question...

  12. I expected a big time jump too, but more on the order of how The Tudors or Vikings worked where an episode may be a certain period in time, then the next episode may jump months or a year ahead to the next significant period in time, and so on.

I know the show really has not done that, but I thought it would work nicely...

  13. I always figured that the series would end with the repeal of prohibition (1933) but that's two years out from where this season picks up. That being the case, I don't think it's out of the question to see some additional time-jumping within the final season.
