Beauty and the Beast – Beast is the New Black – Review: "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Welcome back Beasties! Did you miss me? I missed you.

Before I get underway with this week’s review I would like to say that I’m super proud of each and every Beastie who roared long and hard to help get BATB renewed for season 3. Beasties come together when it counts and this is honestly one of the most passionate and dedicated fandoms I have ever seen and I’m always going to be proud to be a part of this fanmily.

I feel like the renewal has given me a new outlook on Beauty and the Beast. Especially since I can gather what the end game for season 2 is and what they are planning for season 3 and they all appear to be things that I can be happy about and get behind wholeheartedly. I truly hope the feeling is mutual for the fans that have stuck around this long through so many of the ups and downs. I think they are planning on rewarding us for our loyalty by getting back to the basic tenants of the show.

There was so much that happened and a lot to process. So let’s see… Where should I begin?

Cat was running around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to save Vincent and in the process lost her badge and made a few people think she was an escaped patient from some mental hospital in the process. She got to flex her lawyer skills, have some girl time with Tess, comfort JT and still managed time to have to be shoved into quite a few forced, long, drawn out and unnecessary scenes with Gabe. Heck, she even stopped by to check in on her dear old dad. And let’s not forget she was handcuffed by Vincent, for like the 4th time (I mean if that’s their kink no judgments here just show some of that in bedroom already). Oh and of course let’s not forget that the writers came down with a case of Lana Lang syndrome by having Cat be kidnapped by the bad guys. Let’s just hope she manages to stay out of the hospital for these next five episodes or I might have a few choice words about that.

Gabe wasn't behind Vincent being arrested! Really? Are you sure writers? I mean sure it’s always great to see Ted Whittall again being the bad bio dad we all love to hate and as much as I love Sendhil I just don't see the point of keeping the character of Gabe around. One of the cardinal rules of writing is a character should serve the plot, the plot should haven’t to serve the character. For the life of me I can't understand why the writers keep trying to remind us of a plot that was nearly universally hated by the fans. They should be trying to gloss that over and phasing the character out or down playing his screen time for the time being. He’s pretty useless and one note at this point which is a shame because Mr. Ramamurthy can play evil in a wonderfully delicious manner. But the character of Gabe seems so neutered and lovelorn that I’m getting secondhand embarrassment for him at this point. For me personally, the character of Gabe can never be truly be redeemed for me no matter what the writers try to force down my throat. Gabe comes across as selfish, petty and arrogant. Those traits by the way are the prime ingredients for a villain, just saying. I truly hope they build on the evil smirk while drinking a glass of wine thing because I just can’t take the jealous puppy dog routine any longer.

OK, let’s just get this out of the way. You know it was coming and be honest, you know you love it when I say this, criminal underuse of Austin Basis as JT Forbes. But at least he was in the episode and clocking some pretty good screen time, well for season 2 at any rate. It absolutely broke my heart that Vincent wasn't able to say a proper goodbye to him. But JT knew in his heart that the day would come eventually. At least now he has Cat AND Tess to help him through this rough time. I’m really happy that JT got a little bit agro in this episode and all of his points were valid. It is nice to know that JT has a back bone underneath all that good guy armor. I have feeling this might come in handy over the course of the next five episodes as well going into season 3.

I loved everything about Tess in this episode. Tess was written a little more in character than she had been in quite some time. Tess is a good friend, fight me about it, I dare you! I was absolutely smitten with her concern for Cat and JT and how she was clumsily handling her inability to really help. Even Tess’s make up was well done and I guess the lighting guys who use to have a grudge against Nina finally let bygones be bygones because it wasn’t very often that the character of Tess had good lighting in any scene but this episode was one gorgeous shot after the next of Tess. It might also help they've been filming in the daytime and outdoors more, LOL! Tess’s dialog may not have been that great but Nina really sold the character’s social awkwardness that comes from always trying to be tough and being a tad bit rough around the edges. I absolutely can’t wait to see what sides her relationship with JT brings out in her.

I know we saw an awful lot of Vincent but I felt like he really didn’t have a lot to do in this episode per se. He got arrested. He was strip searched by Officer Miller (in a scene that didn’t last long enough or show nearly enough). Cat came to his rescue to keep him calm and discover the gem’s hiding place. He had a pretty cool scene with JT when he realized that his friends were willing to take huge risks to save him and decided he wanted to spare them. I really liked that scene especially since he acknowledged that he was guilty of the crime. That scene really felt like old Vincent from season 1 and it hit me hard because I’ve missed that Vincent very much especially the vulnerability that Jay Ryan gave in that iteration of Vincent.

What else? In another scene that made me tear eyed (there were quite a few, to be honest) Vincent has a heart to heart with Cat but much to my surprise and Vincent chagrin Cat chose a heck of a time to find her backbone and told him she was going to save him. That didn’t sit well with Vincent so naturally he started a fight with an inmate to facilitate his escape. Just when it seemed as if Vincent was gone for good we get another rooftop scene that just punched me in my gut. They proceeded to follow that up with a sexy shower scene of VinCat dancing to the song they had their first dance to. Some writers focus too much on the show’s pat and some writers don’t have a healthy enough respect for it; but as always Sherri and Jenny managed to find the perfect balance (which by the way, left me a little bit of an emotional wreck). Of course Gabe just sensed the perfect time to come and be a cock block (and I swear my whole timeline lit up like a Christmas tree when it happened). But at least it was with some semi-helpful news. But it doesn’t pan out and this leaves Vincent ready to run. Cat offers to go but it’s too late, the cops have her place surrounded and he has to blur away.

I really liked how this episode ended with shots of seeing what everyone is up to. Usually we just end with Cat, Vincent or VinCat, which is always nice but this definitely feels like a shift in the writers' focus to me for some reason. The music was also pitch perfect in my opinion for this episode.

I really liked the way this episode was written. It was hands down one of best put together scripts of the seasons and it should come as no surprise that Sherri Cooper and Jenny Levin were the ones who wrote this episode. I think the pacing was fantastic. The dialog was natural and filled with a kind of awkwardness that worked for the plot. All of our main characters got nearly equal attention. This is something I have been waiting for, for like 16 episodes since I was promised this show was moving in an ensemble cast direction way back during SDCC 2013. It’s such a pity that they haven’t be allowed to write much for season 2 and are getting knocked down to “consultants” for season 3.

I was absolutely in love with the way this episode was shot. It felt fresh in a whole lot of ways, so much so that I thought a new director had come on board. But that was not the case; it was one of my series favorites, Fred Gerber. He shook things up a bit by trying his hand at few new ways of capturing scenes. Some scene felt muted in a way that made me sit up and pay attention. The scenes were blocked and captured in such a way to put the focus on everyone in the scene not just one person for the most part and I really found myself liking that. Some directors make the viewer feel like an intruder verse an observer. Mr. Gerber makes me feel like a quiet observer and I think that for this show that fits best. I could gush all day about this particular technical point but I won’t…

For a show that has a fairy tale connotation for a title, our protagonists very rarely get those ‘happily ever after’ moments, do they? The cycle of being drawn together and torn apart is to be expected, especially since we answered that question of will they or won’t very early on in the series. The show shines best when Cat and Vincent (as well and Kristin and Jay) are allowed to play off each other. That’s the draw. They have amazing chemistry together. Every story needs conflict but I’m not sure if a story needs as much conflict as season 2 of BATB has had. It has quite literally been one thing after another without much of a break from the chaos, for the fans or the characters. I look forward to how they resolve this season over the course of the next 5 episodes.

I really hope they plan on getting back to the heart and soul of the show as well as revisit some of the overarching themes from last season such as: doing what is right, standing up for what you believe in, self-discovery, friendship and epic love. Because to me that what this how boils down and what makes it great. This show really does have something for everyone: a romantic side, an action side and a heavy Sci-Fi element that should totally be expounded upon, along with an awesome cast and a timeless story to be told.

I feel BATB has the potential to be a mainstream success if only the network would let it be. I’m hoping that next season there will be a lot more promotion for the show from the network as well as the fans. I’m happy to report that our ratings did go up from a .3 to .4 in the demo and we had the most viewers since last season’s finale (1.1 million). I'll chalk that up to the fans that created a street team initiative to literally put the butts in the seats and spread their love for the show the old fashioned way, word of mouth. My biggest hope is the ratings continue to climb for the duration and that the decision is made to make BATB a summer show, since it would mean less pressure for ratings, more time to promote it and also build up anticipation for the show. Only time will tell.

So until next week, keep roaring Beasties.

  1. Awesome review, I agree with your points about more promotion, let's hope so, and Summer seems to be best for the show. Love Kristin Kreuk!!!

  3. Great review. This episode was one the best of Season 2 and I totally agree that every characters had his space and a good screenplay. I liked so much of the episodes 1 and 2 - they seemed a great hook for all the season.
I always thought Gabe contacting Reynolds. I can't wait for see him away of VinCat, but I don't know say if the died would be best punishment to he.

You really helped BATB for a S3 too and not just we. Thank you :)

Finally, I Can't wait for the next episode!!

  5. Congratulations! I was blown away with everything he wrote, his analysis of the series, about the episode and the actors. Nicely put the information. Loved! Congratulations. This episode was certainly a watershed for CW and for sure will make a big difference in the final analysis of the issuer. Put the series to be displayed in the summer season was a great move.

  7. Great review, think it would been better to have him killed off in the next couple eps. There is no place for him.. I am sure there are other series it could go to..

  8. Great review; however, I don't believe Gabe is wasting space. Sure, I have a beef with him, but I think his 'talk' with Reynolds really pushed Gabe closer to the BAD GUY side more than anything else. I genuinely believe Gabe didn't turn Vincent in the first time. HOWEVER, I am led to think Gabe had something to do with notifying the police the second time around when Vincent was in Catherine's apartment as she packed her things.

It's possible that Gabe and Reynolds have been in touch; I wouldn't be surprised if Gabe has been leaking things to Reynolds since 2.09 "Don't Die on Me." He knows Reynolds wants Vincent out of the picture as much as he does so...anything is possible.

I do believe Gabe will go dark side soon. I wouldn't mind if he happens to turn out 'good' later, but the writers really need to pick a side for Gabe and stick with it. No more bouncing back and forth between Bad and Good. I think this whole redemption road for Gabe was just a mere Lex Luthor ploy. You make the seemingly BAD villain appear good...the villain feels good and does good to the world...only to go dark side when you least expected it. Granted, it took Lex Luther about 5 seasons to go completely dark side, and Gabe (if he does go dark) only 2, but a tiger never changes its stripes. The more BATB plays in the next 5 episodes, the more I am led to believe Gabe will venture down a dark path. He DOES have the makings of a good villain.

  10. Thanks Lilith and yes I have missed you! You always seem to be able to say exactly how I am feeling-in love with the show unconditionally but have had a really hard time in Season 2. I totally agree that the character of Gabe has run its course. I honestly feel that as much as we may like actors, it is to the detriment of shows that the character continues. There is too much negative press associated with so many things about Gabe this season-the ridiculous love triangle, the too much a Gabe show, all of those things and now messing with the reunion of VinCat..It is time to put his character to rest and have a new antagonist for VinCat as we know there always will be. I loved the episode but did have a hard time with some of the stuff. You hit the nail on the head when you said that every story has conflict but you didn't think that BATB needed as much conflict as season 2 has had, and I think that showed in the ratings. My dream as well is for the next 5 episodes and season 3 to get back to the essence of this show which are all the things you stated in your review-epic love and the amazing chemistry that JR and KK have. They need to be together and playing off each other and I think the boost in ratings was exactly for that reason., Seeing JT and Tess back mainstage was also a plus for me as we have missed them as well this season. It had so many Season 1 feels to it and hopefully the next 5 episodes will be more and more like Season 1 we all fell in love with. Thanks again and I always feel so much better when I read your reviews.

I’m so happy that my favorite show is back, and soo relieved about the solid ratings!

It was the first episode that gave me that season 1 feeling again. As you said, VinCat and their unprecedented chemistry are the draw of the show, and we got a lot to see of that! It was so wonderful to finally have our old VinCat who would do everything out of love for each other back!
I can only hope Sherri and Jennifer will still be writing for season 3. This episode proved again that
they are the heart and soul of this show, and the male dominated writing staff around Brad Kern needs the balance!

I still had some minor quibbles with the episode.
Back then cancellation was likely, so I understand why the writers had to rush it, but Cat went from “I can’t go backwards” to full “I’m going to sacrifice everything for Vincent”-mode in literally one day!

I also felt the dialogue was too hectic at some times and I had to lough about the stretches in writing they had to come up with to get Vincent and Cat fully dressed under the shower.(Cat’s windows don’t have curtains? Ahem, does this mean until now the neighbors always could watch them in the bedroom?) The scene was sweet though, although I don’t know why they only keep teasing us and shy away from showing us a full love/sex scene- they weren’t that shy last season! ;-)

Great review again, spot on for the most part (Gabe and his endless, drawn out, useless screentime, ughh)
And I think I know what you have in mind with the mentioned season 2 endgame and season 3 plans( let me just say “FBI”)

Good recap. I, too, think Summer would be better for it. Hopefully, the ratings will keep going up and the powers that be will make the decision. Fingers crossed. Oh, by the way, I still think Gabe is the big bad. That smile at the end revealed a lot.

Great review, i´m with you in all.
And for this Does anyone else feel like Gabe has been keeping in touch with Reynolds this whole time?
Yes, of course, no doubt about it
Love JT and Tess, love, love, love, finally
And VinCat was amazing and fell a lot like season 1 like you said.
I just love it all and can wait for nest week.
    Thank for your work :)

  18. Thanks for stopping by. I hope to see you back here next week! I love that BATB has such a huge international fandom, it really helped saved the show in my personal opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, things were rushed but it was also re-written and tweaked and edited quite a bit from what I can tell. I saw a second draft and it was a bit better but they must not have had time for some of the better but kind unnecessary stuff that I liked.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks. I'm happy that I can be positive about the show again. The possibility of cancellation was really wearing on me and everything that I directly correlated to the bad ratings had me on edge. I promised I wouldn't bat an eyelash over stuff they might have to do to get us back to where we want to be so I'm keeping said promise for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've seen the scripts and they are really good but a lot can get lost in translation from page to screen but I think the fandom in general is going to be really pleased with the outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Things are looking up for the show and I couldn't be happier. I feel like they spent the hiatus evaluating what worked and what didn't storywise and might be headed back to that formula from season 1 that I like a lot but with much more of an ensemble cast vibe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They've been too wishy washy with the character and I honestly just don't care about him. He sucks screen time away from the characters I and most of the fandom would prefer to see, JT and Tess. They deserve to be fleshed out much more than he does. I never bought Gabe as a good guy and it only annoyed me how much time they wasted trying to convince me. And don't even get me started on the lack of season 2 chemistry between Kristin and Sendhil. Season 1, sure it was a momentary rebound crack ship after Evan "died" (yep, still holding out hope, LOL).

I think Sendhil is a good draw and has a rabid fanbase that if we could tap into fully would be amazing for the show but they need to poop or get off the pot with what they truly want out of the character. I just don't see room for the character in season 3 if they are serious about the direction they want to take as stated in the season 3 synopsis.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was an emotional wreck this episode, to be honest. At first I thought I was just on BATB is back high, but ended up watching it about 4 times and it was just a whole lot better than most of the episodes this season. Plus, I think this might be one of Sherri and Jenny's last episodes and y'all know how much I love those gals.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thank you for stopping by to read and comment.

Oh, how interesting! I'd really like to know about the "better stuff", lol- are you allowed to tell? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Do u mean Sherri and Jenny's last episodes they wrote forever or just in the season? Because there awesome unlike the other writers, who don't capture the awesomeness of the show and VinCat like they do.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you! Great review! #BATB

    ReplyDelete
  29. This season. But you never know they are slowly being edged out for reasons I have no clue about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That sucks, thanks for telling me, I didn't know that, but I did notice the number of episodes they were writing has declined from Season 1. I personally didn't like some of the changes the new writers brought in.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe we should do a trend on twitter to get Sherri and Jennifer back on top. They really are the backbone of the show from the crew side. It was their baby, and interpretation of the rendition that gave us season 1 and had everyone fall in love with it. Though I was disappointed with the "super romantic Valentine episode" being more about Cat and Gabe that Vincent and Cat, I feel like they were stuck in what they were told they had to do so they tried to at least give us something to hold on to with VinCat. Whether fans liked or disliked season 2 up until getting VinCat back, it is obvious from ratings and comments that the successful season has been season 1 so again I have always been taught to not change what is not broken and what Sherri and Jennifer gave us in season 1 was broken in season 2, so the best choice would be to go back to what worked and that was the team of Sherri, Jennifer, BrianPeterson and Kelly Souders.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I needed to gush about this episode, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Really Great review....I love how you are so on target with creepy Gabe. How could he ever be redeemed or trusted. He wasn't really needed in S2 and I have to wonder why he got so much screen time and was forced on the audience. He is the worst romantic character ever and his scenes with Cat were beyond laughable. And really, Catherine would have ever trusted him after last season...don't this so. What were the writers trying to prove with him? Seeing him die (again) would thrill most of the fans and probably improve the ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great review.. thoroughly enjoyed it.

  35. I always enjoy these comments and your review. It illuminates so many details in these episodes, and I just would like to add two small details: whatever happened to Cat's badge?? and is JT's blood still in the criminals' database??? I hate to see more loose ends, we've had enough of those already
Love this show, it is my favorite

    ReplyDelete
  36. u've seen the scripts?? jealous!! though having said that i do want to get surprised so i won't complain too much hehe :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. my feeling is he will be gone after season 2.. cannot see how they will be able to include him in season 3..

    ReplyDelete
  38. they definitely also wrote a lot of 21 and 22

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for another awesome review, Lilith. And yes - I've thought for a long time that Gabe is in 'cahoots' with Bob in trying to protect Catherine from Vincent. I'm not sure having Sherry and Jennifer as "consultants" for Season 3 will be a good thing, unless it gives them some input into every episode. They are terrific writers, as this episode clearly shows.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cat's badge is probably going to come into play real soon. And yes, JT's blood is more than likely in the criminal database now. I don't know if that will come into play though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's good to know. I've been trying my damndest to stay away from spoilers so I can approach each episode with as much of an untainted prejudice as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I really hate the Gabe conundrum. SR rocks as an actor and as a person. He could be a really big draw if marketed the right way and character hadn't been run over and thrown under the bus to try and fit the plot. The thing he had going for him coming into season 2 was the mystery of why he wasn't a beast anymore and it was so lame and half assed that everything else that had to do with Cat was annoying for me personally. Character DO NOT need to be defined by a relationship to be important. Also, still never going to be over Gabe not grieving over Tyler. It just rubs me the wrong way. But I think the character has lost it's appeal for a lot of us in the fandom. Unless he becomes a beast again, I literally don't care just keep him away from Cat and I'm happy. Gabe felt so shoehorned into this episode. I really hate the 'white knight' syndrome all the guys have on this show at various times.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, my gosh, I'm not sure if they are "executive consultants" or not, executive consultants on TV shows sometimes have a lot of say such as breaking the season and whether or not it's OK to change the canon bible of the show and such but most of the time it just a money thing. But this show is their baby and I just can't see them voluntarily taking a backseat just to collect an easier paycheck.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i agree that his character was poorly developed in season 2. he was not believable as a good guy and he was not believable as a baddie. his character was not complex enough - so really, even though Sendhil is a good actor and he has had some really good moments in BATB, I do not really care much about him. I believe he will now go cuckoo mad and be the big baddie causing huge problems for vincat till the very end (apparently he features really heavily in 22). i would like to see that but of course that does not change the way his character was portrayed for the rest of the season. oh, btw, i was not bothered about him not mourning tyler i dont think he cared about her and it was never really shown to us that he did care...ultimately i think gabe is incapable to fully love somebody but he is used to having whatever he wants and so has become very possessive of cat especially since he knows she can never be his...he just wont be able to let go i feel.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks! I'm happy and it just shows. I missed the show and my beasties very much.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you Lilith, having this conversation is like being one big family. And your point about Tyler and the way she was treated by Gabe is absolutely right, I am sure Gabe will show his true character soon.
I have to add that there is one more line that made me feel nostalgic: when Vincent told Catherine, towards the end "I will find you." That took me back to the "Last of the Mohicans" and Daniel Day-Lewis!!!! Great drama there too...

    ReplyDelete
  47. I loved that show Last of the Mohicans and Daniel Day Lewis. I had a thought that maybe the cold case the FBI are going to ask Vincent and Catherine to help with has to do with Gabe. They never did really find out who killed Ray Shekman and the Carriage driver and who knows who else before he came to find Vincent for his own selfish needs. So maybe the FBI have been looking into Gabe for awhile as remember when BioDad first came on the scene he was looking for Gabe not Vincent. Then the FBI can help clear Vincent's name as they are actually the ones who got Vincent to kill the beasts in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks Lilith for the review. As far as I'm concerned, season 2 has ended and we just watched episode 1 of season 3 with 18 episodes to go. Moving in the right direction once again. I was pleasantly surprised to hear of season 3 renewal, always claiming that this show has so much potential. Summer/winter split works just fine for me, I'll watch the show whenever, haven't missed one yet. Every Beastie has their own personal reason for watching, whether it's the original TV show, the Disney movie, fan of JR or long time fan of KK, there are enough passionate fans to keep it going. The Smallville/Lana Lang flash backs were great. The kid napping, green meteor rock, "Wherever you wiil go", and of course the use of "Blur". If it ain't broke don't fix it. I focused too much on the SV references that I missed some of the finer points. I guess I'll have to watch it again.

  49. Yeah, I'm not actually a fan of the earlier seasons version of Lana Lang in Smallville, to be honest. I like the role Cat for KK because right off the bat Cat was competent, fierce and had a more compelling backstory. I actually wish they would tone down the Smallville references because for a lot people that isn't necessarily a positive connotation. But I'm gad you like them and this episode.

  50. Always enjoy your review. I love that the faster-pace of this episode, that Cat's character shines through, that old pieces of Vincent's vulnerability and sweetness resurfacing, that TJ man's up, that more layers of Tess's character are added, that heart-to-heart friendship and that off the chart VinCat on-screen chemistry. Too many loves! What a GREAT difference that great writing can do to exponentiate the potential of this show. Absolutely enjoyed this episode.

  52. loved the episode, and yes I believe Gabe is right up there with good old Dad,at the end of season he was very concerned with making sure Gabe was captured and I guess taken bake with him,so the end shot & the smile on Gabe's face says he's up to no good.I wish the CW would run reruns during all of the hiatus times for us it would make it much easier to cope with the long weeks not seeing anything.
