The Originals - From a Cradle to a Grave - Review

Wow, just wow. The finale was without a doubt the best episode of the season. It had everything. Emotion, action, cliffhangers, …
A brief summary: most of the vampires are dead; Hayley’s a hybrid; Hope will be staying with Rebekah (off screen unfortunately); Klaus and Marcel made up; Monique, Genevieve and the other harvest girl are dead; Mikael, Esther and Finn are not; everybody thinks Hope is dead and that’s pretty much it.

Best chemistry moment: The flashback between Klaus and Hayley was so beautiful. I hate that we never got scenes like this throughout the season. The letter she wrote to her daughter was beautiful, you could tell that she knew there was a chance she wouldn’t make it through this alive and wanted her daughter to have something of her. Unlike Hayley herself, who had nothing of her parents. The overlapping with the birth was very well edited.
Character I will miss the least: I sort of predicted Monique would die in the first half of the episode. So she technically died 15 seconds into the second half, I still consider myself right. I swear, when she slit Hayley’s throat, the first thing that went through my mind was: “Oh, I hope you die a slow and painful death.” It may not have been slow, but I can imagine that a thousand cuts is probably kind of painful. So ding dong, the witch is dead.

Best death: Another character I won’t miss, Genevieve. Honestly Hayley did her a favor by killing her quickly because it looked like the spirits had a very slow and painful death in mind for her. You can see by Elijah’s expression that he can see a difference in Hayley. Well yeah, if someone slit your throat and ripped your newborn from your arms, you’d be different too. I’m surprised she’s not more screwed up.

Best fight: Klaus, Hayley and Elijah versus the witches. So you know how when someone is in transition they usually feel pretty weak? Hayley was so pissed off she actually managed to get some good punches in. But they were no match for the witches (both alive and dead). Luckily Marcel saved the day with a ninja star.

Worst idea: Davina is going to regret this, I guarantee it. I get that she wants to make Klaus pay, but bringing back Mikael, who is worse than Klaus, is not the way. And considering she’s keeping him on a tight leash, I’m guessing when he gets out of that, he’ll most likely turn on her.
Best sacrifice: Phoebe did an amazing job during the scene where she tells Klaus and Elijah that they should give Hope up. I was trying very hard not to cry during this scene (later in this review you will read how I failed miserably). I can only imagine how hard it is to have to give up your child, especially because of things you can’t control. But she’s right, Hope would not be safe there. Especially now that the vampire army has shrunken down to (I think) Marcel and Josh.

Best ‘O shit’ moment: I think you all know which moment I’m referring to. Esther is back, and it would seem that she’s brought Finn back as well. It’s a shame they couldn’t come back in their own bodies. I’m not a big fan of the body-take-over (mainly because it makes viding a lot harder). But I understand if they couldn’t get the actors back, I know they used a stunt double for the flashback featuring Esther in the premiere. But having both mama and papa Original back means big trouble. Am I the only one who wants to see them face off. And are you seriously telling me that the only Original that is still dead happens to be one of my favorites. I demand we get Kol back as well.

Best name: Hope, it’s absolutely perfect. If I remember correctly, in the beginning of the season this baby was described as hope for both Klaus and the Original family. But she’s more than that. She brought out Klaus’ redemption, gave Elijah a chance to open up his heart again, made Hayley grow up and realize where her priorities are and has given Rebekah the chance to life a human life, with a white picket fence. I could not have come up with a better name.
Best speech: As much as I am a Klayley fan, I really liked Elijah’s speech to Klaus about how he let Hayley in. Over the centuries Elijah’s problem has not been that he didn’t trust, like Klaus, but that whenever he let someone in, they would either end up dead (Celeste) or betray him (Katherine). I can only imagine what happened with Tatia, a story I desperately want answers to. But he did let Hayley in, and you could see how heartbroken he was to find out that she was dead.

Worst speech: Elijah again, when he started yelling at Klaus in the church, blaming him, I got a little upset with him. I get that he was sad and angry, but this was not the time or the place for this. Klaus just saw the mother of his child get murdered and then his child was ripped out of her arms so it could be sacrificed. Go find her instead of yelling, Hayley would’ve been pissed if she knew they’d wasted time arguing. Something I do need to add is that I thought that Elijah felt a little out of place. This episode was mainly about Klaus, Hayley and their baby. The fact that Elijah was so involved in the second part of the episode, when they were making the decision to give her up, felt weird to me. But that is just my opinion.

Best Return/Favorite scene: Okay, so by the time we got to this point, I was barely holding myself together. I started thinking of who Klaus and Hayley would trust to give their daughter to. I knew it wouldn’t be a stranger because Hayley wouldn’t want the same thing that happened to her, happen to her daughter. You know how I said last week that this would’ve been a great moment for Rebekah to come save the day? Well I never expected it to actually happen. The fact that it was Claire who left the show, gave me little hope that we’d see her any time soon. And yet, there she was. The minute Rebekah stepped out of the car I started sobbing, like uncontrollably sobbing. This is probably my favorite scene of the entire season, it’s exactly what I wanted from ‘The Originals’. Rebekah’s face when they meet again, she seems happy and content. The fact that even though they did not exactly part on good terms, he still trusts her. I think some time apart from one another did them good, they were making each other miserable. But seeing them together again has made me realize how much I’ve missed them. My absolute favorite part of this scene is when he gives her the wooden toy from when they were kids. Rebekah’s reaction to finding out that after all of these centuries, after all of their fights, he still kept it was perfect. We better see Rebekah and Hope again soon, and I don’t mean the next finale.
Biggest questions
- What are Esther and Finn up to?
- How will Hayley handle being a hybrid?
- When will we see Rebekah and Hope again?
- When will we get Kol back?
- When will Josh get a love interest?
- What happened with Tatia?
- Now that the Other Side is gone, will this have an effect on the witches who practice ancestral magic?
- How long do you think it’ll take before Oliver bites the dust as well?

Best quotes
Rebekah: “She looks like her mother. Maybe there is a god after all.”
Josh: “Okay, I am hallucinating.”
Klaus: “In spite of our differences, Rebekah, there is no one I would trust more with my daughter’s life. Be happy, sister.”

So I know I’m a little late with this, but I’ve been so busy studying for finals (first exam is Tuesday, wish me luck). I can’t wait for season two. I’ve been a little disappointed with the last few episodes, but this finale totally made up for it. Let me know in the comments what you guys thought.

  2. First thin first, thank you for the awesome review and Best of luck with the exams! This is as you said the best episode of TO! Personally I am glad that it's moving and not go head to head with PLL, hopefully the ratings will increase further.
I thinking for the next season, TO might focus more on Kaus-Hayley bond, she's a hybrid now and he's without female distractions now that one is dead and he send the other away. Not necessary romantic but building a connection.
I wonder if Oliver would pursues Davina, now that that the Wolves are in charge and Marcel can't probably do much to protest or protect. I am quite curious as well on how Marcel and Hayley would evolve now that we now that she was one of the children he had save! Poor Elijah is in for a hard time I am afraid (at least in the beginning) given the hints that Phoebe gave about Hayley's turning dark.
I would probably be wrong given how unpredictable TO is! Anyways thank you for taking the time to review, awesome and insightful as always and looking forward to new ones next season!

  3. I think it's like Esther ordered the witches to kill Hayley. It makes total sense from her perspective. She killed Tatia for coming in between Klaus and Elijah (or at least that's what Elijah told Stefan & Damon) so it would make total sense that she'd want Hayley dead after what's been going on with Elijah. She's probably want to kill any girl who came between her son and tore them apart (as Hayley is doing).

I saw the interview - but it seemed like she was just trying to please the reporter because what she actually said is Hayley needs time by herself to sort of figure things out. From past interviews it seemed like neither PT or DG really liked Hayley/Elijah and Daniel said they were gross and obscene and Elijah has a sickness. PT at first seemed like to like the idea of Klaus/Hayley previously but I think she's a bit afraid of the crazy Klaroline shippers so I don't think she'll actually say that. All the actors have kind of toned down saying negative things about the show and the plot-lines though so I think someone (maybe Julie) had a talk with them.

Hayley doesn't have her daughter, she's probably going to be exiled by the werewolves now that she's a hybrid, etc... Hayley needs to figure out who she is on her own first (she doesn't need Elijah to be trying to fix her into the person that Elijah wants Hayley to be). She didn't need to be focused on her love life in Season 1 and I don't think she needs to be in Seaosn 2 either. I did see that Pheobe also said that Hayley is actually going to get closer to Klaus now that she's also a hybrid (which sort of reminds me of how Elena got closer to Damon once she became a vampire and how Caroline's relationship with Matt fell apart when she became a vampire and she gravitated towards Tyler instead).

Nate will appear in Seaosn 2. It may only be flashbacks and not the present day - but he was on set filming for Season 2 (he had to miss a day of Bloodycon because he was filming for TO) while they were shooting the first three episodes so he will appear at some point.

I don't think Josh is dead. I think he probably left the compound after he was healed so Mikael only killed the vampire who were dying of wolf-bites and laying around.

  4. I think a love triangle is fixing to happen in the future. If not in Season 2, then in or by Season 3, Hayley will appear to be torn between Klaus and Elijah. When she was a werewolf terrified that Klaus was going to kill her after childbirth, Hayley stuck close to Elijah and may have developed feelings for him, but you're right that they don't know each other enough for either of them to call it love. I would call it infatuation that manifested from manipulation. If Elijah really loved Hayley, he would have ignored her craving for her baby's blood and anticipated that when she becomes a hybrid, she probably won't thank him for making her one by letting her drink her own daughter's blood. We've seen people in transition to becoming vampires decide to die, but it's possible that a hybrid in transition is unable to make that decision for themselves when they're feeling drawn to the blood. Hayley seemed really out of it when she first woke up.

I don't know why anyone is bothering to ask about Tatia when the EPs are clearly determined to keep doppelgangers out of the show, even though at point, Klaus and Elijah's fighting over Hayley/the baby got so severe that it made me think back to the stories of them fighting over doppelgangers. I also think that Nate Buzolic will only appear as Kol in flashbacks. I read on a credible website that the new character Kaleb is supposed to not only be a paranormal psychologist, but also a witch who just wants to have a good time with witches in the New Orleans coven. Remind you of anyone? Kaleb's presence might trigger the flashbacks. Normally I would jump to the conclusion that Kaleb might be Kol resurrected in a different body, but Kaleb is supposed to not be a fan of the Original family. I can see why Kol would be angry with his siblings for ignoring him and forgetting about him, but I won't go as far as to think that Kol would fight against any of them. Who knows? Whatever happens, it appears that very soon Nate Buzolic will be seen in flashbacks playing Kol. I don't think Nate Buzolic will be on TO as a regular, but I've been wrong before. Since another character named Lenore is supposed to take control of the witch coven and become a problem for Klaus, I hope that some of the characters from Season 1 get killed off before the show becomes as overpopulated with characters as TVD.

  5. If Esther wanted Hayley dead, I don't think it was because of the brothers fighting, or at least it wasn't only because of that. Esther seems to have a problem with her children being happy and getting along with anyone, especially each other. Hayley's death started another fight and slowed down any attempt to rescue the baby, something that Esther probably knew would happen. She only wants her children together when she can kill them. Otherwise, she wants them separated and cut off from others because, as is the premise of the show, family is power. When the siblings stand together on something, they're strong enough to kill Esther. Her last death was a joint effort between Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah, even though Klaus was the one who actually killed her. After that, Elijah convinced the siblings to scatter and he left town himself to start another affair with Katherine, which is why I don't believe Elijah is serious about wanting to save his family. Daniel Gillies' theory might not be completely accurate. I believe that Elijah has a sickness, but it makes him convince himself that he wants to save his family, particularly Klaus, even though deep down Elijah really just wants to punish Klaus and take things away from him. There is a lot of Esther in Elijah, but it's buried so deep under manipulation and a strong adherence to an askew moral code that what Elijah really wants is hard to notice.

  6. "Her last death was a joint effort between Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah, even though Klaus was the one who actually killed her."

I think you need to brush up on Season 3 of TVD. Esther died the last time because Alaric stabbed her (he killed her). Klaus had no part in her death at all - he and the other vampires were all trapped in the high school by Esther's boundary spell at the time.

Esther turned Alaric into an Original and when he woke up in transition he was his old self before his ego alter-ego took over and he decided to kill her because Esther was ready to kill Jeremy & Matt (who had come to try to stop her).

  7. Oh, now I remember. Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah just found a way to scare Esther off when she tried to do that spell to destroy the vampire race. Even though they didn't manage to kill her, it doesn't change the fact that when even two siblings worked together, they were strong enough to stop her and they had her on the run. She had to take time to regroup and try a different strategy that still failed. I think Esther should be afraid of the family that she accidentally made more powerful than her. She cursed Klaus because she claimed that he was too powerful. It's probably a matter of perspective how big a role MIkael played in that decision, and we know how small a role he played in the act. Esther actually cursed her son because she wanted to be the most powerful individual in her family. I believe that's also why she decided to remain a witch. She thought she would be able to control a group of vampires as long as she held onto her power. My theory is that performing the immortality spell on her family, against the will and without the knowledge of most of them, had consequences to Esther's humanity, not much unlike too many trips to the Other Side using the Gilbert resurrection ring. Then Esther cursed her own son, killing an innocent vampire, werewolf, and doppelganger, and that made Esther go even darker. Now she's probably barely a shadow of who she was before she damned and cursed her family. It's just something that tossed around in my head a little.

  8. He lost interest in Katherine because she lied and lied to him, and made it clear her feelings were as genuine as Klaus is stable.

  9. Kaleb isn't Kol, it's been confirmed Nathaniel Buzolic is returning.

  10. ESTHER HAS BEEN TRYING TO KILL HER VAMPIRE CHILDREN (ON THE VAMPIRE DIARIES SHOW) & RID THE WORLD OF ALL VAMPIRES FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW, FAILING TO KILL HER CHILDREN EVERY TIME.

I'll try to keep this in mind for next season. I tried to stay objective this season for as long as I could, but I'm only human and my shipper heart tends to take over from my objective brain sometimes. But I'll definitly try to reel it back next season.

Floved this epi! I don't care about those that hate ship's etc....but I love Klaus and Hayley. There is just soo much to be explored, and it is unfolding naturally and organically in my mind. I also think that this epi was amazing because of the vamp tricks....like speed etc....this was missing in previous epi's. What should we call it CGI? I think that all those vamp powers aka CGI effects helped to boost the ratings of the show. Quite frankly CW needs to allow the show to do more of this, as it helps their bottom line which is to get and retain more viewers. Can't wait for season 2.....hopefully some serious steaminess will arise!!
