Thanks to Philomina for the heads up.

Rick Cosnett talks to myFanbase about playing Eddie Thawne on "The Flash" and Dr Wes on "The Vampire Diaries"

Q: Congrats on landing the part of Eddie Thawne on "The Flash"! You're gonna play a supervillain right after playing a villain on "The Vampire Diaries". Is that your favorite part of acting, exploring how a character is pulled into the darkness?

A: Wow thanks! We're so excited about it. Unfortunately you're going to have to watch to find out exactly what happens as Eddie's lips are sealed right now. I do love the messed up depths of Dr Wes and I think it's something that fascinates and scares me about the human condition. I always want to know why people behave in extremes and how they got to that point. Eddie is a wonderfully complicated character to play.

Q: On "The Vampire Diaries" you play Dr. Wes Maxfield who introduces a whole new story arc to the show, the secret society Augustine. Secret societies are always somehow enticing. Can you relate to Wes' choices, trying to eliminate a threat using scientific methods?

A: I related Wes' choices very much to prejudice. He is a man who is simply ignorant and spirals out of control. He sees vampires as 'other', just as a lot of ignorant people in society today see different races, sexes etc as 'other' to themselves. They will treat people completely differently based on this awful assumption and so it is with Wes. Hopefully with the fall of Wes, what we can take away are values of equality. I hope, something in addition to blood and sexy vampires of course.

  1. I'm not really interested in The Flash, but I'm glad someone pointed out that Dr. Wes' attitude and behavior was a fictional form of racism and attempted genocide as it would happen in the supernatural genre. His alliance with Travelers aside, Dr. Wes wasn't much different from the Founders of Mystic Falls, who made it their mission to kill anything they didn't understand.

  2. That's a really great answer to the question about Dr. Wes Maxfield.

  3. I haven't seen the last couple of seasons of Vampire Diaries, but I'm not sure that comparing vampires to a persecuted minority is justified. If justice was served, vampires would be executed for the multiple murders they commit. The two 'heroes' of the show are mass murders and rapists, and even Caroline has killed.

  4. Do remember how many people the 'heroes' of the show have murdered? And the rapes they have committed? Everybody they come in contact with ends up dead or a vampire. I don't blame the founders one bit. Vampires appear to be bad news, anyway you slice it. Call the Winchester brothers!
