Rookie Blue - Blink - Review

Welcome back to Rookie Blue Season 5! It’s been a looong wait since last season’s finale with the cliff-hangers making us hang onto the edges of our seats. How wonderful is it that we get to have 22 episodes this season? Also, this is my first Rookie Blue review, so please be gentle.

We open right after where we left off last season. Sam going into surgery, Chloe waking up with a blood clot in her and Oliver suffering a concussion and some bruises. The hospital couldn’t contact Sam’s next-of-kin, so Nick went to track his sister, Sarah Swarek down to bring her to the hospital.

She’s such a peach, isn’t she?

Poor Nick. Andy told him the truth that she told Sam she still loves him. Nick walked away heartbroken. So McCollins fans, do you think this mark the end of their short lived relationship? Nobody will get out of this love triangle (quadrangle if you count Marlo in it) unscathed. Sam and Andy patched things up towards the end of the episode, the fans finally getting what they wished for. I think what they need in order for their relationship to work, is communication. Don’t kill me McSwarek fans, but I don’t see them working if they don’t sort their things out as a couple and individually. Everything is so messy with Marlo and Nick. But for now, they’re back together. We all know things won’t be sunshine and rainbows after this.

I don’t want to be sad anymore.

One of the things I wish to see this season is for Andy and Sam to face the music for covering for Marlo. I know as a fan of the show, I wouldn’t want anything to jeopardize their career, but I think it’s important that they need to know what they did was not OK.

So not Marlo this episode, but I hope she’ll show up. I know Rachael Ancheril is not coming back as a regular this season, but it would be good if to give us closure to her storyline regarding the Ford shooting and her relationship with Sam if we want the McSwarek ship to be in full swing.

One of the highlights of the episode, Andy and Dov was at the diner when a couple of drug addicts came in robbing the place. When things go south, Andy is faced with another person being shot, second time that night. This time however, the guy doesn’t make it.

Poor Andy, not again.

Chloe gave us a death scare this episode, but came back to live shortly after. Chloe and Dov made up after her heart attack, but I’m sure her husband will be back to stir up some drama. I really love the scene where Dov and Wes both bought gifts for Chloe and made comments about each other’s choice of gifts. Nice to have a little laugh during such an intense episode.

I also love the interaction between Chloe and Oliver. Oliver is such a great character, he’s fun to be around, yet he can be such a father figure to the rookies and a brother and friend to his colleagues. I’m looking forward to see more of his relationship with Celery too. From what I read about Oliver’s storyline this season, it’s going to be interesting to watch.

To incorporate Charlotte Sullivan’s wish to chop off her hair, I think the writers handled it well in the show. Gail snips off her ponytail, holding it to Holly explaining to her what every few inches of those long blonde hair stands for. So chill out, people! It’s not a gay panic. It was really well executed. Besides, Charlotte looks amazing with the new ‘do.

Let’s wash this mess down the drain.

Look, Gail is one of my favourite character ever since the show started. All these different layers of the character makes her interesting to watch and you can’t help but to root for her. Although I did have some suspicions about Gail’s sexuality back in the first season, I’d like to think that being with Holly isn’t really about her being with someone of the same gender, more because of Holly as a person. Sure, being in a relationship with another woman is a huge milestone in Gail’s character arc, but if the writers want to put Gail with a woman for the sake of defining her sexuality, that doesn’t mean she’ll open up to any other woman like she did with Holly. Someone who understands her brand of snarkiness and willing to stay long enough to see how amazing Gail actually is behind her façade. This isn’t about labels. I like how she talked about Jerry’s death, even if it’s just a mention. It’s the first time we’ve heard her talked about it. I know there’s still a long way to go for this season, but I think Holly’s going to stick around for a while. I would like to see how this plays out with Gail’s family and friends.

Now that Traci’s an established detective, her story arc this season seems to be personal. She’s having problems with Leo’s custody when Dex shows up at the precinct, upset about their child’s wellbeing. Steve, trying to be Traci’s knight in shining armour, goes about it the wrong way. It will not go well when Traci finds out he did a background check on Dex, which I’m sure Steve will find something and use it against Dex. Side note, I’m glad Steve is sticking around as Traci’s love interest. I hope he gets screen time with Gail too.

A new face was introduced in tonight’s episode, Inspector Jarvis. He’s investigating the shooting that happened at 15th and was not impressed with what he saw. He’s way of cleaning the mess is for someone to put the blame on and to serve them up to the bosses. And that someone is Sergeant Best. He surrenders his badge and I hope this is not the last time we see him. Speaking of Best, where's Noelle?

Are you guys going to be heroes or you going to be screw ups?

To conclude, I really enjoyed the premiere. This is going to be one hell of a ride. So let’s all hold hands and brace ourselves for the fifth season. Oh and be sure to catch the webisodes on the show’s GlobalTV site. It’s really fun to watch. Let me know what you guys think about the episode!

  1. Poor Nick, getting the short end of the stick. Andy doesn't know what she's letting go. I've been over McSwarek for awhile now. Too unrealistic of a relationship.

Also, really excited to see how all the other character's story lines are going to play out. Seems like it's going to be interesting!

  6. Oh, come on, Nick and Andy had nothing more than a great friendship with some benefits. We've known from the beginning that Sam and Andy are meant to be. Yes, they've had their bumps in the road, but what relationship hasn't? They've both made mistakes, they've both grown and I think we're going to see the fruit of that this season when they are more open with each other. Therefore, their relationship will flourish. Is it going to be easy? Nope, but nothing worth having ever is. :)

I completly agree with Salina! We ve watched sam and andy since season one in my and many other mcswareck fans opinion they r a major draw to the show, you can't deny the chemistry they have together and the way they look and smile at each other , they don't need words! I must say I am over the hole poor nick thing, he is portrayed to be this noble guy but in my opinion he is no more noble then sam! Sam watched as andy was with Luke and engaged and he respected that and was there when she needed him even when Luke wasn't! And then In the finale of season 4 even though he still loved her he told her he wanted her to be happy more then anything , more then anything he could want for himself, he was giving up his own happiness and walking away cuz he thought she was happy with nick! Is sam perfect no but who is and for that matter neither is andy and they have both screwed up, does that mean that after everything they have been thru in 4 seasons they shouldn't really get the chance they deserve? I believe they have both grown so much and learned a lot and that's what was needed for them to work! Sam knows he needs to open up and let andy in and we will see that this season, he doesn't wanna waste anymore time and neither does she, and they can be happy together, will it be a fairytale prob not cuz what real relationship is but that doesn't mean they still can't have a happy ending together and I for one cannot wait to see that! Us faithful mcswareck fans have waited for this and it's finally here, bring on mcswareck!

  8. When Nick dropped Gail the first time in Vegas he was scared kid, and he made up for it (he went to war and after came back he was the perfect boyfriend for Gail). The second time around he tried to make it work after the undercover stunt, even though he had feelings for Andy, it was Gail who cheated and the reason why Nick stoped trying to make it work.

  9. The writers of this show don't know how to realisticly show relationship between McSwarek, any woman with a sensible mind wouldn't go back to a guy like Sam, because they end up doing the same thing over and over again. That's why despite liking Andy I think she's a moron going back to Sam, she would have been better alone.

  10. As the reviewer of the show, this love triangle isn't going to help any of them. They will all get hurt. The writers should end it once and for all and not every viewer can get what they want. That's all I'm going to say.

  11. OMG, what kind of so-called perfect boyfriend isn't around after Gail's first UC as an escort is so scary? She thought she might be killed for a minute. Then after a serial killer kidnapped her and she was struggling and stepped up to take the blame for the jail shooting and got suspended, Nick applied for a long-term UC not knowing whether she might completely fall apart. He used her Europe trip as the excuse to take it when he was offered the slot. Nick was NEVER a great boyfriend to Gail. He just liked the challenge of winning her back a second time. He even said the only reason he liked her the first time is because she blew him off at first when she was his waitress. No wonder Gail has a complex that as soon as she shows she into someone, they'll lose interest. Nicholas did a number on her.

  12. I really liked the premiere, and can't wait for next week. It looks hilarious! The new rookie should be a hoot! I'm happy that (mostly) the hospital stuff will be relegated to this episode, because I'm eager to get back to the lives and the streets of RB. Love everything Oliver, that man is gold. The dialogue/convos throughout the episode felt real and honest, which was nice. I liked that Nick went and found Sarah (and can't wait to see her and her bro interact) The new Inspector is hardcore, and you may sense a pattern here, but I really can't wait to see him interact with Swarek. Especially, after that convo with Frank in the office. Poor Frank, he got ran over big time and it SUCKED. Though I think I'm one of the few who thinks that his exit was pretty outstanding, writing-wise. It is a drama afterall, and that was a pretty crappy exit but the door is still open for his return. Here's hoping! I want to see more of Chris next week to get some sort of read on him for this year, his two minutes was just that...two minutes. LOL Lastly, my heart clenched in my chest during those final 30 seconds of Sam and Andy. The sad comment really got to me. I loved it. Can't wait to see these two learn from past mistakes and hopefully go forward together. Good episode overall. I really, REALLY missed this show. :)

Fun and sweet plus boring! Sam and andy have the passion and love that will last a lifetime!

  14. Not boring... and I actually never felt "the passion" between Sam and Andy, more like constant squabbling, kinda gave me a headache.

  15. Yes, I agree with your thoughts! Can't wait for the new rookie he's going to be hilarious. The premiere seems to set the season up pretty well, really looking forward to the rest of season 5 :)

  16. When Gail got kidnapped she wasn't with Nick, she was between Chris and Nick. Besides Nick was there for her, maybe should watch the episode first. And Gail could've included Nick in her plans for Europe which she didn't do cause she wanted to cut all ties if she got suspended. And come on Gail isn't an easy person to be with and he at least tried, and in the end it was she who cheated.

If you never felt the passion between them then you must have been watching the wrong show, all andy and nick felt like were brother and sister, not to worries though cuz that's over and it's back to the real couple mcswareck!
