Person of Interest - Season 3 - Review + Best Episode Poll

30 May 2014

Person of Interest has had an interesting third season. There have been episodes that are worthy of the Gods (The Crossing, The Devil’s Share); those that speak to the core focus of the show (Lethe, Aletheia); those in between (Deus Ex Machina, RAM) and those that have been just your straightforward, run of the mill episode – what is usually referred to on a serialised show as ‘filler’. The filler episodes have appeared more times than one would hope this season, which, if it weren’t for the quality of the other episodes, would have really dragged the season down.

Though, I do have to question how far the show has come since season one. What we would now consider to be a filler episode is basically what most of season one was, and in fact the core premise of the weekly episode. The dynamic duo of Reese and Finch stopping crime before it happens. When I started watching the show, I found this idea very cool and I loved what I saw.

Since Kara Stanton’s death last season, Person of Interest have had a lot of these high quality, serialised episodes. What this has done is raise the standard by which we (or certainly, I) judge all other episodes on the show. This probably isn’t the best way of analysing episodes, but if every episode isn’t as good as it could be, it is very frustrating. Of course, I do appreciate how difficult it would be to write 23 episodes like ‘The Devil’s Share’, for example, per season. However, I do feel that the filler episodes this season have been lacking in quality, compared to regular episodes from the first two seasons.

But let’s be honest. A few mediocre episodes did nothing to ruin the ingenuity on show in the third season. This show has really come into its element this year, delivering sublime and shocking episodes that aren’t afraid to throw everything into the air (see the ending of Deus Ex Machina).

The main focus of the season was the Machine (and Root). We knew from ‘God Mode’ that it had moved itself, and although we did see it create an identity to protect itself last season, it really developed this year. Two prime examples were manipulating things to have Reese be on that plane (in ‘4C’) and providing the team with a number that it expected them to kill, rather than save or stop.

This development has been incredible. Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman have done a fantastic job of illuminating just how powerful AI systems can become. Yes, this is a television show, but with last year’s revelation of PRISM, it is far from sci-fi. And while seeing the Machine do all it has done may seem unrealistic, it is far from that. In a world of fast-developing technology, anything can be possible. Yes, that includes having Root as the user interface.

Speaking of Root, she has very quickly turned around my feelings towards her. I have come to love her character this season, something I would not have said before. Her development has been brilliant, and she has become one of, if not the most crucial character.

As for the characters, there’s been a lot of backseat driving by Reese this season. Focus has shifted away from him (onto The Machine), though we have had some great episodes with him. Carter’s story culminated in a fantastic, yet horrible (yes, I’m still pissed about her death) trilogy – three of the greatest episodes the show has done.

Fusco became more involved after Carter’s death, but a scene in the season finale reminded us just how much of an outsider he still is. However, his one-liners and interaction with Root and Shaw is priceless.

Shaw was developed well, particularly in ‘Razgovor’. While we still saw a lot of the ruthless, yet fun, killer Shaw, seeing flashbacks to her childhood helped develop her character. Finch had a lot of interaction with Root, though the most memorable episode for him is ‘Beta’. Seeing Finch SO close to reuniting with Grace was heart-breaking.

A few awards to hand out:

Best episode: The Devil’s Share
Worst episode: Provenance
Best scene: Carter’s death (followed closely by Simmons’s death)
Best Reese moment: Reese risks his life escaping the morgue to try to buy Carter time to escape (The Crossing)
Best Finch moment: Finch helps Grace up without letting her know it’s him (Beta)
Best Carter moment: Carter shoots at Alonzo Quinn (Endgame)
Best Fusco moment: Fusco fights and arrests Simmons (The Devil’s Share)
Best Shaw moment: Shaw saves Fusco’s son (The Crossing)
Best Root moment: Root overpowers Control (Aletheia)

All told, season 3 has been a rollercoaster ride. The point of television is to entertain, and this season has done that in extraordinary fashion.

As for season 4… I literally have no clue what will happen. The only possible thing I can fathom is that Root will be trying to work her way to try and shut down Samaritan while the others stay hidden. All that I am sure about is that it is going to be one hell of a ride.

Below you can vote for your favourite episode of the season.

  1. Nice write up Brad. The show really went above & beyond what folks would've expected (atleast what I would've expected) in the third season. It's a crime to be this good on a network like CBS!

Also, you'll be glad to know that as of this Wednesday, the writers have kicked off work on Season 4.

When this series started and the intro said it was about helping ordinary people, I totally bought in. Now it's about AIs. I guess all the stories about ordinary people have been used up. The characters that I loved have faded into the background. Root, who was a marvelous little psychopath, has become the good girl and the Voice of the Machine. I disliked nearly all of Season 3, and I won't be watching Season 4. And oh, yes, the cheerleaders will say it's because I'm too stupid to follow complex plots. The truth is, all good science fiction is based on the characters (see "Doctor Who") and the characters as currently drawn on Person of Interest no longer interest me. My little Facebook group for the POI sharkwatch is growing every week - the fins are circling.

Very hard to choose a favourite episode since pretty much every episode this season has been flawless... I guess it's between Devil's Share and Deus Ex Machina. This season has been above anything else in network TV and certainly one of the best shows currently on TV. The addition of Root and Shaw as regulars has made this show much better and really softened the blow of Carter's death for me.

  5. Great summary, Bradley.

Best episode: "The Devil's Share" hands down. The opening sequence using Johnny Cash's "Hurt" was a beautifully flawless montage in which words were not necessary. I could have watched the entire episode with nothing but various pieces of music guiding the narrative and characters' actions. To top it off, the ending with Elias was among the series' best; his speech on the "outliers" was chillingly indelible and easily one of Elias' most compelling moments.

Worst episode: "Last Call." Hey, at least "Provenance" was a little fun.

    Best scene: Carter's death. :(

Best Reese moment: believing Daniel Casey and letting him live in "RAM," demonstrating the stark contrast between himself and Dillinger but also indicating how Reese has always been a genuine person looking to do the right thing.

Best Finch moment: sacrificing himself to Decima in order to free Grace. :(

Best Fusco moment: getting justice for Carter by catching Simmons (after kicking his ass!) while also illustrating the powerful impact Carter had on him as a person.

Best Shaw moment: expressing her initial skepticism about killing Congressman McCourt when she would have casually done so a few months earlier, thus symbolizing the positive influence that working with Reese and Finch has had on her. Great character development for Shaw in that scene.

Best Root moment: discussing the Machine's intent, humanity, and Cyrus' (the POI of "/") belief in a "greater plan" with Finch, which began to shape Root into a more multi-faceted character who wasn't merely executing the Machine's will but also starting to adapt a distinct philosophy and question her place in the universe. The dialogue and Amy Acker's delivery were superb.

Can't wait for the Blu-ray to be released so I can re-watch the whole season. =D

  6. The Devil's Share and Deus ex Machina are just must-see TV !

  7. Can't vote for any of these cuz season 3 sucked. It's now the Shaw show, and I'm no longer interested in watching.

  8. I have the exact opposite feeling. POI started as a perfectly serviceable procedural, but this kind of storytelling can only get you so far if you don't want your show to turn into CSI: Precog or NCIS: NY Future. This show has slowly turned into an Orwellian thriller where both point of views concerning security through surveillance have perfectly valid arguments.

As for the characters, I don't really see it, except for Fusco who's simply not as involved with the Machine storyline, they all had brilliant moments about their beliefs, doubts and principles. Root's just as fun as ever, but she was a remorseless killer just two seasons ago, so she had to evolve a little or her implication in the Team would simply make much less sense.

So, that's my opinion: that the show has gotten better with each season, and I can't wait to see what season 4 will bring.

  9. I can see why some people haven't thought this season was as good as the first or second. They have gone a little off the "the government considers these people irrelevant. We don't." bit recently. But the AI story has ALWAYS been there, it's just been simmering in the background. They've brought it front and centre and I love it. But I appreciate that it's not why some watch the show.

  10. Your English is great (compared to some of the people that live in England, your English is rather spectacular). I can agree with all of those awards.

  11. Cheers. I think I have watched the Elias scene about 150 times. One of the greatest scenes I've ever seen. Enrico Colantoni was awesome (fun fact - when they rehearsed that, David Valcin who plays Scarface had to read Elias's lines - because Colantoni was filming elsewhere - so he was reading Elias's lines as well as acting himself).

Provenance bored me. Last Call was at least a little tense. And they set up a new potential recurring villain (though they still haven't brought back Alistair Wesley from 2.07 yet, so I doubt this villain will be back anytime soon).

I can agree wtih the rest though.

  12. Person of Interest's Deus Ex Machina > LOST's.

  13. Bradley, thank you for this review. I really adore this show and have watched it from the very beginning. I am really looking forward to next season. As for choosing a favourite episode, that is really hard as there were so many great ones. I would have to say the final five episodes were totally brilliant, plus the one with the 911 operator and the young boy who was kidnapped. I also enjoyed the episodes when Carter went after and took down HR. I am upset however, that she was killed off as I really loved the character. Thanks again for a great review.

  17. Best episode: Deus Ex Machina and The Devil’s Share. Honourable mentions: RAM, Death Benefit, A House Divided, Beta.
Best scene: The opening sequence in The Devil’s Share set to ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash. The end narrative by Root in Deus Ex Machina set to ‘Exit (For A Film)’ by Radiohead. The end sequence in
Death Benefit set to ‘Medicine’ by Daughter.
Best Reese moment: Reese taking on the SWAT team in the motel in The Devil’s Share set to ‘Miami Showdown’ by Digitalism. Reese’s flashback in The Devil’s Share.
Best Finch moment: Bridge scene (Beta).
Best Fusco moment: Fusco saying goodbye to his son (The Crossing).
Best Shaw moment: Shaw saving Fusco’s son (The Crossing).
Best Root moment: Root turning the tables on Control (Aletheia).

Season 3 has been the best season IMO. Looking forward to more mayhem and chaos in season 4.

  18. Thanks for the review! Person of Interest, with it's transition from a procedural format to a serialized one has become one of the best shows on TV and I'm proud to say I'm a PoI fan. Don't recall loving a show so much since I fell in love with Castle & Fringe. My Top 3 episodes:
    - Devil's Share
    - Deus Ex Machina
    - The Crossing

  19. "RAM (The hardcore fans episode)"

Couldn't agree with you more. The execution of it was a thing of beauty. It's my second favorite episode of the season (Following Devil's Share).

  20. I disagree about the "filler episodes" appearing more times than one would hope. This season had by far the fewest. While this season had some weaker ones it was HEAVILY serialized eps 5-12(and even some of 4C) were all part the on going plot and then after two "filler episodes" from RAM on the show jumps back to the overarching storylines. This season had by far the most serialized story.
