    He's the one that owed Capt. Montgomery a favor and therefore he was supposed to keep Beckett safe from Bracken with the file of damning info (the file mentioned in SP #2).

    I knew it!! When he "died" in After the Storm, and they just covered him with a sheet in the hospital, I said to my husband, "He's not really dead.." Excellent continuity and story development. Well done, Mr. Marlowe!

    Too think smith was dead is everyone's personal opinion i actualy never thought he was dead so its a clever use of him now too take down bracken good job from the writers for this.

    Sorry, I disagree. "Smith was dead" isn't a personal opinion - that was the canon up till this SP. The show had never ever bothered to look behind who he was, why did he died so abruptly, etc. He is somebody coming back from death. Nobody cares about what you think or I think - I'm talking about what the show suggests the characters should think.


    Regarding originality: I can be too demanding but I expect from the showrunners to try to be original, and at least do not use the same hackneyed card twice in one season. The "nothing is original" is the lame excuse for the talentless "creatives".

    I always tought Smith wasn´t dead (we never saw his body) and I think it´s very clever to use him at this point (probably the JB closure).
    And about originality - yes, you are being too demanding, IMO! After all, after decades and tons of shows, it´s pratically impossible to come with something that has never used. May I suggest you try to writte something original and submit it to the networks?:) And don´t take this as an offense, I´m kidding:)

    Long answer, be prepared :)

    1) I don't take it as an offense, but at the same time I can tell when my car is broken even though I can't repair it - if only those people could tell their opinion about anything on the internet who have proven that they are among the better pros, 99,9% of the comments on all forums and boards should have been deleted instantly. (Yeah, the "OMG I love this" ones too, because what does it worth if they are noob to the topic?)

    2) Smith's death: please watch the episode again: we saw him on his hospital bed, surrounded by the (a?) hospital team and THEY stated that he had a probable heart attack and THEY couldn't save him, his face is covered only after this. He was taken unconsciously to the emergency hospital on shift. Now of course it could have happened that Smith (who was a just wealthy law firm executive, not some shady, multiple-secret-identity operative, he doesn't even have an alias) had an accomplice response team in stash who stepped into action as soon as they got to know that their master was attacked, had hacked the police network and dispatched the cop on guard, appeared as the hospital team and faked his death, then made all the fake paperwork with his death and then nobody (not even the most interested potential target) ever cared to checked how could that happened with the most important living witness of a life-or-death case. My question is: if it happened in a show neutral to you - would you think it as clever writing or not?

    3) Originality. Music has been composed not for sixty but for thousands of years on the same limited set of notes, yet every day thousands of musicians try to serve the same notes in an up till then unprecedented way. And nobody says to a 13-a-dozen number that it's great and they can't do better, 'cause all the tunes have been played before. But let's make a deal: instead of "original" use the "intuitive" or "creative". I criticised the specific plot turn and when the answer to a critic is that "everybody does that", it means that the core of the critic was spot on.

    4) The specific plot: Since Bobby Ewing came out of the shower, resurrected characters have had a bad stink of creative failure. But just like everything else, the idea isn't a bad thing in itself, it can be a good plot twist, but only with conditions. The first and foremost condition which differentiates the cheap, Z-category twists from a potentially (only potentially!) good turn is that the mere existence of the character has to make a difference. The most obvious example is an heir believed to be dead. It changes the existing situation around the characters no matter what the exact actions of the "living dead" will be.
    In case of Smith it is not true. He is unimportant as a character. He is just a deus ex machina, who appears just in the right moment tho offer the Antiochian Holy Grenade to the hapless heroes. (Monty Python, for those who are too young.)

    "With his resorces" (sorry, the previous comment, not yours, but it's easier to collect my arguments to one post) doesn't mean anything without the character who should use those resources. There were absolutely no sign (not even a hint) that Smith would have wanted to be the Lone Vengeance. Would he want to use his resources to bring down Bracken he had a year (and a phonecall to Beckett) to serve him on a silver plate. So I can buy (with a lot of reservation, but can) that he used that year to build up a fake identity and the emergency fake-death-team in case he is attacked. It's meh and all, but OK, he wanted to be sure to survive. But what they served in the SP was that he didn't planned to hide and survive, but to bring down Bracken - for which he would have had the perfect chance while he had the files.

    It's the crappy writing - big theatrics, but the characters act stupid (more: elaborately plan to act stupid!) as a stone.

    After point 2) I stopped reading:) Why? Because I don´t need to rewatch the episode (I´ve watched it a few times and I was blessed with a great memory), so we´ll never agree...yes, the people surrounding him said that, but no, I never saw his face being covered, I saw it already covered! So, I always believed he faked his death. You don´t agree? Fine, it´s your opinion, but if you read some opinions (in this and other sites) you´ll see a lot of people think like me:)
    So, yeah, we´ll never agree, and honestly I don´t like your negativity before even watching any episode:(

    LOL, in this case I'm in a much luckier position. I have a very bad memory, so I took the time and watched that scene before started to argue about it. I hope I remembered well to what I had seen only half a minute before.

    "before even watching any episode" - SP-s are sent out to create a feeling about what to come. That sneak peak created this impression in me. Blame on ABC. (I don't even want to mention how many times I read this very same ultima ratio after the SP-s and then the episode was exactly the same good or bad.)

    I think I will need to go back and rewatch. Judging by the comments I must have forgotten something cause i dont remember him dying. Shows what an impact the story line had on me :) Lets hope this is the end of this story line once and for all.
