Arrow - Marc Guggenheim Interview

TVLINE | You’ve had a string of episodes that could have easily served as the season finale. How will the actual finale top them?
We’re always trying to top ourselves. We always have said we’re never going to take our foot off the gas, we’re never going to hold back stuff at the beginning of the year just to save it for the end and we’re not going to hold back stuff for a [later] season when we could do it this season. We’re always about pushing as much story as we can, as fast as we can. Worrying about timing and worrying about topping ourselves, that’s what we call a “future us” problem. Our best episodes always find a new gear for the show, and I do think the finale finds a new gear. It’s exciting because we’re trying some very emotionally complex stuff along with some stunts and sequences that are the biggest we’ve ever done on the show.

TVLINE | Slade has been going after Oliver in a very personal way, but now it’s of a bigger scope. What will the emotional toll be like for Oliver in the finale?
For Oliver, it all comes down to [the fact that] he made this vow for himself at the beginning of the season that he would not kill anymore. That vow is going to be sorely tested. It was always part of our design of the season that we would basically place Oliver in a situation where he has every reason, tactically and vengeance-wise and necessity-wise, to kill again. At least one character during the finale will make this argument that if Oliver had not been so reluctant to kill, perhaps everything that’s been happening for the last couple episodes would not have happened. That only further complicates his moral dilemma.

TVLINE | In the promo pics, Slade has Felicity and Laurel. Does that give Oliver a moment where he has an emotional epiphany about either of one of those characters?
As Oliver learned, Slade is determined to kill the person he loves the most. Obviously, those images suggest that it could be Laurel or it could be Felicity. And I would be very foolish if I were to share the answer with you.

  2. Doesn't really say anything new. I'm worried about their plan for Felicity in the finale. It seems like they're going to reveal she is related to Oliver or something equally rage inducing.

  3. Think either Thea or Laurel will be abducted by Malcolm or Slade respectivly. Felicity won't die. No major character will, somene just won't be there at the begginig at seaon 3.

This final should be epic and I like they are closing the story with some cliffhangers lingering over season 3 but nothing groundbreaking like VD or other show make it.

  4. I'll settle for something equally rage inducing if it means avoiding "they're going to reveal she is related to Oliver." Once is enough with that.

  5. If there is one thing Arrow does too often it is repeating itself. I really hope they can come up with a better villain motivation than a dead loved one for S2.

I think the person he loves the most should be Thea. Please no fan pandering to the shippers. It would make sense if it's Felicity or Laurel.

  7. I think Thea will just go with Malcolm. Slade would have to go through Malcolm to get to Thea and he'd be wasting his time.

it won't make sense for Sara to died since the 5 year is not over yet and there still a lot of flashback left to do...........I think Isabel will be the only death

  10. I think there will be a Sara "death" (the girl has as many lives as a cat), at least in how Oliver will perceive it on the island. But in reality Sara will be rescued by Nyssa (Lazarus Pit maybe). And in season 3 we can see flashback to Sara with the LOA.

did the EP say they will a death to a main character? Don't see any of the main character dying beside Slade, and likely Isabel will died instead of sara based on the promo......

  12. Not really but Oliver believed Sara died on the island and i think we will see that in finale. At some point Oliver has to leave the island at some point to go to Russia. I think this would be the way to do it. They said a major player wont be present for the beginning of season 3. But that could mean anyone from Sara, Laurel, Slade, Thea might leave Starling for a while. They never said anybody of the major players was dying just that at the start of season 3 someone will be missing.
