  1. I like how they keep talking about redemption for Ward. Now that he's away from his abuser, he has to figure out who he is. And redemption and forgiveness should not be easy. It's going to be a long journey. But I believe he can do it.

But there needs to be lots of apologies. Ward needs a shitload of therapy, too, because he's dealing with thirty years of physical, emotional, and definitely sexual abuse. I'm pretty convinced he was raped at some point before the Lorelei situation (thus the non-reaction, which worries me, and I need that to be brought up again).

  2. The Winter Soldier has done things that are far more heinous than anything Grant Ward has ever done as far as we know, and yet, at the end of the movie, you're rooting for him to come back on the side of the angels.

Yeah but TWS was brainwashed, and his memory completely wiped. He literally had no control over his actions like not even a bit. So I don't buy the comparison one bit.

  3. Ward brainwashed. That's when thirty years of non-stop abuse does to a person. He had no agency and literally could not function when Garrett stopped giving him orders. That's why he fell apart so fast and got a little too gross with Skye and May (seriously, apologize for that).

No excuse for his actions, though. But he does need help, just like Bucky does.

  4. Oh, he definitely needs to take responsibility for his actions. Jail time and therapy should hopefully help with that.

But Garrett was abusing and manipulating him too (which Bill Paxton admitted to in several interviews) just like his family. I don't even think Ward's realized it yet.

  5. I still say Ward should be a frenemy for Coulson's team. Explore his damaged psyche more, have him express regret for his past actions, all that stuff is fine - but keep him a grey character, loyal to neither SHIELD nor HYDRA but only himself. There's just no way a full-on redemption, with the Epic Love of SkyeWard conquering all (barf), is going to fly.
Random, tangential comment: the question about whether Billy Koenig might be Eric's LMD rather than his brother reminded me of my suspicions about Victoria Hand's death. We know now that Ward is definitely not a triple agent and didn't fake her death to win Garrett's loyalty... but what if she, suspecting that Ward is HYDRA and wanting to test that theory, put an LMD of herself on that plane? Maybe she allowed everyone to believe she's dead for the same reason Fury did? Maybe I'm reaching, but when the producers won't even say with absolute certainty that GARRETT is dead, anything is possible.

  6. Well, he hasn't really said anything indicating sexual abuse, but his actions do. The fact that he said his parents were "worse" than his brother set off alarm bells, and I thought I was being paranoid at the time.

However, I couldn't shake that feeling and then we saw the way he interacted with May and Skye in the finale. While disgusting, that set off set alarm bells with several other people who are speculating that he was possibly taught that behavior, as in it was done to him. And then again, the non-reaction to Lorelei, which could just be the show not realizing, but I think it's more than that. Especially with the way they've handled Ward's abuse so far.

  7. I say Ward deserves a chance to redeem himself..... everybody deserves a second chance...... Ward has had a difficult upbringing which does not excuse his behaviour but gives us a sliver of a reason to forgive Ward..... but i agree it should be a long and hard journey for him to come back to the team...... but come back to the team he should!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ward is totally unaware...... he is going to have a tough time coming into himself without Garrett their to guide him its going to interesting to see.... We already saw a glimpse of it when Ward needed orders..... he seemingly could not function without them!!... At that moment you knew that he could not make real decisions for himself!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't think he does, thought. But let's assume I'd be open to it, today it still dépends on one thing: In which state Fitz will be next season! If his mind is damaged by those events, then I'm sorry, but Ward can go rot in his jail!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm sure Fitz will have numerous obstacles to overcome at first, but he'll eventually recover. And I hope Ward apologizes profusely to FitzSimmons too.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wouldn't really called that brainwashed, it's more like he didn't knew better. But he should have known better, the team gave him plenty of opportunities, and he didn't took them! Fitz in particular believed in him, and now who knows in which state the poor guy will be next season!

So, no, I don't believe in his redemption, not when he nearly killed the two most adorable characters on the show and likely damaged one of them!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh I believe that FitzSimmons is stronger now than before and Ward has alot of apologizing to do......

    ReplyDelete
  13. I want Ward to be redeemed and I'm not a fan of that comparison either. Ward was brainwashed. Bucky was basically brain-jacked. Not really the same thing.

Ward never really had the opportunity to be his own person. Jed and Maurissa's experience on Dollhouse gives me some hope that they'll explore that in an interesting way.

  14. He was pretty vicious, that goes beyond acceptable IMO. He was a cocky as***le while fighting May, pushing her buttons and when he was nailed to the floor he switched and tryed to appeal to her good side saying "May..." and bam, kick in the neck.
He was a manipulative bastard up until the very end. He is seriously narcisistic. Just watch his little speech to May when he was acusing her of bein the mole.
You are very very right, he enjoyed being a prick, he thought he was above the rest of them, that he was better than them eventually using the "mission" excuse, but he enjoyed it.
I think he can't be redeemed either.

    ReplyDelete
  15. HAS FURY USED SOME ALIEN JUICE ON FITZ?????
He said he had a whole medical team working on him, that he wouldn't be the same again, bla bla, is he doing a Coulson-like procedure on FItz and that is the reason there was no shot if Fitz being treated and nobody was allowed to go to him?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yep he really loved hurting them and its the way he did it and what he did to FitzSimmons I just don't think any of the team will be able to forgive him for that even if he ends up helping them or saving their lives his betrayal is way too strong to be easily fixed.

First of all, I hope they keep Trip, Agent of Adorable, as a permanent team member. Come on, upgrade that guy to a series regular! As for Ward, he needs therapy and jailtime, but most of all he needs to figure out WHO Grant Ward is, and he needs to do it for himself (which is why I'd be equally happy if decided that fuck it all, he's gonna be a HYDRA overlord, at least that'd be his own decision). I'm really excited to learn more about Skye - and Raina, too! - and about who she is. Inhuman perhaps? A Skrull in disguise? (I'd sell a kidney for the inclusion of Inhumans.)

  18. Whats with this whole Ward redemption loop people seem to be stuck on. I get that people liked the character. But he was a double agent, made poor choices yes he was bullied/brainwashed by Garrett but that is not a total excuse. It just proves he was easily manipulated. But he knew what he was doing was wrong, he knew Garrett was going off the deepend but he still stayed even when he he had multiple oppertunities to walk away. He had choices, he could have stayed with the good guys, come clean to Coulson, switched sides, but he didnt. And lets not conveniently forget that he killed/murdered people. Nearly killed Fitz and Simmons, yes he felt a twinge of guilt about it, but he didnt do anything to stop it. I would have had more respect for him if he had left a trail that would have lead to their rescue or something. But he didnt. He left them to die. Didn't even look back.

So he should pay for his crimes. End of story. I really dont want them to head down this whole redemption line they keep bringing up if it means he is welcomed back into S.H.I.E.L.D. anytime soon.

I'm all for the character turning up as a bad guy again, possibly they need information from him about Hydras setup and plans. And I would be all for him realising he worked for the wrong side and coming to terms with what he has done. I really would be fine with either option.

But I would not be okay with him suddenly switching sides now. So he says sorry spends a few months in jail then is all is forgiven. Or all is forgiven because he has useful intel. I for one would be really pi**ed off if he was brought back into the team for any reason in season 2.

I think Ward could be used as bait to take down the rest of HYDRA.......a sacrifice lamb for the greater good?

I'm all in for a Ward redemption arc, I'm not going to deny that, but it should be at least a whole season long and he should be used for whatever knoledge he has on HYDRA, specially since he shouldn't have any problema with it because he of what he said to Garrett about them being a means to an end, and all that. He's obviously not HYDRA, and he was only loyal to Garrett and himself, so he shouldn't have any problem fessing up about whateve it is that he knows about them. That said, I'd rather he stayed in the grey, sort of free agent, you know? Brett Dalton was so great at playing his moraly anbiguous self.

  23. Victoria Llanos16 May 2014 at 01:03

I really hope so! I was so not a Fitz fan for most of the season, but the past three/four episodes made me love him, and I don't want mentally impared Fitz I want quirky, loyal Fitz back. Besides, it would be cool to see how his superior brain deals with it and all. Maybe he processes things diferently than Skye and Coulson... I don't know, I just really want him back without a scratch on him now that I've leraned to apreciate him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes leaving him in the grey area would be so much better for the character and give Brett Dalton so much more scope to explore. Because he was more into following Garrett than the HYDRA manifesto.

But as for coming back into SHIELD I realy dont see how they could bring him back and justify it considering what he has done, becasue there are things he has done you cant reason away or justify.

But I could see them having to work with him for some reason, either info he has or some reason they need to bring him along on a mission, then that could cause some very interesting interactions and conflicts. and if they handle it well without getting soapy then it could make for some great character development.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh I hope not. That would be overkill of a plot device. They use it on Coulson, and make it a massive plot secret, when its revealed they have to break in and steal it to save Skye, Garrett steals ALL of it and uses it on himelf and comes back from the dead (for a few seconds *g*) if they use it on Fitz it will be a massive waste of a plot line, for the Fitz character and the most overused secret serum ever. Plus it would water down the Coulson plot line with the alien writting.

I think it would be a great plot line for the Fitz character if he has to recover and fight his way back to health. It would give them so many areas to explore with the character and his relationship with Simmons and the others. And Fury could use some other technology on Fitz something that would bring something new to the show. Rather than dossing everyone with the serum.

There is a risk to the serum remember and Coulson is starting to show signs. Garrett showed signs quicker because he used a massive dose of it. And the last of it. They cant keep finding more of the stuff to fix people especially if they are now developing a sideline about its side effects on Coulson. That would be half of the team infected. But then I dont think it is going to influence Skye in the same way as Coulson, because as we are going to find out she isnt exactly human to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes I'm all for the character turning up agian. But not the whole
turning to the good side idea. He was misslead by Garrett and made the
wrong choices. but he did make those choices despite the ways out he had
time and again. And he did he chose to murder people for Garrett he
chose to dump Fitz and Simmons in the sea. He chose to kill Koenig and
Hand in cold blood. He enjoyed taunting May and if had gotten the upper
hand in that fight I am in no doubt he would have killed her without a
    second thought.

He chose the wrong side. Yes he may not have seen any other option at the time. And Garrett manipulated him when he was vulnerable that much is obvious. But it does not give him an out for his actions. And I am sorry apologizing is not going to cut it seriously, he can show remorse thats fine, but it still does not give
him an out for what he has done. It doesnt work that way. Plenty of criminals appologize for their actions or have abusive pasts it doesn't mean they get to walk away if they say sorry and go through a few months of therapy. Otherwise our jails would be half empty. He murdered people in cold blood, a sorry and I was abused just wont cut it I'm affraid.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes he did give of that air of enjoying goading May. I am in no doubt that if he had won that fight he woud have killed her.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes I am all for the frenemy idea. I could live with that and it could bring some great tension to the show. And give the actor a chance to really round out the character. I agree full on redemption is not going to fly. And god please dont go down the love conquers all route..that would be beyond lame And it would so make a joke of what has transpired in season 1.

And like you I'm so not convinced Hand is dead. I was always waiting for her to pop up again. I was delighted that they didnt go down the whole Ward is a tripple agent thing because when he shot Hand that is where I thought they were going and I was a bit dissapponted. But at the same time I wasnt convinced she was actually dead. and I'm still not convinced.

I was delighted with the finale because they didn't whimp out on a few of the story lines and go for the simple fix or plot twist. I fully expected the love conquers all storyline or the tripple agent one. I think where they went was so much better for all the characters. It leaves so many areas to explore. Damaged or moraly compromised characters are always so much more interesing and compelling to watch if they handle it corectly. Thats why I hope there is no quick cure for Fitz I want to see what they could do with the character if he has to overcome difficulties. How it affect him and the others. The same goes for Ward he is far more interesting now than he was as the stoic good guy.

It's like Coulson and the writing at the end of the episode and Skye with her parents. The more questions we are given about the characters the more interesting it becomes as long as they dont overplay it.

It gives the actors a chance to flex their acting muscles and give us so much more.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, I'd rather they save him some other way. If they use it on Fitz half of the team will have been injected with the GH. Too common.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The problem with Ward is that he's not naturally evil, he's just weak. Which is ironic seeing as he did most of the horrible things he did trying not to be seen as weak. But someone that can't think for themselves and needs someone else to give them orders, even if that person is a deranged lunatic, is someone that can't be redeemed in my opinion. Ward was like 17 when he met Garret, old enough to know better. I would like him more if he was genuinely a bit evil, but he's just spineless.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah it waters down the plot line to much. Everyone will be watching everyone else for signs they are loosing it *g*

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's how I see it as well. I haven't seen CA: TWS yet but I take it Bucky was basically a guinea pig. He had no control over his actions and was used as a pawn by HYDRA. Ward was manipulated and emotionally abused by Garrett, no doubt, but it's not the same thing. He still had a choice, a tough one perhaps but a choice nonetheless. And he chose evil. I can feel sorry for him because of his past but that doesn't necessarily make him redeemable. He's responsible for the things he's done, unlike Bucky.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree, I don't want the GH-325 plot device to become overused. It shouldn't be a magical solution every time a team member is in peril.

Even though I don't doubt that it would be sad and painful to watch, I too would like to see an actual storyline of Fitz dealing with what happened. If he suffers some kind of damage and has to deal with a disability, that could be a good plot with a lot of depth. TV rarely tackles this subject matter and when they do, they tend to magically "fix" the character (e.g. Bobby on Supernatural, Michael on Nikita).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Free agent/"grey" Ward is what I'm hoping for. That way, we get the best of both worlds: we still get to see him work and interact with the team sometimes, if they happen to have a common goal, but there's no redemption and no one is gonna forgive the guy or trust him again. Plus, like you said I think making the character ambiguous and tough to pin down would give Brett more goos material to work with. These types of characters are the most interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Exactly. It would be nice to see and actual progression of recovery. Plus they cant have a magical fix for everything then it just lessens the impact when something special does happen. It also takes away any actual fear or tension if a character is injured because it becomes "oh they can just fix him" plot line.
