The Originals - Review of Episode 1.19 - An Unblinking Death

R.I.P. Kieran. This week’s episode said goodbye to Kieran as he died twice. Despite Cami’s desperate efforts to save her uncle, Klaus was forced to kill Kieran to save her life. Across New Orleans, the wolves were attacked by one of their own. Oliver wanted to trick the wolves into starting a war, but his plan had some deadly consequences. Hayley, very pregnant, very emotional and very pissed off, went to visit Marcel thinking he had something to do with the attack. Marcel refuted a theory I’ve had from the beginning, that he was the one who killed Hayley’s parents. I have a feeling this is going to be a storyline they’ll be delving into next season. No witches this week, not counting Genevieve’s brief appearance, and just like last week, Klaus and Elijah argued again but made up at the end of the episode.

Favorite scene: I think I speak for many of us when I say the best scene of this week’s episode was the goodbye scene between Cami and Kieran. I’m going to ignore the fact that he tried to kill her later (just like I’m still ignoring the HIMYM finale). The scene was so heartbreaking. Kieran was Cami’s last family member (I think) and to lose him exactly the way she lost her brother must have been horrible. She thought that because she knew what was going on this time around, that she’d be able to stop it. I like that he wanted to protect her from seeing him deteriorate. Too bad he didn’t know about the mark returning. I’m sure if he had, he would have taken his own life before he could hurt her.

Most badass scene: A few weeks ago I asked for more badass Hayley scenes, well I got it. She was mad enough to walk into a bar filled with vampires, kick Diego off his chair (which is my new favorite moment of the season) and stab him with a wooden stake (while still surrounded by vampires). I really thought Diego was toast here.
Grossest scene: Kieran biting off his fingers would have to be the most disgusting thing I’ve seen on this show to date (a kitchen knife is one thing, but biting them off… yuk). Even Josh’s only reaction was “Holy...”, which let’s face it, will always be a weird thing to say for a vampire, regardless of whether or not he’s in a church.

Best moment of friendship: I’m going to combine two friendships here. Considering the size of his ego, it must have taken a lot for Klaus to call Marcel. The fact that he knew Cami needed Marcel more than him was a huge step for him. Which brings me to Marcel and Cami. I love their friendship (with or without benefits). I’m glad she had him to lean on, since I guess Kieran was Marcel’s friend as well. I hope they can show more of their friendship, preferably without a romantic relationship (at least in the beginning). Also I'd like to give a little shoutout to the friendship between Cami and Josh. They were great this week.
Worst character: Oliver, of course. Probably one of the dumbest characters on this show to date. Considering how many bombs were hidden, how could he have possibly thought there wouldn’t be any casualties. Then he decides for Eve about whether or not Elijah can give him her blood to save her, saying she’d rather be dead. Totally not his call. And then he actually kills her. Hayley totally figured out what happened at the end of the episode by the way.

Best quotes
Kieran: “The city is full of monsters.” Josh: “Uh, yeah. Trust me, I know. Remind me to never piss off a witch.”
Elijah: “To our victory, brother.”
Josh: “Dude, be cool. He’s just a priest hexed by a witch. Accept that these things are real, then forget them. I mean later, you forget them later. Crap, ah! Ok, let me start over.”

So I’ve figured out what’s been off these past few episodes. It’s the dynamic between the siblings. I’m hoping it’s going to get better now that they are no longer fighting, but I miss Rebekah. When she was still around there were always at least two siblings united. The Originals is missing it’s female touch. Anyway, that’s it for “An Unblinking Death”. Check in again next week, I’m going to try to be a little earlier since I don’t have many classes (emphasis on try). Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode.

  1. I was hoping for a much better story for Oliver. They've made him completely unredeemable. I doubt he'll make it past the finale.

Missed opportunity for a psycho vamp Kieran. I would have loved a few eps of that, plus I think he should have turned Cami, too.

Klaus and Marcel's relationship has alot of layers to it. I think Klaus is still jealous of Marcel.

  3. "When she was still around there were always at least two siblings united." When was that? Elijah, Klaus & Marcel were working together briefly but Rebekah wanted to undermine them the entire time because she was mad at Marcel for using her once again and dumping her the first chance she got and she'd been working against Klaus & Elijah's plan (the deal the two of them made with Sophie and some of the other witches) to claim the city back from Marcel since she arrived in town.

I think Rebekah needed a storyline of her own while she was on the show. She obviously didn't really care about the power-struggle going on in NOLA at all so she didn't fit into what Klaus, Elijah & Marcel were doing but the writers never really gave her a storyline of her own (I think it's because they knew that Claire wasn't going to remain on the show - so they just had her babysitting Hayley and plotting against Klaus that way her leaving really didn't impact any of the main characters or their story-lines).

They've totally lost me with Oliver. I was starting to like him a bit because he didn't worship Hayley and had no interest in following this girl who he just met but after blowing up his friends and murdering Eve I just can't like him anymore. Jackson was way more likable in this episode for me though - this is the first time I've actually liked him in an episode.

I was referring to when Klaus and Rebekah worked together to get Elijah back, or when Elijah was on Rebekah's side when Klaus went after her. Yes, there was a lot of fighting (too much if you ask me) but two of them were united.

And I agree about Rebekah needing a storyline. The writers treated her horribly

I doubt Oliver will even make it to the finale

And I agree about a missed opportunity for vamp Kieran. Totally thought they were going to go there for a minute.

  6. There has been too many things "off" past few episodes. This one is third in a row that I didn't like (at all). Chaos, shallow and underdone "plots" and "twist", poor direction - the werewolves for example looked like a pack of beaten puppies, stumbling over the camp, Elijah just helplessly watching them doing nothing, Oliver like a pompous idiot and the other "Charming" incompetent of any lead just the same. VERY disappointed with the wolves storyline in general so I am not even interested in any "family secret", I just don't feel anything there.
Good thing there was no Monique, the witch gives me goose bumps.
Seeing Genevieve just reminds me of the wasted potential she once had.
    I missed Davina.
Klaus was Klaus - not bad but I've seen him this way too many times.
Father Kieran... Sorry, it has been done before (and played better!) - double, tripple death, exactly the same scenario like with Alaric, Katherine. They drag it that long that I just wish someone would kill him and we could move on.
They just keep trying to use the same tvd-tricks (that don't work anymore).
I could stop watching (and spare everyone my complaints ;) but I'm still mourning the first half of the season (which kept me on my toes) and trying to wrap my mind around where everything went wrong (and it has NOTHING to do with Rebekah's departure).
Sad, I had a hope we would get at least one decent season...:(

  7. I think Oliver is supposed to be in the finale - at least the actor is supposed to appear in 1x22 (which is the next episode he's listed for).
