The Mentalist - Episode 6.19 - Brown Eyed Girls - Review

The case of the week was pretty intriguing. Jane was the first to understand there was something going on after the moment he bumped into that drunk man - in fact, later it's discovered he was helping a near-to-death blonde woman to be better. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. It turns out there's a whole creepy truth behind this: someone very sick is abducting girls for the illegal traffic of human bodies. However, Jane, Lisbon and Cho ad least managed to save one of the girls, Daniella, who has been hidden in an underground box. Lisbon promised her she will do anything to save her sister's life, who's only 16, but I think this case is far from being over. Anyway, when Jane and Lisbon found the blonde girl, Jane was there, begging her to stay alive - like a good shepard, he's there to support one of his sheep till the end. In this occasion, the music on the main theme turned a little angst. Classic Jane knows how to bring a drunk man his memory back: he did the same thing back in season 5, and he managed successfully, with the help of Wiley's technology. However, by the end of the episode, it became clear the team will be facing a new threath and a new enemy in the next episodes.

The situation between Jane and Lisbon has become more awkward, and I think this is just the beginning before the two realize they need to talk about them together. The first time Jane tries to call Lisbon, she's on a date with Pike, but she refuses his call. Basically because she's having a serious conversation with him about D.C... a date that he seems not aware she was having. Lisbon accuses Jane he's ruining her night calling him 'jerk'. It's like she wants to find an excuse to fight with him and see his reaction. Jane just want her to trust him, because one of the main features in their relationship has been the trust they have in each other. The second time Jane interrups Lisbon and Pike is when the couple are about to have lunch. Then Lisbon meets Abbott on her way, who tells her he's known about Pike's promotion in D.C. Since Abbott started to like Jane and being kinda his 'buddy', of course he pushs Lisbon to tell Jane about D.C.. "He's a psychic", "A pretend psychic." How many times have Lisbon been told "there's no such things as psychics"? Coming from the man who months ago did everything to stop Jane from killing Red John, and in front of Lisbon called Jane as "your boyfriend", this is a big growth for Abbott's character. Also, Jane bringing him undercover on the field was a proof of total trust.

Of course Jane can feel the tension between he and Lisbon in the airstream, and I bet even Cho can smell the same atmosphere. I liked how Jane can feel if two people are a couple or not just looking at their intimacy - something he and Lisbon obvisously share in the same scene. Finally, after visiting Daniella at the hospital, Lisbon tells Lisbon about Pike's promotion in DC and the possibility she may go with him. I like the fact that Lisbon points out that Pike is always there for her - does she remember Jane once told her "I'm always gonna save you, Lisbon"? or is she trying to tease him just to have another reaction? Sure, she's stating Jane's gone for 2 years and he wasn't there for her when she needed it. When Jane says that she really likes Pike, Lisbon doesn't answer - she likes Pike but not so much as she expected. If you love someone, you wouldn't skate over the question. Again, she's waiting for his reaction, but Jane is surprised by his own words of "Congratulations", mixed with the feeling of loosing her forever and the growing feeling of love for her. Jane wants Lisbon to be happy, and if she's is, "Then I'm happy." They're both lying: Lisbon rolls her eyes, Jane shrug his shoulder. Also, if Lisbon really loves Pike, she wouldn't need time to think about his offer. She may have found what she wants (Pike, a good guy, who takes her out for dinner, who even plays in a band!), but not what she needs (Jane, a jerk who always messes her up, makes her some good eggs for breakfast, but who can complete her).

Do you think Jane should stop Lisbon or just let her be happy? Share your comments below.

  1. he tries not to be selfish, jane I mean, but probably will tell her in the end - in his own way - how he feels.
There were a bunch of pretty cute scenes in it - lisbon always waiting for one of his typical reactions
I really liked the episode and your review.
    Cho was great too.

  2. The episode was great, I think that Jane's reaction was understandable, I mean, he didn't expect something like that, and I think he needs to metabolize the news even if we can already foresee between his awkward smile and his few words his real reaction; he's speechless and maybe he has really realized that he is losing Lisbon, and the sentence "if you're happy, then I'm happy" suggests how much he truly loves this woman and how much he's really a good man(I think that someone should remind him this more often.) At the other hand, Lisbon totally depends from his reaction, she needs to know what he thinks about her relationship and the look with which she looks at him after have left with Pike is the demonstration that jane is at the center of his heart and thoughts, in fact in the beginning she talks about the proposal to move to DC after have ignored Jane's call, this is not casual. Now is all in Jane's hands, I can't wait for next episode.

  3. I think in that last scene, Lisbon looks kinda disappointed, that Jane didn't react stronger to her telling him she thinks about going to D.C. with Pike. It looks to her like he doesn't really care. And also in the first scene when she tells him, he is a jerk for screwing up her date. I think she just wanted to a get an emotional response from him, like he doesn't want her to leave or to be dating Pike.

  4. Jane is still wearing the wedding ring, he's killed a man with his bare hands, he's buried a guy alive, and his actions have caused several avoidable deaths (season 1, episode 1, for example; also the baseball player last year who had a second gun and killed the officer before being gunned down, himself... Just to name 2). The writers have to address Jane's feeling that he doesn't deserve Lisbon --- for any romantic declaration to be believable at this point. But, that being said, giving the shippers hope for a future relationship is just about all we have time for if this is the last season.

    Just my two cents worth.

  5. Jane you are not happy. Stop Lisbon before you will regread that she's with him and not with you. I love this episode, but Jane at the end....:'( He is so heartbreaking, i can't watch him like this, it hurts. And Lisbon she's probably waiting to Jane say something like, don't go, stay with me.

  6. I think in a way that Lisbon is seeking either Jane's approval, or his protest; by a declaration of his true feelings for her. She WANTS a future with Jane, but will SETTLE for Pike if Jane is too emotionally damaged to ever truely love again.

  7. Excellent review as always, Di! I was nodding my head in agreement throughout.

  8. Thanks for reading! Yes, that's what I think. She wants his reaction, either approval or protest. But Jane is insecure anyway, he doesn't know how to react. He needs to make peace in his heart where he will find the answer.

  9. Thanks for reading! Jane has changed, he's not the selfish man anymore and the only thing he wants is Lisbon to be happy. The best thing for him is realizing she will be happy only with him.

  10. Thanks for reading! As you said, "If you're happy, I'm happy", if you really love someone, you just let him\her go away and be happy. Jane shows his love for Lisbon in this scene, but eventually he's confused by his own reaction and Lisbon's action. Jane needs to take action!

  11. Thanks for reading! As we said, Lisbon wanted some reaction from Jane - either approval or disapproval - she wanted to know what's in his mind. She can't read him, and his reaction in the end of the episode may be misleading and makes Lisbon believe Jane wants her to be happy - with Pike.

  13. I don't really understand why Lisbon is being portrayed this way. It seems so uncharacteristic of the personality she's had for the past 5+ seasons. She was always honest, caring and direct. This "new" Lisbon is smug, hurtful and slightly dishonest. Even if Jane and her work everything out and it all ends well, will we love Lisbon as much as we did before?

  14. Am I the only one to notice that Robin used her left hand to hold her gun? Is this the same injury she suffered at the end of season 5? or something new? Hope she gets better soon.

  15. Thanks for reading! I don't understand why you're saying Lisbon is acting out of character.

  17. Thank you for your very enjoyable reviews each week.
Lisbon always seemed like she would be truthful and upfront. I understand she's conflicted, but it seems she's lying to herself, to Jane and to Pike right now. She also seems so angry with Jane, really sulky and hostile. Never seen that part of her character before.

  18. She's confused and if she seems to act so bad with Jane it's because she wants him to have a reaction. Lisbon expected Jane to be happy or unhappy about Pike's proposal to move to D.C., but he didn't say anything. I think she's a bit disappointed.
