The Americans – 2.08 – New Car – Preview

The Americans second season will continue this Wednesday on FX with an all new episode titled “New Car”. This season has been really great so far, it’s different from season one, the writers are really going deeper into the spy world during the Cold War, and also deeper in the characters psychologies.

Elizabeth and Philip have gone through difficult time with the murders of their friends, it has affected their relationship with the motherland, it questioned their family’ safety. And they also had problems with their children. First, Paige was very suspicious of them, now Henry is breaking in his neighbor’s house to play videogames. In “New Car”, Philip and Elizabeth will find out about him. Poor Henry… But at least, this will give Keidrich Sellati the chance to show how brilliant he is as an actor. I really didn’t expect it from him, but Keidrich Sellati will be very convincing and touching in one scene.
Philip and Elizabeth problems will continue in “New Car”. They both will face with deadly turns in their different missions. There will be deaths, onscreen and offscreen. Of course, those events will once again question where Philip and Elizabeth stand between their missions, the motherland, their family. The question for them is always the same : what comes first ? The mission, the motherland or their lives, their feelings ? It’s the main question of the show, and it’s nicely written in this episode.

Major developments also happened for Nina and Stan. Stan finally let himself fall for Nina and turned away for his wife. They’re not separated yet but it feels like it’s the same. They will share one scene in “New Car” and it will be as cold as usual for those two now.
Nina fell for Oleg, and they’re both onto Stan. Since Nina passed the polygraph last week, Stan will have to give the reports to Oleg. Poor Stan, he has no idea what is really going on. But his mind is busy on something else, he is obsessed with an idea and. Stan will go anywhere, to find the answers he wants to. When I say anywhere I mean D.O.D. and D.O.J.
While Stan is occupied fighting the American bureaucracy, Oleg and Nina will receive bad news from Arkady at the Rezidentura. This will affect especially Oleg and his work. Nina will receive a warning from Arkady, who noticed her affection for Oleg. I don’t know he is jealous or just looking out for her.

But that’s not all, here a list of what you can expect from “New Car” :

• A new car ! Of course ! Philip has been talking about it for weeks, with Henry. Philip will buy it, the face of Elizabeth when he tells her will be priceless. Keri Russell is so funny in that scene. But, what this new car represents for Philip and Elizabeth is really a clever idea of the writers. The symbolic of that car is very interesting, though the episode.
• A surprising and totally unexpected scene, outside of the US, happening in the same time.
• The ARPANET bug from last week is back !
• Martha will have a couple of scenes in “New Car”. She will once again drop a surprising idea for her work, an idea which makes Philip/Clark angry again.
• Someone will be interrogated by Philip and Elizabeth.
• Two characters are back, and I’ve never expected to see them again. One is from the beginning of the season and another one is from last season. But it was nice to see both of them. I’m glad they’re still alive.
• Kate will bring devastating news to Philip and it really affects her. She is very emotial.

“New Car” is a pleasant continuation of The Americans second season, things are moving more rapidly and the Martial Eagle operation will offer an unique chance for Philip and Elizabeth in their fight. Everything is slowly pointing to this operation and it feels like this mission can change everything.

And now, find below a list of some quotes from “New Car” and try to guess who will say them :

“I want you to be happy” “How is it make you feel ?” “It’s not why I’m here” “Don’t worry, it’s not deadly”

So, are you excited about this episode ? Don’t miss it this Wednesday on FX and start talking about it in the comments below !

  3. Thank you Romain. I wonder what the scene outside of the US is. I don't think we've seen that before, just the flashblacks so far.

  5. It sound like a cool episode. Can't believe we're already heading towards the end of the season.

Do we get any development on Oleg/Nina? Like is there any indication of how and when that whole thing began?

  6. Yeah, I think it's the first time there is a scene outside the US, not in flashback.

  7. I won't say who's get interrogated, but it's very good.

Philip and Elizabeth stuff is good, emotional, but it reflects more on their mission than on their couple.

  8. Me too, there is only 5 episodes left.... :( But they are so good.

We'll get some development on Oleg and Nina, but not on how they started their thing.
