  1. A little bit disappointing overall...they made way too much of the stupid blood eagle (did we really need a whole episode about it?) which would have been somewhat okay if anything else had been remotely interesting...did Athelstan even have a line this episode aside from "god safe England"? I also got that Aslaug is "fearful" the last couple of times she said it. And Floki's sudden resentment towards Ragnar came out of nowhere...it would make more sense if Athelstan were still around and Floki felt side-lined, but as it is, it didn't really make much sense. Then all the time used for the built-up of a betrayal which never even remotely happened.
Lagertha was awesome, as always, but that was more or less the only high point of the episode.

  2. Aw at Floki getting married and having a baby. I like that he wasn't exactly happy at first.

LOL at the creepy blood eagle at the end. No thank you.

    Good episode!

  3. I suspected Athelstan's scenes became a victim of the editor then. US version cuts episodes down to the the standard 42 min broadcast to fit more commercials. In unedited form the episode ran a full 50 min

  4. Yeah, I just discovered that the one scene with Ecbert was cut...not surprised the editor went for this one instead of the more useless one with Aslaug explaining yet again how fearful she is. It's strangely homoerotic.
So....Horik made him hope just for kicks? Wow, he really must have hated the guy....

  5. I thought it was an amazing episode myself. The blood eagle was powerful in that it shows a very truly savage part of the Viking society. It also showed just how upset Ragnar was at Borg's betrayal. Remember, if he's going raiding again, he doesn't want any repeats of the attack on his lands and people while he's gone. He needs a powerful example of what happens to anyone who tries it. Since Horik wasn't guarding his back, and expecting him to just sit there and take it, Ragnar needed to have a powerful disincentive for any other earls to think twice before they tried attacks against his people while he's gone.

I confess that I too am puzzled by Floki's sudden surge of resentment against Ragnar (especially since Athelstan is gone and not terribly likely to return), but Athelstan's favor from Ragnar has always been kind of a bee in his bonnet for Floki. Sometimes people can hold on unreasonably to a grudge, no matter what happens later, and snipe at the person they hold responsible, no matter what. I have known people like that. It's sad, since Floki was always one of Ragnar's best supporters and friends. But his friends don't always understand him. He is a deep thinker and a very private man about what he feels, so a lot of the people around him don't always understand why he does what he does. He is a mixture of a Machiavelli and a fierce savage at times.

Lagertha is the only one who seems to understand him, although she doesn't always like what he does. And I had a strong feeling that she would become the leader/earl of her former husband's people and eventually the ally Ragnar needed. Lagertha rocks! Glad to see her emerge as the leader she was destined to be!

  6. It was an interesting episode. I loved the parallel between the two weddings, Christian vs. Pagan, I think it was very well done.
I felt the episode moved a little slower than the others. However, I understand why that was necessary in order to show all these alliances/thought/doubts/fears and so on going on with everyone.
I am a little surprised at Floki, I think he's grudge might be about Athelstan, but even if that is the case it seems a little weird and out of the blue. I mean, he could hold back on his grudge towards Ragnar while Athelstan was there and now that he is gone he can't? I seriously hope there's more to it than that and they won't screw Floki's character with this.
Lagertha...wow, probably my favorite moment of the episode was finding out she was Earl. I expected it after the last episode, it was obvious she had her supporters among Sigvurd's (sp.?) men, but the moment was perfect and it seemed to relieve a bit from the tension and the darkness of the episode.
