Aramis. Porthos and Athos I nearly need to flip a coin over but, Porthos probably. Then Constance and d'Artagnan. Of the remaining characters I wasn't really that interested in the beginning, Queen Anne and Treville are both gaining in my fascination.
I think Constance and Aramis have the best line delivery in their scenes and good chemistry with just about anyone they interact with. In my opinion it makes them both pretty dynamic and fun to watch, even when they're being super serious.
And, I like that they're letting Constance become a bit of a fighter, and not the naive character from the book.
Agreed. I find them the most riveting characters on The Musketeers. I often find myself wishing they had contact with others on the show, especially Constance, just to see how they would play off of them. Constance becoming a fighter is part of why she's one of my favorite female characters right now. So many of the female leads on shows I am watching have become plot devices, more damsel in distress than a modern world should allow. On Musketeers, where they would have justification for this, they have made efforts to make the women interesting and complex. It's a much needed change and quite frankly a breath of fresh air.
I'm all about Aramis. But I'm loving classic brooding-Athos also. After that it gets more challenging. Porthos is pretty awesome. Constance is great. D'Artagnan is pretty good most of the time. Really just enjoying the show. :)
Or if they don't do the damsel-in-distress plot, they go to this trope of a "tough" female character who becomes a cardboard cutout or an automaton (who is still somehow just a plot device) instead of an honestly fleshed-out character. I think they've done well avoiding both of those directions with Constance so far. She's intelligent, tough, forward thinking, compassionate. Like you said, she's complex.
The show has turned out far better than I could have hoped really, it didn't look very promising from the promo material so I was pleasantly surprised tbh. I think, on the whole, they just have a team that works well together.
It would be nice to see them expand the contact between different characters, but I suppose they have time for that. I really appreciate how they've portrayed Constance and developed her. I was totally with Aramis in the pilot when he said "Him I'm not sure about, her I like" when referring to d'Artagnan and Constance respectively.
I have to admit that while I didn't care for Constance at all in the book, Aramis fascinated me. Which made me annoyed at where they took the character in later books (though even then much of the dichotomy in the character still fascinated me).
I was glad for the decision in this version to make it more of a spirit-of-the-musketeers story rather than a standard book adaptation. I think it gives us the chance to explore new possibilities and directions for all the characters, including Constance and Aramis.
I think if Constance especially was portrayed as she is in the book, I'd be pretty disappointed, and the portrayal might make my teeth itch. ;)
My favorite is Athos. I adore the internally tortured, broody, blue-eyed Musketeer. After that, it is a toss-up between Porthos and Aramis. I voted for Porthos as my second vote in your poll, but it was a tough decision to choose between those two charming rogues. Constance and D'Artagnan round out my top 5 characters. I hope that BBC keeps this wonderful show around for a while. I'm still grumpy about their decision to cancel Ripper Street.
Thank you for this news!! : ). I didn't realize that Amazon had decided to jointly fund series 3 of Ripper Street along with BBC America. I am far less grumpy now. lol. Seriously, I am thrilled that I get a series 3 of Ripper Street and a series 2 of The Musketeers. I really hope both of these wonderful shows stick around for a while.
D'Artagnan is just kind of depressing...it seems like the Cardinal won in the end. But up to this point, I liked the dynamic between him and Athos the best, so they are naturally my favourite characters in the book...plus Mylady. She is such a delightful villain. I always had a trouble to relate to womanizer, which was always my problem with Aramis. Overly religious characters tend to annoy me, though.
Isn't it ironic that the most badass females (Constance, Siggy, Lagertha!!!!!!!) are currently in shows which are set in times during which females did have a difficult standing?
Well, with three Athos would have gotten a vote, too, but currently it's really not difficult to rank the characters for me...Aramis, Constance, Athos, D'Artagnan and Porthos, followed by the Cardinal, The Queen and Treville.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I like all the Musketeers but I think Aramis and Porthos are my favorite. Also Constance. She's brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI decided to be a bit cruel with only allowing 2 votes I think on reflection, lol
ReplyDeleteI voted for Aramis and Porthos, but Athos and Constance are also favourites of mine.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy all the characters and love all 4 Musketeers but in voting I had to go for the two I love the most which is Aramis and Constance.
ReplyDeletePretty much the same ;)

ReplyDeleteConstance is my favorite by far, but I love Aramis' snark as well. They are all a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteOh stick with only one vote. That makes people completely crazy. :-P
ReplyDeleteI find Queen Anne far more interesting now too. I hope they give here a juicy intrigue plot in the future.

Ha, that would have been very cruel XD
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Treville too, Hugo Speer is great is great isn't he :D

ReplyDeleteThat's my vote, too....which is odd, because in the books, they are actually my least favourite characters by far.
ReplyDeleteI "blame" the actors.

ReplyDeleteI still think their Ripper Street decision was financed based more than anything else :( Thank god Amazon are giving us season 3 :)

ReplyDeleteIf they keep up the good work with Constance, I might be able to give the Musketeers a recommendation in my blog, soon.
