The Walking Dead – Episode 4.15 – ‘Us’ Review & Discussion

24 Mar 2014

I know I’m getting close to the end of the TV season when I start cheering at my TV. This week’s The Walking Dead episode was an emotional, feel good episode – no, feel great episode. It’s the calm before the storm probably, but after last week’s heartbreaker, we needed a release. I’ll deal with whatever comes next week next week.

We’ve been waiting for the reunion between Maggie and Glenn for five weeks now, since Inmates. I first let out a yelp when Glenn saw Maggie’s note. I’d been waiting for that since we saw Maggie writing them a couple of episodes back. And then there was the reunion. I was certain Tara was gone, and then when I saw the lights I thought it would be a group from Terminus. I was squealing when it turned out be Maggie with Abraham’s group.

So for this week’s review, I’m just going to talk about a few of my favorite scenes and interactions. Nothing too deep for now. Pipe in with your own reactions in the comments.

The World According to Eugene

Eugene is quickly becoming a favorite of mine in that he adds some comic relief, in a believable way. He’s the socially awkward geek who credits his navigation skills – because it’s really hard to drive in a square – to virtual reality games. He has an audience now because his group believes he has answers, so he’s just continues to talk, whether what he’s saying makes any sense or not. I loved that he has a theory that walkers might have been behind the extinction of the dinosaurs. I would have loved to have heard more elaboration on that one.

His interactions with Rosita were great. They’re opposite personalities.  Whereas she is direct, with common sense, he withholds information to get what he wants, and he lords his power over Abraham to see his objectives fulfilled. The best Eugene moment of the night was his demonstration of how he smoothly handled the news that Tara prefers girls. “I’m well aware of that,” he responded without pause.

Dad with His Two Kids

Another great moment was when Rick – every worrying and planning – turned around to see Carl and Michonne both lagging behind because they’re competing in not falling off the train tracks. This was such a great moment because it was a minute or two of levity – of normalcy – made perfect by the smile that crept up on Rick’s face. The bonding between Carl and Michonne wasn’t complete though, until Carl gave back half of his candybar to Michonne. “Come on, we always share.”

Cats and Bunnies

We all know not to mess with Daryl, but poor Len had to learn the hard way. He really should have done what Carl did and shared, and forgotten about the rabbit.

Daryl is adjusting to his new group – one that differs from his old in that it’s more about a rudimentary form of government (rules and consequences) rather than friendship or family. Does this suit Daryl? Yes. Is it good for Daryl? No. Daryl has a tendency to withdraw when hurt, and he needs the friendship of Rick and his group to keep him emotionally open.

But the temptation of Joe’s group – what it offers, and that is companionship without the complications – is strong for Daryl. “Ain’t nothing sadder than an outdoor cat thinks he’s an indoor cat,” Joe tells Daryl. The question remains though whether Daryl is really an outdoor cat, as Joe thinks, or whether he’s better off indoors. Interestingly enough, the “cat” theme was present in Carl and Michonne’s candy bar choice and the “Big Cat” wrappers they left behind.

Tunnel of Nightmares

A dark, deserted tunnel under normal conditions is scary enough. One that is packed the undead clawing out from the rocks, like an illustration from Dante’s Inferno, is an inspiration for nightmares. The show and special effects team did a great job at making the scene of Glenn and Tara making their way through the tunnel super creepy. I really thought Tara wasn’t going to make it through.

Glenn and Maggie’s Reunion

You knew one of them was going to end up rescuing the other when they were finally brought back together.  I had pegged it as Glenn rescuing Maggie in Alone, but this worked out too. Not that their relationship needed to be tested, but it was refreshing to see how neither waivered in their resolve to find each, and never doubted the other’s resolve in doing the same. Maggie’s assertion that Glenn will never need her picture again was a testament of how strong of a couple they are.

Vacation in Terminus

Terminus really looked like somewhere I would want to vacation at, and that might be the most frightening point of all, because to paraphrase what Sasha said a few weeks ago, if it seems to good to be true …

So what did you think about this week’s episode? Was it what you expected? Do you have any special viewing plans for the season finale?

  1. Great Review!

Did you think that Mary looked eerily similar to that painting that Michonne was holding in "Claimed"?

I think the writers might have been making a nod to that episode with all the times the characters were saying "claimed". Could be just me trying to make connections, desperately, lol.

  2. Huh. I didn't put that together, but that's really interesting. I'll need to go back and rewatch that episode again. If for nothing else, I want to know if the guy who got choked "claimed" his bed.

  3. I'm so glad you pointed out the candy bar cat connection, since when I watched the episode, I was really confused by the whole "Ain't nothing sadder than an outdoor cat thinks he's an indoor cat" line until that. The Rick scene was pointless other than to lead to the discovery of the group's grudge over Rick for killing that guy and then for us to see the wrapper, now knowing they are hot on Rick's trail. The reunion between Glenn/Maggie was nice, but equally it was nice of the show to tell us now that Maggie dies next week. It was obvious the second they burned that photo, and even more so by the whole "You don't need it, you have me" line.

Prediction for next week: The Terminus people are cannibals (loads of people famililar with the comic have suggested that they probably will be, so I'll piggyback off of that); Maggie will die; Michonne will die; Eugene will die (just because he knows about the whole 'world gone to hell' thing so he can't possibly be allowed to live much longer).

    Awesome review btw.

  4. Finally a reunion! I feel like I've been waiting for two groups to meet up for a while now. Although it was nice to get conformation that the guys Daryl met are the same ones from the house Rick was in.

I think something will be off about Terminus but I can't even guess what it'll be.

    ReplyDelete
  5. No, no, no! No one's dying! ;) I took the outdoor cat as just a metaphor for Daryl being tamed by the group. He seemed to be resisting this new group and their ways through the whole episode, up until the end when he finally "claimed" something.

Of your predictions, I'd put the biggest probability on Michonne. Rick, Carl, and Michonne seem to be getting a little too comfortable, and with the Michonne flashbacks this season, you could say her story's been told - although I still have questions, actually.

I don't think Maggie is going to die yet. I think the reason they pushed the Glenn/Maggie reunion this week is just because they have other things to focus on next week. I don't think Eugene will die yet since his story hasn't had a chance to play out yet.

  6. I recognized Joe earlier as the guy on the porch, because the actor is well known, but I found it interesting that the group was tracking Rick. I wasn't expecting that, especially since Rick, Michonne and Carl took off down a street. How do you track that? It also hadn't hit me earlier that the choked guy would be able to identify Rick. This will put Daryl is a very interesting position when they meet up.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah, that only just occured to me. Is Daryl REALLY in that group, or is he just there because he can't survive on his own?

Michonne also has the sword. The most efficient tool to kill walkers (since guns make noise). And she's been able to use it for too long.

Maggie isn't going to survive. The only other option is that it's reversed and Glenn dies, but I just don't see it. That's the reason why Eugene will die. He knows about this thing, so why would they let it develop? If it was to develop, it would be a step closer to the show ending itself.

    ReplyDelete
  8. But do we know that Eugene really knows anything? We just have his word.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Isn't that another reason for him to die? Then we'll never know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. The guy who got choked is the same guy thats with Darryl and his current gang wearing the bandanna. So, he is the only one that can identify Rick.

But, definitely go back and rematch "Claimed". Theres a bunch of neat Easter Eggs and foreshadowing. When Michgonne is looking at that painting I mentioned earlier behind her on the wall is another painting of a big Sunflower. The camera does a nice point of view of Maggie and Glenn's group entering Terminus through tall Sunflowers. Flowers play an important part of this season.

  11. Great review! Thank you. :)
I think the irony of the finale is that everyone is going to end up the opposite of where they started after the prison fell. Take Daryl and Bob, for instance. We got that flashback to Bob joining the group and being asked the questions and, at that point, he was the last man standing of two previous groups. He told Daryl and Glenn that it didn't matter who they were. He was just happy to not be alone. What happens after that but Daryl becomes the Bob-- he starts drinking a bit, he then becomes the last surviving member of his group, and he joins a bunch of assholes simply because they are the only ones there. (Bob got a good group, Daryl got a terrible group.) Glenn then spends the second half the last member left of his own group but he joins up with another fellow last-one-standing in Tara and the two of them join up with Abraham's group. Bob gets the opposite ending-- instead of being perpetually alone, he winds up *twice* finding the same characters again... one of whom is the woman for whom Glenn is searching, the other is the woman who is quickly becoming Bob's love. What happened to Daryl, Bob, and Glenn is that they all had a reversal of fortunes when the prison fell. The same thing is also happening to everyone else as well. I think that's going to hold true through the finale.

  12. That is such a great observation! Also, did you notice that Crazy Lizzie wore her hair like that on occasion as well?

    ReplyDelete
  13. If either Maggie or Glenn is on the death list, I think it's actually Glenn because that makes her burning the picture more ironic and actually eerier. Glenn won't need a picture of Maggie anymore... because he's not around to look at it. It also would then mean that what Maggie really burned is Glenn's perspective of her-- the picture that he took of her while they were at the prison. It could symbolize the death of Maggie as we know if her if she loses Glenn.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes! I was thinking the SAME thing!
    good observation yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't think Eugene is going anywhere. They wouldn't bother introducing three characters, giving them screentime, and setting up the obvious next season plot of Roadtrip to D.C.., if Eugene was going to bite it anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That would be my reasoning behind suggesting Glenn dies. Both work equally.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks! We rock. :) Actually, so did Mika, now that I think about it. Here's a crackpot theory-- what if Mary is their mother?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Or we're reading too much into it and it was just a sweet moment. :) (Nah.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. This IS The Walking Dead. You don't get just sweet moments, especially not this close to the finale.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So interesting that you picked out the theme of "sharing," which Len did not want to do, but people have to do if they're going to survive together.

Chris, did you happen to catch Talking Dead with Josh McDermitt (Eugene). Josh (who's a really funny guy) said about that "I'm well aware of that" line to Tara that he may or may not have been aware, but he tends to defend himself with that know-it-all posture. I'm pretty sure Eugene not only does not know anything, but I know that Glenn realizes that (he scoffed at the mention of it) and I believe Abraham also realizes it. Abraham, I believe, is just a guy who needs a mission, and Eugene gave him one, and whether it's ridiculous or not doesn't matter. A mission is a reason for being. That's what I think, anyway.

And that tunnel was packed with contortionists (!) that were hired so the walkers would look all tangled up. That and as you said special effects made it look really scary. I though Glenn should have high tailed it back the way he came, but I guess he wouldn't be Glenn if he did.

You asked if the episode was what I expected. Pretty much. I was hoping for more reunions, but I'm happy we got at least some. I was surprised the hunters are looking for Rick. I mean, let it go, guys.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And there have been *so* many sweet moments. Though I wonder if that's just to off-set the even-more-gloom-than-usual. After Lizzie & Mika, we kind of needed some happy?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd agree with your assessment of Abraham as a guy who just needs a mission. I felt like they were getting at that with his conversation with Tara as well-- that these two just needed something to be doing, something outside of themselves that gave them purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Something like that.

  24. Great review, as always! I thought this episode functioned the way it needed to -- a little bit of hope and humor after last week's devastating episode with Carol and the girls; a little bit of togetherness before everything blows to pieces in next week's finale. I do think that this ep helps illustrate what I mean when I share my opinion that character moments ARE the "plot" of TWD. This half-season has done a lot of deep-diving character development, and I find those episodes much richer (and more emotionally draining) than the short "on the move" group check-ins we got this week. Though admittedly, the Tunnel Walkers -- like the Fire Walkers last week -- were some seriously sick special effects. No WAAAY I'm setting foot near that Universal Studios Walking Dead attraction next Halloween. ;)

So far, here are my (probably way off-base) finale predictions:
    1) We're losing either Glenn or Maggie next week. I hope not, but the camera seemed to hang on that burning photo a little too long. It would also keep with the soul-crushingness we've come to expect from TWD finales -- though your theory on losing Michonne would qualify too.
    2) Terminus is a colony of cannibals using signs to lure fresh meat (the final grill scene was classic.... "let's make YOU a plate" indeed). I'm hoping Beth hasn't been transformed into Brunch -- we have to keep at least one Greene around, don't we??
    3) Eugene is full of bull -- it almost seems like he has Asperger's with that droning monologue of his. But either way I'm fine with him, because he provides some seriously overdue comic relief. :)

I loved how Glenn covered for Tara when she met Maggie -- that was touching. And I really like what Jeff Kober is doing to make Joe charismatic and menacing at the same time. That "indoor cat" line was one of my favorites in the series. I'm actually wondering if Joe's gang is going to try taking something of Rick's (cough cough, comic reference), and what Daryl will do about it. I'm sure the cliffhanger(s) this time around will be pretty vicious.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't get why some people ever think that when there is any "symbolism" (like a picture being burned) that this means a character would die in the next episode. I don't think that anyone of the people who reached Terminus in "Us" will die in "A". Glenn or Maggie maybe could die next season (probably Glenn and Maggie will be pregnant). But I don't see that coming this season. We see Carol neither in the Promos nor in the Sneak Peeks but still we will very surely see Rick finding Judith in some way. I would bet that it is Carol who is eaten by Walkers in the Promo. You can't come back from things you've done. That's the story of this season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I didn't want to say it, but I think you're right about the grill, and Beth. That was one big grill! I'm wondering if maybe Joe will end up an unlikely ally of the group if they both have a common enemy (Terminus). I could see it being more likely if most of his crew got eliminated. It would be cool if he stuck around a while, and things are a little more fun when there's at least one lose cannon (i.e. Merle) around.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I did watch the Talking Dead. You think Glenn thinks that Eugene is faking? I haven't gotten that feeling from any of the characters yet, and that surprises me. I would think there would be more skeptics in the group. I'd at least expect that from Sasha.

The tunnel scene was great. Funny to think they were contortionists. I was thinking that Glenn should have knelt down down from his place on the rock and started stabbing the walkers in the head. There didn't seem to be that many, but where would the drama be in that?

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's an interesting theory. Let's revisit this after the finale. I can see this with Daryl and Bob changing, but I'm not sure yet how the rest of the group would fit. This would be interesting to discuss after next week's episode.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm going to need to go back and rewatch the flower episodes. That's something that I didn't pick up on until last week - the Lizzie reference - so I'll have to go back and see how they're referenced earlier in the season. Seems like next weekend will be a good time for a season marathon. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I totally agree Chris. Personally, I think that's one of the best achievements of this season half: the narrative has been split into so many stories that we have absolutely NO idea what to expect from the finale. Things could go in about two dozen different directions -- which makes it kind of cool, going in. :) I also agree there's a brutal, straightforward logic to Joe that would make him one heck of an ally if things took a certain turn. That would be awesome if he (and of course Daryl) ended up fighting on Rick's side ... though it sounds like there may be some pretty anxious question marks hanging in the air when the final scene goes dark next week!

    ReplyDelete
  31. That is really interesting!... I like it! very insightful and definitely a possibility that Mary is their mother. Maybe they make a reference to it next episode?

I also think that the group that Darryl is with knows Mary somehow. Maybe working with her or something. I don't think Terminus is a friendly place and possibly worse than Woodbury.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Agree that the second half has been nicely unpredictable. By bringing the storytelling down to the character level, it's become less predictable, since we really have no idea where any of these characters will be a week from now.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well-written review!

  34. Not sure who will be eaten & o gosh I do not want it to be Beth, but if it is& Maggie finds out she will die in revenge of her sister, I think Rick gets beat up but survives I hope, unless he protects Carl & michonne with his life, so many scenarios! Which will it be!?! Hmmm, who is screaming it does sound likeDarryl but have we ever heard Darryl scream for help? Heck! NO! So who knows! But it is prob that mean redneck group & Rick might get beat up, what is that metal thing Ricks in in the end? I think Abe's Army all survives prob, & Mary is somehow in that weird pic Michonne finds! They are identical!! So freaky. But We all know Michonne cannot die! She is a warrior! Carol I Love I just hope she is not on the give up stage, dealing with all that loss:( but surely not! She can handle it! What is to come!

  35. Also when will the finale spoiler come out!? I want it now! Thank you!teehee

  37. Just a flicker of a smile on Glenn's face after Sasha said that this guy knows what caused the outbreak. But then he said, "Yeah, he does." And now here's a treat for you. A Josh McDermitt comedy routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPqrFBDSKhs

  38. Thanks! Yeah, Joe seemed like they had had run-ins with Terminus before, which makes sense as they're all in this one, small area, which then makes me wonder if Woodbury had run-ins with them. It's kind of convenient that there is now no one left alive in the story from Woodbury, who might have been able to warn the main group about Terminus, if they ever knew about it.

  39. http://comicbook.com/blog/2014/03/24/the-walking-dead-were-these-paintings-about-mary-from-terminus/ Just noticed that all the paintings tie into the other plots. There are two bunnies (Daryl hunting, Rick teaching Carl to hunt), a white dog (Beth & Daryl at the funeral home), sunflowers (Beth & Daryl at that grave site; Carol & Tyreese bury the girls & "just look at the flowers, Lizzie"), and then the painting of Mary. Only one eye is scratched out (like The Governor, and it's Michonne who did that to The Governor who is holding the painting.) One of the bunnies even looks like it's paused right before a trap like the one Rick shows Carl to build in that clip.

  40. Oh wow! Awesome link! thanks Mary! Great job and I really appreciate you sharing all this! it's stuff like this that makes the shows we watch so much more enjoyable I think. Don't you?
I'm glad you found these 'Easter Eggs'. If I come across anything else I will be sure to share them here.

  41. I wondered the same thing...maybe Woodbury had run-ins with them before? But then again I think the Gov would've destroyed them long ago if they had, lol. But interesting theory. Love your ideas.

  42. I like doing season marathons right before a season finale and next weekend sounds perfect. I read an interview with Scott Gimple that there are many hints in the first half of the season that lead to the finale so I'm going to keep an eye out.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm just going to butt in here to say this discussion is really interesting. Thanks for sharing all of this!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I saw a marathon on AMC promoted for next weekend. I think it runs over night, so I'll probably do it on my own. I bought the episodes on Amazon, so I can do it on my own schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You mean our preview articles? Sorry, I don't think it's coming this week. The networks tend to keep tighter control over the spoilers for the really big episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Eugene knows nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Actually, in reading this thread I feel a little less confident now about Maggie being the one to go. We just lost Hershel, after all, and it sounds like Beth could be MIA for quite awhile (unless that was part of her behind Mary on the grill back there, ew). So the Greenes have been pretty thinned out. I just feel like it's going to be one of those two, either Maggie or Glenn. Too many lingering close-ups on that stinkin' photograph. :)

And people are thinking Michonne? Hmmmm ... I feel like they're finally just starting to develop her as a character vs. a caricature. I'm also thinking (and hoping) they keep Carol around. She has become just as tough as nails -- could probably lead that whole group almost better than anyone!
