Last night, The Walking Dead continued its fourth season with an all new episode, “Alone”. After a disappointing episode last week, I really hoped “Alone” would be so much better than “Still” but I was disappointed again.
I love The Walking Dead, but seriously, I did not enjoy this episode at all. I don’t mind the characters being separated, I like the danger surrounding them but once again, The Walking Dead characters acted very stupidly, and it’s getting boring.
It put me back right in season 2. There were good scenes, with walkers attacks but otherwise, it wasn’t very interesting.
It was only about two groups : Daryl and Beth and Maggie, Sasha and Bob. Daryl and Beth’ story was a bit better than Maggie and her friends’.
Maggie, Sasha and Bob were in a dangerous situation : they have only six bullets left, walkers keep attacking them when there was fog all over them and they had no shelter, no place to hide and feel safe. They needed to move but Maggie wanted to find Glenn first. But, they found the train tracks before. Bob revealed he listened to a radio message from the sanctuary. So, Maggie decided they had to go to the “terminus”, because it's what Gleen would have done. Bob agreed but Sasha found it was too good to be true so she didn’t want to get there… Very stupid from her. Yeah, it’s horrible you’re surviving in the woods, there is a shelter not that far and you don’t want to go… Stupid.
So, they all went by the train tracks. After one night, Sasha and Bob woke up to find Maggie had left them, because she didn’t want them to risk their lives for her… Okay, very stupid again. If you’re in group, you don’t leave them to be surviving alone. It’s more dangerous all alone with walkers everywhere and Sasha and Bob are risking their lives anyways. Bob wanted to follow Maggie and find her back, Sasha did not but still she went along.
While Maggie was leaving blood signs for Glenn to know where she was heading, Bob and Sasha argued again about following Maggie or not. Sasha wanted to find a safe place, have some sleep and take shelter. Bob trying to convince her if Tyreese was alive, he would be at the terminus. When they came across an abandoned factory, Sasha found the perfect place to stay. Bob tried a speech, which didn’t work (it wasn’t a very good speech, nobody believes he is not afraid) and he even kissed her. That came out of nowhere, but I can understand why some human contact can feel good in those apocalyptic times and how it could have affected asha. But that did not work either.
Anyway, they finally decided to split. Once again, terrible stupid idea. Why splitting when you’re only two ? You can work on a compromise people. If you’re alone, you really have less chance of surviving.
Sasha went into the old factory and that was when the episode went downhill for me. What happened next was so stupid.
Sasha saw Maggie lying down on the ground by a window. She approached the window and let it fall. The noise attracted walkers, so Maggie and Sasha killed them. After the fight, Maggie explained she was waiting for Sasha and Bob because she could not survive alone… So, girl, you’re waiting hidden on the ground behind a truck ? Why no go back on the train tracks ? And why leaving in the first place ? It was very stupid, they’re lucky to be alive. In a more realistic world, they would be dead. So, they went looking for Bob now, and they found him on the train tracks. They're all reunited !
So, what happened in this episode for Maggie, Bob and Sasha was pointless. They are back to the beginning, three of them walking down the train tracks. I really did not enjoy or understand the point of their story.
I wish Bob or Sasha had been killed, at least something would have happened in the episode.
Daryl and Beth continued their adventure together from last week. Now, he was teaching her how to track. Beth was a fast learner but she still needed Daryl’s help to kill a walker. Later, they walked into a cemetery and they hold a funeral for Hershel. It was very touching and I’m glad for Beth she could say goodbye to her father in some way.
It's always better to get closure.
Daryl and Beth found a very nice house by the cemetery, very clean and with food and drinks. It was a perfect safe place. It even had a piano so Beth could play and sing. It was actually a funeral home. It could have been creepy but zombies trying to eat you alive is way more creepy than this. They even considered staying in that house.
So they stayed there and Daryl showed he was a good man, because he didn’t take all the food, in case people were living there. Daryl and Beth’s relationship is evolving, they seem to care more about each other, probably because they’re surviving together. Still, it was nice to see Daryl being more open and smiling. At last, Beth found something to do and now she felt relevant.
I don't know if it's a romantic connection starting between them, but it was good to watch them acting normal for once.
But at night, Daryl had a stupid reaction. So, now even if Daryl is starting to act stupid, I’m starting to lose confidence in the show. He heard the dog barking, so he went and opened the front door. He didn’t even check before if people were there… or walkers. So, when he opened the door, a lot of walkers tried to get in. It was a nice scene, quite scary but we knew Daryl would be okay, so there wasn’t that much suspense and Beth ran quickly, we didn’t even see her so it was hard to care also. When Daryl finally got out the house, he ran and watched Beth leaving in a car… I don’t think the girl was stupid enough to just drive without waiting for Daryl. She had to be with someone else, maybe who took her without waiting for Daryl. Surely, not someone from the prison. We will see. I hope she'll be okay.
So Daryl was all alone, but he had still hopes to find Beth back so he walked down the road but he finally came to a crossroad and Beth left no signs to where she went. Poor Daryl, when he starts to get closed to someone, they disappear. So, he sat down the road, waiting for Beth to come. Only, it wasn’t Beth but a group of five armed men. Their leader saw great potential in Daryl as he was using a crossbow and not a gun. It meant he was good (and he is !) so he would take him with his group.
Those guys are probably the one who whom Glenn and Daryl will stay because for the opening scene was actually a flash forward. Daryl, in a motorcycle again !, and Glenn, in a car, found a lonely Bob surviving (and a bit drunk). They asked him Rick’s three questions and Bob revealed he killed one person, who asked for it. Was it Sasha, Maggie or someone else ?
I was disappointing by this scene also. Now, we know Glenn and Daryl would be okay, so there isn’t much suspense when we watch them now. When Daryl got attacked at the funeral home, or when Bob got bitten by a walker, I didn’t really care. Apparently, neither of them recognized Bob from the prison, Bob didn’t recognize them either. I thought they had met at some point back there. So, their reunion felt quite weird and a bit pointless.
Edit : Ok, I may had been suffering from my sickness while watching the episode, but it was clearly a flashback and not a flashforward. Sorry, but still, it doesn't change my opinion on this scene. It was pointless. We knew Bob had survived alone, we knew it's tough, we've wacthed it with other characters.
“Alone” was not a great episode in my opinion. I didn’t understand the characters, their actions and psychologies so I kinda lose my interest watching it.
I enjoyed the theme, loneliness but it wasn’t used as I thought it would be.
The episode demonstrated how dangerous it is to be alone and that being in a group makes you stronger, even if there can be differences between people. It’s still safer to be with somebody else.
What I really dislike in “Alone” was the fact the people wanting to be alone finally realized they needed to be together and found their group back (Maggie and Sasha) and the ones wanting to stay together got separated (Daryl and Beth). I know, in life, things don’t usually happen the way you would want them to, but I found the way Maggie and Sasha got reunited and how Daryl got separated for Beth was not well written. It felt out of characters for Daryl and Maggie to act like that.
I don’t know what the writers tried to do, but clearly it didn’t work on me. But you, what did you think of “Alone” ? Did you enjoy it ? Tell me why !
Walker notes :
• So the male characters (Glenn, Daryl & Bob) are okay but the female ones are in danger (Beth, Maggie and Sasha).
• I really missed Rick, Michonne and Carol this week. I’m getting used to not seeing Carol but Michonne and Rick are great character it’s been too long without them.
• Bob keeps drinking. When he’s gonna meet Beth, those two are gonna get wasted !
• Daryl sleeping in a coffin… It’s bad luck, right ? Luckily, it’s Daryl and I don’t think the writers can kill him

um...the opening was not a flashforward... it was a flashback.
ReplyDeleteThe opening was definitely a flashback to when they first met Bob. You can tell based on Daryl's getup and the motorcycle and the fact they didn't know him.
ReplyDeleteI respect that some people may get bored with these episodes, but it should be understood that sometimes there can't be endless action if there is to be character development. Last week's episode was one of the series best, in my opinion, as it fleshed out Daryl well and actually developed Beth. This week wasn't as good, but still worked in developing Bob more and Sasha, both who also weren't well developed. We still don't know a lot about them, but at least we can care a little more about them now though (although they'd be first on my chopping block to go).
I'm curious if the group that Daryl met up with, which is the same group in the house that Rick was hiding from, will end up being a particular group from the comics. If so, I fear for who gets in their way. Also, I want to know what happened to Beth! Before last week I'd say she'd be low on the chopping block to go for me, but now I actually really care what happens to her.
I enjoyed this episode as much as the last. Strange analogy but I see it as a game of chess. Prison being when the pieces where in their place, the attack from their opponent, the pieces scatter. The difference being there is no King or Queen to protect and the opponents change with players. But still the same the setup, the movement of individual pieces, the en passant, promotion and check!
ReplyDelete😄 I guess unless you play chess you won't understand. But it was a good episode with pieces being establied in different environments and localities soon to be tested against survival.
Loved it, can't wait for the next episode.
I have to add, I miss Rick a lot when he isn't on screen, even when he isn't doing much TWD feels strange without his presence. For me he is the center of the TWD world. Someone whose journey I've followed since day 1. Daryl and Michonne come second and third.
Dude, your review sucks. I think you lack appreciation for the direction the show is heading because it's obviously too difficult for you to follow the storyline. Why don't you go do a review for some teenybopper show on the CW?
ReplyDeleteMy bad I'm so sorry. I was really sick watching it, fever tricked my mind :(
ReplyDeleteI don't mind character development, I actually look for it and it's one of the best part of The Walking Dead but in this episode, it didn't work on me. Sure, we learnt more on Bob an Sasha, but actually I've never really cared about them. It's been a while since they first appeared and it's only now we get to know more about them, guess it was too long for me.
ReplyDeletewell, I don't think I can't follow the storyline, I just didn't understand the point of this episode. It didn't work on me. Maybe it will make more sense by the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way, I don't watch CW shows.
I beg to differ. You couldn't differentiate between a flashback and a flashforward (even though you pathetically attempted to blame your confusion on a sickness). And in your walker notes, you said that Bob and Beth need to meet because Bob can't stop drinking. I don't recall Bob having a drink in a while, oh wait, it must have been during that "flashforward" you saw. Oh and Beth having one night of drinking fun doesn't condemn her into alcoholism. I seriously think you should reconsider whether or not you want to start watching shows on the CW. I hear their plots are simple enough. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, then I suggest being less of a cynic to a show you can't follow very well.
ReplyDeleteHow can y'all readers not vote for Maggie and Sasha by the train tracks as the best Walker kills? Maggie with the street sign was absolutely VICIOUS, just swinging and hacking away, there's something really sexy about it too. About time a survivor was smart enough to get a melee weapon more long range than a knife. I remember screaming at my tele when Tyrese, then Beth and Daryl walked past a baseball bat by the river three episodes ago. But yeah, this episode was frusturating and boring. I could see what they were trying to do with Sasha, Bob and Maggie, but that's could have been acheived in 3-4 scenes, not a whole episode.
ReplyDeleteAnd you'd think their knives would be really in need of sharpening by now.
ReplyDeleteInteresting you picked out that line from Daryl. I don't why he thinks the good ones did not survive, but the bad ones did? So good = weak and bad = tough? Rather a pessimist, that Daryl.
ReplyDeletevery bad review, IMO, sasha and bob had been flirting before they got sick, bob definitely had a thing for her, so the kiss wasn't out of the blue. Of course sasha would question the sanctuary place, the last time she trusted a safe haven it was run by the governor and he killed half the town. The show needs character development, and thats what the last few episodes have given us, which have been the strongest this season. The men that daryl met with at the end of the episode where the ones rick had to run away from. Can't believe you missed that the opening of the episode was a flashback.
ReplyDeleteDisagree about 130% -- in my opinion, the character-driven episodes are the heart of the show. The zombie stuff is exciting and scary, yes, but really just context for showing us how these people change. What would bore me is watching a bunch of characters run around shooting guns and crossbows, not really knowing or understanding any of them -- and therefore, not really caring if or how they died. What TWD is doing in this back half of the season is asking us to invest in these characters as people. We may not always understand or agree with their decisions (I definitely don't), but I will *always* prefer TWD as a story when it focuses on the personal journeys of EACH character ... not just a bunch of people running through the forest (down the tracks, through a prison yard, across a highway, etc. etc. etc.) splattered in mud and zombie guts.
ReplyDeleteI know and I like the character development but I thought it wasn't well done in this episode. The writers never really made me care about Bob or Sasha, so now to focus on them felt a bit weird and it really didn't touch me.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought the episode was too long, everything they did in "Alone" could have been wrapped up in 25 minutes, not 45.
I don't want to only see people running and fighting off zombies, I like to watch how each characters change and evolve. In my opinion it was more interesting in episodes such as "After" or "Inmates" than this one.
I bet Bob was bitten enough to turn very slowly. So even this story will have a point.
