The Vampire Diaries - Season 5 - Caroline Dries Interview

Katherine Pierce has gone to Hell — or at least The Vampire Diaries' version of the dark side — and she's not coming back.

In the final moments of Thursday's episode, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) made her peace with losing her centuries-long battle to stay alive, but as she put her hands on Bonnie's shoulders, the gateway to the other side, nothing happened. Suddenly, the wind started blowing, and Katherine was sucked into oblivion.

"It's unlike anything we've seen before," executive producer Caroline Dries tells TVGuide.com. "We've seen characters appear to Bonnie [Kat Graham], the anchor, and go through Bonnie and that's there initiation into the other side. When Katherine died, that didn't happen and [instead] she's ripped out of Bonnie's arms and sucked into wherever by some dark void. We don't say anything religious like Heaven or Hell, but that's the implication — she's going to a dark world."

As she series has shown countless times, a character can die and come back to life, but Dries says this isn't their way of keeping Katherine around and they don't intend on delving this darker world.

"I don't think we'll explore it so much as in the future we'll use something similar happening like that on the other side where it becomes a bit of disarray over there and people get sucked into oblivion," Dries says. "What we wanted when we were writing the Katherine story line this season was to really deliver on her as a character. This show is known for bringing people back to the dead, so death didn't ever feel final; they could hop over from the other side if we feel desperate. So we wanted to say, 'No, she's gone.'"

Katherine being the master manipulator, she of course didn't exit without leaving a very deadly parting gift. Poor Elena might be returning to her body, but she's now been injected with the vampire-eating virus that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been suffering with. Together the two will have a mighty battle to face in the final chapter of Season 5.

Yes, they cheapen death on the show and they pick one of their best characters to demonstrate that stakes can be high. Pure bullshit. Plus more Dullena, ugh. The show I once liked so much is in a downward spiral, clearly. The ratings are proof of it.

  2. It says something about the writers and show runners, when they have to explain their story and motives rather than let the show do it for them.

  3. I haven't watched it yet I dvr it.But this will be last episode for me.Killing off katharine Is last straw.I have stayed watching despite not liking everything going down. But,no more.I always look forward to when they bring on katharine to shake things up.Elena Is way too boring.

The VD hasn't been great or good really since first part of season 3.Since Kevin Williamson ended involvement things have gone downhill.I will still be watching the originals. But,no more VD for me.

  4. I'm glad that someone explained what happened to Katherine, because that was too much of a cliffhanger. Elena is back in her body, and apparently someone will "make a deal with the devil." Does that mean Klaus? He would be the one to call when werewolf venom is involved. He might not be able to cure the Ripper virus, though. I don't see why Klaus WOULDN'T want to step in, considering who the virus is reminiscent of, and especially since Damon killed the culprit- Wes. So if a deal has to be made with anyone, it's someone who can definitely cure the virus who will want something in return. I don't think anyone will call Klaus. Maybe Enzo, "the devil on Damon's shoulder," had something done to him when he went back to Augustine that makes him the cure as a failsafe or a sort of control in Wes' experiment. Enzo definitely won't want two infected vampires feeding off him. This could explain how Enzo ends up one of the gang. Another possible solution would be to resurrect Wes and hope that he'll return the favor by developing a cure. That seems a lot less likely. I'm pretty sure Elena's behavior problems will be solved by the end of the next episode, however it happens.

  5. Why would Katherine be judged seemingly so much more harshly then someone like Quetseya that created the other side and therefore created untold suffering for every supernatural being for the rest of eternity since they can't pass through to the ''normal other side" and find peace? That's pretty lame. I just assumed it had to do with the travelers messing with it somehow.

  7. Was sad to see Katherine go but glad she didn't just go to the other-side. Her ending, to me, was perfect for her character. Can't wait for the next ep!

  9. Not really the fans fault. They have gotten used to JP and CD giving them what they want. They now expect that treatment, regardless of the story. Again I have noticed that Elena has muscled in on to another characters story. The Augustine was meanted to be Damon's story, now Elena has become one too, add to that she has had new villain Marko watching her since day one......😕 Wondering when she will become the travellers no:1 in just a few episodes left in the season. The writers or JP/CD truly have a obsessive thing for Nina Dobrev.

I predict the new doppelgänger will turn out to be another Nina. Possibly so Elena can travel into new doppelgänger body when the virus destroys hers.
