The Musketeers - Episode 1.08 - The Challenge - Preview & Teasers

12 Mar 2014

This could very well be a continuation of last week’s story in some ways as the theme of women and their role in the world of men is very much carried over as the subplot behind the main action of the tournament between the Musketeers and Red Guards. There is an entrance fee to be paid in order to enter the competition you see, a hefty thirty livre which most of them do not possess, and how they each get it is down to the women in their lives.

For an episode that deals with honour I think that it does tread a fine line in places when it comes to this secondary plot. In particular Aramis comes off as a tad cold at times, which is a shame as I don’t think he is perhaps meant to be seen as ruthless as it comes across in the few scenes we see him in, it goes against what we already know of him as a character so I feel that it could have been lightened up a little perhaps. Porthos’ attempts at raising the fee by using the same methods are where the real story lies though, his courting of wealthy widow Alice Clerbeaux (Zoe Tapper; Mr Selfridge) doesn't quite go to plan and he is left in a quandary.

A couple of relationships from the books that we haven’t really seen blossom as yet get under way too, one is Athos taking D'Artagnan under his wing which is something I think many of us have been wanting to see for a while now. Those that have played Monkey Island may recognise a certain similarity to the elder Musketeer’s bag of tricks when it comes to attempting to tame the young Gascon's impetuous nature during a fight. As in the game it takes a while for it to work but Athos proves himself to be great mentor in the end, perhaps because he has learned the hard way to control this side of himself too.

Finally, there are some very sweet Constance and D'Artagnan scenes this week, but (and I am sorry to have to say this, it is a big but) be prepared for a bumpy road ahead as things are going to get a bit rough for a while before they straighten themselves out later in the season I feel. Hard choices must be faced and there are turns in their lives that I think some won’t enjoy, though as I say there are glimpses of a silver lining ahead that show that this plot has only just started in many ways. As someone who doesn't normally take to complicated romance stories I actually enjoyed what unfolded here and find myself rooting for the couple somewhat, certainly much more so than last week, and I'm intrigued as to where we go from here.

The Challenge airs at 9pm on Sunday 16th March on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD, below are a few dialogue teasers and a spoiler hangman to see you through until then. Don't forget to come back to vote in our poll after the episode and let us know what you thought.

“How he resisted you I have no idea, but like I said, self-discipline isn't my strong suit”

“Get on your knees before he changes his mind”

“You have natural talent, but too often you let your emotions run away with you, talent won’t keep you alive if you let your heart rule your head” Athos

“You know what I like about cutting people’s throats? It stops them talking” Lebarge

“I can’t risk my future for you, I have far too much to lose” Constance

“You shine so brightly in my eyes it puts all other women in the shade”

“Porthos my friend, I think it’s time we went fishing, for a patroness” Aramis

“I'm sorry your Majesty, I wasn't aware there were any rules”

“But I'm innocent, I love the King, whatever it is I didn't do it!”

“I’ll accept it as a loan, I’ll pay you back when I win”

The hangman has been solved!

There is a subtle difference in how each of the leaders introduce the challenge to their men. For Treville it is about the honour of the Musketeers proving they are the better unit, the prize money is of second importance. Whereas with the Cardinal it is all about humiliation and his own personal honour above that of his Red Guards, and bribes them with a cash reward.

  1. Thanks so much for the preview as always, Sandi! :) I look forward to your previews each week!

Some questions: Do we at least get more D'Artagnan and Constance kissing scenes? A scene in bed with them maybe? And does Constance say "I love you" to D'Artagnan?

If you're allowed to answer any of the above questions, that would be awesome! If not, I completely understand! :) I'm so glad you said that they will have sweet moments! That's something to look forward to!!!

Also, I figured that angst would start now since I remember the writers saying that things will get more complicated later on for them. Also, I do love that the writers made it clear that it was NOT Constance's choice to marry Bonacieux. She had no choice in the manner. Her storyline paralleled Fleur's from episode 7. So I don't really consider it cheating if a woman was forced into a marriage with a man she doesn't love. That's not a real choice. And not a real marriage. More like prison!

  2. Thanks for the review, I'm glad the episode comes off quite well, despite a few minor issues with it..

I'm assuming there's a lot of swordplay in this episode, with D'artagnan's need to be a Musketeer being central to this one, along with his skills coming more into play?

I'm pleased to hear that Athos does indeed start acting like a mentor towards D'artagnan, as I've said before that secondary relationships within our group of Musketeers have needed fleshing out a bit more and I did like their short friendship scenes in episode 3, where D'artagnan was concerned about Athos's behaviour and in turn Athos confides in D'artagnan about executing his wife - though of course that was done for plot reasons regarding the final.

I'm not surprised the road for D'artagnan and Constance will be a bumpy one and I'm fully expecting one or both of them to feel some guilt over what they've done, with one or both of them even pushing the other away for a while. I'm not even expecting their affair to last into the start of series 2, as there's a good chance Constance will choose loyalty to her husband over her love for D'artagnan and D'artagnan will choose honour ( as a new Musketeer ) over his love for Constance. Having said all that, I'm assuming their new passion for each other remains present in the episode, as the episode builds towards a tense final?

Does Constance's husband put in an appearance?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Just to add, I'm tempted to ask about D'artagnan and Milady and whether there's any suggestion that he's still attracted to her on a physical level but I'm not sure you'd answer that either way.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I really can't see Constance staying with her husband any longer, especially after what happened. The only way she'd stay with him is if he forces her. And if he does force her, then I'm sure D'Artagnan will help her get away from Bonacieux. I just don't ever see Constance choosing her husband freely over D'Artagnan. Keep in mind, she was forced into her marriage. The question of loyalty has come up a lot. And in the press releases, it has been mentioned that she'd have to choose who she is loyal to. And to me, that will always be D'Artagnan. I personally think in episode 10 is when Constance will be fully free of her husband. We see that she'll be kidnapped by Milady (with maybe her husband being involved in her kidnapping as well). I just don't see her staying with Bonacieux in season 2 at all. What would be the point of that? So she could continue to be miserable? I doubt the writers would do that to her. Especially after sleeping with D'Artagnan, I don't think Constance would ever want to sleep with her husband again or be with Bonacieux in any shape or form "by choice."

We'll get angst now. But I think episode 10 will end on a good note for D'Artagnan and Constance. I think she will be freed from her husband's clutches. And I think she will be saved from Milady as well. I also don't see a cliffhanger. They didn't know if there would be a season 2. So I don't think they created a cliffhanger.

  5. Thanks for the preview!

We get to see a scene between Athos and Milady in the preview of BBC. After their little 'fallout' in the last episode how is this gonna play out?

And does Athos tell the other musketeers that she is his wife? They deserve to know, because they are his friends and I consider it odd they didn't ask him right away in the last episode. Or are the writers holding back that storyline for the final episode? That would be the only explanation I would accept. And it would fit the promo shoots for the last episode...

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think they'll hold this reveal for the last episode as it is in the book. Athos reveals it to the others (Porthos/Aramis) when he's about to find her to kill her.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Going to wait until we get a letter before guessing the hangman ha.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Because women had little or no financial support in the 17th century and being divorced was frowned upon much more than it is now, Constance might have little choice but to stay with her husband, especially as 'moral religious values' were drummed into people much more back then. It depends how realistic the producers want her choices to be or how much drama they want the couple to have in series 2.

Also if the producers were going to free Constance from her husband by the end of series 1, I can't help thinking they'd have made him a cruel man, rather than a man Constance just didn't love - she genuinely said in episode 7 that she didn't hate her husband.

I'm not saying D'artagnan and Constance definately won't be together by the series end ( I hope they are ) but there's a strong possibility they won't be, especially if the producer was fairly confident they'd get a second series - drama producers like their drama and there's little drama to be had from D'artagnan and Constance living happily ever after.

  9. You're welcome :) You will get some of those things happening, and I can guarantee plenty more GIF and video clips for all the D'Artagnan/Constance fans from this episode ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I was a little concerned after the RT review too, but overall I think it's ok, Porthos' story doesn't exactly go to plan anyway and I don't think Aramis' dalliance is anything serious. From what is said in one scene the women involved are pretty aware of what the score is which leads me to believe they aren't as 'used' as that review made out, but Aramis is still a bit cold in some of his language, which is odd.

There is quite a lot of fighting in general in this episode, love him or hate him Vinnie Jones can bloody fight!! lol. And so can the others, who all show off their particular skill set.

Hmm, they still feel passionately about each other, but it's shown more sweetly/practical than full on groping first time lust. And yes, her husband is home rather than working away this week.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The problem is that if she leaves him what would she live on, the only trade she has is working for her husband so I think she would find it very hard to support herself unfortunately. I agree that she won't want to be with him by choice, but she is in a very tricky situation now the initial steps with D'Artagnan have been made. I really like Constance as a character, and honestly, my heart bleeds for her in this episode when she comes up against what she does the poor lass :(

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hmm, I'm not sure I can really answer that one straight, Milady is very important to the whole plot, she has her sights set and they may differ to what the Cardinal has had in mind.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You're welcome :) Athos and Milady, it's a short but quite pivotal scene for later in the season I think, sparks fly and the lesson Athos is attempting to teach D'Artagnan is something he has to reign himself in on at one point.

I think that Porthos and Aramis held back from asking too much last week maybe because they are so close to Athos? They are used to his brooding ways by now and know they will not get anything out of him if they push a point too hard. This week, those two are kinda busy with their lady friends and D'Artagnan has his hands full with Constance, training and revenge, so I think they may keep it for later on.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I wonder if they will kill Milady off this season or not? With no Cardinal next year maybe it would be wise to keep hold of her for a bit longer, have Constance's release the end of this season and then the revenge on Milady next year?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ha, I wonder why :p Unfortunately it wasn't the best letter chosen, only 1 'K' in the paragraph. But I think it should be a bit easier later this evening, I'll update about 9ish probably :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Athos/Milady interaction is short but satisfying, I think it's more of a set up for later but maybe a little to remind the audience of the similarities in the heart over head nature of him and D'Artagnan, and how he has had to learn to control it already. It's one of many lovely little character building moments this episode has, it's a joy in that regard which is probably why I liked it so much as I love character driven plots.

Poor Constance, I just wanted to give her a great big hug tbh. She's one strong lady, and takes on a lot this week, I think she will come out the other end OK but it's gonna be tough watching her go through this. The plot definitely carries on over imo, it hasn't ended yet, and from the trailer it doesn't look like she'll be in episode 9, so I assume it will do in episode 10 for her.

    ReplyDelete
  17. To say that there's no point in Constance staying with Bonacieux is a little bit of an overly simple viewpoint. It negates the reasons she would have married him in the first place and dismisses the challenges of the time period. Leaving your husband or getting a divorce were not easy things. Honor, standing, religion and financial resources are only a few of the challenges they're up against.

To expect Constance to have that resolved by episode 10 doesn't seem realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  18. But I'll bet the word the letter 'K' appears in is MusKeteers. :)

btw Any good brotherhood moments with the four of them this week?

    ReplyDelete
  19. You could be on to something there with the k ;) lol

Yeah, there are a few, both in (good hearted) competition with each other and as a team, like in the sneak peek.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know there is a character description somewhere that says that Aramis can be ruthless, but I don't like imagining "cold" Aramis. It doesn't fit with what we've learned of him so far.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Interesting. I've been wondering about the logic behind Milady's actions and position. What does she get out of her relationship with the cardinal and why would she go along so easily with his agenda? I think they've hinted at things, that she might be in a much worse position in the world without the cardinal's protection or coercion, but with the way they've portrayed her, I can't help but wonder what her agenda would really be.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It certainly does take a fairly complex turn in this episode, and it's a pleasing one from my point of view; not too angsty but realistic and written/performed very well I think. I'm not sure how it will go from here, it could be take any number of turns in episode 10, I literally have no clue as to who she will be with at the end of the season, even though the characters emotions are very clear.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That's good to know. Complex is good. I want at least an element of realism.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As an Aramis fan I think I am having a harder time with it as it's gone against what we have seen of him before, especially how he was with Agnes/Ninon/etc. I would have just made his tone a little milder in places, and/or made it even more obvious that the women are aware of the nature of what is happening maybe. I don't think it's too much of a problem overall, just irks me a bit as he is my favourite I think. But then, everyone has to have faults too so I guess this is to be expected also? I'll be very interested in what others think when they see the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sweet! :)

Some of my favorite moments in the series so far have been Athos Porthos and Aramis being the three musketeers or being on the same page with d'Artagnan being slowly brought up to speed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have a feeling that she craves power, especially power over men, perhaps a bit of a sociopath in a way (though with this watered down version of the show it hasn't been played to its full extent).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Indeed, their easiness and joking with each other is what makes the show so enjoyable in many ways, they have hot on a winning cast in that respect.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm betting it's going to bug me pretty hard just because Aramis is my favorite. I hate inconsistencies in characterizations. True enough that no one can be perfect, it's just that they've shown Aramis's flaws so far as being in context with his sense of honor and respect. I don't want them to take that away for the sake of a plot.

And, I should probably just wait to see the episode before I get all annoyed with it. lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, I'd say wait and see it rather than worrying about it really, I don't think it's as bigger flaw as it maybe comes across once you take in to consideration that the women know the score.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 17:03

As an Aramis fan too, I hope he is not "out of character" in this episode :( And I don't know if you can say much about it, to clarify things for me, but what do you mean exactly by "the women know the score" ? It is because he seduces rich women in order to collect enough money to pay the fee for the competition ?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, doesn't feel realistic at all. To try to make the relationship between them legitimate is not going to be a matter of choice because they love each other and want to be together. They can't pretend she isn't married (regardless of how we might want to see it through our modern eyes). We don't know anything really about the husband or what circumstances led him to marry Constance in the first place. And in the time period, in this very Catholic country, the risk and the consideration of reputation for both D'Artagnan and Constance is great.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Here's what the Radio Times says about the situation in their preview, just to cover my back on the reveal of info, lol.

"This episode's oddity is that when Porthos and Aramis need to raise funds they effectively turn gigolos for wealthy widows. Is that the Musketeers’ code of honour?"

    ReplyDelete
  33. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 17:11

So you wouldn't say that this episode is another "investigation of the week" right ? I really am into character developement and, as you said, character driven plots. And with the competition thing, I was afraid that the story wouldn't evolve during this episode, which doesn't seem to be the case, now that I've read your preview. I hope to see more interesting development and revelations on episode 9, and the finale of course. I hope the trailer seemed interesting as well. Thank you for your previews, as always ^^

    ReplyDelete
  34. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 17:16

Yeah, I've read that too but I never agree with their previews, so... I imagine they seduce (or... more, maybe. hum) women (widows ! omg) to have money... Oh. I see why the "gigolos" now. lol
But, I don't know why, it doesn't bother me that much. Maybe this is not the most respectable way, I agree, but as long as they're not insulting or rude with those women, I'm kind-of-oooook.... I guess. Well : we'll see ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm almost convinced that her husband will survive until season two. Depending on how it is written, I don't mind that much. I think "forbidden love" is a good story with lots of possible plots that could carry over to the next season. I just hope that if Constance is still with her husband, that she and d'Artagnan get to develop their relationship enough.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 17:45

(OAP : Obligatory Aramis Paragraph he he)

I think so, yes. It looks like episode 9 will be a huge one for Aramis. I hope I'll be a great one ^^ (From the trailer, does it seem like it ? A tiny yes or no, pleaaaase ? If you can ;)

And "a few cute fiddling with his hat and cocky lil smiles" ? Hhh...

    ReplyDelete
  37. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 17:46

You have a point here "regardless of how we might want to see it through our modern eyes" Well said.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He totally has a thing for his hat.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm excited about the Aramis and Porthos interaction. Should be fun!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The trailer looks to be fairly balanced character wise, but I think his and Anne's story will be the central issue to it from what we know.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Agreed! I also don't think d'Artagnan is going to find the situation honorable. I believe he would want them to have a fresh start rather than running away from a mess that would ruin her reputation. I could also see him choosing to nurse a heartache rather than remove Constance from her marriage. His financial prospects are not very good at the moment, and he doesn't have a home or livelihood to offer her.
The writers will want us to root for the couple throughout the series including hardships so that when they do end up "together" it is worth the wait. So I still think that they are creating drama and angst at the moment rather than establishing a solid relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am so intrigued by Anne! Excited to see her in episode nine. Not sure how long/far any flirtation with Aramis would last. So dangerous! But it should be interesting regardless.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Agreed. Whether their story ends in joy or tragedy in this version, I don't see the journey being easy, or swift. And though I'm not a shipper, I think they've made Constance a wise woman, one I'd like to root for. It will be interesting to see how they show her handling this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. LuckyNumberSLVN12 March 2014 at 18:47

    Fiiiiine indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Agreed. Spot on. And as another already pointed out, well said.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm sure you're right.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think episode 10 is gonna be an exciting one!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Luke Pasqualino has confirmed that what D'artagnan said to Milady in episode 1 will come back to bite him..

    ReplyDelete
  49. Kinda taking that to mean the show isn't going to just brush aside those impediments or the realities of their situation. Which is smart.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Is Lebarge important in that he's there to catalize D'Artagnan's push for his commission? Or more like someone D'Artagnan knew before he met the Musketeers? (If you can answer)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't like it when they turn the charmer of the group into the cliched lecherous lothario, or when they make any character a caricature against what we've seen before. The Musketeers has done well presenting layers with most of their characters. For them to stop being cognizant of that would be the part I'd worry about, in this or any other episode.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Spoiler hangman: Since we know the word with the "k" is Musketeers, I'll go ahead and add the obvious that the word starting with the nice large capital C is probably Cardinal. So, the spoiler clearly has something to do with both The Musketeers (tough stretch for a show called The Musketeers) and the Cardinal.

As any spoiler hint about the cardinal is needed in my book, it'll be grand to get to the rest of this.

    ReplyDelete
  53. He did indeed. I read that interview too. He and his honor are going to be in a quandary.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks! I'm so happy to know we'll get more amazing D'Artagnan and Constance moments!

Sandi, was Constance in the tv promo for episode 9? I didn't see her in any of the promotional photos for that particular episode. Thanks again!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think D'Artagnan will try to get money for Constance in episode 8. In the promotional photos for this episode, he is seen giving her a bag of money. So I think he'll try to help her financially for all the reasons you have mentioned above. Also in the tv promo, it was shown that D'Artagnan suddenly wanted to make more money. At any means necessary. So I think he realizes that her situation is very tricky and difficult.

I still have a feeling that we'll see more of her husband's true colors in the upcoming episodes. Perhaps, he'll be an evil man. Keep in mind that Milady came to see him for whatever reason. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Bonacieux become evil...

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think that's why D'Artagnan will try to get more money for Constance. We did see photos of him giving her a bag of money. I think it's a start. I have a lot of respect for the creator of the show. I loved Primeval. Adrian knows how to develop couples and romances. He also knows how to write character driven storylines. So I'm looking forward to what he has in store for D'Artagnan and Constance's love story. I'm already loving everything about this pairing. So I'm excited about this season and the next.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sandi, you mean it's clear that Constance's heart belongs to D'Artagnan? :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think there is a huge reason as to why the writers showed so many similarities and parallels between Constance's situation and Fleur's in episode 7 right before D'Artagnan/Constance got together. One of these women was able to escape that depressing life of living with a man you don't love...who you were forced to marry. While, the other is trying to survive/make the best of whatever life threw at her. I did read in the description for Constance that she was married off at 15. Well, that's depressing to say the least. From what I gather, she had no choice in the matter. None of her reasons for marrying Bonacieux included love or admiration, I'm sure...I mean, Fleur assumed she even hated Bonacieux. Also, she never calls him by his first name. To me, that's not intimacy.

In terms of the husband, I just don't see the point of keeping him. Look at the first 7 episodes thus far, he was basically non existent. We didn't even really see him.

I still think by episode 10, Constance will be freed of Bonacieux. I have no idea how. But I just have a feeling.

Anyway, it's all only my personal opinion. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I believe D'artagnan - and all the Musketeers - need money to enter this tournament thing, which is why Aramis and Porthas are also trying to raise funds by doing what they do with the women in the episode. He's not raising money for Constance, not at this stage anyway.

The money is apparently given to D'artagnan by Milady, who has her own agenda of course.

    ReplyDelete
  60. No, I'm afraid that she wasn't. Most of the action seems to be taking place outside of Paris though.

    ReplyDelete
  61. That bag of money isn't for Constance, we saw Milady give it to him in the trailer for the challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It's obvious what everyone involved in the situation feels by the end of the episode :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hmm, he's important to the lesson that D'Artagnan has to learn in the episode, mainly due to the reason he has been arrested in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Just about to update it now :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. You could be on to something there with Bonacieux, no-one has mentioned so far in the comments about something I mentioned in passing the preview but didn't expand on...

    ReplyDelete
  66. Another case of his rashness needing to be reigned in then, he is a young man who needs to learn when to promise things and when not to, and who to trust and who not to.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm assuming you are referring to the "relationships from the book" getting underway in away we haven't seen. Which makes me think Bonacieux will very likely be drawn closer to the cardinal and/or Milady, and could very well take the role he did in the book.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Sandi, you sneak! :)

  69. Of course there were parallels with Constance and Fleur. But I don't think that's the point at play here. I don't think anyone is saying they believe Constance married for love, or that they feel she admires her husband.

I think what they're saying is that in this time period, marriages were often for practical reasons, as much if not more than they were love or romance. Financial need, social standing, religious standing, safety, alliances - these were all pretty important issues that probably led to Constance being put in that marriage in the first place, and that still exist as reasons Constance can't just tell her husband she's leaving.

The situation creates a great deal of risk for Constance and d'Artagnan, and isn't likely to be a simple matter of collecting money and running away together.

If her husband plays the role he does in the book, I could see him not lasting through to next season but I can see it going the other way too.

  70. We did see Milady give him that pouch of money. From the pic of him and Constance where he is holding the money and they look to be arguing, I'm assuming they're arguing about it because of Milady. Since she scared Constance earlier in the season I feel like Constance would question D'Artagnan's taking money from her.

  71. I wouldn't mind seeing him take on the role he plays in the book, but it'd be nice if they gave more nuance to it. Bonacieux is such a caricature in the book he seems unreal at times.

  72. Depending on how they do it, I wouldn't mind them keeping her around a bit longer (though not forever). Think I'd like to see a plot where Lord de Winter does show up in pursuit to avenge his brother, etc.

I wonder if they'll kill the cardinal off, or if they'll have him fade into the background somehow for the second season, but still mention his presence while having other villains take center stage.

  73. I do wonder if they have maybe left it a little late on, but it's better than not at all I think.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Aww, surely a tease instead :( :p hehe

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yeah, I think I'd kinda like the Cardinal to fade into the background for a while maybe, go into hiding perhaps due to the Musketeers knowing too much?

  76. “I can’t risk my future for you, I have far too much to lose”

Either Constance to d'Artagnan - or d'Artagnan to Constance.

  77. All I can say with any certainty is that after this episode it is very clear what each of the characters involved in the story feel about the others. Whether they go the more traditional route of them just having respect from a far for each other or actually making them a couple, I just don't know I'm afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  78. When you say having respect for eachother do you mean love?? Haha im just trying to find something, anything to keep my ship alive!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. They seem to love each other don't they, so I guess so :)

I don't know if that has been asked before, but during d'Artagnan's "training sessions", Athos is taking D'Artagnan under his wing as you said, but is he learning some things from Treville, or the other musketeers as well ? Or is it just from Athos ? You've mentioned Monkey Island, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to love those scenes with Athos and d'Artagnan =D

  81. Hhhmm, well, this certainly thickens the plot! Ha. If Bonacieux is certainly going to be a bit devious, I wish we had gotten to know him a little more and seen things develop over the series. Oh, well. I was wondering if the episode 10 summary regarding Milady refers to him - Milady revisiting her dark past puts Constance in danger. That seems a bit of stretch considering he has yet to prove interesting, but how else would Constance be involved in Milady's past? Depending on how this turns out, he might not survive the series after all.

A few days off and now I am back to crazy theorizing!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hehe join the club, we're all doing that the last few days XD

I'm wondering if the Sean Pertwee is the thing in Milady's dark past? He seems to be the one who has kidnapped her going by the photos, but then they could be a feign to make us think that?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah, I figured he was from her past as well...but I'm not sure how that directly involves Constance unless it is just a typical "kidnap the lady love" plot line.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah, we thought she'd be the asset held for him to deal with Athos but that really doesn't seem to tie in with the press release does it. I can't see D'Artagnan bumping off all three of the other Musketeers on his own, he's good with a sword but not that good, and the others have their strengths too. It's puzzling isn't it?

  87. Have you seen episodes 8,9 and 10? Sorry for asking so many questions haha

    ReplyDelete
  88. I see them the Tuesday before TX :)

  89. Hangman.

I think the first part of the fist sentence is: "There is a subtle difference..."

First part of the second sentence: "For Treville it is..." something something "the Musketeers" something "they are the better unit" yadda yadda.

Last sentence: "Cardinal" something something "of his Red Guards" something something "cash reward."

Ha - that's my guess so far anyway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Pretty good :) Do you have a good hangman solver?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm going to feel stupid for asking this. What's a hangman solver?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Okay, just googled hangman solver. It's very tempting. But no, this morning my guess on the words was just me having extra time in my hotel room before I head off to work.

  93. It's a tool like this http://nmichaels.org/hangsolve.py

  94. :) Hopefully someone else will now come along and tell me what the rest of it is.

Looking forward to the episode, but unfortunately I won't get to watch it tonight as I'll be on a plane. Jealousy. Can't wait for everyone to give their assessment of it.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm hoping it will be cracked before the episode airs.

Shame you won't be around later this evening, I will look forward to your postings later on in the week though, they are always a good read :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Thanks. Hope it's a good one. And hope someone cracks this before the episode also.

Ooo - and I think that other word that is almost filled in in the first sentence is "learders." Maybe. Now, off to work. :)

  97. the honour of the Musketeers?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Looking forward to tonight's episode, I hope it's a good one for D'artagnan, not just for stuff relating to Constance but for him moving towards becoming a Musketeer and actually having some dramatic stuff to do.

  100. Bingo! First sentence has been cracked, I will go and fill it in :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. Very, very, very close! All the letters from the polls are in the paragraph *hint*

    ReplyDelete
  102. I think you will enjoy it on that front, though for on one front you may want to give him a slap up side the head for not realise what is going on with one character :(. But, that's where the drama comes in I guess, lol

“Porthos my friend, I think it’s time we went fishing, for a patroness”, Aramis maybe ?

“You have natural talent, but too often you let your emotions run away with you, talent won’t keep you alive if you let your heart rule your head” Athos to d'Artagnan ?

“You know what I like about cutting people’s throats? It stops them talking”, Labarge ?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Cool, I want him to have some drama, even if that drama doesn't always paint him in a good light.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Do we know if constance will be in episode 9 at all? I hate knowing that d'artagnan doesnt know she still loves him! I'm starting to wonder if her husband will be in on her kidnapping. And how would d'artagnan find out about her kidnap if he no longer sees her or visits her? Thats why I thought maybe he finds out about her lying for his safety and goes to see her but instead realises shes gone? Or do you think someone would just tell him? With athos holding a woman hostage I dont know whether it would be milady or the counts daughter...or someone else. It couldnt be constance could it? Actually thats just a bit too far fetched! All I hope is that d'artagnan learns the truth and constance isnt harmed! What do you think will happen?
