  1. Oh dear, the reviewer for Radio Times magazine isn't impressed with the show's treatment of women, citing Aramis and Porthas "behaving like gigolos" in episode 8, in order to raise funds. I do hope the show doesn't cheapen Aramis - and women, as far as the reviewer is concerned - by having them 'constantly' fall for the Musketeers' charms. Anthony Hodges has described the series as being "very romantic" but I wonder if he's gone a bit too far in this area?

  2. Oh dear, that's not good to hear. I will be watching a bit later on myself, I have had some concerns about some of the directions of the relationships the last week or so, so this isn't great news but I will try to keep an open mind for now.

They've never wrote a good review for The Musketeers, it is obvious they don't like it anyway. I won't pay any attention. I can't wait for your preview for episode 8 Sandi =D

  4. I went and had a read of it a little while a go, gotta say I fundamentally disagree with their take on the female roles in general on the show so far, can't see how they can say that about most of them at all? Hello, Constance, Flea, Agnes, Anne, even Milady and Ninon weren't what they have stated there really imo, lol.

I started the episode about an hour ago, but am only about 30 minutes in as I'm back and forth to it, but I can see where they have got the idea they have from a scene that happens early on, I'm not entirely comfortable with part of it either. But to base an entire review on it while ignoring what really happens afterwards and what looks like a will be a lesson learned, oy vey! *rolls eyes*

  5. Yeah, I don't agree with their assessment at all. It makes me wonder what they do want for or from the female characters on the show (and I am typically very critical of this).

While the show doesn't always pass the Bechdel test, short of changing a show called "The Musketeers" which, should justifiably be focused on The Musketeers, to a show that centers fully on the female characters instead, I can't see how the reviewer there would be happy.

While the show is bound to misstep in this area on occasion (and some of the things they have Constance wear seem ridiculous), for the most part, the women in the show have shown strength, intelligence, and self-determination. Though yes, while being trapped in situations that challenge and inhibit that self-determination, and/or that show period-typical attitudes towards women.

Yet to not show period-typical attitudes towards women (even occasionally from our guys, e.g. d'Artagnan telling Constance he doesn't need protection from a woman), or to show women who are perfectly happy with their circumstances (or even women who are in perfectly happy circumstances) in this time period would also do women an injustice.

Geeze. And sorry for the run-on sentences. :)

  6. While I stand by what I said down below, I don't want romance to become the main aspect of the show, and occasionally could do with a bit less of it (even if the source material is referred to as the d'Artagnan romances).

Hodges probably didn't mean this, but romantic, as in romanticized heros and journeys/adventures is more what I prefer. If they do go too far in the soap opera love direction, ehh, let's just say it won't thrill me, but I really haven't been worried about that so far. I've been enjoying the ride.

  7. I had to look up Bechdel test but, yeah, I agree with you.

  8. It isn't a fool proof method for sizing up the portrayal of women, but it is an interesting measuring stick to consider.
