  1. Not as fab as last week's episode, but that was a pretty special episode imo. I didn't quite warm to the Comtesse as much as would have liked to, not entirely sure why but it was an ambitious plot to fit in to one episode maybe, two people diametrically changing their views on relationships in such a short space of time in each others company needs more room to breath imo.

Good to see the Cardinal be more evil at last...loved Porthos' line about why they were bothering to hurry to rescue him as they left the mortuary, more of these kind of reactions to him are needed too imo. Was glad to see Milady at work, really liked her presence in the second half of the episode, especially her court appearance and her frank discussions with a bedridden Cardinal.

Really looking forward to next week's episode based on that trailer!

  2. Lol, D'artagnan and Constance appeared to be into each other quite a bit there... :) It wasn't the greatest of build-ups - the pair of them being off screen for much of the last two or three episodes and D'artagnan not exactly showing any obvious signs of liking Constance in that way - but I can see their chemistry and I suppose you can see his growing affection for her over the course of the series so far, so I'm not going to complain. I just hope next week's episode is a good one for D'artagnan because he needs it.

I enjoyed seeing Milady again and the Cardinal being interesting again as he thought he was dying.

Quote of the night "Why are we running? This is the Cardinal we're talking about"

Joint second place - Athos shouting ( really shouting ) in Court about how Milady is not to be trusted and D'artagnan telling Constance ( again ) that she's the best woman he knows.

  3. I thought it was a good episode, but like you didn't think it lived up to last week's (which I thought was marvellous). However, I did like the Cardinal's role in this story, and loved his "How very dark ages" comment! I also liked seeing the M's feeling conflicted about rushing to his aid. Milady really is a piece of work isn't she?

Aramis' interaction with Ninon and their conversation about faith was interesting. I also loved the brief scene with Aramis and Queen Anne, and her reaction to his having given the cross she gave him to another woman.

  4. For obvious reasons, I'm going to say this is my favorite episode thus far!

Twitter and tumblr are all still going crazy with happiness for that D'Artagnan and Constance scene! AMAZING!!! People are happy! :) YES!!!!

Also, I'm happily surprised that it was D'Artagnan who said ILY to Constance. We've seen more of Constance's feelings for him lately. So I figured it would be her. So HAPPY it was D'Artagnan since he wasn't as expressive before as Constance has been!!! YAY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I was surprised too! Especially after all of our theorizing this week. However, I think it was done well, and d'Artagnan did love Constance first in the book. I think they kept his attraction more subtle because he is a "gascon farm boy" who viewed her as unattainable. I think my favorite part had to be the sweet, vulnerable look on Constance's face. Tamla Kari did a nice job in that scene especially since she and the writers have spent six previous episodes promoting her feisty and fierce personality. I just hope that the writers handle the rest just as well. As many have said before, adultery is a tricky one to sell for a hero/heroine. Have you noticed the picture of Constance's husband from the next episode? He looks menacing! Oh,no!

  6. Overall, I enjoyed it. Really liked the parts with Athos, and it was good to see Milady back.
Do you think we will see Ninon again? Maybe another season? Her interaction with Athos made me wonder.
Looking forward to next week! We need a strong d'Artagnan episode. I see Milady gave him the money! Hhhmm. Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It was a slower episode but I enjoyed Athos and
his story in this one. His conversations. His regrets. His shouting at Milady.

  8. I felt this was a good Athos episode. Though the plotting could have been tighter, I think it may be a good lead-in to the increased conflict towards the finale, with Milady and the Cardinal hopefully really becoming a factor.

Some standout I’m-clearly-an-Aramis-fan moments: Aramis as the medic, with real medical know-how. Nice. Aramis fighting with a book. Yay. Sad for the book. I love books. But, still, yay. ;) Aramis saying to Athos, “She was protecting the girl, not deceiving you.” Because even though he doesn’t know all of Athos’s history, he clearly still understands him well, and I like that.

From a this-is-a-tv-series perspective, I felt d’Artagnan and Constance getting together came early and was a tad rushed. I hate to say it, but it made me wonder if they’re going to end up killing Constance off after all. The show could of course play with the audience and keep bringing up impediments to drive them apart and then back together and then apart again. Still, them getting together this early has me wondering. Of course, as someone pointed out in one of the threads, since the show doesn't seem to have decided whether they are gearing themselves to be a more adult show, or a more youth-friendly adventure, allowing an important character die might not be in their wheelhouse. Which may not be a bad thing.

  9. Athos's shouting, and general freak-out, was very good.

  10. Agree with you about the sense of choice being the factor here. I do still think the show needs to take a moment at least to show us more of the kind of man her husband actually is (though maybe we'll get that next week), and may have to be cautious where they take this moving forward. Sneaking around indefinitely is problematic. They're still in a very trapped and questionable situation. The choices they make to get out of that, or to step deeper into it, of course, is the drama of the show, I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I also think we'll learn more about her husband next week according to the promo pix. And yes, there is a HUGE difference between choosing to marry someone vs being forced to marry someone. I mean, it wasn't her personal choice. She doesn't love him. I think I read in the character description that she had to marry him at the age of 15. So I think perhaps we'll learn more about him. Either way, it's not a genuine marriage.

I also don't see D'Artagnan and Constance sneaking around. I think she will want to leave her husband and be with D'Artagnan. That's when problems will arise because I don't think her husband will let her. D'Artagnan and Constance are in love and obviously want to be together. So no way is she staying married to the other guy.

By the way, for any of the D'Artagnan and Constance fans who are reading this post, you guys can find a LOT of new gif sets here with the epic new scene:

  12. I *loved* it when Aramis made that comment to Athos. Even though he doesn't know all the specifics about what happened with Athos and his Milady, he totally knows *Athos* and that he'd be sensitive to feeling like a woman he's interested in was dishonest with him. I love it when the show gives us bits like that. Bits that just show the history the characters have with each other and show how deep their brotherhood runs and how well they know each other without having to say very much at all. I love it!

  13. Re- the lack of Constance's husband, I wonder if the producers did this on purpose so that the audience wouldn't have a chance to get to know him and therefore not develop any kind of attachment to him, considering his wife is about to embark on an affair? (which may stop once D'artagnan becomes a Musketeer or because - with Milady threatening Constance's life - he doesn't want to put her at risk again and realises she's safer with her husband. I know he hasn't come across as being a good husband but at the same time, he's not come across as being cruel either.

I agree that because Constance didn't marry for love, it makes her affair with D'artagnan a bit more understandable, she's a woman with passionate needs like many others but has lived in a man's world all her life and had limited choices.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Probably a silly thing to mention, but I just re-watched it, and I loved Aramis's teasing/sarcastic comment to Porthos -- "One day we'll sit down and I'll explain women to you." -- and how they all kind of crack up afterwards. XD

    ReplyDelete
  15. I must admit when Constance and d,Artagnan finally kissed at the end I thought about time lol . I agree with Bailey I thought this was a good episode for Athos and you could completely understand his emotions in this first with the Contessa and then seeing Milady that must of rocked him but the Contessa was right he need's to tread carefully where she is concerned.

I loved the little scene between Aramis and Anne you can sense the attraction between the two . I also enjoyed the interaction between the guys this week with both understanding and teasing esp from Aramis , all in all it was a episode I liked and enjoyed.

  16. Okay...I give up. Mylady just doesn't work for me, and I think the problem is mostly the actress, who is totally miscast for the role. I just don't buy her lines which I guess are designed to make her look vulnerable (like the claim of being already in hell) - or fatalistic - but are delivered in away that it sounds like the actress is falling asleep. By far the weakest point of the episode. Especially the way everyone just ignored Athos claims that she isn't who she claims to be bothered me.
The feminist angle was surprisingly well done. This can go so wrong, especially if you design a character exceptionally outspoken. But details like he not wanting to marry didn't have anything to do with her looking down on men (she even said that she had a couple of very acceptable suitors), but with her not being ready to give up everything she own (meaning she was not against marriage, but about the conditions attached to it) go a long way to make her somewhat aggressive approach understandable and to understand the plight of woman during that time.
The ending bothered me though...it was a little bit rushed....and that she lost everything but it was sold as luck because she is still alive didn't really set that well with me either.
I think they handled the romance part of the episode quite well, though I'm not as into this aspect of the show as some others seem to be. But I liked that they explored another aspect of Constance.
lol of the ep: "This is the cardinal we are talking about. Why are we running?"

Hello ! I really loved this episode ! Actually, I wasn't expecting it to be this good. I might have a little preference for the 6th one (imo it was better paced), but "A rebellious woman" was full of very good things.

For once, they've focused on Athos a little more, I was looking forward to it. Seeing him troubled and awkward when talking to Ninon was quite a change. That scene with the 4 musketeers interrupting the class was really good.

The acting was really good, again, from the main cast especially. Ryan Gage is awesome, as always since a few ep. I liked the Cardinal in this episode. We've seen more of his dark side and ambitious nature. And the "poisoning scene" frightened me! I love the scenes between Aramis, Athos and Porthos. The three of them always seem very natural around each other, their banter and humour, I like it ! Porthos made me laugh a lot in this one. When Aramis... ho wait. He deserves a paragraph of his own :

When Aramis tells Athos that Ninon was not deceiving him (but protecting Fleur), it is like he gets that his friend doesn't trust women anymore, even though he doesn't know the full story (tell them about Milady Athos, dammit !). Aramis was so sweet with Ninon, without trying to charm her at all. He really likes strong women, and it doesn't seem forced at all. Plus when he talks about "his own god", it explained it all. A contradiction indeed. The scene with the necklace was really good. When Queen Anne noticed it around Ninon's neck, it was a very subtle moment. I love the interactions between Aramis and Anne. They are very well written imo, letting them time to build an attraction and all. And we don't even know if something will happen between them yet, this
forbidden love. I like that it is not foregone (even though I like them together).

Aaaaaaand, there we go, to the things from the episode I liked a little less. It seems to be a very unpopular opinion, but I thought the D'Artagnan and Constance's scene at the end was quite "forced"... I would have prefered they stopped at his "I love you" realisation in this episode, and save the kiss for a future episode. Building more tension between the two. Ok, the "teach me how to shoot" scene was kiiiiind-of-sexy, but maybe because of the acting I don't fell it... And don't get me wrong, I think Luca Pasqualino is quite a good actor, but for some reasons, during his scenes with Constance/Tamla Kari, he doesn't show "love". More something like camaraderie. D'Artagnan surely thinks she is pretty (he is a man, and young so he doesn't bother hiding lol), but I didn't feel attraction between them. Not yet. (And I don't want to sound alarming, but the fact that they've kissed and more so soon might not be a good sign for Constance...)

Wow ! I didn't expect to write that much about this episode. This show is really time-consuming. "Chronophage" as we say.

  18. This was my favorite Musketeers episode thus far, and I gave it an "awesome" in the poll. I rarely rank any show "awesome" in the SpoilerTV polls. I loved the verbal sparring and attraction between Ninon and Athos, and I hope that we see her again next season. Constance was her wonderful fiery and compassionate self. Aramis was kind to give comfort and to show the true meaning of God and faith which the visiting envoy and Richelieu tried so hard to pervert in order to further their own interests and ambitions. The one black mark in an otherwise stellar episode was the way that Richelieu was successful in stealing Ninon's estate. Blah!!! Bottom line: I wish Athos were ready to heal from the wounds Milady left him with because he and Ninon would be a fine match.

My ranking of Musketeer episodes thus far is as follows:

    1. "A Rebellious Woman
    2. "The Homecoming"
    3. "The Exiles"
    4. "Commodities"
    5. "Friends and Enemies"
    6. "The Good Soldier"
    7. "Sleight of Hand"

I'm looking forward to the final 3 episodes of the season as well.

  19. Looks like we're on the same page about a lot of things.

And my personal bias is apparently that Aramis always deserves his own paragraph. ;)

  20. I don't think you're alone in not being as into the romance side of this show. I think there are at least a few of us us around here somewhere. "Non-shippers" or whatever it's called.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That totally cracked me up. The facial expressions on the three of them. Well played.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, the pouch of money is interesting, it looks like he and Constance fight over it next episode too, can't wait to see what happens really, should be interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes loved that courthouse scene, one of my favourite of the episode I think, great passion to it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm afraid I didn't see anything on my timeline about D'Artagnan and Constance except for one from the BBC, it was more Cardinal based from Doctor Who fans, quite a bit of love for John Lynch from my Merlin mates and then the rest was mainly about Athos. I think it just depends on who you follow though really for the kind of comments you get to see, I can well imagine that fans of them were very, very happy to see the scene between them last night though. I imagine it was the kind of passion they were hoping to see and I don't think it disappointed on that score Glad you enjoyed it :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I enjoyed the Cardinal and Milady scenes, I don't completely understand their relationship, what keeps her at his side, but I enjoyed her petulance, and her cynicism on religion in this episode rounded off all the opposing views on that particular subject the characters had nicely, which in turn brought her into the fold more, so to speak, for me.

The romance feels a bit rushed for me too, but then I'd be quite happy without it for now anyway and keep it until season 2 with just a little flirting for now. It's strange, I usually get annoyed at will they/won't they dragged out story lines that for a change I'm a bit nonplussed at this turn of events, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ha, I loved that line too XD

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not sure how I feel about the Aramis & Anne relationship, how far do you think they will be taking it? I really would like to have more closure on Adele, but at present I just can't see it happening before Capaldi leaves unfortunately :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm glad Milady was back in this episode, it showed that as stoic as Athos manages to be about his past most of the time she can still get to him like that and push his buttons so he loses control. I bet he hates that about himself too, the poor guy, and I loved that Aramis and Porthos recognised that in him and didn't push the point too hard afterwards but helped him solve the problem that needed solving instead.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wasn't keen on the ending, Ninon seemed to accept that men worked out how her life would be, including taking away all her belonging much like a marriage would, and went off on her way in a fairly docile manner. I understand that the Cardinal needed a win in the bag at this point in the season, but I felt that it weakened her and her principles somewhat.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Again, Santiago Cabrera has great line delivery.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I loved Ryan again this week, his comic timing was fab wasn't it, he cracks me me. Even in the poisoning scene he was actually quite funny in his combination of selfishness and concern, and I loved his aside about warts and flying broomsticks too XD Really enjoying King Louis the last couple of episodes :D

Agree with Bailey, every comment should have a dedicated Aramis paragraph, in fact it is something I intend to implement from now on ;) I especially enjoyed the little sketch between him and Porthos in the morgue where they were checking the breath of the dead thief, it feels like it's been a while since we've had a Aramis/Porthos moment so it was refreshing to see them have a little argy bargy joke :D

lol yes, Chronophage indeed, I am away from home today and a bit busy, this page has been open for about 2 hours now while I am back and forth trying and read/respond to all the posts this afternoon in between other tasks! XD

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am the same on the polls, I can probably count the times I have voted Awesome on both hand in the years I have been here, I am usually far too critical, lol. I'd like to see Ninon back with a new plan to get what's owed her back tbh, I feel that she deserves that too. I would also like to see how Athos and her spark off each other further down the line of his healing process of the Milady situation, as I think that will be addressed before too long.

The last three episodes are looking fantastic from the press releases/photos aren't they?! I'm impatiently waiting for tomorrow morning so I can get hold of the next episode, very intrigued to know what is happening between Athos/Milady/D'artagnan after the trailer, lol.

You are so lucky to watch the episodes one week before the rest of us. And the sneak peek looks so promising !

    ReplyDelete
  34. LuckyNumberSLVN10 March 2014 at 17:20

Yes Aramis and Porthos banter are always the best. Sometimes the actors exchange looks that add so much to the characters, even though it is subtle, or even when they're in the background of a scene.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It'll be interesting to see what you think of next week's episode in terms of D'artagnan's development, both as an individual character ( especially as an individual character ) and his relationship with Constance. As others have said, I think D'artagnan and Constance's relationship is reaching its 'passionate peak' now because it may be abruptly taken away from them by the series end - either by Milady or by Constance herself choosing her husband over D'artagnan.

I also hope to see ( as it appears from the trailer ) Athos acting more as a mentor towards him because scenes like this build secondry relationships. We already know Athos is meant to be the greatest swordsman in the group, with D'artagnan showing early promise to be just as good.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think you may have hit the nail on the head with what I have been feeling about Constance and D'Artagnan but haven't been able to find the words for. I also don't really watch for the romance, especially in an action based show, and I could quite happily live without it at all But I'd rather it was done without jarring me out of the action, if possible, if it is done at all. I am also finding myself talking about it far more often than I would normally too, so in that regard, yeah, it's not sitting right enough with me.

As for the Aramis situation, again spot on observation ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes, they are so comfortable with each other in that regard

    ReplyDelete
  38. I haven't had a chance to go see it yet, will go do so in a few mins and post over there, you have me intrigued now :o

  39. LuckyNumberSLVN10 March 2014 at 17:29

I'd like to see that too. I don't know, maybe Milady could say something about Adele's death ? I don't even know if she knows about it though. Every time they're in the same room (Aramis and the Cardinal), there is not even a glance from Richelieu, to show that he knows he is "The Aramis" (he is The Aramis for many of us he he). There can't be that many men called Aramis around, can it ? And no doubt now that he knows his name. It was at least twice said in front of him.

It seems strange to me that something from the very first ep. would have been kept for a theoretical second season (when it has been written)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it's going to be an interesting one for both D'Artagnan and Athos, I will reveal what I can ofc :D I was wondering of people would be interested in a spoiler anagram this week, maybe I could set one up along these lines if possible?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree...I wouldn't have minded so much if she had been a little bit more aggressive about agreeing. But she acted as if she had won when in fact she lost her financial independence, her good name, her freedom and her power.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes, it will be very interesting to see how far and in what direction the writers take the Aramis / Anne relationship. I don't think they will make Aramis Louis XIV's Dad (although you never know!), there is only so much leeway when you are dealing with actual historical characters. We shall have to wait and see.

As for the Adele storyline, they did at least have Aramis state in Ep. 2 that he was moving on from her because she had abandoned him in favour of the Cardinal (the conclusion he drew from her not being present at the Cardinal's townhouse, where they were due to meet and from being told by a servant that she was at Richelieu's country estate), so the writers didn't just forget about the relationship. I still think Adele's murder could come to light (presumably she had friends and relatives who would start to ask questions when she disappeared completely and let's face it, everyone seems to know everyone else in this version of seventeenth century Paris!), and if it does, that would be a huge plot development, which could play a very big part in the denouement of the first season's storylines.

I'm so sorry to ask, but I don't know the term : What is "a spoiler anagram" ?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I still hold out hope that something may come up at the nunnery in ep 9, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up at the same time as I don't want to be disappointed. I think it's looking pretty good for the Musketeers/Constance/Milady from what we've speculated already from the photos/press release, but they are being very quiet on what is happening to the Cardinal and his exit.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I kind of hope that it doesn't go as far as him fathering Louis XIV, though there were a lot of differences in real life between him and Louis XIII for sure and there has been talk all through history about his parenthood. I'd prefer to see him being her rock though, giving her faith and guidance in her life when she needs it, he is a fantastic listener which can be a great help n times of need. I'm not really into lots of messy love dramas though I'm afraid which probably has a lot to do with my feelings on it though too, I want action, muskets and sword fights, lol :)

I hope it does come up at some point about Adele, even if it is after the Cardinal has left I think that it would be something I'd like to see Aramis have to work through as a character, maybe next season?

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's where I make up a spoiler sentence but only give out the number of letters to each word, then make a poll to vote for a letter. The winning letter then gets added to the sentence, and a new poll with letters made, and so on. Until someone cracks what the spoiler says.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think it was a mixture of jealous and a bit shocked and embarrassed to be shown up in public like that by him. It was very childish of him wasn't it, though very funny as part of the audience to watch, lol.

  51. Had a major problem with the reverse sexism of this episode. If a man had behaved as madame de la roque had towards the musketeers - calling them boors or saying men are all stupid or a woman had 'admitted the superiority of men' the show would be shut down. And any boys watching this show just had their confidence needlessly knocked by some pathetic sexist writer

This is reminiscent of the bbc's last sexist endeavour at prime time to bash young boys... the doctor the widow and the wardrobe
