  1. Oh. My. God. That's all there is to say about this...I suspected it but never thought it could possibly happen that way. OHMYGOD.

  2. It was a great episode. So glad Robin's mom showed up! Figured she would.

Were there implying The Mother's dying or that Ted's mom died before his wedding? I know what they want us to think, but I'm going to believe option number two.

And aww at Ted and Barney's talk at the end. And hee at them all watching the movie.

  3. Pretty sure it's just a red herring, tbh.

  4. Please let this be a red herring ... please let this be a red herring ... please let this be a red herring.

  5. Very very true, although it'd be a hella one. I'm trying out scenarios in my head but coming up blank...just can't see the point/purpose of misleading people about it...

  6. I'm choosing to live in denial about what they were implying. It makes things easier.

  7. Annoyed that 'Marshall finding out about Ted moving to Chicago' was a throw away line revealing it happened off screen.
Really hope the writers are trying to mislead us re: the mother being dead. If she actually is, there are no words to describe how bitter I will be.

  8. Damn that was good but super sad. Regardless of whether its the mother, Ted's wife, who is dying or if its Ted actual mother that passes away before his wedding that is just sad in both situations. They keep saying their not going the direction of the mother being dead but I don't know the way the story is told primarily by Ted and his reaction in that scene something tells me there is at least a pretty good 50/50 chance that the mother is actually deceased and he is talking to his kids about her death. Now I am both touched and sad

  9. maybe its a health scare and they went away for the weekend to get their minds off it. Couold explain being sentimental and worrying something could possibly happen. thats why the mother tells him not to live in his story and Ted is tearful. i just keep going back to the kids reaction to the story. if their mother had just died why are they so impatient and not wanting to hear the story

  10. I don't think it's going to be a miss direct. It would tie everything together, especially Ted's retelling of what he would have done if he knew he was 45 days away from meeting the mother. I know it's sad, but with a show like this would we really be happy if it ended with no wrap up as to why older Ted is telling his kids the story in the first place?

  11. I really liked this episode it had sweet moments and funny moments it had it all. I'm so glad that Robin's mom showed up I knew she would but it was nice that she did come. I really liked the Ted/Mother moments, The Wedding Bride Too loved the edition of Narshall and I loved, absolutely loved the Barney and Barney & Robin moments which were so sweet I almost teared up at the. Haha, and Lily and the BR scrapbook was really sweet I really want to see the inside of that book.

  12. Oh my god. When someone posted Ted might be telling this story because the mother is dead, I kind of rolled my eyes as yet another conspiracy theory. Now I'm a little freaked out...

  13. Also I am going to post something that I am sure most will disagree with. As sad and heartbreaking as the mother(Ted's Wife) being deceased or dying is I won't totally dislike the show if they go there. I know a lot of people are already predicting it and are bitter but I can live with that ending if it is executed well. Hell who knows maybe they aren't going there anyway and these are just red herrings. As someone who has watched plenty of dramedies (comedy and drama's) it can be possible to make a touching, beautiful love story with not so happy outcomes but to be able to see all the great memories the couple makes. Just the way Ted said he wished he got those extra few days with the mother back when she didn't know him to tonight's moment talking about your kids weddings makes me think there is at least a chance she is passed on. All I ask is that they show all the beautiful, cute moments of their life together as a couple and show their love as a family. I want to see their wedding and them with their kids. Maybe some scenes of the gang together with the mother there too.

  14. Agreed about them just brushing off Ted's news about moving. Oh, what is that Ted your leaving to go to Chicago, cool we all already secretly knew anyway blah blah. You only have so many episodes left could you have least let use see Ted talk to Marshall about it for even a small moment.

  15. I agree 100%. If it's done well, I would be on board with it. Incredibly sad and bittersweet, but potentially extremely beautiful as well. I guess we'll see!

  16. My thoughts as well. It ties everything together too well to not be true in my opinion. If it's done well, I can be on board with it.

  17. Great episode.
Okay, now I am thinking the mother DOES die.The whole "when what's happening is too intense to deal with" line made me that even more.

  18. Ted's mom dying wouldn't explain the "when what's happening is too intense to deal with" line.

  19. Alright episode, which in this season, is a pretty good episode. Although the Wedding Bride storyline is by far my most hated thing about the show, unfunny and just annoying, so I did not enjoy seeing it pop up again.

I enjoyed Barney's side of tonight's episode with all his suits, then the belts, then he wanted to pack light so he only had 1 tie. Also great to see Lucy Hale again, and we finally got to see Robin's mom, wonder what she'll be like. And its always nice to hear the name Swarley.

And about the possibility of the Mother dying. I'm hoping its Ted's mom or the Mother's mom who passed before their wedding, because, while sad, won't be nearly as bad as the Mother dying. If we find out that the Mother is dead when Ted is telling the story, it'll completely ruin the show for me. The final season has hurt the show in my eyes, but the Mother being dead would just kill the show to me.

  20. We all might be over-worrying here. Ted has found 'intense' many things before that were... well, not that intense. The writers are probably making us believe The Mother is dead and -I hope- the final twist will be something funny and a bit stupid (in a good way).
Besides, if she turns out to be dead that would instantly kill the spin-off. Maybe Ted's mom wasn't at the wedding for a different reason (maybe it has something to do with her questionable husband). Let's keep our hopes up!

  21. Still don't buy the mother being dead for one second. They've built up the tensions nicely, and it's a good storytelling move to keep the idea alive, but I would still be absolutely shocked if they actually went through with killing her.

  22. This show does almost everything on purpose, Ted's mom dying would make absolutely no sense story wise. The conversation Ted and the mother were having all episode seemed to indicate something happening as opposed to past events.

  23. BTW, was there no promo at the end?

  24. There was. Just hasn't popped up online yet.

I for some reason got an impression of either Ted or the Mother having some sort of disease or condition where his/her memory deteriorates over time, so he is telling her and the kids all those stories (either to do it while he still remembers them or because she has / will forget them). The last phrase of the song at the end was also along the lines of "she thinks I've forgotten her, tell her it ain't so".., Of course that could also apply to the scenario where the Mother is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The only problem I have with mother is dead theory is that the kids are not sad one bit when they hear all those stories. They seem more annoyed because it wouldn't end.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Haven't thought about mother dying until I came in here. For me, it was clear that Virginia has died and it made Ted cringe. But after reading your posts... well, theory that mother is dead is possible, to say the least. Damn it, I don't want it. :(

  28. To everyone surprised, or in denial, here is what I posted 18 months ago:

In the words of Olivia Pope's dad: start grieving

  29. The idea of The Mother dying is so absurd to me that I didn't think about it while watching this episode, but now, after reading everything here, I'm so scared. I've said this once before, and I'll say it again. I never hated anything more in this world of tv shows than I hated reading about these death theories on HIMYM. I hope they are just adding a little suspense to the actual happy ending or something like that, because if any of them becomes a reality, that would suck and it would be awarded the worst decision any writer could've done in the history of tv shows. I'm really not exaggerating, it would be a morbid and completely stupid and horrifying thing to do. That's how much I "like" these ideas. Ted lives happily ever after with his perfect wife and his kids. He deserves that after all of this time.

I agree with you. Another aspect of this episode: the hotel valet/waiter had the same age like in the present, at the Robin's wedding...no older.

  31. I hope the writers are reading all of these comments (not that they are reading, but you know) thinking "Great, it's working. The happy ending for Ted, The Mother, the kids, Robin, Barney, Lilly, Marshall and Marvin is going to be an unexpected turn of events and perfect surprise at this point. This is just what we wanted".

That sounds an awful lot like "The Notebook" (a film that made Ted cry - hint we got in the final episode of season 8). The more I think about it the less far-fetched it seems. But maybe I'm just in denial, clinging on to that final straw, hoping the mother isn't, in fact, dead.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Plus remember, the pilot opens with:Ted: "Kids, I'm going to tell you an incredible story, the story of how I met your mother"
Boy: "Are we being punished for something?"
    Ted: "No"
Girl: "Yeah, is this going to take awhile?"
    Ted: "Yes"

Don't you think that the kids would have reacted this way if their mother died, even 6 years before? I know for sure that I'd love to hear the story if my mom died and my father was about to tell me how he met her

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think I remember an interview a while back talking about the series closing with hope... Don't you think killing the Mother is a bit off the "hope" thing?
Here's what I think : in the 2024 flashforward, The Mother has just been diagnosed with a potentially lethal illness but curable (maybe cancer?). She must have run some tests and they are waiting for the results, but they decided to leave for the week end in order to clear their thoughts. But the sentence said by The Mother hits Ted directly and he starts crying. That would also explain why he switches subject that fact when she holds his hands. Don't you think that he would be totally destroyed and inconsolable if the love of his life was already condemned to die?
So Ted crying was only to play with us on the "The Mother is dead in 2030" and she actually gets better in the end, giving Ted and us the happy ending we all deserve!
The show already dealt with a lot a tough stuff such as a parent's death and fertility, but never about the fear of death because of a long illness, so why not ? I definitely think The Mother is alive in 2030, I hope that they won't kill her and put Robin in her place like I've seen some people asking for it on other discussions, Robin/Ted is in the past, stop it already, they can't be together, not anymore. For me the scene was just a way to play with us once more before we end up the 9-year long run!

  35. I was a little miffed at the hints off the mother dying early in this episode. It's like can Ted catch an effing break for once. I really liked this episode and was glad it was framed with Ted and the mother.

    ReplyDelete
  36. We know this from the very beginning no? When Ted learnt his parents are getting divorced, he told them that his kids will know absolutely everything about how he met their mother, isn't it ?
As for her being dead, don't you think the kids are a little bit to disrespectful? And if your wife/husband died, wouldn't you tell your kids only the memories regarding her, and not your whole life guiding to that exact point summed up in 1 week end ?

  38. Yes, talking about "living in your stories" and being worried about Ted...seems just short of a sure thing...
