Game of Thrones - Creators want to end show after Season 7 or 8

Benioff and co-creator D. B. Weiss tell Windolf that the show has a lifespan, and they would like to wrap it up after seven or eight seasons. “It doesn’t just keep on going because it can,” Weiss says. “I think the desire to milk more out of it is what would eventually kill it, if we gave in to that.”

  1. I know the author is writing the sixth book, but how many are there supposed to be in total?

  2. OBAMA GETS TO SEE EPISODES OF TV SHOWS EARLY!? Damn, now I gotta become the President!

  4. 7 or 8 Seasons planned?! Will get that no doubt!

  5. 7 but there has been huge gaps between the books....

  6. Makes sense, I also think the series will take over books unless Winds of Winter comes out before next summer. I'm kind of ok with that as they have details from GRRM about where the characters go and the TV show has been forging its own storylines as well. Still wish GRRM would write faster though!

  7. Makes sense. I wouldn't want it to go on like some other shows that just doesn't know when to stop.As long as its a satisfying conclusion I'll be happy.

  8. Do not be surprised if the planned 7 books grows to 8 books....

I have no idea how they are going to do that when the next book isnt due out until 2015 at the earliest and GRRM hasnt even written the last book so it could be 2018-2020 by the time thats out. I suspect we will be getting the ending via the show instead of the books which sucks for book fan.. I get GRRM has the right to finish his book but come on.. he is taking forever, imagine being a fan who read GOT in the late 90s? The man needs to sit down and finish it.

  10. Makes sense. At least GRRM has said in interviews that he has already given the showrunners an outline of the major plot points and ending he has in mind for just such a case as the show overtaking his glacial writing pace (and we all know the show will overtake it). I like creators who don't try to milk something past it's expiration date. Set an end date and stick to it. Makes for tighter storytelling when you have an ending in sight.

  11. I had hoped for 8 seasons from the very beginning with a very outside shot at 9 seasons if GRRM was to extend the series to 8 books AND the TV series was actually going to follow the endgame of the books.

With the very likely outcome being GRRM releasing the new book next year I think that D&D will forge ahead of the series and while they may use GRRM's outlines I suspect they will create an endgame of their own different from the books.

    At least I hope!
As a fan of the book series since well before the TV series started I LOATHE the idea of the TV series spoilering the endgame of the books!!

  12. I agree 100%.

  13. 8 or 7 seasons is fine for me , as long as they give it a good ending and tie up any loose ends then i will be happy.

  14. When will the books wrap up? I like that they don't want to keep it running because it can they want an endgame

Benioff and Weiss have stated themselves that they already know the ending of the books. Worst case-scenario is that they will skip details that will be delved on the last two books. But I think it is in the best of their and Martin's interests to have a truthful story to the books in the series.

  16. Precisely. What's the point of having the show spoil the books' finale? And, well, 8 seasons seems fair enough. They'll have at least 3 seasons for books 4 and 5 and one more to finish it off (not sure if book 6 will be released by then but I sure hope so. If that's the case, they'd only have the very end of the story to figure out.)
However, if GRRM is determined to have the show end the same way the books will, they should shoot the final season and only screen it once the last book is released. It would be torture, but at least it wouldn't spoil anything. Or, I don't know, stop shooting and come back to it when the books are finished (guess that's impossible though because people involved in production have other commitments).

I think they should shoot the same schedule they shot the last seasons because not everyone that watches GoT has read the books, me included. So if they know the ending and the author is okay with it they should not just stop airing seasons to not spoil anything for the readers. No one is forced to watch the show just like no one is forced to read the books.

  18. 8 books. #6: The Winds of Winter (the one he's currently writing)
#7: A Dream of Spring and #8 which is untitled for now.

  19. Definitely thinking the show will have to come up with it's own "final chapter" but I definitely hope they have an ending in sight and write towards that. Although if they have 8 seasons that means after this we're already halfway done with the show. :/

  20. Jeez, that is a long-ass wait.

  21. Yup, and I just can't get A Dance With Dragons finished for some reaso.

  22. I feel the same way... I can see it going longer easily, but...
If the showrunners desire a shorter series I can see how they could make it shorter too.
Streamlining the story by cutting out sub-plots even more than they have already.

Remove much of the Iron Islands if not all, remove most if not all of the Dorne plot, and maybe even skip young Griff?

Without knowing the endgame of the books (yes I have theories, but no concrete facts as to what will occur) we just do not know what parts of Books IV and V are integral to the endgame of the series. For that matter, even if they are integral to the book series, events could be tweaked or rearranged or removed...

I have hopes that the books will come out in time to not get passed by the series, but each month the hopes get slimmer and slimmer!

  23. From InsideTV:

:“I would say it’s the goal we’ve had from the beginning,” Benioff says. “It was our unstated goal, because to start on a show and say your goal is seven seasons is the height of lunacy. Once we got to the point where we felt like we’re going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us.”

Seven sounds okay to HBO, as well. Or perhaps eight. “I’m expecting to be sitting down with Dan and David to talk season 5 and we’ll talk about how things are looking,” says HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “We’re all very mindful that they’re having conversations all the time with [author George R.R. Martin]. I think they do feel bullish enough that there’s enough story to deliver through season 7. I hate to sound greedy, but our longest shows have gone 7 or 8 seasons, so seven is a nice long run for us.”"

HBO should should make Season longer 10 Episode to 20 Episodes
So 15 Episode Season be for A Feast for Crows.
So 20 Episode Season be for A Dance with Dragons.
So 20 Episode Season be for The Winds of Winter.
So 20 Episode Season be for A Dream of Spring.
