I'm unsure if I want Supernatural to end next year. But if they do decide to finish it, I hope it is announced before the season starts.

ReplyDeleteOf course not, I want at least 11 seasons. I guess that depends on many factors, "Tribes" will also factor in, and from what I read about "Tribes" so far, I just won't work as well as Pedowitz thinks.
ReplyDeleteSo he should do all in his power to keep the only remaining WB show on air, obviously back then they knew how to cast the right actors for the main cast and also hired good writers.
I went with no as long as it has good ratings. If enough people enjoy it, why have it canceled?
ReplyDeleteI am so used to SN i can't imagine my tv life without it, last time i was so dependent on a show i was a kid watching Sliders and Quantum leap. When SN is over it will be like someone pulled a rug from under my feet.

ReplyDeleteI thought I was going to hate this season and have actually enjoyed it. (Though I do wish they'd let the Angel/Heaven arc elements go about 2 seasons ago and done something different.) As long as I'm enjoying the show I'm perfectly happy with it staying on. Apparently, others agree. IIRC didn't they get this pick up partly because of growth in their ratings?

ReplyDeleteUnsure. I will always watch SPN - but I am not sure how they are trying to evolve the brother element of the show. I would rather them end it, then destroy it. That being said - I absolutely adore Jensen and Jared and will watch them onscreen for many seasons to come.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be, and i'm not against this idea. But since the last episodes were dealing with old defaults of the show in a good way, I think the serie might be able to continue on good bases if it end up going on an 11th season.

ReplyDeleteUnsure. I love the show and i will watch as long as its on air, but i have a feeling that season 11 will be last. I guess the plans is to make supernatural the longest show on CW. If its a good idea or not i have no idea, let's see how season 9 ends and what the plan for season 10.
ReplyDeleteNah. They've already come this far. They need to break the record for longest running North American scif fi/fantasy show. Go for the gold. 11 seasons and well over 200 episodes. Heck why not shoot for 250 episodes in season 12.
ReplyDeleteI can watch this show forever, honestly. Its my true love for 9 years, despite ups and downs: for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. I am in my 40th and don't remember being so invested in TV characters since I was a child.

So my ideal world: SPN go 13 episodes after season 10, and Js have time to enjoy their family and do movies while they still young and marketable. Love them both, love SPN , never going to have enough of it .

It's to be admired for having gone on so long, when other shows have fallen by the wayside and that is due to Sam and Deans' chemistry which is being senselessly attacked by the current writers.

The show is practically number one on the CW, so if the J's are still willing to continue and the ratings hold, it could go on for as long as it wants.

The writing may be bad but that doesn't mean there can't be a 'divine' intervention which could bring back some good writers who know what the show is all about; namely the Winchester Brothers.:)

ReplyDeleteThe 5th season definitely should've been the last. Seasons 1-5 were extremely solid and succinct, while each season since has been disjointed and nowhere near as good.
ReplyDeleteSo long as the cast come back - which I doubt they'd do without a decent story arc - I'll keep watching.
ReplyDeleteI guess everyone's answer depends on whether they think the show is still producing quality scripts/storylines. If you think the show is till going strong, then you will likely want it to continue. If you think the show is a shadow of its former self, you may want it to end.

ReplyDeleteI can't see it ending for any reason but Jensen or Jared wanting to leave, so I think it's ultimately up to them. If they're cognizant of the writers needing to know long enough in advance to write towards a wholly satisfying ending, which I can only imagine they are, they'll approach TPTB, say they want out and make sure the final season is announced as such before it premieres. They must be extremely grateful to the large and loyal fanbase that's allowed the show to become such a hit, and will want to grant them the best possible ending.

ReplyDeleteI don't want season 10 to be last season of Supernatural. I have really enjoyed this season! I really like the storyline. I think that as long as Jensen or Jared want to work on the show, then it should continue. I think its one of the best shows on tv, and I would love to watch it for at least 2 or so more seasons before it ends.

ReplyDeleteFor me 6 & 7 were OK, but 8 I want to forget ever happened. Nine is much better, but then after 8 if it got any worse I would not still be watching. Carver has been a huge disappointment to me and I had such high hopes when he came back, after all he did write some of my favorite eps..

What do you think of the SPN spin-off now that a couple of actors have been cast? If I remember you were veering to positive about it.
Agreed 100%. While what you've heard about about 7 being better than 6, 8 better than 7, and 9 better than 8 is true, none are even close to the glory days of 3, 4, and 5. I've watched every episode of every season, but it just hasn't been the same since 5, which was my favorite season. I'd rank them something like this:

Season 2: B, improved with characters like Jo
Season 3: A-, finally serialized with Lilith, original Ruby, and Bela
Season 4: A, would have been an A+ with original Ruby, Cas is fantastic
Season 5: A+, Lucifer and Death and more Cas
Season 6: C-, how the mighty have fallen
Season 7: C+, more focused with the Leviathan but still a mess
Season 8: B, improved, refocused, more Cas
Season 9 so far: B+, more focused, more Cas, Crowley vs Abaddon
I think if they pack in the entire endgame into season 10, it will go out with a bang. The show shouldn't be dragged on much longer.
Season 5 was actually my favorite and things went down hill from there.
ReplyDeleteInteresting - while we're in agreement that the show pretty much went to hell (no pun intended - especially since, in this universe, everyone keeps coming back from hell :D) after S5, our opinions are quite different when it comes to rating the first 5 seasons. I'd say S2 and S4 were the best (the former was more fun and less angsty, but the latter was more epic and exciting), then S3, then S1, and S5 is actually my least favorite. I had such high expectations for the Lucifer arc, and apart from Mark Pellegrino pretty much rocking the role, I was really let down.

ReplyDeleteI'm unsure. I definitely don't want it to end as long as there are good stories to be told and it doesn't repeat itself. But if all the ideas are used up (ie: they do a musical ep), it's better to end it before then.

ReplyDeleteWith any other show I would've said yes, even my other fave ones. But supernatural is the only show show that I want it to last so much longer so no will always be my answer. I think the show will come to end of season 12 (I hope more!). But its ththe most awesome show around and I can't wait for the break to be over and then enjoy the rest of this season and more :)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to stop after season 7 but I can't god I still love those 2 guys and Misha can not for get him but after bobby died I was thinking the show would Die too but it still has life in it even when season 8 sucks it keeps going just like the 2 guys the show will never die even if it did end in season 10 we can get a movie of comic books I be fine with that.

we had more fights between each other than actual "coming together" and most often we pissed off other fandoms.
but at the same time this fandom has a ton of passion for this show [whether that be positive or negative well i won't say but i think you all know by now]
and i would really love for the show to go out with a bang.
i would love for it to leave a type of....mark if you wish.
that's just me though. i don't speak for anyone else, but yeah god i would love for the 11th season to be the final one. so yeah one more season and 10th not be it.
the writers could do so much more with the road they're heading down via character development and storyline/plot-line and myth-arcs.

I want the show to continue as long as 1. Jared and Jensen want to keep going, 2. the ratings and story lines are good (as well as the writing.) I can't imagine SPN not being on air, but when the time comes that it has to end, I want TPTB to tell us ahead of time, and not to leave the show at a cliffhanger. I DON'T want the brothers to die in a blaze of glory. I want them to end the show as they began...riding down the highway in Baby, side by side, saving people and hunting things...leaving us with the knowledge that we will see them later on in movie theaters. Other TV shows have moved to the theaters...why not SPN?

ReplyDeleteI have a feeling 10 may be the last no matter what, but if they still want to carry on and the numbers are there and the show is good, then I say go on. I think there's still plenty of story to tell, especially if the show works out how to write for Sam and Dean as brothers, and manages to bring more characters in and doesn't have them vanish all the time like Abaddon has this season.
This show has such potential and some good writers (some) and some of the best actors on TV. I want to see what they can do. And the show isn't like anything else out there.
Supernatural should stay for at least 11 seasons. But then again, how many more story arcs can the show have before the writers (supposedly!) run out of ideas?
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to rate most of the seasons because there always seem to be a few outstanding episodes and sometimes I will absolutely love an episode the first time through, but not want to ever watch it again afterward. But, if I ca generalize...
ReplyDeleteSeason 1: A, This season set the tone and the relationship that made me fall in love. I was not really a horror fan; I usually had to cover my eyes for the initial death scenes. But the brother's relationship was so believable and compelling... I was hooked.
Season 2: A, I loved nearly every bit of this season even though I didn't like Dean's attitude after John's death... After the talks about Dean knowing about the deal and what John told him about Sam, my love for the show turned into an obsession.
Season 3: A+, Except for a couple of exceptions, this is easily my favorite season as a whole. Magnificent 7 was a totally vanilla season opener and it remained my least favorite until season 6, but most of the other episodes were great. Mystery Spot is still my favorite episode...
Season 4: C, This season was totally hit and miss for me. The first time through I loved Lazarus Rising, it was a very satisfying episode after the long Hellatus and it managed to get Dean out of Hell in a very interesting way. Castiel's entrance was just about the best for any character I have ever seen to an established show.

ReplyDeleteAfter Lazarus, things just seemed to lose the feelings that I was getting from the other seasons. It seemed to become the Dean and Angels story and ceased being about the brothers. There are some very good episodes that season, but on a whole, it was my least favorite until season 8.
Season 5: B, Again, the brothers' relationship was wounded and the season was almost too depressing to watch. I re-watch very few episodes from this season, but I think it was well constructed.
Season 6: B+, After an atrocious season opener, it became a very good season for me. There was too much going on, but at least the brothers were eventually back on track and there were some great episodes.
Season 7: B-, The first two episodes were just incredible, then it plummeted for a while, but overall, the season was enjoyable all the way through.
Season 8: C-, This season almost made me stop watching altogether. Luckily it picked up in the second half...
Season 9: ?, I can't really comment yet on the season. All of my other ratings are based on my impressions of the season as a whole. However, we are past the half way point and I have only re-watched parts of maybe 3 episodes... Before season 8, I nearly always re-watched an episode one or two times that first night... Carver has crushed my love for the Winchesters, but not enough (yet) for me to give up on the characters that I used to obsess over. I keep hoping to find that fascination again. Luckily I still love all of the actors...
I'm with you, I want them still hunting, so I can think if I need them they will be here. Hey you have to suspend belief to love the show, so why not. lol Sam and Dean are like members of my family and I am very protective of the characters and hate when writers mess with them. ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you feel that way, but for me, ever since Season 5 ended, there's only been 1-2 episodes each season that I've liked. Most range from awful to watchable.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are so many reasons to end the show, from the show running out of steam to having it end on the same season that Smallville (which I considered to be Supernatural's brother-in-arms) ended.

I felt like Lucifer never should have been shown oncamera. All he did was whine about what a hard life he had. Azazel was a much better foe.
ReplyDeleteYou are the first person to have very similar grades for the seasons as I did. I too felt season 6 was better than 5. I did like season 7 better than 5 overall as well and I quit watching after the abomination that was season 8. That season gets a D- for me. I have never been more disappointed in a showrunner in my life than with Carver.

ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to it but any joy I have will be killed off if they have a human-superntural Romeo and Juliet plot or love triangle. I have purposely kept the spoilers to a minimum so I can keep an open mind. It will get 3 episodes from me at a minimum and the back door pilot will probably be the only Supernatural episode I watch this year.
ReplyDeleteFair point. But I still think some things are bad enough in concept (in one's opinion) that there's no way they'll work in execution. I for one think the brotherly angst in SPN should've been done away with years ago. They are two men in their 30's. At some point, they were going to have to reach an understanding about their relationship and place in each other's lives and form a much healthier dynamic. But since this over the top angst appears to be the writers' bread and butter, they won't ever let it go. You know that side frame of STV where you see new comments? Every time I see an SPN-related comment that goes like "I think Dean has every right to be hurt by Sam, he has sacrificed so much for his brother and Sam doesn't appreciate that..." etc., I facepalm. I know this is just my opinion, and obviously there are many many many people who don't share it given the show's popularity... but it's just hard for me to understand how viewers can enjoy a story that is perpetually going around in circles with no development, or growth on the part of the characters.
ReplyDeleteI guess for me, there have been developments, just not so much in the Dean and Sam relationship. There are other parts of the show I enjoy and care about. I care about Dean and Sam too, and the writing for them disappoints me (although this season is finally saying the fixation on keeping each other alive at all costs is a bad thing, after years of this being presented with kisses and candy flowers), but I care about Cas, and a few of the supporting characters (the ones still around), and I feel like Dean's individual story arc has been fascinating in the last two seasons.
ReplyDeleteThe show is uneven and messy and often has lost potential, but I've felt that way for such a long time now. The only time it was almost too much for me was season 6, just because I thought this was their chance to start fresh, and instead they had Mitch Pileggi scowling as Dean committed suicide yet again to save Sam yet again.
I was the way you are with SPN when I quit Angel - I would read about the show's last 3 seasons and thought it sounded like crap. I don't know if I was right or not. I will probably watch someday to see. So I do understand what you mean.
Whiny villains are dreadful, agreed. I think one of the worst parts of S5 was their extended parallel between the Winchester family and the heavenly "family" of God, Michael, Lucifer and the rest. It was a fail on every count: it served as a crutch for more overblown brotherly angst, something I well and truly loathed by that point, and it made the supposedly fearsome angels look like a bunch of bratty kids who were fighting over Daddy's attention. Would've liked it so much better if they did two things: refrained from the endless references to God and the angels as family (the angels calling each other brothers and sisters could easily just be a comrades-in-arms thing). and tweaked Lucifer's motivation a bit so it wasn't so much being upset that Daddy and big bro were mean to him, but simply thinking they were all pathetic and human-like and wanting to crush them. Sometimes a "tragic backstory" can work for a villain, as cliche as it is, but for an all-powerful archangel it's terribly pathetic; Lucifer should've been evil and loving it all the way.
ReplyDeleteNever actually showing Lucifer could've been cool, if challenging for the writers. They should've probably at least waited until later in the season instead of showing him (or at least his vessel) to us as early as the premiere. There's nothing quite as scary as the unknown, so if we could initially see the destruction Lucifer was leaving in his wake but not him, it would've nicely built him up as a terrifying figure.
Well, as I said I was referring to the general schema of things. Since I aren't actually watching anymore, I'm bound to get some details wrong. You have to admit that the endings of Seasons 3, 5 and 7 are quite similar.
ReplyDeleteI agree that waiting for the last few episodes would have been a good idea. I think they should have had Mark Pellegrino as Nick for a little longer, and showed how he was pushed into accepting his fate. Maybe even had him meet up with Sam and Dean and they got to like him, so that his agreeing to be Lucifer would be more of a betrayal and make you wonder if the same would happen to Sam.
ReplyDeleteI was so disappointed with how they handled Michael. At least Lucifer had some cool scenes. Michael was just a brat, other than one bit in the time travel episode.

ReplyDeleteThere are some similarities, but this time they had Dean as alive (to the audience) immediately and we got to see him in this place, instead of being referred to offcamera, like Hell was.
The Purgatory scenes were my favorite part of season 8. They just looked cool and had a great drive to them. I hope if you ever see them you might post about them.

ReplyDeleteI've quite enjoyed discussing all of this with you, I know that when someone is very negative about a show I like, it can be hard to remain civil and just talk to the point instead of getting angry. So thanks for taking it in stride and providing me with some interesting food for thought.
Interesting idea about seeing more of Nick, because that scene where Bellamy Young plays Lucifer as Nick's dead wife was fantastic, so eerie and powerful. One possible way to get around the problem of the obviously huge power imbalance (three human hunters and a rogue angel vs. the devil himself) could've been to use Lucifer more in the manipulative, seductive vein and less as a physical threat. The way he psychologically broke down Nick to get him to say yes was some dark stuff.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I thought the scene between Castiel and Lucifer in 5x10 was awesome and wanted to see them face off again. So much wasted potential in S5.
That's a great scene (in 5x10). It makes the whole "assbutt" thing at the end of the season more annoying for me...it was just silly and weird.

After A Very Supernatural Christmas, I had very high hopes for Carver and they were quickly dashed.
ReplyDeleteIf I looked at individual episodes, I like more from Season 7 than I do from Season 5... Season 5 was just depressing, but I enjoyed most of the story from season 5. Season 7 lost points by teasing Bobby's loss when the junk yard got burned, then really killing him... I still haven't gotten over that. The only reason I put season 5 a bit above season 7 is there was just too much going on in 7. They killed off Eve so easily and then Castiel was suddenly "the big bad". It just kind of left my head spinning. But, I found all of it interesting. Season 5 was just depressing all the way through until the end of Point of No Return. One wink from Dean and it was like a huge weight lifted off my chest...
Season 8 was just an absolute fail for the first half. I didn't hate Hunter Heroici, but I was in such a funk at that time, I couldn't enjoy it. That is the only episode I re-watched even once from the first half of the season. Everyone loves Hitler raised my hopes a little for the season. I truly enjoyed nearly every minute of that episode and it had been quite a while since that happened... I think that was the point that I just let my beliefs about Supernatural go and decided to watch a new series that had a lot of my favorite actors in it. So, I enjoyed the second half much more... But, I had to let go of my definition of Supernatural to do it.
It kind of made me sad to read all of the comments from people that hated 6 and 7 and thought season 8 was a breath of fresh air... At least I recognized my show in seasons 6 and 7... After 8x01, I kind of had to back away from the fandom to survive.
I appreciate that. I didn't want to make you feel bad for not watching, so I'm glad it didn't come across that way. This has been a nice discussion. I sometimes feel like disqus' design encourages flame wars so I was afraid I'd inadvertently cause one.

ReplyDeleteThe utter despair from mid-season 4 through 5 are what do those seasons in for me too. The story arc worked but the pieces were simply depressing. I agree the Dean wink was refreshing but it was still the darkest season of them all.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually season 6 where we have Eve and then the Cas and Crowley partnership. I agree that is too crowded, which is why I prefer 7 to 6. I thinkt hey should have made Eve the Big Bad of the story and left Cas for another season. Actually I think they should have ended the angels in season 5 when the big Lucifer story was over.
I agree completely about season 8. I didn't understand how long time fans that were so upset about seasons 6 and 7 could even stomach season 8, unless they were focused on Cas who did get more screen time in 8. All the canon-breaking was far too much for me. Add to it the brothers fight for no reason and Sam not looking and my love affair with Supernatural was over, at least Jeremy Carver's view of it. Like you say, it was unrecognizable and that's not my SPN. I was said to hear that it still isn't back on its feet in season 9.
There were a few in the second half of the season that I did like, but nothing could wipe out the bad taste I had over Sam not looking for Dean, so from ep one, that season was ruined and I kept hoping they would fix it before the end, but of course that would have been to easy...YES I DID LOOK.
ReplyDeleteMan, I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I hated Lucifer. Was surprised so many people were worshipping him. But I generally don't care much for Pellegrino. He does the same thing with every character he plays.

ReplyDeleteI will always maintain my opinion that the show should have ended -- how Kripke originally intended -- with Season 5. Since it kept going, the show has been declining for me and it's barely a facade of the show I have loved since the pilot in 2005 when I became a fan. I would much rather say goodbye to a show I adore with a solid ending and a good fanbase than to have it drag on for years until it's cancelled.

ReplyDeleteFor me season 9 has been much better than season 8. I don't love any episodes yet, but I don't believe I loathe any yet either. It's tough to remember all of the episodes because I don't re-watch them like I used to. Until season 8, the only episode that I loathed was Family Remains... But everything about the first half of season 8 is a blank to me because I erased it from my mind. I am willing to keep Purgatory, but everything else had to go for me to continue watching.
I agree, but you never know what will happen with ratings, or how other new shows will perform, so that may play in.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy Changing Channels. Most of the others were either too much angst for me or just felt half-finished, although some had their moments. I'm glad you enjoyed the season.
ReplyDeleteI agree on everything except that I think season 6 wasn't that bad. Sure episodes like 6x14 Mannequin should be salted and burned and never spoken of again... but The Man Who Would Be King is one of my favorite episodes ever and IMHO was wonderfully written and acted. Watching Castiel's perspective was interesting and Misha Collins brought his A-game. I also liked Caged Heat, My Heart Will Go On and Mommy Dearest.
ReplyDeleteI think it should end after S10. I want to see Jensen, Jared, Misha and others in different shows, and it's been stated that Carver has a 3 year plan, which started with S8. If Carver has a plan, (and I honestly trust that he does) I don't want them to drag it out for the sake of ratings and money...

willing and able and as long as the story lines are good (which I think
they still are going strong), I'd love to see it go beyond S10.
No idea how this team plans to end the ultimately, but I agree...I'd like to see them still helping people and hunting things...assuming they are still sane by then. LOL!
I have started to watch the whole series from the beginning again. I really, really miss the ghost stories, the shape shifters and the like. If they can't get back to that then maybe it should finish? I don't know what anyone else thinks... Don't get me wrong I love the show and I think it has been better now that they haven't got Crowley chained to a table

ReplyDeleteI am too! I get upset when people who profess to love the show bad-mouth the characters, or get nasty when they play favorites. If they can get that nasty, they aren't fans, They're just trolls. I love the brothers, and like you, I want to know that they are out there somewhere, ready and willing and able to protect me when/if I need them.

ReplyDeleteIt's weird for me. I understand people's gripes and complaints with the fifth seasons, yet I still find it (mostly) enjoyable. Sure there were some episodes that were a bit pointless as most standalones in a myth-heavy season are, and a bit more focus could... should have been placed on the apocalypse. But overall I enjoyed it. Maybe it was Mark Pellegrino or the season had some of my favorite episodes or maybe it was because it was the first season I watched live.
ReplyDeleteOf course, each season has had its own flaws, and some are a bit more grievous than others. But overall, I would take Seasons 1-5 over anything after.
I actually didn't even like the fifth, which is what led me to quit afterwards. I expected so much more out of the climactic season of Kripke's 5-year-plan with the brothers facing off against Lucifer. Oddly enough, the previous season which was about *releasing* Lucifer from his cage was much more exciting (if not devoid of its own flaws). Once we actually had Lucifer around, things seemed to get quite boring, although I loved Mark Pellegrino's highly endearing turn in the role.
