Does anyone actually care? I don't and I prefer her dead. Perhaps Hannibal took lots of blood from her and poured on the kitchen floor but she is such a bland boring character i would prefer if the agent who managed to trace Hannibal was alive, but she is definitely dead sine Hannibal sends her body part to Fuller.
I care, because if anyone has ever read the novels then it's easy to see WHO she back shadows and ultimately foreshadows. She marks the possibility to: manipulate Will into having a family and because she is then apart of what makes Hannibal realize that maybe he can have something he lost back in some way.
Sorry guys. I didn't find anywhere where Fuller confirmed this. I went looking before I submitted the poll, but clearly, you guys say so. I also don't know why the last option is there (please ignore it)
"but she is definitely dead since Hannibal sends her body part to Fuller."- first time I heard a character sending body parts to the creator of the show, what did Fuller ever do to him? ;)
Personally I liked Abigail, liked her relationship with Hannibal and wish they would explore her dynamic with Will more- it was very one sided and mostly in his head. I did like Miriam Lass though, wish we could have seen more of her, but she's definitely dead and ice (and parts of her are beer).
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/21/hannibal-bryan-fuller-on-season-1s-big-finale-and-whats-next-in-season-2?page=2 " Fuller: Well, that’s definitely the message, is that Hannibal was feeding Bedelia -- because it’s tete de veau, which is head of veal. And he talks about veal in the conversation, and that’s all very much -- not so veiled for the audience, but a veiled conversation about who exactly they’re eating."
Thanks for pointing out my typo, i was thinking about fuller when i typed it. I used to like Abigail until we found out she helped her dad to lure girls. Since that moment i had been waiting for her to get her comeuppance. And i didn't really notice Hannibal being extra warm or loving with her. He was just using her connection to Will to analyze thme both.
I dunno, I don't think her helping her dad lure the girls (because she knew if she didn't, he would kill her) makes her less sympathetic or tragic- it's obviously been eating away at her and it was clearly a "them or me" situation. Yes, she had other options, like calling the cops, but she loves her dad and he's been loving towards her (up until the moment he wasn't) so it's not an easy thing to do.
Hannibal was definitely loving towards her, in his own way. I'm only on episode 8 in my re-rewatch, but the whole "drug induced happy associations" from episode 4 was for her benefit and from his discussions with Bedelia he clearly saw her as a surrogate daughter/younger sister (Mischa replacement?). He definitely wasn't just using her to get to Will, he was truly pained and remorseful when Will "forced his hand" and he had to kill Abigail. Hannibal was "playing" with both Will and Abigail, because he saw potential in them and was curious about them and what they'd do, if he pushed them a certain direction.
No he didn't, actually. You can read the article on IGN, for those that care. He was incredibly evasive. He laughed at the first question directly regarding it, and then he states, "...That's definitely the message..", which insinuates That's what it's suppose to appear like, but not necessarily what it is. So, there's no actual confirmation that she's dead - only that it appears to be that way, at present.
I undestand that she was afraid he would kill her but it is not an excuse in that situation. She had plenty of oppotunities to go to cops, and he was not loving to her at all, that scene on the train i remember vaguely but when she hesitated he made it clear: It's either you or her. So clearly there is no love between these two. And all her actions didn't bring anything good, just like any normal person would be able to see, he killed her mom and nearly killed her. So basically these girls died for nothing because her idiocy didn't even save herself or her mother. What was she thinking? that if she goes on long enough helping him kill girls eventually he will grow tired of it and magically becomes normal? She wasn't thinking, and that i find most unforgivable. She wasn't 5 year old girl, she was teenager. As for Hannibal i completely agree with you last sentence, he saw potential in them and he was seeing what they would do, i thinks he grew to like Will and since Will cared about Abigail Hannibal was holding back and not killing her until he could no longer afford to let her live. There is absolutely no love in him for Abigail all the nice things he did were for Will'sbenefit.
Like I said, she clearly had other actions she could have taken and it wouldn't hold up in court as 'self defense', I'm not excusing her actions, I'm just suggesting you try and see where she's coming from. She's obviously very close to her father (them hunting together in the dream in 1X3) and she's young, she's 18, she wasn't thinking about the situation rationally. It's easy to say "she should have gone to the cops" or "what was she thinking?", just like it's easy to wonder why victims of abuse don't leave their spouse- she loves her father, she doesn't want him in jail or hurt and yes, she probably thinks that as long as she helps him, he won't hurt her. Plus there was a lot of denial and repression going on- she was genuinely surprised when she found the hair in the pillow, on some level she was probably lying to herself, convincing herself that it wasn't really happening, that her father wasn't killing those girls.
I think you're wrong about Hannibal not having love for Abigail- yes he ended up choosing Will over her, but that was also after she "betrayed him" by digging up Nicholas Boyle's body and putting them both at risk. The minute he knew Jack and Co were on to her, he knew he had to sacrifice her (not just for "Will's sake" but also so that she doesn't talk). Just because Hannibal has genuine feelings towards someone, doesn't mean he won't kill them if they get in his way or threaten his freedom. Hannibal was moved to tears over having had to kill Abigail- it wasn't an act, he regretted it and told Bedelia he saw Abigail as a daughter, all that was real to Hannibal.
Bryan Fuller never outright said that Abigail is dead. He simply calls her "a controversial dish" and won't say anything further.
He has said, however, that Abigail reminds Hannibal of his long-dead sister Mischa, who is mentioned in the novels Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. Fuller also said that originally Abigail was supposed to lose a finger instead of an ear, much like when Hannibal cuts off a finger when he becomes a fugitive in Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal. At one point in Hannibal he tries to bring Mischa back through Clarice. There's also the phrase Hannibal used, "in this life." He couldn't protect his sister in this life, he'll be damned if he lets the closest thing to her slip through his grasp.
I wouldn't put it past them that Abigail's hidden away somewhere in Hannibal's house with a missing ear being called Mischa.
I think there should've been a "most likely dead but I'm still in denial" option. I would've voted for it, I found her character really interesting (the actress was amazing, by the way!). Honestly, one of my favourite things about season 1 was Abigail's relationship with Hannibal.
In the last episode of Hannibal ( S2E4,Takiawase), when Beverly Katz arrives at the bottom of the stairs and at the end of the room she is engulfed by what she sees. She either was astonished by her new discovery that Hannibal is in fact the genius murderer Will knew him to be or Abigail being held hostage (with a missing ear) in Hannibal's dungeon. Now I could be incredibly wrong, maybe she was looking at a mirror and even noticed that someone was behind her. But I would bet money that at the moment of enlightenment and seeing Abigail still alive, Abigail pointed Hannibal behind Beverly, hence Beverly turning around and ready to confront the monster that Hannibal Lecter really is. Just a wild guess!
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Yes, she is. Even Bryan Fuller confirmed it.
ReplyDeleteYes though if she wasn't it would be one way for Hannibal to get his comeuppance.
