The Walking Dead – Episode 4.11 – ‘Claimed’ Review and Biggest Bonehead of the Week Poll

25 Feb 2014

If a good old apocalypse has some redeeming value, it should be that it thins the herd by getting rid of the people who are too dumb to live. We learned this week that that’s not at all true. Darwinism, or the survival of the fittest, was proven to be utterly false, as it appeared that only those that make really dumb decisions survive. Everyone – with the exceptions of Rick, Michonne, Carl, and Rosita – did something at some point that was incredibly stupid.

For the second time since starting to review this series, I found myself asking, “Why is this person still alive?” The first time was when we got to know Tyreese's friend Allen in the second half of season 3. This time the stupidity seemed to be everywhere, and almost everyone was in on it. My head was spinning. To quote Hershel, “They just keep coming. It’s like a plague. They’re everywhere!”

But I was laughing too – and humor is such a rare treat on this show. I enjoyed this episode, and I’m loving the new characters. Abraham had me at, “The fate on the entire damn human race might depend on it.” What does humor in a post-zombie-apocalyptic world look like?  Apparently like people who act like morons. So what can you do? You can laugh. You can cry. You can try to find the humor in the situation as the characters did.  Abraham smiled as he killed zombies. Michonne tried to turn cheese and walkers into kid humor. Even Carl played along with this week's humor theme and made a joke, “I’m laughing on the inside.”

Going along with the tone of this week, I’ve included a poll further down this article for Biggest Bonehead of the Week.  Let me know why you voted the way you did in the comments.

But first a mini-review of the other parts of the episode, which were more serious and really quite good. Michonne’s scary-swift transition into step mom serving breakfast was sweet. Rick’s escape from under the bed was scary. Michonne’s discovery of the dead family was sad. The man on the porch spitting on Rick was gross.

Now to the nominees in this week’s poll:

Tara – She was borderline for being included here because her actions were somewhat justifiable. But for voluntarily jumping into the back of a truck of a bunch of military types that she just met, and agreeing to go with them to a far away part of the country during a zombie apocalypse, she needs to be included. If common sense about safety wasn't enough to stop her, what was she thinking Glenn would say when he woke up? The whole reason she was with him was to make amends by helping him to find Maggie, and she had no reason to believe Maggie was in DC. In her defense, her reasoning that they were stranded without weapons and Glenn was unconscious had merit. And she almost redeemed herself by questioning Abraham’s motivations near the end of the episode. She lost points when she seemed to believe Eugene’s story without questioning it, though.

Glenn – We expect better from you. In season one, you were the go-to guy for running for supplies because you were smart about getting in and getting out without attracting zombie attention. When Rick was trapped in a tank in Atlanta, you correctly called him a “dumbass.” In season 2, when you froze during a gun fight because Maggie told you she loved you, it was cute. Turning and hitting a huge military guy, who was annoying but not threatening, because you were worried about getting back to your wife – well – you can do better. Who did you think would come to your aid if he knocked you out again? Those zombies salivating at the side of the road (who were all smartly dressed to blend with the corn, by the way)? I’m giving you a pass, although others might not, on the second bonehead move, which was demanding to get out the truck at what must have been about 100 miles away from your destination and not even asking to borrow a weapon. You missed Maggie and you had no other options. I get it. But also, like Tara, you seemed to buy Eugene’s story, so you lost points there.

Eugene – Now this is a tricky one because I can’t get a handle on his motivations yet. On the surface, his biggest bonehead move appears to be shooting off his gun near the truck and puncturing the gas tank. However, with his smirk, I’m not convinced that he didn't do it intentionally. We’ll have to wait and see on that one. I'm also not convinced it was an irrational move because zombies were closing in.  Where he loses points though is coming up with such a lame story as having information that is vital to Washington. The fact that others are buying it doesn’t excuse the fact that it sounds ridiculous said out loud. He also loses points for thinking he’s the smartest person there when that's obviously Rosita.

Abraham – When Rick told Hershel he was talking to Lori on the phone, Hershel had enough sense to raise an eyebrow to it, even if he didn’t directly confront Rick on it. I can’t figure out what this Abraham is thinking in making it his mission to travel to Washington on zombie-infested roads because Eugene tells him that he's getting calls from Washington because he’s a scientist and his knowledge is needed to end the zombie apocalypse. My thoughts went from, they’re ALL insane, to Eugene’s pulling some scam and has no intention of going to Washington, to there really is someone on the other end of the line but it’s someone who’s gone just as nuts, or my favorite – Eugene is completely lying but wants to go to Washington for some random reason like he left behind his autographed Redskins jersey.

Man who took a nap without clearing the room first – We didn’t get a glimpse of his face until he was floor level with Rick, being choked by his companion over a bed, but what do you say about someone who goes into a strange room during a zombie apocalypse and falls asleep on the bed without checking the hiding places first – such as under the bed – for things that might slip out and bite you in your sleep? You also barricade the door in case something decides to visit.

Man who choked his friend over a bed – When I first watched this, I had thought the man had killed his companion and was sleeping with a newly dead body just feet away. Apparently I was wrong, as The Talking Dead confirmed that the other man was still breathing. But still, the man who won the bed didn’t bend down to check to see if his traveling companion was still breathing before falling asleep. And seriously dude – you choke someone you may need to count on later to survive over a bed? You’re on a street lined with homes full of them. Food I get. Water I get. But we've seen no evidence of a post-apocalypse shortage of beds.

Man on the toilet – I could make a comment about how he forgot to pull up the toilet seat, or that there was no working plumbing – but I think the man was just retreating to his safe place. No harm in that really. I have to wonder, though, what was going through his mind when Rick walked into the room and he didn’t immediately react. He had several seconds to get a surprise jump on Rick, but he just sat there. Maybe he was lost in deep thought.

So vote away.

  3. I'd say it's The Man who took a nap without clearing the room first... Living in that kind of world, who doesn't check under the bed !?!

I really liked Abraham and his companions :-) It would be interesting if the group headed to Washington.

  5. Unless it was sabotage then he might be brilliant!

  6. No man with a mullet have or ever will hold the secret to human kind's survival. The obvious choice is Abraham.

  7. That's what I voted too. Attitude should definitely be a factor here.

Can't really fault Tara or Glenn. Tara because its a zombie apocalypse so yea its good to travel with someone from connected or remotely close to the army weapons and the rolling building (truck) Glenn because when he was by himself yes he was elusive smart and quick. Now he's married in love and full of emotions so if he acted any other way than how he did would have been bonehead move. My vote is the guys in rick house, Abraham and Eugene

  10. I'm actually with you on Glenn jumping off the truck. It was hitting Abraham that made me go, hmm. That was sure to get a response, and he wasn't in a good place to get knocked unconscious again. That wouldn't have helped him get back to Maggie!

  11. Interesting theory. One of the complaints about this week's episode has been how lax the intruders appeared by comparison even to the careful clearing we saw when Rick and Carl painstaking went through each room in the very same house. I'm not saying that this couldn't simply be bad/lazy writing, but it could also indicate that some people have/can survive in this world without being particularly capable. I've seen real life examples of this and the old saying safety in numbers immediately comes to mind. Perhaps it isn't by accident that the events with Rick, Carl and Michonne's group took place in the same episode as Tara, Abraham, Glenn, Eugene and Rosita, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Personally, I'm inclined to question everything about Abraham's story. It seems incredibly dangerous and irresponsible to transport the key to humanity's survival with two bodyguards and Abraham's "plan" to gather up capable fighters, not to mention complete fucking strangers, on his very important road trip to DC rings hollow. Whether he's being led by a clever Eugene and a soldier's sense of duty will be intriguing to figure out. It worries me though. I want Glenn to be safe.

  12. I think as people have lost their humanity and their hope, the line between them and the walkers have blurred. As a result, they care less about death, and that's what we saw with the group in the house being so careless. That's my theory anyway.

I'm questioning everything about Abraham and Eugene. I expect that the truth we'll later learn will bear little resemblance to what they talked about in this episode. I'm not sure which direction this will go. I've read what happened in the comics, but I'm not taking that as a map with what they do with the TV show. But I don't believe a word of what I heard from them this past week.

  13. I'm not sure what choice Tara had in the matter. She was surrounded by threatening men with guns, a woman with a gun, and her only ally was unconscious. She could have yelled at them to leave her alone, but they might have just grabbed her and put her on the truck whether she liked it or not.

I'd go with Abraham as the idiot of the week, for not teaching Eugene how to shoot, for getting into a brawl when walkers could hear and swarm in, for taunting walkers and getting his body so close to theirs while wearing a tank top. And for that awful dye job.

  14. Oh my god, I absolutely love this poll! This first three episodes have had really bonehead moments

  15. Ha! Glad you enjoyed! Don't expect it every week though, I'm usually just more sympathetic to the characters. This week a lot of them seemed to be acting rather stupidly - too many to ignore. ;)

  16. Were they threatening toward Tara though? I didn't get that vibe from this episode. From their interactions on the truck with the walker, I got the feeling she went willingly. And wasn't she given a gun? Her decision made more sense if it was just her, since he had no group or family left, and the rest of the prison group might be hostile to her if they meet up with her, but she knew Glenn was determined to find Maggie, and she letting him be transported hundreds of miles away while he was unconscious. But anyway, Tara was most sympathetic of the group, and apparently others agree with you because no one has voted for her yet.

Abraham seemed to be able to handle the walkers, but agree with your point about Abraham's dye job.

  17. I hope I don't have to expect this poll, I want the characters to start acting sensibly.

  18. For me, a toss-up between Eugene's Epic Truck Fail and Random Extra Guy Using Toilet Wrong. Also maybe a special shout-out to Get Some Clothes Rosita (realize she's from the comics, but seriously??), and Tyreese from last week, for leaving kids and a baby alone in the woods (I get what he was trying to do, just seems like maybe not the smartest way).

Hysterical poll, love it. Also, just wanna say that I think Chris Hardwick does a *phenomenal* job on Talking Dead, but I'm giving him a "Quarter-Bonehead" this week because he spoiled the Jeff Kober thing for me! All right, I admit I'm probably one of maybe eight people who had NO idea who this actor was before Talking Dead. But for me (and let's assume seven other viewers like me), guy on porch = just another guy. Hardwick asking "Do you think we'll see that guy again?" was a totally fair question. But when he started going on about the guy's "big name," past show credits, recognizable face, etc. etc. he pretty much answered his own question for me. So BOOOO Chris Hardwick!! (Okay okay, I totally love you anyway.) ;)

  19. Definitely agree that they're heading into McCarthy territory -- more and more, each episode is reminding me of The Road (with maybe a little Mad Max and/or Book of Eli thrown in). So far, really liking this direction.

  20. Ha! There were so many choices, it was hard to pick one. With Rosita, I'm assuming that the dress choices will match the personality, as we get to know her better? But it was kind of funny was that Rick was wearing a jacket in the same episode that Rosita was in short-shorts.

On the Kober one, don't feel bad - I've seen the actor before, and I watched the scene three times, and I didn't put two and two together. I think I've just gotten used to actors looking a little familiar but not being able to place them. The Talking Dead is really funny, isn't it? I wonder if the TWD would be anywhere near as successful as it is without it.

  21. You're right. She does look a barbie! She's wearing the big hoop earrings too. That group was all pretty clean, actually. I wonder where they were coming from.
