The Originals - Review of Episode 1.13 - Crescent City

23 Feb 2014

In ‘Crescent City’ the witches of the French Quarter showed the Originals that they’re not playing around. All three siblings found themselves in extremely dangerous situations. Klaus was stabbed with a magical dagger in his heart that he can’t seem to remove. Rebekah was attacked by the werewolves. And Elijah faced with the decision of who to save: one of his immortal siblings or mortal and pregnant Hayley from burning to death. Monique was resurrected after Papa Tunde was killed in the previous episode and decided to side with Celeste. Father Kieran was cursed just like Cami’s brother. Hayley finally got to meet some of her family members. And by the end of the episode Klaus and Rebekah have been kidnapped and Elijah is royally pissed off.

Favorite scene: Rebekah finally gets to have some fun, however brief it may be. Oliver may have stabbed her in the back later in the episode, but seeing Rebekah, as Oliver put it, dance her ass off warmed my heart. I’m guessing the next episode won’t be as pleasant for her.

Best betrayal: Poor Elijah, he really does have a type and that type is manipulative. I can’t judge Tatia, but Katherine, Celeste and even Hayley back when she was on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ definitely fit the profile. My heart broke for him as Celeste screwed him over in the worst way possible, by going after the people he loves. As we saw at the end of the episode, whatever feelings Elijah had left for Celeste, they’ve been replaced by hatred. Great job Celeste, you pissed off the nice one.

Best mention: If you’ve read my previous reviews, you probably know that I’ve had a problem with the lack of Josh. But in this episode he finally got a mention. Apparently he’s been demoted to Hayley’s messenger. I would’ve liked it better had he actually been in the episode though, but for now I’ll settle for this. I know that with Davina still gone, there’s wouldn’t be much use for him but I’d like to see him form a bond with someone else, Hayley or Rebekah perhaps. I think it would increase his survival chances.

Most awkward moment: Hayley’s meeting with Jackson was cute, but also kind of awkward. Since Hayley didn’t grow up in the pack, an arranged marriage sounds as weird to her as it would to us. Imagine how you’d react if some guy you just met told you, you were supposed to get married to unite two families. I don’t know about you guys but I’d laugh in his face.
Best crucial decision: I know a lot of people were upset that Elijah chose to save Hayley. I’m aware that his feelings for her might have played a role here but I think we’re forgetting the most important fact. As mentioned in my brief description of the episode: Hayley is mortal. No matter what happens to Klaus and Rebekah, they’ll still be alive (or undead). Hayley and her baby on the other hand would’ve died in that fire. I realize that Klaus probably won’t see it that way, but I hope he at least appreciates that Elijah saved his unborn child. Saving Jackson however, that was purely for Hayley, no question.

Dumbest move: You think Klaus would’ve learned by now, but no, he still thinks violence is the best way to solve things. Well that sure backfired. Now I’m guessing the events at the end of this episode and the next one won’t make him calmer. This is war.

Most ungrateful brat: Ah Monique. Sophie spent months trying to resurrect her and this is the thanks she gets. Monique (almost) kills her. I’d get it if she was mad at Davina or Marcel, but Sophie risked her own life to bring her back. And if she’s pissed that Sophie had something to do with stopping the Harvest, she needs to be reminded that after the first girl’s throat was slit, she wasn’t that excited to continue either. I hope they either give her some redeeming qualities or just kill her again because I’m not really a fan of this Monique.
Best quotes: Rebekah: “Josh isn’t dead yet? Well, good on him. I love a nice survival story.” Hayley: “I just wanted to meet my family. I never imagined I’d meet my husband from some weird-ass arranged marriage.”
Elijah: “I’m going to kill them all.”

I know this review was a little late, but I had some personal problems (that have now been solved). I figured posting it right before the new episode would be a nice recap so that everyone's up to speed again. So check in next week for a new review (I mean it this time) and share your opinions of 'Crescent City' in the comments.

  1. Good article, but I'm pretty sure Sophie's dead.

  3. Hadn't ready any interviews yet, that's a shame. I'd grown to like her. Had I known I'd included a part about Sophie in my review, o well maybe in next week's

  4. Good review! Just have to disagree on some points. ;-) Klaus taking the Violent approach is just a great way to proof his power cause he really can't be killed. And no King likes to wait. ;-) Monique yeah she was portrayted badly but I like this appearence much more than her preHarvest appearence. She looked mad probably cause of being brain washed but it was really great twist to see her kill Sophie. I mean with VD and the Originals no one has to stay dead permanently and I hope Sophie gets isn't dead yet and will get some space to evolve. I mean this show is really hard on the Deveraux witches, I hope there is a revengful Deveraux somewhere eager to appear and take care of Monique and Davina. I think I didn't get! shouldn't Sophie be superpowerful as she harvested Esther's powers? I'm so glad Rebekah got a new Beau but hopefully she kills him easily for his betrayal. I want Josh back as well.

  5. I think it was dumb of Klaus to take the knife with him. But just asking the witches to reverse the hex on Kieran would not have worked IMO so he probably thought threatening Monique was the only way to get them to un-do it.

    Sophie is dead for good.

Sadly I don't think Rebekah will kill Oliver (even though she should) because he's supposed to recurring (as is Jackson). I do think it was really dumb on Elijah's part to save Jackson - he's a total stranger - Elijah should have just grabbed Hayley and then vamp-sped off to try to find Rebekah (who should have been somewhere near-by).
