Now that the main four have each had a centric each we get a what is essentially an ensemble piece this week, although I feel that a few of the cast in particularly do shine a little brighter than the rest. One, Aramis, may well be partly down to my personal attachment to the character, but his loner tendencies are at play here too as he feels responsible for recently widowed Agnes (
Amy Nuttall; Emmerdale, Downton Abbey) and believes that his word is his bond as he attempts to fulfil a promise he has made to her to rescue her child against an order from on high.
Another is Louis, Ryan Gage is simply wonderful this week as the King is thrown into turmoil at his mother’s unexpected arrival at court begging forgiveness and pleading that her life is in peril. The treacherous Marie de Medici (
Tara Fitzgerald; Game of Thrones, Waking the Dead) had previously been banished on pain of death due to a failed coup against the crown years before, and her reappearance has a strange effect on her son as he struggles with a range of conflicting emotions before reverting almost to a childlike state, including an amusing temper tantrum or two.
Constance also takes a turn in the spotlight this week as the only person in the gang able to go undercover, albeit a tad reluctantly at first, and scout out the lay of the land where Agnes’ kidnapped son is being held. It’s more the role she is asked to play rather than the risk involved that has her concerned, as we saw in the trailer she has no problem when push comes to shove in defending the baby with a bit of deft swordplay at all, but she pulls it off with aplomb.

I missed her in episode 5! I'm going to assume that it's taking the role of a "mother" in a way that will be more difficult for her.

Excited to see the character of Louis get explored a bit more he has been rather one note so far. Also any Aramis is good for me.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed, I have to say that I enjoyed this episode far more than the previous one which I found a little too bogged down in politics in places and not quite enough action.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that there isn't really any Aramis/Porthos time alone, Aramis spends most of his time with Agnes after a very brief period with D'Artagnan at the start, while Porthos & Athos are with Treville guarding the King and Queen on a hunting trip elsewhere. About halfway through all four of them meet up for a short while (with Constance), and then again towards the end they are reunited as they track Aramis & Agnes down again. There are a few funny moments with the Musketeers, but really much of the comedy comes from Louis this week I think, his tantrums are well done XD
It looks an interesting episode, the press release mentions someone called Ninon, who I assume is going to based on Ninon de l'Enclos - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninon_de_l'Enclos
ReplyDeleteIt is in places, there's a few skirmishes and small battle with some makeshift bombs that Athos improvises on the spot towards the end. There is a fair few talky talk scenes too though, the Cardinal and Marie de Medici have a some scenes where they both try to win a war of words for example, and Aramis and Agnes cover quite a lot of exposition. Though both of these examples flow well and don't hinder the episode, but add to the character development of those involved imo.
ReplyDeleteLol yes, Tuesday is the day the BBC free the episode up for online, thank god, I was busting at the seams wanting to talk about it XD. Not really the role of a mother, she actually muses along those lines in this episode, but something similar.
ReplyDeleteThey only really share one short scene alone, it's not one I'd really call romantic (but I'm not a shipper, sorry hun), although D'Artagnan does say he doesn't want to see her get hurt when she offers to go fight. But then he almost immediately comes up with a plan that means her going undercover and into danger anyway, while at the same time ignoring her talking about wanting to be a mother. Men huh! lol. But he and Aramis are watching over her at all times, and he's taught her well with a sword ;)
I think both he and Anne are in this one far more than they have any of the others, we've seen that he can be pretty childlike at times before but there is no mistaking it this time round XD He's so easily led too, very quick to trust what he is told by anyone, and very emotional. All the things a strong ruler shouldn't be probably, bless him.
ReplyDeleteCharacter development is good. The king needs a bit more fleshing out. Plus, I like the intrigue they bring in with characters like Marie de Medici. Based on the preview maybe that intrigue will help heighten the cardinal's overall plot and motivations... Maybe?
ReplyDeleteThis episode seems to be a really good one, especially for Monsieur Aramis... I was really looking forward to it, specialy when I saw the promotionnal photos (the one with Aramis and Agnes was pretty interesting...) In three words, how would you qualify this episode for Aramis ?

Hmmm, not a great deal, but then I was expecting it to a lot knowing the relationship the two had in real life so maybe I was just a tad disappointed on that score, lol. But it's obvious he won't give up the power he has easily, and he'll destroy those in his way without a second thought still.
ReplyDeleteKinda like the idea of them switching things up. Porthos and Athos should be interesting. Plus, Aramis going off on his own has growing appeal to me. Kinda like these loner tendencies they gave him and how that drives some of his actions.

ReplyDeleteShe's begging for protection from an unknown assassin, we get to see the party attacked on the road when under guard of Athos and Porthos, so she's basically at court to keep her safe. While there she is trying to build bridges with her son and daughter-in-law, obviously the Cardinal objects to this ;)

From the trailer, it looks like the three of them are at the same place with the baby. And also scenes with maybe all four of the musketeers and Constance???
Who is Vincent ? And does Queen Anne and Aramis have scenes together ?
ReplyDeleteHe's Marie's body guard, and I'm afraid not, Aramis doesn't go to court at all if I remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteShe has one with them at the end, but isn't the focus of it, and that one with Aramis from the promo but the other two or so scenes she in she is with the baby. D'Artagnan appears for a second at the end of the Aramis one, but she's not pleased with him at all in it!

ReplyDeleteThis isn't really from a scene between the two of them, but one with a lot of others in the room too. They are involved in a number of scenes, though Louis has one or two more than Anne I'd say, and they are all good :)
ReplyDeleteHmm, it's only a few seconds long and takes place at the end. I just had to search for it in the episode cos I didn't even remember Aramis being at court at all, lol. The promo photos are only really snaps that show off the cast well I think, rather than being important to the plot most of the time. Well, even then they don't always get it right, inexplicably there isn't one of Constance for example for this episode, so I had to grab one from episode 1 to use for the preview :s
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Richelieu with the musketeers in a scene together. I hope there will be some in coming episodes. Too bad it isn't on this one, I thought that maybe, finally the Cardinal would have has the opportunity to put a face on Aramis' name, because if I recall, he knows the name of Adele's lover, he probably knows he is a musketeer because Milady returned his pistol, but he's never actually been in the same room as Aramis. Ever.

Based on the trailer, I'm going to guess that D'Artagnan will interject during Constance's fight with the bad guy thus upsetting her since she thought she was handling it just fine. Then you'll get Aramis telling D'Artagnan that he doesn't always have to get involved! :) I had that theory since the trailer! I just don't see D'Artagnan standing by and watching Constance fighting on her own. He wouldn't be able to do so! :)

That made me laugh too. Though, originally, I couldn't tell what exactly he said so I kept thinking he was calling Aramis, "Stupid and suicidal" instead.
ReplyDeleteIt says in the press release that Ninon gets under Athos' skin, so I think he is going to fall under her spell, so to speak, maybe? It will be interesting to see him fall for another woman after Milady, if it is going to be based on Ninon de l'Enclos then I think that she certainly seems like the kind of intellectual he would fall for, and that others would be scared of just because she is female with a strong mind and influence.
