  1. As usual, a brilliant episode.

Wow at Maggie being the reason why Rust and Marty's partnership was ruined. Although, Rust leaving the department in the first place started the deterioration of the partnership, this made it official. Now, I can't wait to see Rust and Marty talk for the first time in 10 years. Should be interesting! I can't believe there are only two episodes left! Things are starting to get intense. Please renew this show, HBO.

  2. Poor, everything that Rust did was unusual for everything that came before this episode and the other stuff was kind of predictable.

  3. I am so delighted by the reunion of Rust and Marty even if Marty had to ruin it all by bringing a gun to the party! Should be great seeing the last two episodes focus on their renewed partnership.

Marty is an idiot, he really is but time is a flat circle and he was doomed to repeat his adulterous ways because he never learns. I really don't blame Maggie for what she did though I felt a bit bad for Rust being caught in the situation. Even if that was the reason for the big fall out in 2002 I think it would have happened anyway even without Rust and Maggie sleeping with each other. Marty was just wrapped up in his own bullshit and didn't want to focus on Rust's investigation and eventually they would have come to blows over it.

Tuttle freaks the hell out of me, powerful men abusing their power and wealth - this is not good.

  4. It is so getting another season but I think they waiting for the next big stars to sign on before announcing it.

  5. I wonder whether the fans will stick with this show next season if the cast isn't clones of Matthew and Woody.

  6. Another really good episode. I love how every episode feels like it's attempting to mislead us. Tuttle was a real creep, but I also didn't notice the stuffed Large Cat (don't know what it was, a mountain lion perhaps?) in the Chief's office before now.

Interesting way to see Marty's relationship with everyone unravel in the past and see the beginning of them come together again in the future.

It was also interesting to be reminded of the "scare face" when both Marty and Rust end up with their faces injured after their fight...I kind of wonder if the killer where's a mask (The Mask is a name of one of pieces apart of The King in Yellow) and/or if when these girls are drugged they all see a scared face and/or if they are seeing something that is not "yet" there (Thinking of Rust's comments before about how the future might already be behind everyone) I feel like it's going to be a supernatural ending or that the super natural phenomenon may be explained with sheer "madness".

Can't wait to see the last two episodes!

  7. Well I do hope the cast is the quality that it is this season, but I wouldn't watch next season if they were clones of Rust and Marty

  8. Well I also read that they may also change the stylization and/or the genre too. It might not take place in Louisiana and/or it might be more upscale detectives, ect. They want to explore the meaning of "True Detective" from multiple angles.

  9. I'm so stupid that I only write 4 word response that only really consists of name calling.

  10. I think that's true in the sense that he is becoming more "obsessed", but IMO it's not completely uncharacteristic of him, because most of the things Rust says and what Rust does are often contradictory.

I think the show has just focused so much on Marty's family life (and the break downs of it) that it hasn't really let us see who Rust really is (there are no people in his life we see him make personal connections to, which is probably an intentional contrast to how we come to view Mary) and because I think the magical realism aspects are with his character specifically, he is more of a character that is represents the transformitive and/or metaphorically expounds on the anthropomorphic aspects of the series (a lot of time in literature we see it in the form of 'beast becoming man' or 'man becoming beast')

  11. I said Matthew and Woody, not Rust and Marty.

  12. Right and I'm wondering whether people will be drawn to that as much. A part of American Horror Story's success is the continuity of the cast despite everything else around them changing. Characters are why people like stories, but this show's concept started with two strong leading men that the audience really likes and to pivot away from that is the very opposite of 99% of television. Fun to see where this goes.

  13. It's a good question! The writing is so within itself here that it seems like it would be hard to repeat without following some kind of blue-print, but I'm hopeful that as long as they get an interesting cast and make stories that are intricate and/or character driven that it can still be a good thing! -But I'm anxious too to see how they go about the next story!

  14. Oh I wasn't saying that's what you meant but the reason Matthew and Woody are so great is because of the characters they portray. Therefore, I hope they aren't clones of Matthew/Rust or Woody/Marty.

  15. That's true but the scene in particular that emphasizes my point is where he has sex with Maggie just seemed almost cliché and unlike him because it made him seem like a romantic noir detective which he isn't.

  16. Or is he? I mean the minute she walked in I knew it was going to happen, not just because I think it was easy to guess that it would, but also because of her shoes (they are similar to the ones featured in the opening theme/title sequence and it's kind of the one thing in it that is out of place with the landscape/cinematography)

I think it was strange that he mowed their lawn knowing how Hart is. There are times where I think he's passive-aggressive rather than just passive-passive. The thing with Rust is there IS something Romantic there (his prose is like poetry), even if the whole setting defies film noir. I do think there are some film noirish aspects to it, such as cynical attitudes and sexual motivation. Really when I think about it from that genre perspective I think Rust and Marty are each a perfect half to a singular film noir detective.

The thing I like about True Detective is that each episode feels like it does subtly open to various kinds of crime dramas. Just as you said, this one has a more film noir vibe.

  17. I guess it depends if you saw the rest of an episode as being very noir, but I will definitely be more impressed with that scene if what you said is true about the opening credits.

  18. Well she's wearing black heals and they click distinctly on the floor. In the opening sequence you see the outline of the back of a naked women with images within it, the shape of her kneels down on top of her solid black heals. There's almost a sci-fi like contrast with that part of the opening sequence because of the way the black heals are.

I'm not saying that True Detective is "distinctively" noir (I know it's what the directer was trying not to make), rather that there are elements of it, just as there are elements to a lot of other kinds of genres such as magical realism, light science fiction, philosophy/religion, psychedelic, has heightened mundane -similar to a post apocalyptic reality. It's also at times atmospheric, and the thing with the killing, deer antlers, and the triangular objects hints at anthropomorphism.

It's really not of any specific genre outside of crime (but even that can be tested when you add these other elements), but yet it holds a lot various genre elements and I think certain episodes home in on a certain genre more than another episode. (Like that episode where Ginger and Rust go through all of those houses was like some was so different than the way anything else had yet to be filmed. It was like I was there) I think it's really unique.

  19. I read earlier today that the showrunner has interesting in keeping Woody and Mathew on, but in new roles like American Horror Story does with their actors. HE did not say that was his only option of course though so ....

  20. I would love for them to do something like that but they have both stated its a one season deal for them because of the time commitment (it took 6 months to film S1). Though I bet HBO are trying their best to get them to reconsider!

  21. Hmm...supernatural?
I do not get that feeling at all honestly.

I think it is more bad, evil men doing bad and evil things. Whether or not it is a good old boys cult (centered around the police and government types) that preys on kids and has ritual kills, or more reclusive unknown until revealed cult members, I think there will be a clandestine group responsible for the goings on.

I think the plot reminds me a lot of the ritualistic rape and murders associated with the big cult/ occult phase in the 80s where anything spooky was dubbed Satanic on sight.

One case that really mirrors the plot is from Louisiana in 2005:

I do agree about the deliberate misleading facts and events though!
I love how everything is not black and white and so much is cloaked in mystery at this point still.

I always thought they tried to make everyone suspect Rust, so I looked at Hart more so! XD

  22. I have not been following the comments on the TD polls since I have been waiting and watching episodes 2 or 3 at a time, but the series is simply BRILLIANT!

Looking forward to the next episode as it should reveal much of connective information we need to know what exactly has been going on!

  23. I had those thoughts too!

I hope that the process was so fulfilling that both actors want to be a part of series that is so successful on many levels. A good experience like that can change minds.... sometimes.

Maybe it will stoke their artistic flames? I hope so!

  24. Well more like magical realism, but I think that the ending will open up to something distinctly more supernatural or it will end in a kind of "madness" (The reference to "The King in Yellow"), where it's left to the viewer to decide what madness really is (something explainable or something supernatural).

"I do agree about the deliberate misleading facts and events though! I love how everything is not black and white and so much is cloaked in mystery at this point still."

It's amazingly debatable what the truth is! I can't wait to see where it goes and what threads are the important ones! XD

  25. I would love that, but it looks like they are leaning towards to female leads for next season to counter act the audiences belief of anti-female sentiment of this season.
