    I'm still holding out hope that they might introduce some version of Flynn Ryder in OUAT. Best Disney character ever. Plus, Zachary Levi could easily play him in real life, and he's sort of under the Disney banner with his role in Thor 2, so...you never know.

    Not trying to sound racist, but I'm still not sure how I feel about them changing the physical appearance of Rapunzel this much yet. I mean, she is known for her long GOLDEN hair. I'm sure I'll love her once the episode airs but at the moment, I'm still weary.

    This is the same show where Mulan's in love with Aurora, Peter Pan was a sociopathic murderer, and countless other changes. OAUT always has different takes on fairy tales. Roll with it.

    I know. I'm not that dumb. I'm just saying that they've never taken away the feature which identifies them before. Pan was still a young boy (Sorta), Mulan was still a female warrior (Not that I've seen that movie but that's all that I pretty much know about it). In every version of the tale that I've read, the prince stood at the bottom of the tower calling out ""Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb the golden stair". I'm not sure if that's said in Tangled as I haven't seen that either.


    I personally just identify her with golden hair.

    I plan to. I've been meaning to see it ever since I saw Frozen (I know it was done by the same team). Every time that I've gone to watch it though I seem to get sidetracked by finding some sort of show to watch. Haha.

    Racism has nothing to do with your opinion, don't worry. And I was victim of racism where I live when I was little. The same example happen with the black Johnny Storm (Fantastic 4) that will be in the next movie, or when they changed the genre of Jack and the beanstalk. (I hate evil Peter Pan, but I love sleeping Warrior though, since there wasn't love interest in the original legend)

    If we are talking about Disney, Tiana, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Esmeralda are in my opinion better and more charismatic characters than Rapunzel. Beyond that, there are hundreds of tales not european with great characters not white. And beyoooond that, why not call her Rudaba, the persian princess in which was based Rapunzel?

    I don't like, sorry.

    OUAT is based on the concept that the Disney version is "more authentic than the original" so what the Grimm/Foklore version says doesn't matter.

    I'm uncertain about the hair color as well, solely because it was an important plot point in Tangled and I was hoping they might borrow more heavily from that film. Plus, I was thinking it would be a little more flowing and not so frizzy. But that has nothing to do with race, and I'm sure the show's take on Rapunzel will still be brilliant.

    The colour isn't THAT important though. They go from saying "golden stair" to just "stair". Not really much of a difference at all. I'm sure the story will survive the change.

    It's not the same than Mulan falling in love with Aurora.
    It would be the same as casting an afroamerican as Ariel, or a caucasian as Pocahontas, maybe a redhead as Mulan...

    Sorry, but how would be casting a blonde Rapunzel a "shameless white washing" when the Grimm Brothers themselves wrote "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb the *golden* stair"?


    I don't care that they cast actors that represent minorities, I actually like it. In my opinion Sinqua Walls was a great (and sexy) Lancelot.


    But I believe you have to be true to the real stories - the real ones, not the Disney ones. (so, now that I think about it, you are right about Ariel. She's never described as red head in the original story. So, if they would have cast an actress from another ethnicity I wouldn't be so sceptic as I am with Rapunzel.)

    Anyway, Sif is going to be on Agents of SHIELD, so perhaps we might see Zachary on that show someday as well.

    I was referring to the hypothetical casting of Pocahontas and Mulan (if you go with the typical red hair/pale skin) who are WOC. Turning them into white women would be whitewashing.


    Also, I don't understand your position regarding the faithfulness to Grimm... characters: you're okay with Ariel not having red hair but don't seem to have any issues with her suffering while walking and dying in the end.

    I was just saying that characters that have been physically described on the original story should be kept like that. Ariel was never described as a redhead, but Rapunzel was described as a blonde.

    How can the Grimm Version be whitewashed when they were the ones that originally wrote it? when it was a German folk story/fairy tale?
    Well, unless you have seen a person with dark skin and blonde hair (naturally, ofc) I think that blonde = white. But I do like how some blondes/light colors matches with dark skin (like Storm from X-men, she was awesome) I thought that they would put a blonde wig to Alexandra's character, I wouldn't mind in that case.

    See, that's exactly the point. People get fixated on the hair colour because such light coloured hair means the character would be equally light.
