Scene Of The Week - January 5, 2014 - POLL

5 Jan 2014

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we've seen recently.

COMMUNITY, "Introduction to Teaching", January 2, 2014, Actors: Danny Pudi, Kevin Corrigan and more
The Scene: Abed's meltdown at the Nicolas Cage class
Pablozky21:
The one hour season premiere of Community offered a bunch of great scenes that assures us that we are in the right direction for a great season, so it's hard to pick, but my favorite is Abed's meltdown at the Nicolas Cage class; we've never seen Abed so out of control, or at least not like this. My favorite part? "I'm a sexy cat". Community is back!

ELEMENTARY, "The Diabolical Kind", January 2, 2014, Actors: Natalie Dormer, Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu
The Scenes: Sherlock and Moriarty talk at the end & Watson and Moriarty talk
Justyna Kubica:
I have to admit, I wasn't so happy about the last season's twist that Irene Adler is Jamie Moriarty. But I think this episode was a great way to show me how well this storyline can actually work. And one of the main things that make it so good is Natalie Dormer and her interactions with Jonny Lee Miller. They have one of the best dynamics not just on this show, but among all the shows I watch. I find Moriarty an exceptionally interesting character. Normally I wouldn't even consider rooting for someone with a history like her but in the moments like this I find myself hoping for her redemption. For people who say they don't understand love, both Jamie and Sherlock are willing to do quite a lot in its name. I was very much surprised to learn that Moriarty has a daughter, maybe even more to see how much she actually cares about her child. She risked a lot to save this little girl. And I really enjoyed the moment when Sherlock finds her covered in her own blood and surrounded by the bodies of the kidnappers and they talk about a change in her choices, the effect they have on each other. It's a sad, but quite intriguing moment which left me wondering about the future of these characters. And both the actors made such a great impression on me here that I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. What an intense and brilliant scene.
Virginia Fontana: The scene when Joan and Moriarty are alone and they have a little chat. Here we have two entirely oppositional characters with one big common interest: Sherlock Holmes. Moriarty's somewhat condescending fascination with Watson was taken down a few pegs when she learned that it was Holmes who chose to partner with Watson (rather than the other way around, as she assumed). I loved it when Joan said, "that bothers you." A tense and intriguing exchange!
A Dahne: Watson vs. Moriarty in a game of wits - Loved these two actors playing off of each other. It was tense and intriguing. I really hope Moriarty comes back. Also picked by Sharon Seymour

SHERLOCK, "The Empty Hearse", January 1, 2013, Actors: Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch and more, The Scenes: Watson finds out Sherlock's alive & Mrs. Hudson learns about John's new love
Justyna Kubica:
First of all, I really loved the entire episode. There were so many great scenes that I could name here, like: the fall theories, Sherlock and Mary saving John, Mrs. Hudson's (hilarious) reaction to John moving on, the reunions and more. But my favorite is definitely the part where Watson finds out about Sherlock being alive. The entire sequence, from the moment Holmes enters the restaurant and prepares his disguise right until the two part ways when John gets into the cab with Mary, was absolutely brilliant. Watson's reaction was pretty much exactly what I wanted, it felt real, very emotional and all three attacks on Sherlock made me laugh so hard. Love these two! I can't believe Holmes hasn't even considered the possibility he won't be welcome. Then again, John's the one who always makes him realize these sort of things (like when he should apologize people for his behavior), so I guess that only shows how much Sherlock needs and missed his best friend. Another reason why I loved this scene is Martin Freeman. Really powerful performance, he was excellent not just in this moment, but in the entire episode. Also, this part is a great introduction for Mary, who made a good impression on me, almost immediately. To sum up, amazing actors, meaningful character moments, dialogues, direction and music in this scene. Kudos!
Diana Mack: Sherlock was such a beautiful episode and there were many parts I adored. I'll pick up this one: Mrs Hudson is happy that Watson moved on with his life since 'his boyfriend' died, then the doctor replies "Sherlock wasn't my boyfriend! Listen to me, I'm not gay!" best part.

THE BIG BANG THEORY, "The Hesitation Ramification", January 2, 2013, Actors: Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, The Scenes: Penny's proposal & Leonard tells Sheldon about Penny's proposal
Diana Mack:
Down on her kneels, Penny asks Leonard to marry him. Plot twist, he isn't sure about the answer.
Pablozky21: It was a very emotionally affecting scene, especially considering that Sheldon kept a very empathic attitude with him (for most part of the scene any way) and it's even more deep when Leonard honestly says that he doesn't know why he didn't say yes and how he fears his relationship might be over. It's a very well crafted scene that hits the emotional beats just right. Also picked by Babar Suhail and Sharon Seymour

THE CRAZY ONES, "The Face of a Winner", January 2, 2013, Actors: Sarah Michelle Gellar and more
The Scene: The intervention for Sydney
Klutzy Girl:
After Sydney starts playing the client's game and gets a little intense, everyone else stages an intervention. That was a pretty hilarious scene, my favorite from the night. Also picked by Sharon Seymour

  3. I agree so much with Justyna Kubica. It's funny how good are both Sherlock Holmes based shows. I personally enjoy Elementary but am obsessed with Sherlock. In this particular episodes I loved the one-on-one with Sherlock and Moriarty (I enjoy Natalie Dormer's performance a great deal) not only was the acting superb but also what they said that in a way helps us to understand them a bit more, the bit where she talks about watching herself through someone else's eyes was really interesting and added a lot to her character's depth.
In Sherlock, on the other hand, I finished watching and tried to think about specially good scenes and almost five came to mind right away while other just kept comming later, I agree mostly with the sequence where Watson and Sherlock meet and they get kicked off of many different establishments, it was hilarious and spot-on. I had been waiting for a long time for this come-back and it certainly did not dissapoint, I loved the way they dealt with the way Sherlock pulled the suicide off and how they played with the different ways it could've happened. The acting was as usual amazing from both the leads and with the short webisode I realized just how much I missed Sherlock.
The thing I do enjoy more from Elementary than Sherlock is their pick for Moriarty (the amazing Natalie Dormer) and how they gave that a really fun and interesting twist, Sherlock's Moriarty, on the other hand, was good but not good enough to be in the same level of epicness as Sherlock and Watson are. I'm one of those that think that without that epic rivalry the show loses a bit (never enough to stop being my favourite show) and I hope that somehow we haven't lost that nemesis already; although I really enjoyed some more screen time with the Holme's brothers and seeing a bit more of his family dynamics. The scene where they play operation and deductions was pretty awesome as well. Just love him, love them, love it all.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this things.

  4. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and write such a nice comment! Really agree with you on pretty much everything too ;) As for the epic rivalry on Sherlock, I am wondering if this new bad guy we are meeting this season can feel the void after Moriarty. Hopefully yes, at least on some levels, cause I agree, it's always so great to have a truly interesting opponent against our heroes. Makes things even better.

  5. Sherlock: John finding out he is alive and beating the shit out of Sherlock.
Elementary: Moriarty talking with Joan and flirting with her in her own messed up way
Community: Jeff hanging out with Buzz and finding the benefits of being a teacher

  6. I personally hated Sherlock (boy, am I going to get downvoted for this!) I'm sorry, but I hated this whole vibe like Jesus had risen from the dead. If that was an American show, people would have thought that it was cheesy as hell. But hey, it's a BBC show so it must be good!

So, my vote goes entirely on Elementary. I have to disagree with Justyna, I loved Natalie Dormer as Moriarty from the start. From the moment she said "As if men had a monopoly on murder", she has become one of the most interesting villains I can remember. And her return made me love her even more. She is just as much a mastermind as Sherlock is and it's amazing to see those two interact, because they can communicate on a level that nobody else can.

  8. I can't keep up with my recordings! I've yet to see this week's Elementary, and now I'm excited to, nor have I seen Community yet. However, I never miss TBBT because it's so, so--relaxing, I guess is the word. So that's the only one of the above shows I watched this week, and I voted for the scene where Leonard, in talking with Sheldon, confronts his feelings about Penny's proposal. He's wondering if, in not accepting, he's doomed the relationship. He may also be wondering if perhaps marriage with Penny is actually not such a good idea. Or maybe he was just turned off by the fact that Penny was drunk out of her mind when she asked him.

  12. I haven't seen Elementary yet this week and wasn't overly impressed with either TBBT or Sherlock, my fav scenes this week have been from Banshee (previews) or Lilyhammer (catchup), so haven't voted for anything I'm afraid. I'm also going to miss tonight's Sherlock and have to spend at least the next 24-36 hours avoiding spoilers from that :( My time for TV life sucks atm :\

  14. "Nick, Hank and Wu come to precinct looking like Ghosbusters"

I completely forgot about that! That was great! Laughed so hard ;)

  15. The two scenes, you can even consider them one scene, that had me at the edge of my seat the most was in Elementary when Holmes figured out Moriarty's code, revealing she has a daughter, and Moriarty's escape.

  16. Another brilliant one, was actually considering it ;)

  17. Didn't pull back much, did I? LOL. Looking foreward to it, I'm pretty sure the Sherlock crew can't dissapoint.

  18. The thing about that one was that I figured out Moriarty was the mother from the moment the kidnaper put the girl on the phone and the fact that Sherlock took longer threw me off a bit.

  19. Sherlock was freakin' amazing - I loved it when Sherlock is trying to surprise John and he is like Surprise!!! and John doesn't notice. I cracked up. And Martin Freeman's acting!!! When he slams his fist down on the table -- it was an oh sh** moment. Brilliant. Anyways, my votes go to the Sherlock scenes. I need to catch up on Elementary and TBBT.
