Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

Tuesday 1/14/14 Metered Markets
Clean Sweep for CBS

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 10.1/16
NBC 3.8/ 6
ABC 3.0/ 5
Fox 2.4/ 4
CW 1.4/ 2

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 1/15/13:
CW: +27, NBC: +12, Fox: + 4, ABC: + 3, CBS: – 4

—–

-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “Person of Interest” (CBS)

-Shoo-in for a Season Two Renewal:
“The Originals” (CW)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Dads” (Fox), “Trophy Wife” (ABC), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “Killer Women” (ABC)

—–

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Tuesday overnight sweep for CBS with its combination of “NCIS” (12.3 rating/19 share – No. 1 for the night), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (10.0/15) and “Person of Interest” (8.2/14), which bested year-ago occupant “Vegas” (7.0/12 on 1/05/13) by 17 percent.

In week two news, ABC drama “Killer Women” dropped to a very distant third-place 2.5/ 5 at 10 p.m., which was 11 percent below the already DOA 2.8/ 5 one week earlier. And that 2.8 in the overnights translated into a mere 3.96 million viewers and a 0.9 rating/2 share among adults 18-49. But since ABC just yanked “The Assets” after two episodes, it will probably air the remaining episodes of deadly “Killer Women.”

Earlier in the evening on ABC was “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.” with a series-low 3.9/ 6 from 8-9 p.m. (#2), followed by sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.1/ 5) and “Trophy Wife” (#3: 2.3/ 3) from 9-10 p.m. While “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will, no doubt, resonate among young adults, this is not the big hit the network was hoping for. And “The Goldbergs” has the best chance of snagging a second season renewal among ABC’s low-rated freshman mix.

Elsewhere, third-place NBC featured two-hours of utility player “The Biggest Loser” (3.7/ 6 from 8-10 p.m.) into a second-place 4.1/ 7 for “Chicago Fire” at 10 p.m. Fox continues to under-perform with its live-action comedy combination of “Dads” (#4: 2.2/ 3), Golden Globe winner “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 2.6/ 4), “New Girl” (#4: 2.6/ 4) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 2.1/ 3), which will be taking a break shortly. And The CW was on par with typical Tuesday overnight levels care of “The Originals” (#5: 1.5/ 2) and “Supernatural” (#5: 1.5/ 2), which is positive news for both. Consider “The Originals” a shoo-in to return next season, with a pick-up for veteran “Supernatural” dependent on the cost factor and the availability of all involved.

As a reminder, Tuesday on Fox in midseason will feature freshman comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at a new time, 9:30 p.m., on Feb. 4 (and in place of “The Mindy Project,” which is taking a break until April 1). And “Glee” moves into the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour on Feb. 25 (with “Dads” at 8 p.m. taking a break).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

  1. This guy has a serious problem with Supernatural, he looks ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  2. So true. TO and SP have the same rating, yet he always give TO the front seat

    ReplyDelete
  3. I'm happy for POI too. It's a great show

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hopefully it's up! The overnights look promising

    ReplyDelete
  5. It does. Can't wait for the early numbers to come in!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yayy for POI

    ReplyDelete
  7. He announced a new series low last week as well and the ratings were up. Let's wait for demo numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh yea not believing this guy he talks rubbish, i was talking more about it being not so consistent in ratings till now, it should have settled down by now

I think it has to due more with the fact that TO is a freshmen show and SPN is in it's ninth season.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Certainly that is true, but for that same reason, because SPN is in its last years, he could be a little more flattering towards it; congratulating it on having pulled up its ratings on a par with the newer CW shows.

    ReplyDelete
  11. HELL YESS ORIGINALS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Which is, in many ways, ridiculous. Shows generally drop year to year, but Supernatural is keeping up with the strongest performers on the CW even after nine years.

Also, for the record, with a pick-up for veteran “Supernatural” dependent on the cost factor and the availability of all involved. is not really an issue for next season. Jared and Jensen have already signed, the show runner came in last season, so he should be under contract for next season and be a known cost. They have moved new writers in and out over the years, so the writing costs are containable. I don't know about the rest of the crew, but most of the costs are set and were set to take the show to 10 seasons. As someone who covers TV, Berman should know all of this instead of subtly hinting that Supernatural really SHOULD be canceled, mostly because Berman has been dissing it for years and "WHY DOESN'T ANYONE LISTEN TO ME about what shows should be renewed?" is his viewpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Person Of Interest is the best!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. All I care about in this list is the Originals. I still can't watch Vampire Diaries but somehow I love the Originals. I don't get it. Happy to hear it is doing well. Hope it does better.

    ReplyDelete
  15. A didn't notice anything negative in his comment.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's more the fact that he can't ever give it praise like he does for the other shows in which they say they are doing great despite their age. He turns the age into something negative and brings up that because of it could not come back. I love The Originals but there have been days in which Supernatural beats TO yet he praises TO while bashing Supernatural. Now they get the same overnights and somehow he manages to make one sound awesome and the other a bubble show when we all know that Supernatural will be back.

Well, if it was only about 17% over the score of the not-very-succesful Vegas, it isn't a good sign. I know these numbers aren't directly related either to the total or the rating audience, but I'm a little worried. I wish the show at least a steady scorecard this year, last winter-spring was a pain to watch. (Not the show, the numbers!)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Im really happy that the Originals is doing so good. But im really sad for Mindy , i just started watching this show like 3 weeks ago and saw alle pisodes in 1 week, but its amazing.

Off topic: I have question about American Horror Story and since there are a lot of people in Ratings thread i hope someone will give me advice. I want to watch Season 3 but i have not seen S1 or S2. Is S3 absolutelly new story or do i need to watch S1+S2 too? Also is it very scary?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm sorry what exactly did he say to offend you now?

    ReplyDelete
  20. he didnt actually say anything unflattering though did he?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree he has issues with Supernatural, but didn't think his comments today were that bad. He said the ratings were posive for both TO and SPN and assuming that everyone wants to do another season, then the show should be renewed. For him, that's tame. I really don't see what looks ridiculous in that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He isnt a fan of the show, he doesnt follow Jared or Jensen at conventions or spend hours chatting on the net to fans so how would he know that the cast have signed on for more seasons?
Cost and availability are factors for any show, a 9 years show more so.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Absolutely new story. So you can watch the seasons in any order

    ReplyDelete
  24. Really sad for TMP it's really a solid show as well as Trophy Wife. I think last night's episode was one of the best so far, too bad abc virtually doesn't do anything to help promote the show

    ReplyDelete
  25. This time he was pretty neutral, but he never has anything nice to say about it.
    x
Look at how he managed to praise TO by qualifying it as "good for a second year renewal".
That gave him a way of mentioning TO withpout having to specifically mention SPN, which is on a par with it in the overnights and should have got a little boost from him too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I dont agree that he has a problem with the show, I just dont think he cares. The fact that every week SPN fans get riled up simply because he didnt put the show in the win column or give it an honourable mention or shower it with compliments is pretty pathetic.
He talked about TO getting a renewal becasue ratings wise for the CW it deserves it, he simply states that depending on cost and availibility of cast SPN would most likely be getting renewed too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. sixseasonsandamovie15 January 2014 at 15:55

Looks like a promising night for the CW, and one year ago, tuesdays were their worst days.

B99 tied with New Girl, but it'll lose on the demo.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree there was nothing actually offensive about the comments. He was just narrowing the factors for the renewal of an old show

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks, and is it really scary like horrors?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Im so pissed that TW is really low thst cancel that show :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. He always has. He was shaking his head for the early part of last year, claiming tired old SPN was only doing well in the ratings because of Arrow. He's always had a blind spot when it comes to SPN...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well that depends. For some it's scary, for some it's tame. I will say that the first season is probably the creepiest.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The show also trended on Twitter for a large part of the hour. The cast is doing an excellent job with promoting through live tweeting. It will be interesting to see if DVR and social media numbers really do play a big part in renewal decisions this year...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I subscribe what has been said. The seasons really are very different and they have zero to do with one another story wise. I tried the first season and really didn't like it, I couldn't even finish it. The second season, IMO, was one of the best seasons of a show I've ever seen, I completely loved it. Season 3 I like it and I think it's nice but I don't find it anywhere near as good as Season 2 . But a lot of people disagree on this, I don't think it's consensual at all because it really is like watching different shows!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybe if it was just the comment from today it wouldn't have bothered me but it's the fact that it's so repetitive. Last year he also kept insisting that Supernatural was doing good because of Arrow!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think I can even be considered a fan of Supernatural because I don't even watch it (I have watched the first two seasons over Christmas break, that's it), so I think I am relatively neutral towards this. His classifications are often wrong and far far from reality so that's not what bothers me. It's just that I never saw him caring so negatively about a show as he does for Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  37. How would he know? This guy's a media journalist!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'll bet SPN fans are the only ones who go on to his site and complain, he's probably just fighting fire with fire.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So obviously he should know that Jared and Jensen mentioned at a con a while back that they had signed on for another season?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Can you blame ABC if they cancel it, they already gave it a full season albeit low ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Why is B99 always so low :(

    ReplyDelete
  42. No special mention for Agents of SHEILD like last week when he had it as 'Fading', seriously what's with this guy?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am disappointed, I thought the Golden Globes huge attention could lead to a slight tick up this week. I am still pretty confident the show will be renewed though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah :( I really thought the ratings would increase more than that this week. At least we still have the post Super Bowl episode. :/

    ReplyDelete
  45. If Supernatural got a 8.5 it the demo by some miracle of TV, he would manage to say that "for an aging show, it shouldn't be THIS hard for them to be at The Walking Dead levels by now, and should in fact be consistently besting them", or some other spin. It's hilarious sometimes. he just won't throw Supernatural anything.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Surprised that B99 actually dropped after a Globes win just two days ago. I guess the potential new viewers decided to DVR it instead of watching live.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I actually think Arrow did help Supernatural at least in the beginning. And by the end of the season they were a good combo.
But then I always have a spot soft for those shows who have to open the night for a network, especially if they are freshman. And they still manage to score very good for CW.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Trophy wife :( Why you r so low?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Second season was scarier than the first to me.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, the Winchesters got the win over TO for now. Sam and Dean reign supreme at least on the CW's Tuesday night. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. sixseasonsandamovie15 January 2014 at 16:43

    This is dissapointing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. POI always frustrates me with overnights. Because usually the number of viewers goes up instead of the demo.

    ReplyDelete
  53. sixseasonsandamovie15 January 2014 at 16:44

Nothing changed at all. No noticiable drops or increases.

FOX low rated, CBS steady on every show, ABC tanking (but Goldbergs has been solid) and CW performing well. Chicago Fire dropped but the show scored the same high 1s on its first season.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Elena Wonderland15 January 2014 at 16:44

    Great for Supernatural :D

    ReplyDelete
  55. i wanna know too, i super into this show now, with all B99 casts, they just like a sweet family

    ReplyDelete

  57. Yes, he should. That's what media journalists do. They didn't say this in a secret meeting. They said it at a public event. I doubt the CW is hiding it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not very professional.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's one of those shows that is a little too in love with itself.

    ReplyDelete
  60. sixseasonsandamovie15 January 2014 at 16:58

WTF at Supernatural half-hours, 0.7/1.0? And despite this, the show managed to score a 1

    ReplyDelete
  61. How can SPN have had a .07 in the first half and then still get 1.0? Is that a typo?

    ReplyDelete
  62. That doesn't make any sense to me. Is it a typo?

    ReplyDelete
  63. At least AoS didn't fall.
Wonder if ABC will pull Killer Woman from schedule come Friday? They still have The Black Box left to put somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Just curious. The Originals went from a high of 2,070,000m- 0.9 to a low of 1,890,000m- 0.7; (- 180,000 ) while SPN from a low of 1,690,000m- 0.7 to a high of 2,230,000m- 1.0.( + 540,000 )

Has that any significance ratings wise, other than the numbers themselves?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think it has to be, it makes no sense that it has gotten a 0.7 at the half hour and still ended up with that rating.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Berman's half hours. So he probably messed up and won't update it. Every other site has ithe hour at 1.0/2.26. Going by his half hours it would be 0.8/1.96. Plus Supernatural rarely ever has an increase in the 2nd half hour. Yet here it's a half a million viewers and 3 tenths jump Seems very odd.

Also how is the hour 2.26 when according to his neither half hour had 2.26

    ReplyDelete
  67. I saw a poster at another site (TV and Numbers - not sure if we can say it) who posted 1.0/1.0 for SPN. That might be right.

    ReplyDelete
  68. They can't cancel it like they did with the Assets?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes, the can. Pulling from schedule is basically cancellation.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Agreed. I do give Arrow some credit as well.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I hope they won't! If they do, I hope ABC airs the remain episodes during summer.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The ratings are bad, it is very likely that they will cancel it.

    ReplyDelete
  73. All 3 seasons of AHS are completely stand-alone stories. So you can watch them in any order.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I keep telling myself there's a little chance they won't but as you said, the rating are really bad. Though I still don't get why Betrayal hasn't been canceled, its ratings have been really bad and still its 13 episodes aired.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Well yeah, considering many websites then ran articles saying that they had signed on to another season. It's kind of his job.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Usual highs for my three CBS shows. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think Betrayal hasn't been cancelled because ABC has billed as a limited series and they didn't have anything to replace it with. Same goes for OUATiW.

    ReplyDelete
  78. For any fan of Enlisted.

    via press note:

Friday's series premiere of ENLISTED grew +86% (from a 0.7 to a 1.3) in just the first three days of time shifted viewing

    ReplyDelete
  79. I had forgotten about that show. ABC is saving up a lot of stuff for summer it appears. It is very puzzling because it has also postponed The Quest which had the potential to do decently (it's from The Amazing Race creator for whatever it is worth). They are acting like they are having a very successful season when they plenty of holes in their schedule!

    ReplyDelete
  80. RIght now Mindy is my favorite show on air. I don't understand how it hasn't gained more viewers especially after sitting through New Girl. That show has become such garbage. Mindy shines in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  81. On other sites there is a big backlash over the ABC app. Because Trophy Wife airs at the same time as Mindy I only watched it on the app. I love the show but not enough to give up Mindy and now with the app fiasco I'm pretty much giving up on TW. I agree they didn't do much to promote the show. I only decided to give it a shot because I love Malin from Children's Hospital.

    ReplyDelete
  82. The +7 numbers almost always show POI's demo going from 2.0 to at least 3.0, not to mention going up a few million viewers as well.
It's always the #1 show in its time slot (even though I did prefer it on Thursday)
POI isn't going anywhere, don't worry.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ho, I thought Killer Women was a limited series due to its 8 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I only remembered about it when @DarkUFO posted a press release for it. Link if your interested to read it: http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/01/the-black-box-episode-101-kiss-sky.html.

I forgot that they meant to air The Quest in the spring, it would surely have done better than The Assets and Killer Women.

    ReplyDelete
  85. But unlike Betrayal which is a soapy drama with an ending, Killer Woman is just a procedural. Plus Betrayal didn't do as badly with it;s first two episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I mean i love POI but it isnt the #1 show at 10 PM on Tuesdays. SOA always scored a higher rating then POI. And Chicago Fire was above POI or even equaled the rating of POI on several occasions.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I always like to look at the overall trend of the ratings. For example, while CF started stronger than PoI -- I think a 2.7 or 2.8, it has continuously drifted downward to the point where it now is usually (and that's only in the last three weeks of new episodes, mind you, and there are at least ten new episodes for both shows left, I think) even or below PoI. PoI started at a 2.3 -- no barnburner, unfortunately, but rather consistently stays between a 1.9 (I think it got once, maybe a 1.8) and/or a 2.0 or a 2.1. So, on the whole, PoI is stronger and consistent, whereas CF -- like last year's competition of Grey's Anatomy, comes out of the gate strong and blazing but consistently dips until it ends up even or usually below. Just my two cents. ;-)

  88. Thanks. It's very odd. But then again, it's the dumb network that we are talking about here!

  89. Where is SOA?
I respectfully disagree. POI always has the highest number of viewers in that time slot, and even with the 18-49 demo (a demo I still find ridiculous, btw) I can't remember the last time CF came out ahead. Not to mention what Lo

  90. Yeah but POI was always considered a bigger hit then CF. And while the first ratings might have been inflated by the Voice. It has shown it can score 1.8-2.0 even without its help and actually rises out of its current lead in.
We haven't seen POI perform in such a fashion yet.

And POI has the Spring factor where it always goes down by a lot (seen last years in April and May). Last year it went from 2.8-3.0 demo to 2.4 just in Spring.

  91. SOA is on FX. The last time CF beat POI was December 3rd with a 2.3 demo against POIs 2.0. POI actually only beat CF twice: today (POI 2.0 vs CF 1.8), October 22nd (POI 2.2 vs CF 2.1).They were tied for several nights. Of course with POI with a bigger audience. I guess you could say POI has a slight advantage there. Last week the demo for POI and CF was 2.0. And that was quite big for CF without the Voice lead in and growing out of The Biggest Loser. We haven't seen POI without a lead in or even growing out of its lead in at least on Tuesday.
