  1. Awesome episode as always. I like that even though it was a case of the week episode, we got little ties to the overaching story with the "relevant" numbers and why Hersch and those guys were interested.

Reese had some truly awesome moments. To being a gentleman, to being what every flight needs (someone who punches the jackass on the phone out), witty one-liners, and just generally kicking ass. It was a fun, claustrophobic little episode.

  2. Very enjoyable ep to see the disillusionment plot of Reese come to a resolution... fun ep that required a bit of disbelief suspension as the relevant/irrelevant number was a bit too calm with the knowledge that he was a target by several factions - but as believable as him freaking out would've been, it probably wouldn't have served the ep well. Good to see that Reese (with his salt and pepper hair that is catnip to soccer moms - loved that line) was able to vent some of his frustration/disillusion as he was chastising both the number (can't think of his name right now) and Harold at the same time, but got reinforcement from the flight attendant who wondered about people who believed in helping others..... Nice scene with Shaw paying a visit to her old facilitator and Hersch... nice to see a normally nonthreatening person be soo terrifying.... and the closing scene with Finch and Reese was awesome.... can't wait to see the new suit!

  3. When in Rome?!

Nice fun little breather, but yet still reflecting a lot of stuff that the characters have been going through! Love that we got this second episode to reference "North By Northwest" - Reese's salt-n pepper slicker hair and Holly's dishwater blonde made for cool Carey Grant and Eva Marie Saint spoofs, with Owen being our Kaplan by creating his "Spinx" decoy.

Nice little shout out to LOST of course too! (some of those objects in the cargo hold Reese used against the ISA agent were awfully familiar!!) Also noticed that kid was named Titus, another Grecian God reference, which also was the name of a reoccurring villain featured at the beginning of Revolution this season!

Hersh lives! (Not too surprised, but you think we would have gotten "patchy" eye, "Two Face", or armless Montand or something!) -Shaw's scenes with him were great though!

It seems that for the time being that Reese's reservations about working for the machine has been resolved, Can't wait to see where we go from here! Does anyone know how long of a break we have this time?

  4. Amazing episode so clever send a 'relevant' number for Reese. I like the scenes on the plane, was little bit clichê in some parts, but fun with a good action packed very entertainment. I like the Shaw development and the meeting with Hersh (I knew he's not dead).

This episode is all about Reese and I glad they did this for the character, the final scene between Reese and Finch was good and emocional.

About the POI of the week Owen Matthews is another geek fun character, better than him is Holly, I love her and I hope both characters will be back in some point this season.

The best thing of this episode is the fact of the Machine manipulate the all thing, she did everything and make Reese returns to the team.

  5. Talk about your overbearing bosses!
The Machine just won;t let any underling take a vacation without working a little! XD

Don't any of these writers fly?
A man without luggage buying a one-way ticket would be red flagged and checked out by security... Especially on a special flight with multiple Air Marshals transporting someone!
I know the show is not set in ultra-reality, but that is such an easy fix.... C'Mon!

    Okay rant over XD
I admittedly am a little hypersensitive to airport routine...

Aside from that small laughable scene I really liked the episode a lot!
It was nice to have a Reese and Finch centered episode. It felt like an episode from Season 1.

I really enjoyed Reese being measured for a suit XD

Overall, the episode was amusing but not exactly in my top 10 list of POI episodes. However the ending tying into Reese's realization of what he really does was a great bridge of what's to come after the fallout of Carter's death.

Indeed isn't in the top ten in this season, but at the same time it was a very welcomed change from the previous arc and excellently executed. To get over with the cons at the beginning: yeah, the "one way ticket, no luggage" is a red alert at every airport, it was lazily done. Finch landing the plane with a Thrustmaster (or similar) was also a "little" strong, but if he was such a fan with Flight Simulator that he had a gear even in the batcave at hand, I give him the suspend of disbelief. :)

The rest was everything why this show is loved. Good banter and funny oneliners, some action scenes, Caviezel for eycandy (that salt and pepper joke was good), some deeper emotion and strong connection to the real world in the background. The bitcoin payed drug net-market is a reality, financing the black ops from illegal money was also real (Iranian-Contra scandal, if anybody remembers). I liked that they made a plot in which Reese can't do anything but help, and as I wrote in the favourite scene topic, the very end with them walking away was IMHO a straight out hommage to Casablanca. Just like Rick Blaine, Reese found his not-disillusioned self again and "a beautiful friendship".

One more note: I'm not a huge fan of Jim Caviezel as an actor - don't throw me stones, I have no problem with him, just see him a little one sided. Yet the scene at the end, when Finch tells him that he misses Carter too, it was great. He went from a little sad and curious to desperate in a second without a word just with his expression - excellent work.

  8. And the guy playing Owen has a history of playing a geek. He was in Freaks and Geeks after all :)

  9. I knew this ep was gonna be awesome last week when I realized the machine sent John on a mission without telling him. The first few minutes (when the plane was boarding) were awesome and really funny. Shaw remains awesome. The scene of her on the phone with Harold while the guy is freaking out in the trunk was a hoot. Beautifully performed scene...the last scene with Harold and John. Harold's expression when he realized John was coming back to work.

  10. I thought about the lack of luggage thing too. Um, maybe The Machine, flagged him in the computer so that the staff wouldn't be worried? (nah. I don't buy it either.) I thought they were US Marshals not Air Marshals.

  11. Awesome, best episode contender, dealt with Carter's death in a meaningful way, Reese was able to stretch his leading man muscle and developed HR believably and in a way that didn't disrupt the pace.

  12. You know, I COULD think of three episodes this season that were less good than this one. :p

The scene in Rome also felt like a reference to The Dark Knight Rises to me. Also when Finch said that ''with free will comes great responsibility'', I couldn't help but think of Spiderman!

Oh, but I'm optimistic and hope that the coming ones will be even better :D

Anyhow, I wish all the shows have "not the top one" episodes like this was.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, you might be right.

I know on prisoner transport flights they often have both. The US Marshals with the prisoner and then extra security with the hidden Air Marshal or two.

It is so odd,I have yet to see a realistic airport check in or flight on a TV series XD
Most are just lazy writing and ignoring the realities of air port security, but some are just outright farsical! XD

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hehe, that's for sure. The plane simulation bit was the stupidest thing I've seen on this show, but besides that I really enjoyed it!

  16. Hey guys! Last week I came across this Interview i09 conducted with POI showrunners. It kind of clarifies some things about the machine, such that it can simultaneously have different relationships with different people...

    Anyways here's a link for anyone interested:http://io9.com/person-of-interests-producers-tell-us-what-the-machine-1498754032

  17. Oh, but what about the LOST fun and the implausibility of North By Northwest plots?! XD I think even if unrealistic, it was nice to have a little bit more of comical episode after all heavy stuff we just endured!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I also was reminded of Alias with Rome too, as Sydney as Julia Thorn had an apartment there. (My mom wonders if Carter is dead, or if she's in witness protection, because of this Rome thing and because Finch helped Owen in similar witness protection-like fashion, but I think she's gone.)

I agree, my criticism - if it is at all - was about that to me there are two big category of actors. One is a real doppelganger, can morph itself into very different characters with different manners, quirks. The other category is less versatile, there is a range of roles and characters which fits to them. The most iconic of this type was maybe Humphrey Bogart. It doesn't mean they aren't good actors in what they play - they're just first themselves in each role. When the role fits, they can really shine.

  20. Indeed, good catch.

  21. Thanks for sharing! Hey, it looks like I can guess correctly once in while, after all! I mentioned Colossus as a possible direction in which they could take the show several episodes ago, before we had even learned of the possible existence of another AI. If they adhere strongly to the Colossus playbook, then that means that our Machine will, at some point, form an alliance with Samaritan...or possibly even merge with Samaritan to from a collective íntelligence. That may be part of what they meant by "several inteligences living inside one machine.
Unfortunately however, Colossus sought to subjugate humanity, so it will be interesting to see if they go down that road in this Show and how our human friends deal with it, if they do.

    ReplyDelete
  22. No prob! I have never seen Colossus, so I'm def grateful for your insight! Nice job at early predicting!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. "I would always rather have a human element remain in determining something so critical as someone's fate."
My favorite line from the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, unlike Skynet, Colossus wasn't dedicated to the eradication of humanity. It just regarded humans as too dim-witted to handle their own affairs and therefore took over this reponsibility for them...for the greater good, so to speak. The problem was, though...Colussus wasn't overly tolerant of people who didn't follow its orders to the letter...

  25. One of the best ever!

  26. I've been writing software for thirty years...Hollywood has beaten the quest for realism out of me. :-) I call it Hollywood Physics, Hollywood Law and most of the time I can la la la my way past without thinking too hard.

  27. Ah, cool! It's definitely going on my need to watch in the near future list! Sounds pretty cool!

  28. Really great/important line!

This season is so goddamn good. Even the "filler" episodes are outstanding. Much better than the previous seasons. Flawless season so far.

    ReplyDelete
  30. didn't agree. this season is getting better and better, and the last five or six episodes are amazing, but the first half of this season is like chaos: overcrowded, lose lots of dynamics, unfocused. I'm glad POI is finally back on track

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hardly. The season has been flawless since Razgovor. Plus, since Razgovor we've had all of two standalone episodes. It's been fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Razgovor, the Shaw-centric episode? For me that's the worst. The biggest mistake that the poi writers made in beginning of S3 is they that sold Shaw too hard. Focus on Reese, Finch and the POIs is the right way to go

One more note to the episode: John originally wanted to go to Istambul - one way, without any luggage. Now in 2x07 Alistair Wesley told him in his farewell that they had already once crossed their paths - in Istambul, at the market. In any other show I would say it doesn't mean anything, but here...

  34. László Harsányi16 January 2014 at 16:40

Sorry, but this is a very shortsighted approach. The "the last five or six episodes are amazing" right because the writers very consciously built up other characters, made them involved into the story. That made it possible to change the balance from episode to episode, focusing on them.
Focusing only to the leads and do the same old same old week after week is exactly why all the procedurals became boring and repetitive in a short time. That's the lukewarm, thirteen a dozen quality.

    ReplyDelete
  35. so so so good :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. you totally misunderstood me. what I am saying is NOT focus ONLY on Reese or Harold, but focus on these two, while developing other leads. But what I saw in the earlier episodes of S3 is that they gave shaw too much time, and leave other leads undeveloped

    ReplyDelete
  37. will29802309829017 January 2014 at 13:31

Reese and Finch had their developement already during the first 2 seasons. Shaw got her deserved screentime. Seems you just don't like her.

    ReplyDelete
  38. László Harsányi17 January 2014 at 13:38

Precisely. And there is the inherent contradiction in saying that they must not focus on other characters, but they should develop them at the same time. Developing characters means focusing on them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. again, I'm not saying they must not focus on others, i'm just complaining they focus too much on her in the first ten episodes. But now they're doing better since every character is developing, not just one or two.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Aweesome. Loved the John focused hour and loved the ending with the two of them. The Shaw connection also fit in quite nicely and I liked the POI, I hope we can see him again at some point. I got sad in the last scene though with Finch saying he missed her dearly.. So do I! Jim Caviezel was awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree, this is my favorite season by far. The only episode I didn't like much was the premiere, oddly.
